Shahzad Akhtar Wakeel [1] [2], was a social activist, arts enthusiast and founder of a Charitable Organization for underprivileged children. He was an IIT Bombay alumni[3] and founder of Rang[4] and Pankhudi Foundation [5] – An India based social development organization and registered charity in India.

Early Life[edit]

Shahzad Akhtar Wakeel, was born in 1983 in Patna, India. He was 10 years old when his father Shaikh Akhtar Wakeel died of a heart attack. His early life was full of hardships. When he was in middle school, he realized that he was the eldest brother of his family and took up the responsibility of being the guardian of the family

He worked his way through high school successfully. After high school, he applied to study in MIT [6], Astronomy, but the exorbitant fees stopped him from pursuing his dreams of studying at MIT. However he took IIT JEE(Joint Entrance Examination) [7]and ended up with an All India Rank of 866. IITs are considered the MIT of India, and typically have a lower acceptance rate than MIT.

Student Life[edit]

He spent the most productive and formative years of his life in IIT Bombay (IIT-B) [8]. One thing that truly satisfied his inner conscience was the honor to be called an IITian.

In IIT, he was an institute Fine Arts Secretary from the year 2003-2004. During this tenure, he started the RANG - The Fine Art Community of IIT-B, to instill a zeal about fine arts in the student community. This community has really grown over the years and is a preeminent arts community with over 1400 members and has done a tremendous job bringing out the artistic side of its members.

Founding Pankhudi & Social Work[edit]

Just after passing out from IIT Bombay, he really wanted to give back to the society. With this in mind he started Pankhudi as a community in ORKUT[9]. The main objective of this community was to work on adoption of children who have lost their parents. Because of tough adoption laws, later the focus shifted to providing education support to underprivileged children in different parts of India.

Pankhudi was registered as Pankhudi Foundation [10] [11] in 2005 under the society's act. At present, the foundation runs six chapters in Allahabad, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune and Bangalore along with its headquarters in Mumbai.[12]

In Patna, he organized BRAIN OF PATNA for the first time where a group of IITians came together to mentor and provide scholarship to the future aspirants.

In 2012, he worked very hard to organize the Patna Marathon [13]along with a small team that was created prior to the global BIHAR summit. Because of political glitches, the marathon couldn't take place. But the first flash mob of Patna was ideated by Shahzad and along with a small team of dancers, it was done in Maurya Complex and PNM Mall, Patna.

Later, he started AGRAJ initiative, but while he was in the midst of this critical initiative he tragically passed away due to complications from Asthma.

Considered by his friends and followers as a true friend, guide, mentor and a truly amazing human being. Shahzad is thought to have created a legacy of love, kindness and inspiration.
