Welcome!

Hello, Rszabo, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, your edit to TOEFL does not conform to Wikipedia's Neutral Point of View policy (NPOV). Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations that have been stated in print or on reputable websites or other forms of media.

There's a page about the NPOV policy that has tips on how to effectively write about disparate points of view without compromising the NPOV status of the article as a whole. Don't understand how this does not fit guidelines

[edit]

Hi,

I do not understand how my contributions do not fit with the guidelines. I work for ETS and was told to make changes especially concerning the use of TOEFL without a noun afterwards such as test or scores as that is a violation of our trademarking. Every edit I made can be supported with information from our website www.ets.org/toefl. We do have 27 million test takers and 8,500 institutions. These are not opinions.

If there are specific items you feel are opinions, can you please tell me rather than delete all my contributions. Some of the items stated on the page are incorrect. Also, we were following what other companies like IELTS have done. I would appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Well, the first thing is, if you work for ETS, you probably should be editing the TOEFL page, per WP:COI. However, with reference to the specific edits, my reversal was partially because your edits made it look like an advertisement for TOEFL, and partially because it contained information which is not relevant to an encyclopedic coverage of the subject. As a general rule, we should be basing the bulk of our articles on reliable secondary sources--that is, not things published by ETS itself, but things written in other sources unaffiliated with ETS. For example the "27 million test takers" is much more of a promotional statement than a factual one. I'm not saying it's false, I'm simply saying it's unencyclopedic. Furthermore, I'm not entirely certain that we can take ETS's word on the subject...on the latter point, though, I may be wrong, and I'd have to check for further opinions. Another giveaway that your edits weren't acceptable was the use of trademark symbols and talk of "family of products". Wikipedia never includes trademark materials, and the latter is not neutral encyclopedic language. Qwyrxian (talk) 13:09, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the explanation. There are a few errors that should be corrected. TOEFL PBT test is being phased out and is not readily available and TOEFL Junior now has two tests instead of just one. Would it acceptable to add these corrections? Also, there is no section on TOEFL ITP test. Is it allowable to add it? If these are okay, I will make these lmited changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rszabo (talkcontribs)

Sure, do you have a source on that? In this case, even a source from ETS will be fine for that information. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:27, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
