Regarding your question about keyboards, there is no standard for "multi-media keyboards", so vendors can do what they want. Since none of the extra keys on "multi-media keyboards" are in any way essential to operate a PC, if you do not like these keyboards (which I can understand very well, as they are typically of very low quality), you can simply ignore them and buy a quality keyboard following a standardized layout. If you want a professional grade generic MF2-style keyboard I can recommend the Cherry G80-3000LPCxx-0 series (with xx=EU, US, UK, ... depending on your locale) with individual MX switches with linear characteristics (other characteristics are available as well, but most fast touch typists prefer linear) and support full n-key rollover. They are available even without "Windows" keys (if you prefer), with PS/2 and USB plugs, and can be obtained for less than 50 USD and will last a lifetime of permanent heavy use.
