A new FL contest[edit]

Wikipedia's epic FL directors Matthewedwards and Scorpion0422 have decided to try another FL contest as a follow up to the one held last June. As you entered the first contest, you may be interested in taking a look at the new one, which will have different rules. Although they are still being fiddled with, three FLs in different topics will be required this time around. For more information, see here. Thanks for the time, Scorpion0422 15:52, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

...I entered the first one? I see I did... and even worked slightly on the list, before forgetting that I ever entered the competition. Sigh, this is why I have a to do list. Nousernamesleft (talk) 23:49, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, I see that I could still come in third place if I tried. I'm too busy, unfortunately. Nousernamesleft (talk) 23:51, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copyedit request[edit]

Hey, could you look over Nevado del Ruiz? I've been working strenuously on it and I was wondering if you could give me some feedback about the prose (and possibly help me copyedit). — Ceranthor [Formerly LordSunday] 21:57, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, too busy, and little to no interest in the subject. Nousernamesleft (talk) 01:01, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to start fact checking FHB, if you would like to help. Hopefully this will help avoid the problems that 1964 Gabon coup d'etat experienced at FAC. Awadewit (talk) 14:27, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be glad to help. Nousernamesleft (talk) 19:14, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for it anyway. My brain is too darn lazy to look over the sources myself. :) ~one of many editorofthewikis (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 00:51, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I completely borked the ref so I can no longer understand your comments. Please make the required chages yourself. Thanks for your time. ~one of many editorofthewikis (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 02:10, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hm? It seems no different to me. Ah well, I'll go ahead and attempt to fix them myself, though I probably don't understand the context as well as you do. I'll start tomorrow; I'm rather tired right now. Nousernamesleft (talk) 02:12, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FA-Team new mission[edit]

Hi Nousernamesleft, You've probably noticed that the FA-Team has just launched a mission to help WikiProject AP Biology 2008 and WikiProject North of the Rio Grande improve articles towards featured quality. I'm hoping you would like to join in and support a few articles from one or both of the projects. If so, please add your name to the articles you are watchlisting on the mission page. Thanks, Geometry guy 20:00, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oil shale extraction[edit]

Hi, Nousernamesleft. As you are a member of the FA-Team, I would like to ask you assistance. The Oil shale extraction was a FAC, but was not promoted, mostly because of the prose. I wonder if you could be interested to help bringing this article to the FA level. Thank you in advance. Beagel (talk) 20:43, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: The eldest Luan[edit]

Well... I would think that placing the site in the url field of Template:cite book would be acceptable. The pages would still have to be omitted though ... Jappalang (talk) 01:05, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Books.sina.com is likely reliable as it is owned by the Sina Corporation (media). The text at yahoo.com.cn might be more problematic. Although the author has stated the source, he or she is not a yahoo staff, but part of the yahoo community (i.e. the collection of text stored there is also community contributed). Ugh, it also seems that Yahoo can edit the community's contributions but does not state what sort of oversight,[1] and relies on visitors to report any copyright infringement.[2] I think the yahoo site would likely fail... Whereas Sina.com is likely able to afford the fees (and has that big corporation image) to reprint the chapter in the book word for word, the yahoo.com piece is either a copyright infringement or one in which we would not be sure if the author has reproduced it word for word. Sorry, I should have checked further on the second piece before recommending it to you. Jappalang (talk) 22:58, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot believe it but... I found Xuhui's blog... and it contains the extracted text you wanted (note: it is the earliest amongst all the copies on the web, hence pointing it as the original source as well). [3] Jappalang (talk) 01:30, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did a copyedit of the article and also fixed a couple of mix-ups: Marquess of Lecheng was male, the quoted text should be attributed to Xuhui and footnoted in original language, etc. Please go over them and check that I did not cause great damages to the article. Jappalang (talk) 03:54, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up. The article currently starts as "Luan Da (? – after 113 BC and before 87 BC); Chinese: 栾大; Pinyin: Luán Dà) ...". See the mismatched brackets? It cannot be corrected by simply inserting another "(". The MOS forbids nested brackets or consecutive bracketed clauses (WP:MOS#Brackets and parentheses), so take care in resolving this. Jappalang (talk) 01:01, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Format-wise, it looks fine, but I am uncertain if the context is correct. The brackets now show lifespan and Chinese symbology, kind of a mixed concept... However, none of the other similar Chinese biographies offer a suggestion (they either violate MOS or follow the same format), so I think it can be left as is until it is registered as a legitimate issue. Jappalang (talk) 01:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have found a better translation (Nienhauser and Cheng) of Sima Qian's work than Watson. Remember that I said the project would prefer reliable sources than our translations, so thank goodness we have these two professors! Unfortunately, the Google book has cut off my preview of the earlier and later pages. However, I learned that a copy is at my local library. I will pick it up when I pop down there, and fully replace the Watson cites with theirs. As for cutting down cites to Zhang and Xuhui, I will try to help, but I am not certain that Western scholars are that greatly interested in the details (as you can readily see, most summarize the events). Jappalang (talk) 12:26, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

For your vote at Roman Catholic Church. I am sorry to inform you that we failed FAC but will again be at peer review in a few weeks to sort things out. Hopefully we will make it through next time. We will be contacting all supporters and opposers of the article when we open the next peer review to hopefully get all issues addressed and hashed out before the next FAC try. Thanks again for your time and attention to this important article. NancyHeise talk 01:01, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Luan Da[edit]

I'll try to find time to peer review Luan Da sometime soon, but not right now. I've got lots of real work to do on top of embarking now on this enormous project to rewrite Han Dynasty. I've got all my notes together and I am excited and delighted to say that I am ready to start creating the draft, User:PericlesofAthens/Draft for Han Dynasty. That's where I want to spend all of my energies for now. I hope you understand! I've waiting and working patiently for about a year for this moment.--Pericles of AthensTalk 21:42, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RfA thanks[edit]

The RfA Barnstar
Nousernamesleft, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. Once again, thank you for your participation, and have a great day! :) The Helpful One 22:26, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfC news[edit]

Dear AfC participant,

  1. Msgj and Tnxman307 are organising the AfC challenge! It's a little competition to help improve some of the articles created through AfC and we are hoping that everyone will get involved. For level 1, you just need to bring a stub up to Start-class. Level 2 is improving a Start-class article to C-class. And so on. To get involved or for more information please see the competition page.
  2. Those of you who haven't reviewed an article recently might not have noticed the new process that was implemented this year. Reviewing articles is now more enjoyable than ever :) You might like to give it a try. All articles waiting for review are in Category:Pending Afc requests. (Please read the updated instructions.)
  3. Please consider adding {{AFC status}} to your userpage to keep track of the number of articles waiting for review. At the time of writing we are officially backlogged, so help is needed!
  4. There is currently a proposal to bring the Images for upload process under the umbrella of WikiProject Articles for creation. The rationale is that both processes are designed to allow unregistered users to take part more fully in Wikipedia, and partipants in each process can probably help each other.

If you no longer wish to receive messages from WikiProject Articles for creation, please remove your name from this list. Thank you.

Image copyright problem with File:Amc logo.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Amc logo.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --FairuseBot (talk) 12:00, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
