New Yorker article

Thank you for the suggestion to use the New Yorker article on the Tyrone Hayes page. I went through it and also several of the papers that were mentioned and have added some material to that biography after reverting a few more anonymous edits of the type up with which we do not usually put. I thank you for your help with finding such a good source, if there's anything more you need, please contact me on talk page or via email! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 21:34, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for the welcome, but I'm afraid it wasn't necessary. :p This is actually my secondary Wikipedia account. My main account has been around for about five years now. Unfortunately that account has personal info associated with it that would make using it unwise for emotional current events editing. (Read: being attacked on social media by angry people I've never met). CTYankeeAbroad (talk) 12:54, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

No problem. Yes, I sometimes wonder if my Welcoming committee efforts overdo it. Most of the time I do believe that I am truly greeting new editors, but occasionally I think that I may be adding a talk page for an experienced user who either does not choose to have one, or who does not bother to create one. However, I believe it is better to err on the side of being overly welcoming. Peaceray (talk) 20:42, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
That goes without saying. Always err on the side of being more friendly! CTYankeeAbroad (talk) 22:25, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi Peace, thank you for your efforts. We were editing this article at the same time, so my apologies for the override on your edits. When I saw it, I went back and tried to add what you contributed. Apparently I've already offended someone because they tried to delete (not modify or shorten, but just plain delete) the section I created to described the inaugural issue. I've added a section on the Talk page as well. Hopefully we won't see the bickering about an academic journal that we see about the human sexuality and porn articles. --Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... OER inquiry

Hi Peaceray/archive, I'm sending you this message because you're one of about 300 users who have recently edited an article in the umbrella category of open educational resources (OER) (or open education). In evaluating several projects we've been working on (e.g. the WIKISOO course and WikiProject Open), my colleague Pete Forsyth and I have wondered who chooses to edit OER-related articles and why. Regardless of whether you've taken the WIKISOO course yourself - and/or never even heard the term OER before - we'd be extremely grateful for your participation in this brief, anonymous survey before 27 April. No personal data is being collected. If you have any ideas or questions, please get in touch. My talk page awaits. Thanks for your support! - Sara FB (talk) 20:46, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Great American Wiknic 2014 - Oahu

I'd like to invite you to add an Oahu event for the Great American Wiknic. This year we're aiming to coalesce nationally around July 6, but any date that is convenient to your local community works as well. And don't be shy about putting something preliminary on the national Wiknic page, it all helps!--Pharos (talk) 16:57, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Pharos, I am sorry that I was unable to respond to you sooner. A loss of a job & a scramble for another of comparable worth led me to Seattle, where I attended Seattle's 2014 Wiknic, having landed there the night before. I have thus been very busy for the last couple of months, except for the occasional edit. Peaceray (talk) 02:06, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

Hawaii edit-a-thon!

Hello. I'm interested in attempting to put together an edit-a-thon for Hawaiian cultural topics something during the Makahiki festival perhaps around the month of November. The hope is that our lackluster coverage of Hawaiian mythology could be improved with help from the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Pacific University, and the Honolulu public library. I am in the process of making initial contacts with these organizations as well as Wikimedia DC's GLAM project. If this sounds like something you might be interested in participating in, or perhaps helping to coordinate, could you please add your name to 2014 Makahiki Edit-a-thon?--v/r - TP 21:24, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

TP, I am sorry that I was unable to respond to you sooner. A loss of a job & a scramble for another of comparable worth led me to Seattle. I thus will find it hard to coordinate with you locally. I may be able to participate remotely, perhaps even a Skype session.
I do not know if you would be interested in taking over the Honolulu Wikipedia Meetup that I started in preparation for a 2014 Wiknic for Oahu that, alas, I never got to organize due to my relocation. Recently, meetup.com sent me an email:
Your Organizer Dues plan is set to renew on Friday, August 8, 2014 for another 6 months for $72.00.
You can manage your plan, update your payment information or change your renewal option from the Organizer Dues tab under your Account page.
Meetup also makes it easy to track dues and expenses with your Group Tools. Through your Group's Ledger, you can manage Meetup event fees, Membership Dues and Sponsorships.
Learn more about how to manage money with your Meetup Group here.
If you have any questions, contact the Community Team directly at [email protected].
Best regards,
The Team at Meetup HQ
Please let me know soon if you are interested; otherwise I will cancel it.

Muslim conquests

Hey, Peaceray, I do not know if you are a particular expert on the subject, but I was wondering whether you could possibly offer your input on the recent changes - and the subsequent reverts of those changes - on the Muslim conquests article. If possible, I would also much appreciate it if you might also offer some advice concerning an escalating dispute involving myself and another editor. Thank you very much for your time. William Davison

Hello

I am Dudley, the (volunteer) webmaster of Bailiffgate Museum in Alnwick. I am concerned to update and make more accurate the section on William Davison of Alnwick on Wikipedia as he is a star of our town. You may know of us as the Castle next door is also a major attraction, as well as being a location of the Harry Potter films. I am not familiar with the Wikipedia process yet but to highlight some of the issues:

1.0 William Davison very definitely DID finish his Bible. We have one on display in Bailiffgate Museum ( see our website About Us Collections). It was recently rated one of the 100 most significant objects of the whole NE. I want to put in text about that obviously.

2.0 I also want to add a picture of the Bible, which seems a really tricky process to do compared to our website, which is easy, so all help gratefully received.

3.0 Add a link to Bailiffgate Museum which is a growing focus of national -and international- interest in him which we clearly want to foster.

4.0 Add more references eg to "William Davison of Alnwick" by Peter Isaac, which is a leading work, and some of his references.

5.0 Add some more of Davison's amazing repertoire of activities mentioned by Isaac.

6.0 Maybe later add a link to the "Davison Cam" that we aim to set up, looking 24 by 7 at the mannequin of Davison in his replica printshop in the museum. The idea is that visitors, and especially overseas ones can then be seen in there in real time by their relatives in Shanghai, New York or whatever. Do you know are there any special restrictions on a link like that on Wikipedia or is it just a normal one? (NB We have privacy policies in place like any such public body and ONLY those who wish to be seen on camera and walk into the special area will be visible)

Thanks in advance. Dudley Bailiffgatewebmaster (talk) 08:25, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

I am not sure that you meant to get it touch with a Yank, but I will be glad to help some. I will probably respond more tomorrow evening PDT. I did add William Davison (publisher) to the disambiguation page, William Davison. Peaceray (talk) 22:43, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Not worried who helps me ( used to work for Nabisco at one time as manager of Shredded Wheat in UK, so very positive views of US). What mystified me was how someone had written an otherwise detailed article on William Davison but did not know about his Bible. Bit like missing Bleak House from Dickens.Bailiffgatewebmaster (talk) 09:00, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Issues Now:

Have now added an image of the Davison Bible at [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Davison_Bible_1.jpg Would ideally like to have it in a box on RHS of page with text under within the box "A Davison Bible on view at Bailiffgate Museum, Alnwick England". For some reason the image has turned through 90 degrees though on upload. Trust that is solveable?

Yes; there is a function right on the page to request a rotation. I requested that it be rotated 270° clockwise (90° counterclockwise). This should be done by Rotatebot, an automated bot. However, there may be some glitches in this particular bot's operation. Peaceray (talk) 02:58, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Hopefully the text edits will be OK for me to do myself. Have already added a Bailiffgate Link and a Further Reading category. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bailiffgatewebmaster (talkcontribs) 16:43, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Responses Re: William Davison

My responses are below, in italics.
  1. William Davison very definitely DID finish his Bible. We have one on display in Bailiffgate Museum ( see our website About Us Collections). It was recently rated one of the 100 most significant objects of the whole NE. I want to put in text about that obviously.

    OK

  2. I also want to add a picture of the Bible, which seems a really tricky process to do compared to our website, which is easy, so all help gratefully received.

OK, you added the picture, & I requested the rotation. You can find instructions for inserting it into the article at Wikipedia:Picture tutorial.

  3. Add a link to Bailiffgate Museum which is a growing focus of national -and international- interest in him which we clearly want to foster.

I added Bailiffgate Museum under the See also section.

  4. Add more references eg to "William Davison of Alnwick" by Peter Isaac, which is a leading work, and some of his references.

I recommend using the citation information located at William Davison of Alnwick: pharmacist and printer 1781-1858 (eBook, 1968) [WorldCat.org] to fill out the cite book template.

For this particular book, I would use the template with these parameters:

    {{cite book |last1= |first1= |year= |title= |location= |publisher= |oclc= }}

The completed code, which you can copy & paste, should look like this:

    {{cite book |last1=Isaac |first1=Peter C G |year=1968 |title=William Davison of Alnwick: pharmacist and printer 1781-1858 |location=Oxford, UK |publisher=[[Clarendon Press]] |oclc=574694205}}

    This will result in displaying:

Isaac, Peter C G (1968). William Davison of Alnwick: pharmacist and printer 1781-1858. Oxford, UK: Clarendon Press. OCLC 574694205.

For additional printed references about & by William Davison, I recommend looking at this link:

Results for 'William Davison of Alnwick' [WorldCat.org]

  5. Add some more of Davison's amazing repertoire of activities mentioned by Isaac.

    OK

  6. Maybe later add a link to the "Davison Cam" that we aim to set up, looking 24 by 7 at the mannequin of Davison in his replica printshop in the museum.

I know of no restrictions in particular. Add it in the External links section.

  • If you have access to them, please also upload any of the caricatures that Davison may have engraved up to Wikimedia Commons.

Dear [[User::Peaceray| Peaceray]] , Thank you for taking time to report the media updates. Sadly, Kannada Wiki or KN:Wiki has got a negative PR. Please see the following discussion here on Facebook. An inactive editor can't read the pulse of the community and understand whats happening around. The good thing is it brings in more support for Kannada community as we now have eyes on us from other Indic Language wikimedians. This discussion has been taken back to Village pump to avoid disconnected dialogues. You will also find the latest information about the best things happening around Kannada community. [www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-karnataka/bid-to-showcase-monuments-online/article6495125.ece Here] is an another important update on Kannada community engagement in Bidar with the help of district administration, Rotary club and educational institutes. Please let me know if any other information can be shared to ensure that the Wiki community gets the right news. I would be writing few blog posts to share Kannada wikipedia current activities/status. Thank you once again! Omshivaprakash (talk) 16:38, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Vintana, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page National Geographic. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I accidentally created in Article space instead of User_talk space via faulty redlinks in a template. I have tagged all four mistakenly-created pages in the article space with author-requested speedy deletion tags. Luckily, the average user would not have seen them because they were subpages.
Thanks for alerting me by tagging the first one & leaving a message here.
