Sections

[edit]

Hi there. When creating sections you should use two equals signs. Although you can do "=See also=" the Manual of Style recommends not using them. Instead do "==See also==". Secondly, a "See also" section should only contain links to Wikipedia pages, use an "External links" section for any non-Wikipedia links. Happy editing. Qutezuce 10:34, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice photos. One small point: Sir John A. Macdonald spelled his name with a small "d." Masalai 04:13, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this. My error has been corrected. By the way, I've enjoyed your article on Regina. You live here too? I could find no info on your User name! Scotwood72 19:33, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Thanks for the compliment. Not everyone likes the photos but you can't please all the people all the time, eh. No, I don't live in Regina now, but spent the first half of my life there, went to the University of Regina and later taught there. "Masalai" is probably not something you would find anything on Wikipedia about; it's New Guinea Pidgin. (Spent several years there too.) Masalai 13:26, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page Blanking

[edit]

On 22-Feb, you blanked Newfoundland & Labrador House of Assembly. Blanking pages is generally considered a bad idea. I was not sure if this was the result of a broken edit or if you desired the page deleted. If this was the result of a broken edit, you may wish to make the correct edits. If it remains empty, it will probably be deleted, but if that was your intent, please mark it with a {{db-empty}} tag to hasten it. You may also choose to redirect it to another article. If you have questions, please let me know. Thanks! -- JLaTondre 02:08, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for edit summary

[edit]

Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 0% for major edits and 0% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 0 minor edits in the article namespace.)

This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 04:24, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category

[edit]

Hi again. It seems a lot of the pages you are creating could be put into a category or two. Most of them seem to fall into Category:Official residences. You can put a page into this category by putting "[[Category:Official residences]]" at the bottom of the page (no quotes). Qutezuce 06:51, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Monarchy

[edit]

What is the value of adding a direct link to the monarch's website? There's nothing specific there to Jamaica, Barbados, etc. The page already links to the Wikipedia article on the monarch - there's no point to this link. Guettarda 19:48, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if it sounded rude - it wasn't meant that way. I just meant that these links don't add anything that isn't supplied by existing internal links. External links (other than references) are something that should be added sparingly - that section tends to get out of control very quickly. Adding external links which duplicate internal links isn't a good idea. Guettarda 02:04, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please read Wikipedia:External_links and Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not. Basically, you should link to sources which complement the information in the article. You should supply external links to sites which expand upon the content of the article - for example, if they supply visual or multi-media resources which can't be added for copyright reasons, then a link is appropriate. If you feel that there is sufficient grounds to add a section about the role of the monarchy to the Jamaica article, then make the case at Talk:Jamaica and add the section. Once it is added, you could justify adding the external link for "more information". But if you cannot make the case to add a section about the topic to the article, then the link doesn't belong there. The simple fact is that the monarch warrants no more than passing mention in the main articles. The Queen has no role in the government of Antigua or Jamaica or Tuvalu. She appoints the Governor General that the Prime Minister tells her to appoint.
I find it amusing that you claim to know about the importance of the monarchy in Antigua or Tuvalu, but seem to think that the fact that I lived my first 9 years as a subject of the Queen, and even went to see her when she visited Canada for her Jubilee in 1976 gives me no understanding of the importance of the monarch. Guettarda 19:53, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your numerous edits to the 'pedia. They are appreciated. Regarding the User Cdn Armed Forces template, I'd like to tell you a bit about the history of the User templates. The first User templates were the so-called Babel boxes, templates that created groups of users who knew various languages, both so they could communicate between themselves, and so others could identify them and contact them about the languages they knew. This was directly in service to contributing to articles - verifying interwiki links, translating articles, and other tasks like that. People liked the form of the boxes, and gradually expanded their use, first to musical instruments, then to the vast panoply of boxes we have today. Over time, the original focus of the boxes on identifying groups of users who had skills and abilities they wanted to use to contribute to the 'pedia was lost, and it came to be believed that the boxes merely expressed personal statements, not necessarily related to the 'pedia at all. However, the technical ability of the standardized, templatized boxes to identify and group users remained present, and potent. Unlike direct text, individually written by each user to express whatever personal statements they wish to express, User templates provide an automatic list of their users (via the Whatlinkshere feature). They have been used to contact only the members of the implied group, both as assumed allies, and as a hit list of intended victims to be harassed. As long as the boxes remained focused on the 'pedia, this, while sometimes unfortunate, still on the whole benefited the 'pedia, and only opened up the users to risks they intended to run. But the use of the User templates for purposes unrelated to contributing to the encyclopedia means that the group-forming possibilities of the boxes are and can be used for purposes utterly separate, and even opposed to the goal of contributing to the encyclopedia we are all trying to write here. That's why I proposed the changed wording that I did; a group of Users who want to work on our coverage of the Canadian Armed Forces is a good and useful thing, and something that the group-forming abilities of User templates can assist with. A group of users who merely appreciate the Canadian Armed Forces, but who may or may not make use of that appreciation in connection with the 'pedia is harmed by the group-forming abilities of User templates. I look forward to your response, either here, on my talk page, or on the talk page of the template itself. If I do not get a response within a week of posting this message, I will assume you accept the proposed wording change, and I will reapply it. Feel free to revert it again if I do, but I urge you to respond to this message as well. Thanks again for your work on the 'pedia! JesseW, the juggling janitor 18:56, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

It is officially the "Canadian Forces", not "Canadian Armed Forces". Would you mind making the slight change?

Fair use image use

[edit]

Please stop adding images tagged with fair use tags to any portion of Wikipedia outside of the main article namespace, such as you did here. This is a direct violation of Wikipedia policy as set out at Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #9. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to ask. Thanks, --Durin 00:49, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, there is something I don't understand and I would like your polite help in explaining it to me. (I say polite because some admin have been far from this.) Why are some images I put in a userbox not allowed, when very much the same has been included in others? For example, a picture of Queen Elizabeth II was deleted, but other boxes have Martin Luther King. Why is a logo produced by the Canadian government accepted in one (armed forces logo or flag) and not in another (maple leaf and poppy)? The policy page doesn't explain this problem that people keep telling me about. I really don't understand and no one will give me a straight answer. Please help me! Royal Saskatchewan Museum photo

[edit]

I note that the photo you have provided for the article is identical to the one on the Museum's own website. What is its copyright status, and is it available for this purpose? If not I am afraid it will have to be deleted unless the Museum will grant permission for its use. If so, I wonder if other photos on their website are also available. Can you get back to me on this? Thanks. Masalai 00:27, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Rsm.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rsm.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 20:16, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I noticed you tagged the image as being PD because it was a work of the U.S. government. Why would the Sask. government use an image from the US government for a building in Saskatchewan? Or even why the US government would have any interest in taking such a photo. RedWolf 22:34, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sylvia Fedoruk image

[edit]

Hello,

I found your image Image:Sylvia Fedoruk.jpg which is a great shot of her and the Order of Canada badge, but im afraid you've taged it incorrectly. Only works of the United States government are in public domain. Works of the Canadian Federal Government (or in this case more likely the Provincial Government of Saskatchewan) are protected by what is known as Crown Copyright or copyright which is help by the state. This (at least in works by the federal government) can be used under fair use and there is a tag (something like Canada-Politician-Photo) to cover them. I tried searching collectionscanada.ca for this image but no luck. Do you have the exact link it came from ? Many of the items on collectionscanada.ca have copyright held by the National Archives which is allowed for use for any purpose which makes them essentially public domain, and it would be great if we could find out for sure on this one. Fair use rationale for Image:UgandaHouse.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:UgandaHouse.JPG. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Image:Myra Freeman.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Myra Freeman.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hotel Sk

[edit]

Hi. I notice that the text you added to the article on the Sask. Hotel is copied from the City of Regina Archives website verbatim without attribution. I have formatted the quoted text as a quotation and added a footnote; fortunately I caught it before the plagiarism brigade got to the article! Do watch out for that in future; possibly it would be better to paraphrase the discussion so it's not just an extended quotation -- still with the attribution of course -- but I don't have time right now. Thanks.Masalai 10:13, 17 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi. When you uploaded Image:AlbertStreetBridge.jpg, you did not specify complete source and copyright information. Another user subsequently tagged it with {{GFDL-presumed}} and, for some time, it has existed on Wikipedia under the assumption that you created the image and you agreed to license it under the GFDL. This assumption, however well-meaning, is not legally sufficient and the tag is being phased out. Images using it are being deleted.

This image has been tagged for deletion and will be deleted in one week if adequate copyright information is not provided.

If you, personally, are the author of this content, meaning that you took the photograph yourself or you created the chart yourself (and it does not use any clipart that you did not create), please retag the image with a free image copyright tag that correctly describes your licensing intentions, usually {{GFDL-self}} or {{PD-self}}. Please also make sure if you have not already done so that you write a good description of what the image depicts, when you took the photo, and other important details. This will allow Wikipedia to continue using the image.

If you did not create the image or if it is derived from the copyrighted works of others, please keep in mind that most images on the internet are copyrighted and are not suitable for use on Wikipedia. Wikipedia respects the copyrights of others and does not use images unless we know that they have been freely licensed. Any creative work is automatically copyrighted, even if it lacks a copyright notice. Unless the copyright holder has specifically disclaimed their rights to the image and released it under the GFDL or another compatible license, we cannot use it. If you did not create the image, and cannot make the image compliant with Wikipedia:Non-free content, simply do nothing and it will be deleted in a week. All other non-free images must follow these rules.

Please feel free to contact me on my talk page or leave a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions with any questions you may have. Thank you. Aksibot 07:55, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Regina.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Regina.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Poppy.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Poppy.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 12:42, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:BC_House.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. MECUtalk 18:07, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Manitoba_Government_House.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 22:54, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Manitoba Government House.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Proposed deletion of Foods with Nationality Names

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Foods with Nationality Names, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable list. See WP:OLIST.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Radiant chains (talk) 11:25, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just received a new message suggesting the page I just created, Foods with Nationality Names, be deleted. I am very frustrated with Wikipedia for the over control in this regard. The page had been up for only about 5 minutes and already it was scheduled for being deleted. This is unfair and absolutely rude. This is a continuous situation with all Wikipedia editors or whatever you call yourselves. Each time I ask who makes these decisions, I receive no answer, but just another message about overkill on the control. When I started posting pages and information on this site, it was a welcome to anyone who wanted to add their little bit to web. So much has changed. Members are not welcome to post here anymore. We get rudely shut out to the point where I feel like taking off everything that I have posted on Wikipedia. This has become so unfair, it is no longer a FREE ENCYCLOPEDIA.
Hello, Scotwood72. You have new messages at Scotwood72's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
I am seriously considering deleting everything that I have posted on Wikipedia. You are not the only one who has treated me in this manner. The control has gone from moderate to excessive. It's not like I was posting racist or pornographic images.

A tag has been placed on Bolgatty Palace, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia for multiple reasons. Please visit the article for details.

You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Codf1977 (talk) 11:53, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Davin.jpg needs authorship information.

[edit]
Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Davin.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided),authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which:{{subst:usernameexpand|Scotwood72}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
    or use the {{own}} template.
  • If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:12, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for File:Carey Castle.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 03:06, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Sylvia Fedoruk.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Sylvia Fedoruk.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 22:46, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
