Image copyright problem with Image:Logo_of_the_Northern_Ireland_Assembly_notext.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Logo_of_the_Northern_Ireland_Assembly_notext.gif. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you. -- Carnildo 13:30, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image tagging for Image:BBCNews9799.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:BBCNews9799.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Progressive Building Society.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Progressive Building Society.png. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Ulster-Scots place names[edit]

I noticed your recent edit to the Irish place infobox, it got me googleing, and I found a couple of websites. [1] and [2], what do you think? « Keith » 14:42, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Somaliland Map[edit]

Hi, it looks like you are a very talnted map maker, I would like you to make a Somaliland map with regions numbered, and then pointed in accordance to where the major cities in Somaliland are. I have seen you Ireland map and I'd like you to make a Somaliland based on that if you dont mind...Thanks

Abdullah Geelah 21:44, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for you message and your kind words. To be honest, I have only edited maps that other people have created. I also know very little about Somaliland, so unfortunately I won't be able to do a map for you.
Sorry I can't be of more help! NotMuchToSay 22:33, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries[edit]

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. ЯEDVERS 22:02, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do know that. You can see where I've done this for many of my posts. Maybe I don't do it for all of them, and maybe I should, but there's no need to be patronising about it. Thank you. NotMuchToSay 22:08, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Community-approved standard message; not my wording. See {{summary}}. But, of the +- dozen edits you've made that have appeared on my watchlist in the last 48 hours, exactly 0% have had edit summaries. This is a figure you could improve slightly, as you seem to agree above. And, yes, maybe you should do it for all edits. It wouldn't harm. There's an option in your preferences to make the software ask for a summary if you can't manage it under your own steam. Thanks! ЯEDVERS 22:51, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ulster-Scots placenames in info boxes[edit]

Hi,

I've noticed you've been adding Ulster-Scots place names to several articles, and I was just wondering what the rationale behind it was? The Irish places names are there because that is what the places used to be called before their names were Anglicised, but I'm not sure what significance the Ulster-Scots names have. Surely, if they are to be included, the Chinese and Polish names should be included too, given that more people speak those languages in NI? :) Martin 23:09, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comment. It's not something I'm particularly interested in, but it does appear that in some cases, there is an alternative Ulster Scots name. I think this should be reflected, since Ulster Scots does have an agency looking after it and is a dialect native to the north of Ireland. This is not the case for Chinese and Polish. More people speak Chinese and Polish on a regular day-to-day basis than Irish, so you could argue the same about it.
If you travel down the Ards Peninsula, you'll see a number of signs with placenames in Ulster Scots. Some have names similar to the English and/or Irish, some are completely different.
You'll notice that, in a couple of cases I added an Irish version of the name as well, where one didn't exist on Wikipedia previously.
Basically I think that in a few cases Ulster Scots names should be added if there is evidence that they are, or have been used. Making up new ones is not a good idea, though.
EDIT: I originally made the "Ulster Scots" version <small> in the infobox so that it was less prominent than the Irish. This has been changed as it was apparently unreadable in some browsers. If someone wants to find a solution to this, feel free.
NotMuchToSay 16:52, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. That seems pretty reasonable to me. It's nice to see someone actively contributing to the NI articles - they can remain pretty static sometimes, so any ideas you have for improvements are more than welcome. If you haven't done so already, you might like to drop by the Northern Irish Wikipedians' notice board. Cheers, Martin 20:33, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your edit to County Laois[edit]

Actually County Westmeath does border a county with a coastline. County Meath has a small coastline - only a couple of miles long - but it includes Laytown and Bettystown. (I spent my summer holidays as a kid there ;O)) Flowerpotman 22:30, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies - you are, of course, absolutely right! Will amend page accordingly... NotMuchToSay 17:46, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if it's any consolation, I spent ages last night looking for a decent map trying to see what other counties might fall into that category. Just one of these things that once you think about it, you just have to check. :O) Flowerpotman 19:28, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Waterloo Partnership, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Hatch68 18:33, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message. I have removed the {{dated prod}} notice as suggested above and have added some more information. If there is a consensus for deletion then fair enough, but I think this article has a place on Wikipedia.

Non-free use disputed for Image:Fokus bank logo.gif[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Fokus bank logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 09:31, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Progressive Building Society.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:32, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Ireland Dialling Codes[edit]

Can you stop removing the end of the dialling codes from the infoboxes on Northern Irish places please. You keep removing them to 028 which is solely the dialling code for Northern Ireland, not any specific towns. For instance the dialling code for Derry is 02871 not 028, Newtownards is 02891, not 028 etc. Your removal is rendering the codes incorrect as the 028 is simply the sub country code. Unspecified source for Image:Nationalirishbanklogo.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Nationalirishbanklogo.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:51, 9 November 2007 (UTC). Speedy deletion of Image:ROINumbered.png[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:ROINumbered.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[Talk:Image:ROINumbered.png|the article's talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Is the ROI Postal Addresses about what is currently in Irish Postal Addresses or what might be in the future. 4. Did you intend that what might happen in the future as a Postcode for Ireland would be included or just what had happened so far?

Thanks for the clarifications. Dubhtail (talk) 12:16, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for your message. I'm not on Wikipedia much any more. I honestly can't remember doing that redirect, but I think it was probably because I searched for "Irish postcodes", couldn't find it, so redirected it to a page which did contain that information. In the future, when postcodes are finalised, it make sense to develop this into a seperate page about them.

As for why the page is called "Republic of Ireland postal addresses" - well, I didn't set up, but I presume it is because it only refers to the Republic, not the whole island. It is not really sensible, IMHO to have Northern Ireland postal addresses on the same page as ones from the Republic, because they are separate systems.

As for the future - I don't know! I'm sure others will decide!

A tag has been placed on File:GardaSíochána.PNG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The article Newry Democrat has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article does not make any claim to notability and is unreferenced.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
