Hi there, Please can someone help me with the links on this page i worked on. I created this page many years ago and of course do not want it to be deleted. I would like to improve the page with your help.
In the discussion, someone commented that it is full of 'linkspam'. `I wasnt sure what this meant, but I did not intend to do anything malicious and would appreciate guidance on links. Should the links only be linking to wiki pages? I changed a link recently because when i checked the links, as i do periodically, the content of the website had changed. What do we do about that? If i create a link to a noteable article on the internet but that content changes after a few years? Thanks. Scoobiunderground (talk) 14:40, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hi. I'm an administrator on Wikipedia. I took a look at the article – I assume we're talking about Georgie Smith – and noticed that it has a lot of inline external links. The problem is there is that we generally don't link to external sites in the body of a Wikipedia article. The relevant guideline says:
"With rare exceptions, external links should not be used in the body of an article."
There are a few reasons for this. First, it's generally considered a bit promotional to directly link to external websites. Wikipedia is one of the world's most popular websites, so anything it links to is prominently featured in many search engines queries, though we do take steps to mitigate this. The second issue is that Wikipedia is generally supposed to link to its own articles, where people can learn more about the topic without having to go to external websites, which may not be neutral or well-sourced. So, for example, we would link to our article on New York City (via [[New York City]]) rather than an external link to the official website for New York City. Then, at the bottom of our encyclopedia article, we would link to the official NYC website. As far as websites whose content changes, one way to deal with this is to take a snapshot of the website using the Wayback Machine. This will create an archive of the submitted page hosted on their servers. It will still be accessible if the original website goes dead or the original page is deleted. This is a free service unrelated to Wikipedia. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 16:57, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
– Thanks so much @ NinjaRobotPirate Super helpful. Will fix the links asap. Not sure how i will track articles that have since been removed from websites i had linked to as references when i originally posted this article a few years ago , but will try out and use 'Wayback' for future ref .
