Your recent edits

[edit]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 14:25, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Eventualist

[edit]

It is pretty simple. Add the following to your user page:

{{User Editor even}}

The double brackets signify a template. It will look like this:

even This [[:Category:Eventualist Wikipelink titledians|editor]] is an eventualist.

Components of a cited source

[edit]

{{helpme}} I was going through the instructions required to create a good article. I searched on WP, but cannot find that what components should each source include. So we also need to write the author name even if it wasn't featured newspaper article and just a simple news article. Also please mention any page, if any, which discusses this matter in detail. Muhammad Hamza (talk) 06:33, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you are referring to how your references are formatted you may want to review WP:CITE for the style manual on citation. -Optigan13 (talk) 06:38, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How to request a review

[edit]

I am currently working on the article Tablighi Jamaat and i need someone to review and suggest the possible areas for improvement and some recommendations. Is there some place where i can request a review? --Muhammad Hamza (talk) 17:28, 7 May 2009 (UTC) {{helpme}}[reply]

You can post your request at WP:EAR to get other editors to take a look at the article and perhaps give you some suggestions or advise.JavierMC 18:10, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion

[edit]

you deleted the image at Junaid Jamshed. Can i kindly know the reason?Muhammad Hamza (talk) 20:53, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your kind request. I deleted the image as the former version (not the one you can see now) was a copyright television screen capture (specifically this one) that was incorrectly marked with a GFDL licence - Peripitus (Talk) 21:49, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

your talk page seems full of complaints against deletions. But anyways... thanks for clarifying about junaid jamshed image. sincerely appreciate that. Hamza [ talk ] 13:06, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kindly dont take it offensively. But seriously man. I ain't the only one who is complaining about you not using the article discussion page for mentioning the reason. May i kindly suggest that people will find it more appropriate if you avoid deleting anything until you've written notes on discussion page. It just gives the image of completely ignoring one's efforts. As i said... please don't take it offensively. Hamza [ talk ] 13:16, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No offence taken. My talk page is certainly replete with complaints about images as this is the primary administrative area I work in here. I delete a large number of images, mostly for copyright infringement, and the often new and inexperienced uploader's of these images. This naturally leads to a complaints - and this will never change as long as we have a continuing stream of new users and Wikipedia remains the free encyclopedia. At least I don't work in the biographies of living people area, administrators there sometimes get some impressive hate mail. As for dropping notes on talk pages, I generally do this in retrospect as in: find an unambiguous copyright violation -> delete it straight away -> leave an appropriate note on the uploader's talk page. - Peripitus (Talk) 21:50, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriate Templat/tag

[edit]

{{helpme}} If i find a particular SECTION of an article unorganized then which template/tag should i use to mark if for THIS SECTION NEEDS REORGANIZATION. Similar template exists for the article but not for the section.

Could you specify please which template you are referring to that exists only for articles and not sections? Regards SoWhy 10:56, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I presume you're referring to {{Cleanup-reorganize}}. The easiest way to do what you want (with this template) is, to use the code {{Cleanup-reorganize|1=section}}, as oppose to {{Cleanup-reorganize}}. Cheers - Kingpin13 (talk) 11:24, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MQM Page

[edit]

{{help}} looking at the history of the page MQM, the fans have been quite busy in reverting and removing the material from the page. My recent edits were also removed. Is there any way to protect or limit the number of users who edit this article?

Stubs list

[edit]

{{help}} There is a page here in wiki which lists all the stubs related to article maintenance including the cleanup stubs and the stubs that say that this section/article requires citations or more inline citations or cleanup or reorganization etc. I cannot find it again. Can anybody post its link. I am tired. Hamza [ talk ] 22:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that you might mean the cleanup campaign, especially perhaps Cleanup 2009. You might also be interested in helping out with peer reviews; you could browse the many projects, look at the newest articles, or maybe just something random. We have a list of requested articles, requests for feedback, and a huge backlog of tasks.
Hopefully, this will give you some ideas. For more help, you can either;

Source Material

[edit]

{{help}} In the article MQM, there are two references which point to an Asian Survey Journal articles originially published by Univ. of California. These both articles are hosted on Scribd whereas they both are to be purchased if one wants to view it from University of California website. Now should i keep both these articles on reference list or should i delete them for reason that they are not publicly available from the original publisher?

Forget about the fact they are available on scribd (or anywhere else) - are they reliable sources? They sound like they are published, peer-reviewed journals - thus meeting the requirement of reliable sources. The availability of them online is beside the point; if they were published by what we may consider a reliable source, then they are verifiable. A reader could, in theory at least, obtain the publications. The link to an online publication of them is merely a convenience to the reader.
For example: I could cite a plaque on a war-memorial, here in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, where I live. That would be a reliable source. For you to verify it, you would have to visit. If I give precise enough details as to its location, then wikipedia would assume good faith - ie, wikipedia would 'trust' that my facts based upon the plaque were legitimate (unless proven otherwise).
If I were to take a photograph of the plaque, then that might help - but, it would merely be a convenience. I would not be citing the photograph; I would be citing the plaque itself. I could, in theory, have changed the photograph. I would be citing a reliable source with full details; the photo is irrelevant.
In the same way, in this case, scribd is irrelevant.
I hope that this clarifies?  Chzz  ►  07:43, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My concern was due to the possibility of referencing a pirated material. But apparently the source is not as important as the material itself. Thanks for the brilliant reply.Hamza [ talk ] 09:24, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cquote Tag alignment

[edit]

{{help}} If i use the {{Cquote|<quotation>}} tag, then it produces the quotation automatically in centered alignment. How do i left align it?

It is not recommended to use cquote in articles; just use {{quote|whatever}}, as I have done here. That uses HTML's "blockquote" syntax, so the exact appearance depends on the users own preferences - which is preferable to 'forcing the format'. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Quotations.

Reknowned columnist = Good source

[edit]

{{help}} Can i cite facts mentioned in a newspaper column as credible reference. Is is not a news item but a column by journalist. The newspaper i am talking about is the largest selling pakistani english newspaper and the columnist is very well known in Pakistan.

Could you perhaps cite it a a direct quotation? For example, if the colum said this;

"Chzz is one of the best guitar players in the world today"

...then you could say;

One newspaper columnists said that Chzz was "one of the best guitar players in the world"<REF> [http://some-website.com/some-article.html Footown News], 1 April, 2001 <REF>

...that would be OK, if the source checked out.
You should not use it to say, for example.

Picture Policy

[edit]

{{help}} I am almost done with the infobox for article Tablighi Jamaat but i was looking for an image. I found a good one on flickr. I contacted its author for permission and he asked me whether the image can be used commercially once it is on wikipedia? I don't know the answer. Do you? Hamza [ talk ] 19:14, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it can. We cannot use images that are 'CC non-commercial'.
Anyone can copy Wikipedia content, and use it for any purpose. Many websites have copies of Wikipedia articles, and some of them carry adverts; that counts as 'commercial use'.
So, pictures can only be used if they are 'CC' or 'CC-BY-SA' (attribution). Except for special exceptions (such as a logo, under "Non-free fair-use"), we cannot use images that do not permit commercial use.  Chzz  ►  19:32, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{help}} I asked the owner of this image for if i can use this image on wikipedia. He agreed while knowing that copyright status as chzz (thanks chzz!) explained above. He will email me the original image in few days. Will there be any problem if i upload this image while this image is on Flickr with "All right reserved" statement mentioned on its page?

You need to either have the original page change the status or (preferred) to have him send an email of agreement to the image people (see at the bottom of WP:DCP).
Warm regards, JaakobouChalk Talk 14:51, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You can perhaps ask them to send the picture attached to the text in user:chzz/help/myboilerplate. If they complete that text (by adding their name and the date), attach the picture, and email it to [email protected] then we can sort it out. Once that has been sent, please ask someone to check for it, using another helpme. Cheers.  Chzz  ►  15:03, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{help}} I requested the author of image on flickr to change the image copyright status which he thankfully changed. This is the image. Is the copyright status acceptable to be used on wikipedia?

No. For an image to be free enough for our purposes, derivative works must be permitted. That license does not permit derivative works, so it's not free enough. Algebraist 02:16, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
With the exception of Non-free content, only images tagged as BY (CC-BY) or BY SA (CC-BY-SA) are allowed.
This image has the "No derivative works" tag. Images with any license restricting commercial use or the creation of derivative works may not be used on Wikipedia.  Chzz  ►  02:24, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Muhammad Hamza,
On this image you can see a small creative commons logo at the bottom right of the page. It links to [1] which indicates by-sa/2.0, or Attribution-Share-Alike. There is no non-commercial or no-derivative clause. You can upload it on commons using the flickr tool you will find in the list when importing your file.

(edit conflict)
The whole point is that the information should be verifiable - ie a person reading the article should be able to 'check the facts' for themself. However you achieve that does not really matter; just give as much detail as you can. There are many ways to make citations; please have a look at my own little gudes, user:chzz/help/ref and user:chzz/help/refs. Also, look at other existing good articles and especially featured articles.
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.

Please be more careful

[edit]

You moved Abdul Wahad to Abdul Wahab (detainee).

Please understand that this was a very damaging act.

Some people, including me, think it is disruptive to go and rename articles you aren't working on, without first discussing it on the articles' talk pages. Some people think WP:BOLD authorizes such acts. I disagree. For those of us who aren't administrators undoing renaming isn't always possible.

But, even if you had established a consensus that a move like this was a good idea you made several serious mistakes.

  1. You have a circular loop. There a blue link for Abdul Wahab in Abdul Wahhab (disambiguation). It says it points to the Guantanamo captive. But, instead it points back to Abdul Wahhab (disambiguation). That is deeply broken.
  2. You left Abdul Wahab at the top of the disambiguation page. And you put Abdul Wahab (detainee) at the bottom of the disambiguation page. These two entried are, nominally, for a single individual. But anyone who ends up at the disambiguation page is going to try to first broken link, and find it doesn't work. Readers are very unlikely to look for a second entry in the list, because articles aren't supposed to have multiple links on a disambiguation page.
  3. If a redirection is done properly readers shouldn't end up at the disambiguation page. Please look at Special:WhatLinksHere/Abdul_Wahab. See all the articles that point to Abdul Wahab, which you redirected to the disambiguation page. They should all redirect to the article on the Guantanamo captive 961.
  4. What made you think that Abdul Wahab (detainee) would be a good alternate name? I accept that this was a good-faith mistake. There are about four dozen Guantanamo captives whose names needed to be disambiguated because of a true name collission. About half of them needed to be disambiguated from other Guantanamo captives, like Abdul Ghani (Guantanamo captive 943) and Abdul Ghani (Guantanamo captive 934). To be consistent with that half the other half have names that follow that form. If disambiguation was really necessary it would be named [[Abdul Wahab (Guantanamo captive 961)]]. But you haven't established that disambiguation was necessary.

I think the simplest fix, and the first step, would be a request at WP:requested moves to move Abdul Wahab (detainee) back to Abdul Wahab. Please don't cause more chaos by changing the wikilinks shown by Special:WhatLinksHere/Abdul_Wahab to so they point to Abdul Wahab (detainee).

Please note [2] and [3]. Your move cut the number of page views of the article on the detainee to 20 % of what it had been the previous month.

If you really think you have an argument as to why the article on the Guantanamo captive shouldn't be at Abdul Wahab you can seek consensus for your preferred name after the article has been restored to where readers can find it. Geo Swan (talk) 10:01, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
