FACs kill the assessment in the page headers?

Hello, I am using Firefox 2.0.0.20 and the gadget version of the script. I have noticed that when an article has been nominated to FAC, the entire assessment as the page header disappears (whether it be the class, or former nominations, or such). Examples: Battle of Barnet, Yukon Quest, USS West Bridge (ID-2888), etc. Is it just my browser? Jappalang (talk) 09:13, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

 Works for me too. I can't think of anything that would cause it to break in Firefox 2, so it might be a caching issue or something of the sort. Try bypassing your browser cache, and if you see any errors in the Firefox error console when you do so, post them here. I upgraded to 3.0.10 and still face the problem. I am using Monochrome (default) skin, and there is nothing in my monobook.js except for Dr_pda's prosesize and Pile0nades's intro editor. I have tried disabling the gadget version and importing your script into my monobook.js, but it showed the same issue. Purging does not work for either version. The script works on other pages (those not nominated for FAs), just not the pages which are nominated at FACs. The error console yields the following error when I view Battle of Barnet:

Compatibility with Vector skin

Can the script be made compatible with the new Vector skin? I tried installing it, purging the cache, emptying it, and all the usual tricks, yet I can't get the functionality back. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 22:17, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

The primary reason it is broken is because there is no unique identifier for "the talk page" anymore (used to be ca-talk). This is now ca-main_talk. This was even causing an error for many people, so I changed the script to avoid the error, so other scripts can execute.
The secondary reason is because siteSub is not visible in the Vector skin. So special CSS needs to be added by the script in case the vector skin is used.

Overlays with multiple assessments

The script chokes when multiple assessments are attached to an article. (Platform: Firefox 3.0.13, Gadget version.) It seems to be affected by the co-ords tag. "Glengoyne Distillery‎" example: "B-class article; undergoing a good article reassessment; former good article nominee; geocord". Maybe longer strings could reflow onto subsequent lines. –Whitehorse1 19:39, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

It looks fine to me. What's the problem? Are you saying that the coordinates are overlapping with the assessment? You must be on a pretty small resolution then. Gary King (talk) 19:50, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I see. It corrupts by overlaying at my regular screen res (1024x768). I tried it at 1152x864 (same problem), but it displays correctly at 1280x960. Heh, you edited to add the cause just after my testing. Good to have it pinned down. –Whitehorse1 19:57, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Most likely #coordinates would have to be modified. You can do it for yourself by going to Special:MyPage/monobook.css and adding #coordinates { top: 0; } Gary King (talk) 20:05, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Disambig pages STILL not recognized

When you fixed this before, I think it made every disambig page not be recognized unless they were marked as such by a WikiProject. They seem to mostly show up as "Unassessed". That's not SO bad, I guess....

I've found a different bug though, at Listing. Once upon a time, this page was an article, and had been listed under "WikiProject Business & Economics" (now non-existent) as a stub. On September 17, 2007, that article was moved to Listing (computer) and the page was converted to a disambig page. Some time later, someone removed the WikiProject code from the talk page. Sounds like a caching issue; Listing is marked as a disambiguation page and Listing (computer) is marked as unassessed. Try bypassing your cache and see if that fixes it. Disambiguation pages are recognized based on the presence of the disambigbox element on the page, so the script won't even request the talk page for properly marked disambig pages. How about recognizing articles that are part of featured/good topics?

How about making the script recognize articles that are part of featured/good topics (as well as those that were nominated but failed)? Wikipedia:Featured topics/Half-Life 2 titles is an example of a featured topic. Every topic has one main article and several subarticles. On the talk page of topic articles, the most crucial code is ftname=, which indicates the name of the topic. Some articles are part of more than one topic, but that is only about five articles or so, so it is not necessary to include code that recognizes more than one topic if it's too much work. Failed FTCs are recognized in the ArticleHistory as action=FTC and actionresult=failed. Gary King (talk) 16:06, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

SL-Class

Title color suppression

I am using the gadget version of the script (but I checked and the problem exists also with the monobook.js version), on Firefox v3.5.5. Incorrect B class reporting

When you have a C class article that has not meet the B class criteria this is included in the assessment, it is common to use 'class=b' and the assessment code automatically displays B only when all of the sub criteria are meet. Otherwise C is displayed. The gadget seems to only look at the class= parameter so it does not display the correct class. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:05, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Remove extra space after "good article reassessment"

There's an extra space after "good article reassessment" because of the "'<\/span>'" in "'good article reassessment', '<\/span>'". The space is being added in "end = end ? ' ' + end.toString() + '.' : '.';", which adds a space before "<\/span>" because it expects this to be text, even though it's actually HTML so it doesn't appear. Some proposed changes

Please assist I made a request at the village pump that I'd like to share here (after it was moved from script requests!). Display an assessment color in category entries

In the same way you assign colors to page headers, would it be possible to modify the metadata script to display each article entry in a category in an assessment color that reflects the underlying article's quality assessment? For example, the article entries at Category:Public relations people now appear the same color. By selecting "Display an assessment color representing an article's quality as part of each article entry in a category," the entries at Category:Public relations people would appear in different colors, where those colors represent already made article assessments. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:57, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

It'd be best for someone to create a separate script, but one that takes advantage of functions provided by Metadata, so that not everyone has 200 queries executed every time they view a category (since the maximum number of articles per category page is 200, and one query is required for each article). Wrong class displayed at Sarmatians

Looking at the article Sarmatians, it shows as a B-class. However, in the talk page, the highest grade is C-class.

"Sticky" assessments

I've noticed that the assessments have gotten "sticky" in recent times.

This means that when I visit a page, then change its rating in the talk page, then go back to the page proper (by clicking the "Article" link, not by clicking "Back"), the old rating is displayed. Shift-Reload doesn't help. When I visit the same page on a different machine, the new rating is correctly displayed, so some kind of caching must be a problem here. The odd part is that until a month or so ago this was working as expected.

I've tried the following:
  • My Win2K computer:
  • Firefox 3.6.16 - as described above.
  • IE 6 - the gadget does not seem to work at all, assessments are not displayed.
  • My Windows 7 computer:
  • Firefox 4 - as described above.
  • Chrome 10 - displays the old assessment, reload doesn't help, but Shift-Reload does.
  • IE 9 - as described above.
I'm getting the same results on repeated attempts. Frankly, I'm stumped here. I don't normally use browsers other than Firefox, so I can't say whether their results are out of the ordinary. GregorB (talk) 20:10, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Okay I now see that I'm having the exact same problem as you. The Metadata script is not updating. For now, I feel that the problem lies with MediaWiki and not the script. I'll see what I can find. Ultimately, it just seems that the server is reporting the old version. This is probably related to the fact that the server will still show the old version even after just recently performing an edit. This can be resolved by bypassing the cache. I'm not sure why, but a version that I created works. It's here: User:Gary King/metadata.js. I didn't actually change anything major, so I don't know why that works. No the gadget version won't be updated. User:Pyrospirit, the current maintainer for the script, hasn't edited in 10 months. Perhaps I could take over maintaining the script, though. We'd need an admin here to handle that. I do plan on updating the script whenever I have the chance; for instance, the last change I made to the script also fixes the extra space after "Currently undergoing a good article reassessment ." so that it looks like "Currently undergoing a good article reassessment." Gadget not working?

Hi. When I try to view article assessments, the page does not display the correct colour and instead shows only the black header title and an error in the page. Thanks for the report. Apparently, Internet Explorer still doesn't support indexOf for arrays so it has to be added manually. I had removed the method from the original script when I mistakenly thought that all major browsers were able to use it; plus, I also thought that where the script used indexOf was on strings, not arrays, anyway. Okay, so I've re-added the missing code, and have tested it myself in Internet Explorer 8 and it works there. So, an admin will need to copy the code into the script and gadget versions, thanks. Commented out GA info (and possibly other assessments) are still shown

Madonna (book) is a good article nominee, but an editor has copy/pasted the GA code from another and commented it out. As a result, it shows the article as both a good article and a good article nominee. ScottSteiner ✍ 09:20, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Why is the article history commented out and not removed? I don't think this script needs to be rewritten to recognize commented code; it currently just reads one line at a time, so it would need some work to rewrite it that way. Gary King (talk · scripts) 18:40, 16 April 2011 (UTC)
I attempted to remove it, but the original creator of the page undid my removal with the message "I kept that on purpose". I changed it over to have the status be "GAN" like the action1 is, but that didn't seem to fix it. ScottSteiner ✍ 13:29, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

"Currently being peer reviewed" even after review is closed

Look at United States v. Wong Kim Ark. I listed this article for peer review a few weeks ago, and it was reviewed, and the review discussion has been closed. But when I view this article, the assessment line still says "Currently being peer reviewed". Is this a bug in your assessment code? Or was the peer review not closed properly? FA status not updating

Hi, the Franco-Mongol alliance article was recently promoted to FA status on the second try. I've updated the templates and purged both article and talkpage, but it's still showing as the old status. I've checked it on two different browsers. So I'm not sure if I did something wrong, or just need to wait for the cache to catch up, or if there's a bug because of the multiple FA noms. Feature request

Hi, I noticed a little kink in the gadget. When an article is undergoing a GAR, the assessment link leads to Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/ArticleName/#. The reassessment is only given at this link if it is a community reassessment. If it is individual, the reassessment is held at Talk:ArticleName/GA#. That said, if an article is undergoing an individual R/A, the feature leads to a red link. Is there anything that can be integrated into the script that would be able to differentiate between community and individual reassessments? TRLIJC19 (talk • contribs) 03:46, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

MilHist List-classes

Hi, just a request for a minor update. WikiProject Military history introduced a new assessment path for List-class articles a while back, to better us grade lists between being a Stub and a Featured List. They now follow a separate path from prose-based articles, like so: List −> CL −> BL −> AL −> FL (more details at WP:MHA). Wondered if this script can be updated to colourise and identify the graded-list-class for articles that have been assessed this way.. and there will be plenty, not just a handful. At present articles still display the An unassessed article tagline if only the WPMILHIST banner is present with a list grade given, as the new classes are not recognised. Assess links script not working

Bug report

Hi @Pyrospirit: - just a quick bug report. Thanks for this gadget, it always helps me spot articles in need of assessment. However, one thing I've noticed is occasionally, about 10% of the time, article assessment template are simply like {{WikiProject Insects|stub|low}} rather than {{WikiProject Insects|class=stub|importance=low}}. In these cases where 'class=' isn't there, the assessment won't show at the top of the article, despite the template and talk page categories functioning perfectly. (talk page stalker) @Acather96: {{WikiProject Insects}} is unusual amongst WikiProject banners in recognising positional parameters - in fact, it's the only such case that I've ever come across. It's probably best not to go against convention. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:00, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

I had some issues with Twinkle not loading in the last few days. (OS X, Chrome) Debugged in the console and the only failure was "sajax_init_object is not defined" attached to User:Pyrospirit/metadata.js. Commented it out and we're up again. Forward users to gadget

This script no longer works, due to the removal of Sajax. May I request that, similarly to what was done with Twinkle some years ago, the entire content of User:Pyrospirit/metadata.js be replaced with something akin to the following: 

// Pyrospirit's metadata script has moved! For the code, see [[MediaWiki:Gadget-metadata.js]]
mw.loader.load(['ext.gadget.metadata']);
