Why can't I edit Wikipedia?
Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but it is considered inappropriate for such groups to use Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.
- Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?
Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organization for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.
- What can I do now?
You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:
- Add the text
{{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}on your user talk page. - Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
- Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
- Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
- Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
I can address the first bit first - your username gives the appearance that this is a group account. That is to say, edits posted from this account have the appearance of coming as official communications from Port Moody Sport Tourism. This is not permitted, because A) accounts must be assigned to individuals, not groups, for licensing purposes, B) misconduct on the part of this account (vandalism, etc) would reflect improperly on the entity, and C) the account was editing pages related closely to its name, implying that a Conflict of interest exists. Any one of those flaws is enough to block. As for the promotional nature of the edits - if unblocked, you may wish to provide information on the talk page of a particular article, and that information may be of benefit to the editors working on that article, but you're not able to edit articles for subjects with which you are closely associated. OK...can easily change name: "salishwaves" to resolve issue. As new user, didn't understand the message board. I think the problem here was I didn't see that Admin"emarsee" was sending initial msg's to guide edits, & help warn me (and wow - fast!). I thought I hadn't saved pg properly, then re-sent the same edits again, I ended up blocked. Wanted format similar to City of Coquitlam wiki, and how they have links about their various rec centres (such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimo_Aquatic_and_Fitness_Centre). ....am happy to comply - and eventually like to see a page for Port Moody Recreation Complex like the Coquitlam example. People are using Wiki to locate information about Port Moody recreation, and I thought recent edits could get them to info faster. Saw precedent with neighbouring cities which seem to have staff perspective contributions. After reading FAQ re: Organizational input, hope my contributions can still accepted as long as shaped to meet Wiki stds - sorry to have crossed parameters. Here's a few key questions:
- Do you understand that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a business directory?
- Do you understand conflict of interest?
- Do you understand that to be considered for an encylopedia article, the subject must be considered to be notable?

your reason here PLEASE NOTE: New User Here - learning fast why/how this wiki edit works. Must say, its not very intuitive. I created account name to match our Google account for simplicity - don't know why it needs blocking, but willing to change name if that is issue. No intention for "advertising", just trying to correct outdated info on our city wiki page to ensure public get links to accurate information. Didn't realize this was in conflict since we are helping people find information about recreation directly. As to external links I included to our city webpages, hoping you can restore. Currently people are trying to locate simple information about Port Moody recreation, and I hoped my recent edits could get them to info faster. We have precedent already on same page with Culture links, Library and Museum...and we are the Community Services department from same branch..am happy to comply. Please unblock so we can update.
