  • @Robert McClenon: Hmm... what I think likely happened is that the student meant to take a copy of the article into their sandbox/userspace for them to work on, but somehow the lines got crossed and they created it in the draftspace instead, thinking that this is how their edits would get approved. User:Shalor (Wiki Ed) - I moved the copy from the sandbox into draft space after they had submitted it to Articles for Creation. The basic mistake was not preparing the draft in sandbox/user space, but in submitting it to the AFC process, which is an entirely different sort of review than is in order for college assignments.   • No problem. It's not something that I normally see, so this is a bit of an unusual case. All I can figure is that they tried to get a peer review from a classmate and somehow accidentally submitted it to AfC. Reagle, definitely let me know when you find out where the mixup happened. Yes, some students who were extending exiting articles (rather than creating new ones) developed their modifications in their sandbox, which was fine. But they hit the submit to AfC button inappropriately and prematurely. I've clarified that for extensions, it's fine to work in a sandbox, but review should happen via the existing articles talk page. Sorry for the hassle. -Reagle (talk) 19:28, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Peer reviews by students

Hi again Shalor. I'm back to pester you again, so I hope you don't mind. I believe RAM2018 is one of the students your currenlty helping, so I'm wondering if you'd mind taking a look at User:RAM2018/sandbox and the corresponding comments on at User talk:RAM2018/sandbox. It appears that RAM2018 is working on a general rewrite of Yayori Matsui, which is fine. There might be some minor WP:PATT and WP:CWW issues if this sandbox version is directly copied and pasted back into the namespace, but those can be fixed fairly easily. My question has to do with whether the "peer reivew" on talk page is referring to some kind of official WP:PR or is something of a fellow "classmates=peer" type of review. The former should be fine since the editors doing the such "peer reviews" tend to be Wikipedia peers with sufficient experience to offer constructive criticism; the latter, however, might become an issue if it's basically other student peers who might not have sufficient editing experience to be familiar with various policies and guidelines. At the moment, it appears to be more of the latter than the former, so I'm not sure how WikiED goes about handling such things. Of course, student editors should be bold like everyone else, and the sandbox does seem like a good attempt at doing this, but I'm a bit curious as to whether RAM2018, the course instructor, and the other students in the class (many seem to be working on similar sandbox drafts) understand WP:OWN, etc., and that a major rewrite is sometimes best discussed first on the respective article's talk page before being incorporated into the article per WP:CAUTIOUS. If a comprehensive "peer review" is really what is being sought, then posting links to these sandboxes on the respective article talk pages as well as relevant WikiProject groups might also be helpful.

It might also help if something general was posted on the article talk pages and WikiProject talk pages which lets others know when a WikiED student group has selected a particular article (or articles) to be worked on as part of a class project. Right now, these groups seem sort of insular in that they only focus on interacting within their group, and thus they might not be aware of how trying to better incorporate themselves into the community might help them become better editors, which would benefit be to Wikipedia's benifit as well. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:07, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Marchjuly, I don't mind at all! I definitely like seeing/getting feedback! As far as peer review goes, it's typically the fellow students doing the reviewing. It can get problematic at times but I try to catch things as quickly as possible. The students do go through some training, which helps them out a lot with the peer review process. In general I tend to recommend that students bring up their work on the article's talk page, especially in cases where the topic is controversial. As far as notices go, students are supposed to tag article talk pages with a banner that announces that it was/is part of a class assignment: Template:Dashboard.wikiedu.org assignment. I'll bring this up with my co-workers to see if there's a way to ensure that students tag these pages more reliably. It's supposed to show up whenever a student signs up for an article on the Dashboard, but it looks like it's not always coming up. I'll also see if there's a way to get students to participate more with other Wikipedians. I know that I've told them about WikiProjects, especially when they're working on articles where sourcing may be particularly hard to find or in another language.     • Thanks for taking a look. I guess things should be fine as long as there are editors other than students invovlved in the review process. Renucci House does not have an official wiki page

Looking up information, how do I not plagiarize all the information from their website to the Wiki page?

Also, I contacted the house and had an individual who works at Renucci house answer some questions that were not available on the spectrum house webpage.   • Hi Kenny1ae, the best way to do this is to re-write the content in your own words as best as possible. A good way to do this would be to take notes from the source material and then use those to write your article. This can be pretty challenging at times, especially when there's not a lot of material to work with. After I post this message I'll go and post an example on your sandbox. One of the most important things to be careful with when you're summarizing information taken from other places is that you don't make the work sound promotional. I'll give a more in-depth explanation on your sandbox.
As far as the content from the Renucci house goes, you unfortunately can't use anything that you get via e-mail or word of mouth, as there's no way to really verify this information in a way that would satisfy Wikipedia. I do have to say that I'm a little concerned about whether or not the Renucci house will pass notability guidelines on Wikipedia, as you will need to have enough independent, secondary reliable sources that discuss the house in-depth in order to show where it's notable enough to pass Wikipedia's guidelines. Offhand I don't believe that there's enough out there, unless there is more coverage that isn't on the Internet. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:18, 22 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Cutiepinky, unfortunately I noticed that you took your translation from Baike Baidu, which makes it a copyright violation under these circumstances since I don't believe that Baike Baidu licenses their work under a compatible Creative Commons license. This is something that's a little unusual since most wikis release their content under a Creative Commons license that would allow people to reuse their content as long as you attribute the source - ie, as long as you put in the edit history and/or article talk page where you got the material from. For example, anyone can use Wikipedia's work as long as they mark that it came from Wikipedia and we can translate content freely with attribution. The only thing that can be done in this situation is to re-write the entire article from scratch. Regretfully, I do have to let your professor know about this and I will have to remove the article itself. I can e-mail you a copy of the article content so you can re-write it, though.
On a related note, I also saw that you used Baike Baidu as a source. This site can't be used as a source because the site is the Chinese government's version of Wikipedia, meaning that it's a site that anyone can edit. This means that like Wikipedia, the site has little to no editorial oversight apart from making sure that the material doesn't violate site guidelines such as harassing material, copyright, and so on - things that most sites check for. What you need to find are things like academic and scholarly sources about Bu Xi Ya Ma La and other, similar types of reliable sources, as these will be able to show notability for this person as well as verify information about her.   • I've deleted the content from Wikipedia and your userspace using my main account, but feel free to continue to use your sandbox to re-write the content in your own words and as a workspace. If you're concerned that you won't have enough time to do this, you may want to look into translating an article from the Chinese Wikipedia. It looks like Nurhaci could be expanded with information from the Chinese Wikipedia article. Just make sure that when you translate something from another language's Wikipedia you make a note of the source when adding your translation to the live article.   • Hi Bvilleggiante, do you have VisualEditor enabled? If not, then this does make citing sourcing a lot easier. You can enable it by following these directions. As far as citing goes, it looks like you added a raw link, but didn't create an in-line citation. We have a small guide to this here and there should be additional directions in your modules.   • Hi Sepulvedalu, it looks like the page was moved because of titling guidelines on Wikipedia. On here only the first word in an article title is capitalized unless it's something formal, like a person's name or a book or film title. The title "Rehabilitation and reintegration of child soldiers" would be the correct one on here. As far as the orphan tag goes, I wouldn't worry about it that much. You may be able to link to it in the "general" section at Children_in_the_military#See_also, though.
Offhand I am a little concerned about the article's lead paragraphs. It needs some tweaking/rewriting to more closely fit Wikipedia's guidelines on introduction paragraphs. My recommendation would be to look over the opening paragraphs in articles like the one that covers children in the military and style it after that. You may also want to consider working this into the main article on children in the military. Basically, I'm concerned that this reads too much like an essay at points.
I'm also concerned about the sourcing, as there's not a huge amount of it and some of the sources are research studies. The issue with studies on Wikipedia is that they're seen as primary sourcing for the claims and data created during the course of the study. The publishing journal does look over the material to make sure that it looks feasible, but they aren't actually reproducing the study or writing anything on the content. In order to show that the study's data/claims are notable enough to highlight in the article we need to find independent, secondary sources such as literature reviews that cover the study, an academic source that covers the study, and such. Another issue with using studies is that there may be multiple studies that cover the same or similar topic, so the article will need to have the secondary coverage to justify why one study was highlighted over another.
Now that aside, this was a good topic choice - it just needs a bit more work here and there. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:22, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi DakotaStrode, unfortunately this is a fairly common issue with living people, that there's a lack of images that would fall into a compatible license. With this there's not really anything that can be done, as the only ways to get an image would be to take one ourselves (can be hard to do if the person isn't nearby) or to contact the person or their representative to ask that they upload an image to the Commons.   • Hi Mdeolivares, as far as I can tell it looks OK. A good rule of thumb to avoid close paraphrasing and plagiarism is to take notes while going through your sourcing and then to work from your notes for the article. It may take a little longer but it makes it less likely that there will be an issue with plagiarism. Offhand this looks good, though. When Hong Taiji talked about that he wanted Harjol to marry him, the Khorchin's Princess immediately lets Harjol marry Hong Taiji, and gave birth to a boy for Hong Taiji. Even though he didn't say anything, Khorchin were nervous about their relationship. 
  Also, Harjol already was twenty-six years old; in that time; women got married when they are thirteen or older than thirteen. But no older than seventeen.There were no documents to show the reason why Harjol didn't get married when she was young and became leftover women. Other claims said because she got married to Ligdan Khan. Harjol got back to Khorchin because Ligkan Khan's uncle gave Harjor back to them while he wanted to defected with Hong Taiji. But this claims didn't have any document to prove this.
Hong Taiji recited the poem for Harjol " Guan guan" cry the ospreys, on the islet in the river; the beautiful and good young lady, if a find mate for the lord." He though Harjol was the women that poem described, so he sighed the name for Eastern Palace as Guanju Palace( the palace that Harjol lived in).

The reason why Hong Taiji love Harjol

1)Harjol was beautiful; the name "Harjol" means Jade which represents that her beauty is like jade. Also, she is the most beautiful women in Hong Taiji's harem.

2)The first child that Harjol gave birth was a boy, which means she got power from her son. Since the Empress Xiao Duan wen and Xiao Zhuang that their child was girls. Also, because Hong Taiji already loves Harjol, and she gave a son to him; the more he loved her.

3) It was because their son died in few months after he born, and Harjol's health was weak. Because of her son died, she got ill and never recover.

Consort Chen Princess's titles have never happened.
"In October (Winter), Ji Shi considered Consort Chen for canonization as First Consort Minhuigonghe" It means Harjol was His first wife, but it was not because before Harjol, he married with a lot of women. Hong Taiji dubbed Harjol as "First Consort Minhuigonghe" showed that how much he loved her. My Page not showing

Hello Shalor, You sent me a message some weeks ago.

I published my draft of my article in my sandbox as we were instructed. But when I open it among the articles for review, it says the article is not in Wikipedia.

  • Hi Esamikhafe, are you talking about User:Esamikhafe/sandbox? I've added an easy access link on your userpage for them to click on to access the draft. Offhand I do have some concerns about your draft. My first concern is that you have citations, but they aren't added to the article as an in-line citation. You can add them by following the directions here. Also, be very careful about sourcing - you need to make sure that they go into depth and aren't too brief. Make sure that the content is written neutrally - this was something I struggled with when I first started editing, since I was used to writing in a more casual style. Also be cautious about spelling - I fixed a few of these for you. This looks like a good start. I'm surprised that Uduak Isong Oguamanam doesn't have an article already, so good job on identifying a person who really needs one! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 02:11, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Cutiepinky, no problem. On a side note, do you have any book or journal sources to accompany the ones you have here? In any case, I think that this is ready to move live, whenever you're ready. To do this you need to open both your sandbox and the Harjol article in edit mode.   • Hi WikiTrice, what topic area are you supposed to edit? I do see where you tagged food desert as a potential topic. If you want something similar that's interesting, you may want to look at editing the toxicity risks section in the guerrilla gardening article.
