Lusophobia and 'advertence'
[edit]Firstly, the fact that a link is included to what is a racist website does not mean that I or any other user condones racism, be it anti-Portuguese or otherwise. It is simply to provide a reference and evidence that it exists. If I were editing the page about Holocaust denial, I would use links to equally objectionable websites to show that Holocaust denial exists.
The English word you are looking for is not 'advertence', it is 'warning' or 'caution'. Just as actual in English does not mean what it means in Portuguese, advertence does not mean what 'advertência' means in Portuguese.
For some reason, there is a problem with the rest of the article being displayed, but I will try and fix it.Quiensabe 05:16, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
:Page fixed, link now says WARNING Quiensabe 05:26, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Reply: "advertence" means "attention". I didn't write "warning" or "caution" because these two words are not as neutral as "attention" is. When you say "warning/caution", you are stating a point of view, when you say "attention", you just want to appeal for the reader's critical sense. Advertence is an English word and, on the contrary to what you said, I didn't invent it.
\Ad*vert"ence\, Advertency \Ad*vert"en*cy\, [OF. advertence, avertence, LL. advertentia, fr. L. advertens. See {Advertent}.] The act of adverting, of the quality of being advertent; attention; notice; regard; heedfulness.
Main Entry: ad·ver·tence Pronunciation: \ad-ˈvər-tən(t)s\ Function: noun Date: 14th century 1 : the action or process of adverting : attention 2 : advertency
Noun: advertence The process of being heedful - advertency Derived forms: advertences See also: advert, advertent Type of: attentiveness, heed, paying attention, regard
Noun advertence has 1 sense advertence, advertency - the process of being heedful --1 is a kind of attentiveness, heed, regard, paying attention Derived form: verb advert1
The racist website is not only racist (obviously, the website's creators have the right to show their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs), violating the neutral point of view policy of an encyclopedic reference but also has dozens of factual and historical inaccuracies which is the worst flaw of all.
