Hello. In a recent edit to the page First day on the Somme, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the first author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. Collaboration is required[edit]

I see you making changes at the German football article I just reverted you on, after my reverted (admins: defensible edit on their part, not EW in this case) so unless you have notifications turned off, you must have gotten an alert for my revert. In the message sections above, several editors have tried to advise or warn you about problematic editors, including one admin, and I know you are aware of it, because of your brief response in one case. Collaboration with other editors is a key feature of Wikipedia, and you should discuss with other editors when they leave messages about your editing behavior. In my opinion, you are very close to having your editing privileges suspended due to improper corrections of previously correct English wording, punctuation, or style, and if you wish to avoid being blocked, you should 1) change your editing behavior in articles, and 2) respond to editors who attempt to contact you on this page. Tricky grammar and punctuation edits[edit]

Most of your recent comma-related edits and double-quote plus period edits were improvements, so thanks for those. However, please familiarize yourself better with the Wikipedia:Manual of style, and please do not make edits about English grammar or style if you are not sure of what our style manual has to say about it. Other editors and I have undone the following edits of yours:

German submarine U-1020 – there is nothing wrong with referring to ships as "she". "It" is also allowed, but do not shift from one usage to another. See MOS:SHIP.
Discovery HD (international) – period before paren, when it's a whole sentence. See MOS:PAREN.
Kelly L. Moran – period inside quotation mark, when the end of a full quoted sentence is also the end of the sentence containing it. See MOS:LQUOTE.

In other cases, such as prepositional phrases of time ("From 1821...", "In 1856...", etc.) they are optional, and usually not necessary when less than four words. The following changes were unnecessary, and do not improve the article, but neither are they harmful, so I have not reverted them:

Some of these cases are very tricky, such as the Kelly L. Moran example, which even a lot of experienced editors might have gotten wrong, and as a new user, you cannot be expected to know every little detail of the WP:Manual of style. However, that is kind of the point: until you *do* know it backwards and forwards, that is all the more reason that you should not attempt to fix tricky edge cases in grammar or punctuation, until you have established a track record here and demonstrate that you have mostly mastered the MOS and can apply it correctly. Otherwise, it's more a bother than a help, and makes extra work for other editors to find and fix.

In general, I get the feeling that you aren't using the Manual of style, but rather depending on your sense of what is correct in English, according to the way you have been taught, or perhaps what seems logical or correct to you. If that is indeed what you are doing, please stop doing that. Instead, please spend some time with the Wikipedia:Manual of style. If I were you, I would stop all edits involving punctuation, until such time as you have a thorough command of the MOS:.
