[edit]I disagree completely. Rama's arrow 21:11, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- A highly-destructive vandal like Virkshatriya had already been stiffly warned by myself, user:AgentCDE, user:Vivin and user:Lakers. After all that, it is not incumbent on me or anybody else to notify the user on their talkpage when the userpage tag can just as easily inform the user of what has happened to him. The blocking policy instructs notification. While the obvious location is the talkpage, it doesn't mean that I violated policy by tagging his userpage. And as I blocked this person going on a major crusade of vandalism and personal attacks despite multiple warnings, I cannot care less of this difference of opinion between you, me or anybody else. Mainly, I resent that you insulted me without understanding the situation. I cannot let that pass. Rama's arrow 21:28, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- Umm... no, the userpage tag serves the same purpose (in fact, more definitvely) as any notification message on the talkpage. And my beef here is only of you insulting me and not any technicality you are keen to point out. And while we're speaking of courtesies, was it appropriate for you to not drop a note to me about what you thought rather than insulting me on ANI? And I'm not an abusive, destructive vandal at least. Rama's arrow 21:37, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- "Courtesy is the watchword," eh? One would never guess from your own conduct. And what "half the blocking process" are you talking about? As an admin, you click the "block" button and you immediate see the block log below the form. I will have a hard time understanding anybody's need to have warned Virkshatriya in the presence of multiple earlier warnings, an ANI report and his widepsread vandalism activity. If others don't look at the userpage, that is their problem. If you think that insulting a respectable editor/admin is acceptable over your own misunderstanding and inconvenience, there is something wrong with you, pal. Rama's arrow 21:50, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Rama's Arrow's action & response and some pertinent points
[edit]Hello Mel, You have to view Rama's Arrow's action and his response against the background of ingrained incivility on the part of a number of Indian admins. With increase in number of cronies and formation of cabals they don't stop short of flouting any policies. user:Blnguyen, User:Nearly Headless Nick etc. are noteworthy examples. The former never leaves a message or template other than to mark sockpuppets of users who has opposed his POV. See the his log to get an idea of his pattern. For example see, [1]. The latter who has been repeatedly the butt of incivility complaints blocks according to his whims and fancies. An excellent editor who made good contribution has been blocked here on the lamest excuse. See, user:clt13. It is hightime somebody took up the cudgels to check the rot these abusive admins cause. Where do I go to discuss how tolerant or intolerant we should be about usernames?
[edit]Hi, Mel. I see you around quite a bit, and I often find I agree with you when you make a comment on a project page. So it puzzles me when I see your comments at WP:RFCN, because you almost always take the opposite position from mine! After I joined Wikipedia, I spent some time familiarising myself with WP:3RR, WP:NPOV, WP:ATT, etc., and I think I have a fairly good understanding of them. I've only recently started looking at WP:U. When I see people I respect taking a surprising position on something, it makes me hesitate, and I wonder am I missing something. My feeling is that a serious, well-meaning person who registers an account because he or she wants to contribute to the encyclopaedia is very unlikely to choose a name that's a bit controversial, a bit inflammatory, etc., and that there should be less tolerance for a username that "makes a statement" than there would be for the same statement by itself — since that statement is repeated on people's watchlists every time the user edits a page, and is also repeated every time the user signs a post. So, for example, if some hypothetical user put on his user page: "Hi, I'm Andy. I'm a nineteen-year-old geography student and I like picking my nose", I would find it rather distasteful, but I wouldn't go running to an administrator to ask to have Andy blocked! However, if the same person registers as User:I like picking my nose, I'd find it unacceptable, because the user would be forcing unpleasant imagery on people everywhere he went, with his signature, and with his name in page histories, and would also perhaps be forcing people to refer to him and address him in a way they'd rather not. I'd find it rather insensitive and inconsiderate to have such a username.
Similarly, if someone registers the name User:ghdkwtsprxfl, I'd vote against it, because I think it's too much to expect other users to be able to write that name. If I want to leave a message for somebody, and I'm not at a page which has that person's signature to click on, I find it very easy to type "User talk:Jkelly" or "User talk:SlimVirgin" into the search box, and to press "go". I'd be prepared to bend a little, and wouldn't want a name blocked just because it was a bit difficult to spell. But I would think that a considerate user wouldn't want to inconvenience other people by inflicting an error message on them when they try to type his name from memory into the search box!
I know we're not supposed to bite newcomers, and I'd actually like to see something done by the developers to prevent someone from registering something like User:asdfghjwertiouydsfglkjh in the first place, rather than have an administrator block someone who had made some useful edits but who had a name that was difficult to spell! With regard to the "offensive" usernames, I don't think that the hypothetical User:My butt stinks is really going to feel amazed and bewildered and hurt at being blocked two minutes after registering, just as he's getting ready to make some really useful edits to Jane Austen; yet I can still picture people arguing that the name isn't a policy violation. "Allow. It's not an insult: he's talking about himself, not the people he's addressing." "Allow. Some people are too easily offended." "Allow. I can't see any policy violation here." "Allow. It doesn't refer to a sexual act. No violation." Okay, I'm exaggerating slightly, but only slightly. I also think it's bad for the public image of the encyclopaedia to allow usernames that many people would find vulgar or offensive, even if we find that such people are over sensitive. We've already had rather a bad time in the press because of the Essjay scandal, although Jkelly helped to make us look better.[2] And I think if someone from The Times is doing an article about Wikipedia and looks in the history of articles and then reports that the articles have been edited by some of the people with usernames that just scraped through an RFCN, it makes us lose some credibility as a serious encyclopaedia.
Anyway, I'm not trying to force a discussion with you on your talk page. What I really came here to ask you about was whether I should start a discussion on this at Wikipedia talk:Username policy or at Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/User names. I've looked at both pages, and I couldn't really decide. If you tell me which page to take my comments to, I'll paste in most of what I've written to you, and you can contribute or not, as you please. I'd really like to get feedback, not on individual names, but on the whole idea of where the point of tolerance should end. I'd worry less if I saw that all the people saying "Allow" were obvious trolls, but that isn't the case at all!
Regards, ElinorD (talk) 10:34, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. It seems, then, that we disagree less than I thought. I take your point that some people are simply looking to find a way to be offended by a username, but I think the point would be more valid if applied to people who are looking to find a way to be offended by a remark. I have seen people throwing {{npa}} templates around for reasons that I found ridiculous. I still feel, though, that the level of tolerance should be lower for usernames than for other slightly confrontational, slightly "naughty" behaviour, because the username is in your face for the duration of the editor's participation in Wikipedia. I don't think I'm easily offended, or that I'd be very offended by something that other people would find only mildly offensive. I just think that if something is mildly offensive, I'd allow it in a user's comments or on his userpage, but not in his username. I would want to behave sensitively towards a new user who might have innocently chosen a name that had a more vulgar meaning that he was unaware of. (I remember reading that Enid Blyton wrote a new Noddy story in which Noddy finds a penny and goes around asking everyone where he can "spend a penny", and her publisher had to tell her gently that "spend a penny" had another meaning, and that she'd have to change it — which she did!) Cheers. ElinorD (talk) 15:37, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Comments at this user talk page suggest that other Wikipedians are more tolerant than I am! I just wonder how well people would manage if they wanted to leave a message for that user and if they weren't at a page where he/she had posted something, so they had to type the name into the search box from memory. :) ElinorD (talk) 09:33, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, I'm a little confused as to what you're asking about. You say delete, as it has no sources and fails WP:BIO. A source was added afterwards, and two separate ones are currently up. Sancho asked for a merge, which appears to have been done, as you state the material's already there. Even discounting Thatperson's othercrapexists vote, the consensus did lean towards keep. What pushed me over was the immediate AfD nom less than a day after its creation (which is better than some I've seen, but you have to give articles time). If you really think this article is unnecessary, then you're free to merge/redirect it to Rubik's Cube, as I tried to imply in my closing statement. Not postive I uderstood your question, hopefully I'm in the ballpark.--Wizardman 14:44, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. Yeah, I'm still learning on differentiating between keep and no consensus, since they're technically the same result.--Wizardman 18:43, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Most users like yourself are contributing to Wikipedia to improve the encyclopedia, hence the reason why anyone can edit. Other admins would constructively ask users to leave a edit summary and positively state why this aids the site without being offensive. My comment above was in no way disrepectful and I would appreciate it if you would respond to me in the same manner as i find the tone of your response 'Then why did you insist on reverting without the courtesy of an explanation, or a source?' aggressive. Thank you Lionel patrick 21:43, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Mel I've only editing the name of Rihanna's album twice this week, since the album name has been announced. The single features both Rihanna and Nicole and both artists will put it on their forthcoming albums. Nicole's has titled her debut album as Her Name Is Nicole and Rihanna's has titled her third album as Good Girl Gone Bad. Example of other songs that feature on two respective albums are 'Slow Jamz' by Twista and Kanye West or 'When You Believe' by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey which features on 3 albums. Both are visible to view on Wikipedia. But if you are still dissatisfied, i will respect your admin decision and refrain from editing this page. Lionel patrick 22:25, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]of this; can it be tweaked to avoid this sort of change? --Mel Etitis (Talk) 10:18, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Mel, can't remember if I answered this first time around. SB deals with about 200 templates to perfrom this innocuous seeming task, and they can all be misconfigured in many ways. Because the script has developed "ab initio" it is not as systematic as would be ideal, but does indeed add or remove (as appropriate) "date=" in many cases. I have added the two you mentioned. However the long term plan is to get all the appropriate tempates working with "date=", the re-factor the code. (The code has only had a couple of minor re-factors.) So if you notice any other templates where this applies, please leave a nte on my talk page, and I'll fix them up. Rich Farmbrough, 14:27 4 April 2007 (GMT).

Clarification
[edit]Hello,
Regarding my recent contribution to the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science page, I'm not quite sure how the following constitutes advertising:
'On 2 April 2007, an online shop was launched on the Foundation website, with Growing Up in the Universe – a DVD comprising the five one hour lectures Richard Dawkins delivered for the 1991 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for Children – the first release on sale.'
As opposed to your preferred text:
'On 2 April 2007, an online shop was launched on the Foundation website, with Growing Up in the Universe – a DVD of lectures from 1991 – the first release on sale.'
Personally, I'd have thought that mentioning what the lectures were would constitute clarification, whereas 'a DVD of lectures from 1991' seems vague to me.
Apologies if the tone of this appears harsh (the curse of email), but I was a little surprised that what I felt was informative was perceived as spam/advertising. Hiddenart 09:27, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, I think this article is just some guy's vandalism, like he did to the Wesley Jonathan article, see here, and here for what he did to the Aftermath Entertainment article. Also, he added idiotic information such as claiming that Jonathan was both a Crip and a Blood (as if that were possible) at the same time. I seriously think this guy just wants to vandalize everything, please at least take a look at what he did. By the way, the article he created just copied everything from this article, it's pretty obvious. --- Efil4tselaer 00:17, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for deleting that article. Are you sure that you won't give the guy a warning though? Well, adding Wesley Jonathan Records instead of Ruthless Records, creating an article on an album that doesn't exist, adding stuff like Wesley Jonathan is both a Crip and a Blood at the same time, completely removing info about an artist (that is signed to Aftermath) from the current roster of Aftermath Entertainment and adding Jonathan, who is an actor and was only signed to Aftermath for like 2 years and that was 10 years ago, adding "Kid N Play" to the members of N.W.A. (N.W.A. members are Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, and DJ Yella, unofficial member is The D.O.C., and they had some members at the beginnning that just left before they got to do much, such as Krazy Dee and Arabian Prince)... I thought that was vandalism. --- Efil4tselaer 16:02, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Hamilton Bulldogs
[edit]Mel,
Sorry if I removed/merged files prematurely - but the Hamilton Bulldogs statistics (a franchise in operation for 11 consecutive years), was to my surprise subdivided in Wikipedia. This is historically incorrect. While affiliation (Edmonton until 2002, and then Montreal to present) changed, as it does in Hundreds of Organizations, the Hamilton Bulldogs franchise has remained in consistent operation.
The only changes I made were merging the 1996-2002 section and the 1996-2000 Category: Hamilton Bulldogs players.
My concern with the democratic process of Wikipedia in this instance, is that others have altered histroy - I am sure it is a common challenge - but in this instance I have no doubt of the correct position.

A Favour
[edit]Hi there Mel. I need a huge favour. There is a current edit war/edit dispute between myself and William M. Connolley over Global warming (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). I was wondering if, if you aren't busy, you could look into the matter. 3RR has been violated, so feel free to block either one (or both) of us, or you could protect the article. Or any administrative action you see fit. Thanks. Orane (talk • cont.) 21:51, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, this is fine. Thanks for your help. Orane (talk • cont.) 22:10, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- Curious... "3rr has been violated". Certainly by the person you're doing a favour to, who would otherwise have been blocked for it. But by anyoe else? Not at all clear. Certainly "3RR violations abound" is an odd comment. "Please settle things as quickly and as amicably as possible, so that I can unprotect the page" - you aren't naive, so is that just a poor joke? You have looked at the vast history of t:GW I presume William M. Connolley 22:39, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
- I don't understand why you attack this editor. He is simply a disinterested third party. He didn't necessarily do me a favour (there you go again, giving undue weight to some of the things I've said) He did WP a favour by blocking the article from both of us. Please do not perpetuate this argument. Go cool off, Mr. connolley. Orane (talk • cont.) 22:48, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

edits to the reddy page
[edit]Sir, It appears that changes that we are attempting to make to the reddy page are being undone. The material that we are attempting to delete, does not have any verifiable relibale sources or citations attributed to it. Hence we would like to challenge the authenticity of this material. If you are aware of any reliable sources or citations that attest the authenticity of this material, kindly provide pointers to the same. Should such citations be furnished, upon verification of the same, we shall withdraw our request to delete the material in question. Till such time, we would request that the material in question remain in publication at wikipedia. Any material appearing in wikepedia that is challenged, should be verifiable from a reliable source or citiation. If not, it should not be published. The burden of proof for challenged material, should fall on those who wish to see the material published not those who wish to see the material deleted. Should a reliable source or citation not be provided and should the material in question not remain undeleted, we would need to take recourse to legal action. We are seeking legal advise on this matter at this time. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dpraveenkumar (talk • contribs) 20:09, 7 April 2007 (UTC).
Undelete prod-ed article request
[edit]Would you mind undeleting the Rodney A. Smolla article and talk page, please? It's my understanding this is appropriate and can be done by any admin. Erechtheus 23:24, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Check the proposed deletion section of WP:DRV. Unless I'm reading it wrong, you can do this without any vote. Yes, there are new sources and new information to add, and I'd prefer to start from where the article was instead of authoring it from scratch. Erechtheus 23:34, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response and for the attention paid to the article. I see you were able to streamline it quite a bit. Erechtheus 17:07, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

Query
[edit]What are the procedures for dealing with an administrator who persistently edit wars and violates either WP:NPOV or WP:POINT with edits like like this? I recognize that some of the people he is arguing with are being unreasonable, but he clearly isn't helping matters, and the disdain many other admins show for people who complain about WMC seems to simply embolden him to violate policy because of so many other people falsely crying wolf. -- THF 00:02, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- I went to AN/I a couple of weeks ago on exactly this issue and the same WP:POINT-making, and I got yelled at for (1) using ANI, (2) threatened with a ban for daring to suggest that there was something wrong, and (3) WMC gloated in response. JzG in particular wants me gone from Wikipedia because of my resume, and has regularly made personal attacks against me with impunity. I can't stick my neck out, but it's frustrating that how Wikipedia tolerates different sorts of POV-pushing and COI: I'm walking through a minefield where, were I to make a single bad edit on a legal article, there would be administrators ready to throw me off the project, but POV-pushing of a politically correct sort is shrugged off. (I even got a 24-hour block for "edit warring" doing three reverts of my own talk page from someone else blanking it.) It really slants the Wikipedia across the board and prevents it from achieving its NPOV policy. This is something that needs to be raised by other administrators, because if it's raised by me, it's just going to cause people to oppose it. -- THF 10:07, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- I don't even feel safe bringing an RFC; two editors just got blocked for a week on surprisingly thin grounds for raising a good-faith question of COI. (For the record, I think the problem is WP:OWN, rather than COI. I don't have a problem with WMC citing his own blog.) I will put in my two cents if an admin brings an RFC, but this needs to be other admins initiating this given the firepower aimed at anyone who challenges what's going on and the danger of being lumped in with some idiots crying wolf. I completely agree with the experience of Blue Tie expressed here, and you'll notice that threats of blocks were issued to the people who complained on Durova's page. -- THF 20:14, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Somehow you must have "missed" my first edit [3] which actually explains the matter: which as you now realise is all your fault: viz your removal of the consesus "polemical" from the lead; a consensus you'd agreed to yourself. What, do you think, are the penalties for an editor who makes spurious complaints of misuse of admin powers, and who starts edit wars by going against a consensus they've agreed to? Hmm... oh I know: nothing at all William M. Connolley 20:47, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for admitting that you violated WP:POINT in response to what you felt was a single incorrect edit by me.
- I fail to see how my one edit was a start of "an edit war." I agreed to a consensus because I assumed good faith and that a cited sentence complied with WP:V. When I discovered the failed verification, I had a problem, and sought to correct the problem. Other editors, instead of edit warring, raised the issue on the talk page, we reached a new consensus, an improved cite was found to respond to the legitimate objection I had to the violation of WP:Lead section and the failed verification, and the article is better for it.
- My AN/I complaint was hardly spurious; I was tripped up by the fact that the WP:AN/I page incorrectly says that that was the place to make a complaint--and more than one administrator has told me that that was the correct place to raise the issue.
- The fact that you're jumping down my throat now (and with an implicit threat) instead of assuming good faith, for edits that were legitimate and innocuous, exhibits precisely the problem I am complaining about: your actions have the effect, whether intended or not, of intimidating good-faith editors who don't completely kowtow to you. -- THF 20:58, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi Mel. I got involved in the above after it was twice posted to WP:RFPP because of rampant anon reversion / POV. I see that, if anything, it's got worse. I tried warning a few and tagging them (haven't blocked anyone!) but it goes on unabated. I'm thinking of fully-protecting the article at its most agreed-on revision and leave a message on the talk page asking those involved to sort out their differences there. As you're already involved, I'd love your opinion on it. Thoughts? - Alison☺ 01:53, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply on my talk page. Yes, that makes perfect sense & I admire your tenacity :) I'll keep a watch on it nonetheless and fix up the blatant stuff - Alison☺ 17:26, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Dr. Bejawada Gopalareddy served as the chief minister of Andhra State from March, 1955 to October, 1956. Ten of the twenty[3] elected Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh including the present chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy are from the Reddy community. Sixth President of India, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy who was in office from 1977 to 1982 is also from the Reddy community. This is regarding the page Kunal Pandya which you marked for deletion. If you think that the word 'high profile' is an unsubstantiated claim then you could have rather chosen to edit/delete this word and not the whole article.
The second link is to metrojoint.com of which Kunal is the co-founder. They don't have any management page on metrojoint so that I can link it. A few regional newspaper articles lead me to create this page as he is perhaps the first and only entreprenuer from the state of Gujarat (India) to venture into an internet company. These local newspapers do not have a web version. He owns ncrypted technologies (ncrypted.net) and you can find a link of them on metrojoint itself.
Democrazy
[edit]Mel, The article on the independent film Democrazy (film), by Michael Legge which we both worked on has dissapeared. I see no new votes for deletion for it or anything. This article was one that was targeted for deletion two years ago and it looks like some revival of this may be why it's gone. Just thought I'd let you know since you had restarted the article after it was speedy deleted previously. Plank 22:48, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for looking into it. I hadn't thought it read like an advertisement but if I have time I'll try to rewrite it provided it's not deleted before then. Plank 15:51, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Reddy
[edit]Thanks, Mel. I'll have a look. And I'm planning to reduce the list of places named after Reddy drastically. I found from a website that there are indeed many such places, but most of them are small villages. Let me know if you think there's any problem with this. Itsmejudith 08:07, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- Having had a look I see that the page is currently in the version you last established. I don't mind helping to keep it there but have a few quibbles about the points under discussion. In relation to the notability of the proposed notables, I'm against the inclusion of the US-based cardiologist but in favour of the inclusion of the bank governor and the chief minister. Even though neither currently have articles they occupy/occupied important positions. I would also include the members of the Raya Sabha as well as members of the Lok Sabha, since the former is the upper house of the Indian parliament; again they will be red links for the time being. I don't think the word "feudal" needs to be included at the beginning, since it is a word fraught with conceptual difficulties. Later in the lead paragraph Reddies are described as "landlords". The style of the lead is still pretty weak and I will have a go at rewriting it when I have a minute. Itsmejudith 08:36, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
- No, I'm really profoundly ignorant about the topic and have been doing much the same as you. I try and cross-reference a bit between Indian history articles for consistency. Ideally we would bring in some knowledgeable Indian editors but there seems to be a difficulty in that few people in India have broadband access. Itsmejudith 09:11, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Dear Mel Etitis, I had painstakingly (no exaggeration) edited an article on Velagapudi Ramakrishna, yesterday. Today to my surprise, I see that you have undone all my additions or editing and futher go to say "(rm series of unexplained & largely unsourced edits which introduced much poor formatting, PoV material speculation, etc.)."
Let me remind you that the essence of Wikipedia is to act as a resource of information, more than, as the testimonial or a work of literature by an English scholar from Oxford University. How could you come to the conclusion that my edits were unsourced? There are public records , which you could yourself have found out had you taken pains.
Its far easier to destroy than create something useful. Proactive destruction is far more dangerous than the former.

[edit]Forgive me for the mistakes on my part.
Uncited edits are quite the norm in Wikipedia. It is just not possible for one to cite the source for every single fact presented. It also messes up the appearance. My facts could have been verified by any 'Tom, Dick and Harry,' by simply performing a Google search. Please undo whatever you have done to my edits (if possible), for I believe in the truth, and have no intention whatsoever to make up 'facts' or glorify somebody. Altruism 11:15, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit]You've got me wrong, I guess. Major facts or additions, I agree do need, to cite a source. But how can one get the source for every line of addition that is made. Think about it and have a look at most articles in Wikipedia, few carry the source for the greater portion of the article. Anyway, don't you agree, that to comment or edit or censure an article one needs to be an authority on the subject or part of it, apart from being in the know of rules of Wikipedia and the English language. The first requirement is paramount, and not the other way round.
Anyway I was just making my point. No hard feelings or offense intended. Kindly undo your changes for the article concerned (if possible). I'll try to cite sources in most places, else forget it. Bye. Regards, Amar Altruism 12:11, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi!
Since you are a classicist, and a user who had previously commented on a similar issue in the past, I wanted your input to this: User:Haiduc proposed some changes for Demosthenes. I was reluctant to accept them, but then I let him add a new section, which I just modified a bit. You can see the discussion here, and the recent additions in the article's recent history (Haiduc's addition and my modifications). As the main contributor of this article I cannot be as objective as I would like. Since I am not yet sure about the utility of such additions, and since we speak about a FA and the issue is serious I think that your opinion and your input (among those of other prominent classisists I've also invited to the discussion) will be very useful. Please, have a look at the article and the discussion! Thanks in advance!

Link spam
[edit]Just wondering why you removed my addition of PingCOPA Network Monitoring Software in "Network monitoring" with the comment "rv-link farming".
Whilst I appreciate that it is indeed a link, it was placed in a section entitled "External Links". The majority of these links are to commercial software. I checked this fact before posting my link.
We are a small software publisher trying to compete with the mighty. I checked we were in the right place, I checked it was relevant. If there were no other commercial links then that would be all well and good, but other software can have links, what is your logic for banning ours?
Alternatively, if you could advise of a better location to link our software I would appreciate it.
Many thanks.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Simoncraythorn (talk • contribs) 23:17, 10 April 2007

The first words are, and I quote, "The Great Big Quiz have today been in touch...." - NO BRITISH in the title, and even if you tuned in to the channel (SKY 840, Freeview 20 and VM 123), you would ACTUALLY HEAR THEM call themselves "The Great Big Quiz" Tgbbqfan! 23:13, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Janet Jackson's discography
[edit]Please stop inflating Janet Jackson's album sales. The correct sales info is right on the source.72.94.46.100 02:27, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
I have to say I'm becoming concerned now. This revert was quite inappropriate. It reintroduced violations of Wikipedia:Redirect and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (abbreviations). It removed the Shakira chronology completely along with the alternative cover (which is sourced). My edits were explained with the edit summary, and your repeated use of this edit summary is concerning. This revert also had a similar effect; if you disagree with the use of UK instead of U.K. or the use of the Shakira chronology, the talk page is the place to discuss this. Also, not including an edit summary is no reason to revert; please exercise common sense. ShadowHalo 03:48, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'm referring to the section titled Don't fix links to redirects that aren't broken. "In particular, there should never be a need to replace [[redirect]] with [[target|redirect]]." Reverting unproductive edits is fine, but doing large-scale reverts ends up leading to WP:OWN and prevents productive edits from happening. ShadowHalo 14:34, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Eazy-E
[edit]Commas in dates have no effect (fortunately): the point of linking dates is that readers see them according to their own preferences:
13 April 1967 — April 13, 1967
1967 13 April — April 13, 1967
April 13 1967 — April 13, 1967
April 13, 1967 — April 13, 1967
I don't know why you again reverted the article to include the pointless commas (despite the time I took above to explain matters to you) and to introduce HTML to the infobox that goes against WikiProject style. Could you explain?
Last chance; if you continue to revert to a non-standardly and poorly formatted version, you'll be blocked from editing for disruption.
- I don't get any of this. This all seems petty.
- First of all, I DID NOT INTRODUCE HTML code into the article. Check the edit history if you care. And, using the spacing command ("< sp >") makes the information easier to read and keeps it from looking sloppy -- as you'll clearly see in my re-posting of your response from my page. BTW, there are tons of other infoboxes that use the spacing command in them. And, we all want quality in our articles, RIGHT???
- Secondly, your beef about commas is pointless in theory. This wasn't a problem until you made it one for yourself. In the United States, we don't follow a DATE-MONTH-YEAR format, so the commas are correct in their placement. And, as we see, they don't show up double even if we add them. So again, what's your point?
- And, lastly, your revertions removed an important set of words I added regarding Eazy's illness -- his condition deteriorated rapidly from the time of his being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS until his passing only ten days after the announcement. If you wanted to make yur insipid changes, you could have at least kept this line intact.
- In short, I feel you are being nitpicky and you fail to see the "big picture". Have you ever studied writing? Are you a professional writer? If you answer yes to either or both, then you'll see your "arguments" are pointless. There is nothing "poorly formatted" about the article until you made these unnecessary changes. I'm reverting back, and do not threaten me. Rollosmokes 07:03, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Mel! I pondered over our conversation for a long time yesterday and concluded that the mistake is mine. Citing sources though not the norm in practice, goes a long way in improving the quality of Wikipedia's articles. However, what I didn't like was your over-zealous "reverted edit" instead of a more gentler way, like a remainder on my talk page. Moreover, I emphasize that some facts, are spread mainly by word-of-mouth, verified by several sources, who simply can't be cited. I hope you can understand the practical difficulties (or impossibilities) involved here.
Now, coming to business; here are the facts with sources (as far as possible):
1. KCP was initially started as Krishna Commercial Products (Source: http://www.kcp.co.in)
2. It is "Jeypore" not "Jaipur Sugar...". "Jeypore" is a town in the Orissa-Chattigarh border, in Rayagada District, Orissa, India. (Source: Rayagada )
3. He was survived by two sons and a daughter. The group was split among (Late) V Maruthi Rao, V Lakshmana Dutt and Smt. Rajeswari Ramakrishnan. (These are facts heard, verified and re-verified by me from several sources)
4. Smt. Rajeswari Ramakrishnan's son R. Prabhu is a 5 time Member of Parliament and a former Union Minister in India (Source: http://164.100.24.208/ls/lsmember/biodata.asp?mpsno=2846)
5. The V R SIddhartha College of Engineering, near Vijayawada is named after him. (Source: http://www.vrsiddhartha.ac.in)
6. His father (pre-adoption surname: Katragadda) originally hailed from Tellapadu, Maddipadu Mandal (Prakasam District.) See (http://wikimapia.org/#y=15661625&x=79949167&z=18&l=0&m=a&v=2) (Source: A fact heard verified and re-verified from several sources)

[edit]I think the album should be named 8 Mile Soundtrack instead of yours Music from and inspired by the film 8 Mile, first, because the title is capitalized wrong way and wrong itself (the true title is Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture 8 Mile), and second, because the Soundtrack consists of Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture 8 Mile AND More Music from 8 Mile. Hi Mr. Mel! How r u? I’m glad too, that we’ve indeed reached an agreement. The last I want is animosity either in the physical realm or the virtual. All’s well that end’s well :-) J Please find below the facts with their respective sources about Velagapudi Ramakrishna.

Thank you for the guidance. Also, I've had a look at the Ramakrishna (disambiguation) and made some minor edits to some of the articles there. Ramakrishna is a popular Indian name, due to which, I may not be able to point towards, any personalities left out.
I've also created and edited an article on Tellapadu. Could you please let me know, as to how I can embed an aerial view of the village, which is stored in my PC? Kindly give your feedback, if possible.
I'm reasonably good at topics on Indian Geography and History, Finance (esp. Derivatives and Stocks), Indian Industry, Sugar, Islam, Hinduism etc.. I'll only be too glad to assist you with any of these.

SmackBot
[edit]Here Smackbot moved a graffito, presumably mistaking it for a stub — I don't suppose there's anything that can be done anout that, but I've often wondered why it moves stubs from the bottom of articles to part way up. At the bottom makes more sense for them, because they're temporary additions. --Mel Etitis (Talk) 09:53, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- AWB puts stubs after categories but before interwikis. Personally I woul like to see all stubs and other maint. templates right at the end, but for stubs that's good enough. What you saw with the graffito was the cats being moved to the end. Rich Farmbrough, 11:37 12 April 2007 (GMT).

Your comment
[edit]Mel,
I have just noticed your comment here: User_talk:Athaenara#John_T._Reed. I cannot reply there since you've said you won't go back.
Listen, I would be delighted to revise my opinion of your behaviour. However in respect of Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/3RR#User:Mel_Etitis_reported_by_User:BozMo_.28Result:no_action.29 you say "my defence of the article received support of the other admins who commented": that isn't how I read the comments there. Which "admins" exactly "supported your actions"? Even the one admin who judged no offence commented you were aggressive sometimes User_talk:BozMo#BLP. The only other who commented said you "should have known better". On the Reed article itself you have gone head to head with at least five other editors on the wording in an aggressive way. Some of these were 80-20 in your favour some were 50-50. But you were pretty acid with the other (good faith) editors on all of these. Why? I took a bit of time and went through the other stuff you've done (apart from winding up Connolley) and you are often a high quality, thoughtful editor. You even take time out to encourage people. It really makes me wonder if you've got intermittent pain or something. What's up? --BozMo talk 15:00, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply, which I appreciate. On the minor point of fact I meant your (entertaining) comment at the bottom of the section starting "I don't want to interrupt a private kvetchfest..". On the other bit I can understand totally you getting irritated at incivility and reacting strongly: close to the story of my own life (off WP). I also accept your perrogative in providing explanations of your reactions; in the case of Connolley they ring true (he took offensive at a comment you made which I thought was light and elegant not a heavy accusation: albeit once he took offence backing down and apologising rather than aggressive defence might be better). But I wonder also if there is a style thing which makes you appear more aggressive than you are and gets incivility back. Anyway I will try to read you better. --BozMo talk 17:25, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Shall we see, Mel, what the CEO of Play To Win TV Ltd has to say about what you are doing to the "Great Big Quiz" page?? Art television >>>> retitled to a more defensible Quality Television
[edit]Hi, Thank you for your comments on the Art Television article. Over the last day, more on-topic information (about quality television) has been added, and the dubiously-related content was purged. As well, the title has been changed to "Quality Television". While the term "Art Television" can only be attributed to Kristin Thompson, there are several scholars who use the term "quality television." As well, as my note on the talk page points out, there is no "competing" article on serious, quality television programming. I will be happy to hear further comments on the article, as I am anxious to improve it prior to the April 16 deletion dateNazamo 20:07, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, I would agree with you if the article on "Quality Television" was a list of "my favorite shows" or "shows I think are of high quality." But the new version of the article shows that scholars use the term to describe narratively-complex, serious shows.Nazamo 20:51, 12 April 2007 (UTC)...As described by the sources, there is are formal and stylistic elements which identify "quality television" (or for Kristin Thompson, in her book, "art television). Two professors from the UK provide a list of quality television shows. (In April 2004, Dr Janet McCabe (Trinity College, Dublin) and Kim Akass (London Metropolitan University) organized a conference on “American Quality Television” to examine the “particular strand of American television known as Quality TV” (e.g., St Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, thirtysomething, Twin Peaks, the X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, ER, The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Six Feet Under).Nazamo 20:55, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Switching to the concept of "quality television" is much more defensible than the former "art television" article. The old "art television" article left me with my one source (Kristin Thompson), and then trying to beat "art television" out of distantly related concepts. Now, though, with Quality Television, I can show a scholarly consensus on the existence of a concept/genre of quality television. There are entire books on quality television (e.g.,,Feuer, Jane, Paul Kerr, and Tise Vahimagi, editors. MTM-'Quality Television.' London: British Film Institute, 1984.)Nazamo 21:02, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

full plot to ain't miss bahavian
[edit]This episode begins with the president, Mr. Martinez, introducing and welcoming Meena Paroom and her family to America. Victor Baxter, Cory’s father, believes Cory has a crush on Meena. But untruthfully, Cory dissents to his father's statement. The president’s daughter, Sophie, only wants to eat Chef Victor’s French fries. The president’s Chief of Staff, Samantha Samuels, tells Chef Victor not to feed Sophie French fries for breakfast. But he submits and gives Sophie what she wants.
At school, Meena’s father, the ambassador of Bahavia, returns Meena’s backpack. Mr. Paroom is very strict about preserving his culture, so Meena dresses up culturally when he comes, then returns back to a casual attire after he leaves. Sadly, Meena admits she hates to hide a big part of her life from her father.
Back at the White house, the president’s Chief of Staff wants Chef Victor to stop feeding Sophie French fries. So, Victor presents Sophie a farm made out of vegetables, but Sophie still wants her fries.
In another room of the White house, Cory, Meena, and Newt practice a new song Cory created called “More than Friends.” Unexpectedly, Mr. Paroom walks in and tells Cory that he is the reason why his daughter is not behaving like a Bahavian. Mr. Paroom demands Meena not to see Cory and Newt ever again. Meena has no choice but to respect her father’s wishes.
While Cory and Newt is stunned about Mr. Paroom’s decision, they agree to compromise with Meena’s father to change his mind. During a special dinner, which Meena’s family is invited to, Cory goes up to Mr. Paroom and greets him in a disrespectful way according to their beliefs and culture. Although Mr. Paroom is pleased that a Bahavian famous flute player performs at the dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Paroom are appalled and unpleased about what just happened to them. Even though the president is glad to see Sophie eating her vegetables, Mr. Paroom is fully insulted by Cory’s actions. But Meena is full of happiness, despite the incident.
The next day, while at school, Cory believes Meena is not going to show up, but Meena comes and she's gleeful that she does not have to keep secrets from her father anymore. Cory and Newt are grounded because of their parents believing they caused an “international crisis.”
Inside the kitchen, the president’s Chief of Staff tells Chef Victor that Sophie eats vegetables when she is distracted by excitement. In the end, Sophie realizes she's eating vegetables, but doesn’t care and resumes to enjoy the Bahavian music playing while Chef Victor and the president’s Chief of Staff dances to it.
p.s. i wrote this plot while watching this episode...so i don't think the plot is online anywhere else. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kid1412 (talk • contribs) 09:00, 13 April 2007 (UTC).

If you went to other sections which also featured other Somali Tribe's prominent Figures, like for example this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majeerteen , it's exactly like the one you've deleted of my section. Why are you being biased, either please delete all other sections on Wiki which also feature prominent Somali Figure's by tribe's, such as those of the Isaaq, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaaq , who have a longer list of Prominent/Notable people then i lisetd. Either do this for all the sections of the Somali tribes, i.e. Hawiye, Darood, Isaaq, Dir (clan),etc, etc Tribe's who have also listed their prominent figure's of their respected tribes. [edit]Hi there! I noticed on my watchlist that you recently made an edit to Seamus Heaney as seen here. I figured I'd drop you a line and just mention that Punishment is a popular Heaney poem (though I doubt it was ever published for sale on it's own, as I think it's four or six six-line stanzas... that is, not an epic by any means). You were, of course, right to remove it from the section, as it appears as if that section is for collected works and/or anthologies. In any case, I hope this explains that edit for you! And even going through all that nonsense may not actually be necessary. See Wikipedia:Centralized_discussion/Television_episodes basically says we should merge and redirect into a list of episodes unless the episode is truly notable. Also, per the list of episodes talk page, about 7 episodes or so went to AFD and consensus was to redirect back to the list page. Can we just redirect all the individual episodes unilaterally and be done with it? ⇒ SWATJester On Belay! 02:47, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

I Can't Believe It's Not Blight (more vandalism)
[edit]Hi Mel, I was checking an article on John Elias I edited a while back and came across a blatant piece of vandalism by I Can't Believe It's Not Blight. He replaced the subject's name with "Gubby" all the way through the article. I checked his user talk page and found your warning; hence this short missive. I'm an admin on the Welsh wikipedia but unfortunately not here. He/she would have been banned by now if I had my way but I'm only an occasional contibutor here and have no admin status. Could you consider doing something about it? I don't think it would be a great loss to the wikipedia if he/she went. At the very least a FINAL warning would seem to be in order. Best wishes, Enaidmawr 23:54, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Wowowee
[edit]I'd at least hold off and let people that have knowledge of the show make corrections or personally look into if the edit was bad or not (aka assume good faith). I also don't make it a habit of editing articles i don't know much about and aren't willing to research.
as for deleting the article, go ahead... perhaps it would drive someone to fix it up more but i still don't see why infomation that is 'common knowledge' among people with even a passing knowledge of the subject would needs a cite. Esp for something that doesn't have a ton of online information that would meet the criteria of a good cite in wikipedia. In the case of this article the best cite is turning on the show and watching it, which is why i didn't add this info sooner.
assuming good faith is the best way to go. i don't revert edits unless i KNOW they are untrue, not just because someone didn't explain themselves enough. Harlock jds 13:01, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Futari Ecchi
[edit]Please familiarize yourself with WikiProject Anime and manga, which this article clearly under it's scope. Because if you did, you would see in their guidelines on number 4 on Sections, second bullet it clearly states: "Character names should always be in bold..." Also on the examples for the infobox both linked and unlinked dates are used. I looked over style guides and can not find where it state if dates should be linked of unlinked for the infobox. If you find it where it states this in a guideline, please send a link to it on my talk page.(Duane543 17:35, 16 April 2007 (UTC))
- I advise you to write in a more polite manner instead of talking down to people, even if it is unintentional. Yes, it was inappropriate me to overlink, but so is reverting all of someones work without trying to understand why they were making the edits. If you would have looked at the articles talk page you have seen that it was tagged as being part of the WikiProject Anime and manga. Their are also different types of Manual of Style for different types of articles. Instead, you reverted all of my edits since I forgot to put a description of my edits. Because of the Three-revert rule, I can not change it back (minus the links) for 24 hours without someone thinking that it's an edit war. Don't get me wrong, I repect people like you do a lot copy editing. However this means that you are often at a disadvantage of coming across articles that your not familiar with or what is common place with formatting certain types of articles. (Duane543 00:17, 17 April 2007 (UTC))
- Reverting someone's user talk page is going to far. It was a message, not a warning. Besides I archived it, not delete it (although I have the right to delete it). Just because you use edits summaries every time does not give you the right to revert others work who forget or don't. Look at the page Help:Edit summary, which it is not policy. The use of edit summary is under Recommendations, not a rule or law. You should look at the WP:SR under the Safe behaviors, number 7 and Help:Reverting under When to revert: Don't, the Second bullet, which both clearly state "Do not revert good faith edits". Nowhere does it state revert when the editor doesn’t leave an edit summary. That is your preference! If you continue reverting my edits with no real basis, I will be forced to get other admins involved. (Duane543 22:56, 17 April 2007 (UTC))
- First of all, "Policy does not prohibit users from removing comments from their own talk pages, though archiving is preferred" (from the WP:USER). I archived. Secondly, how does one vandalize one's own talk page thus being in bad faith. It seems to me you rather revert then take the time to check if a message was archive on someone’s talkpage (which the link is on the talk page). Even if I deleted your message, I still would not be breaking any polices. Also a way to check if an article edits were done in good faith without an edit summary is to use the history tab to compare the recent changes with other edits of the past (all changes are in red). (Duane543 00:32, 18 April 2007 (UTC))

BKLisenbee re the POV of the User and his continuing editing Jajouka Bachir Attar etc]]
[edit]As User Lissenbee declined to admit that he had POV, though even that post was actually attempting to justify his POV edits by citing some third parties interview. I have put a few web links that show his POV and a stronger suggestion that he desist from editing Jajouk/Jouka pages. I would be grateful if you would have a look at == BKLisenbee Your POV is confirmed by above post and proved on a quick web search]]== on his talk pages
Thanks I have also asked Svest to look. Abelelkrim 20:19, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Cory in the House pages?
[edit]Was there a discussion to delete all those pages and I missed it? -- Ipstenu (talk|contribs) 01:09, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
Mel Etitis. It seems like you came out of the blues to damage my contributions to Wiki just to try to look good editing article's. FYI:: Both the Leelkase and Gaalkacyo article's were started by me, and i've been contributing to them for years. For you to come and delete the facts which you haven't taken the time to find out about is just Bias. Secondly the Prominent figure's list in the Leelkase article is something also other Somali tribe's have on their articles, and yet you haven't bothered to delete their prominent figure's, but you deleted the Leelkase section. This come's down to two things, either you are from a rival somali tribe who has hate for Leelkase, or your just trying to get more points on Wiki so you can look good by disturbing the real facts. Please take the time to learn about us, and the truth. It's not fair for you to destroy something i've been working on for years. If you know what i'm feeling, then you will do some research. If you completeley ignore this issue, i will do all my power to take this problem to Wiki management, even if i have to take a greyhound bus to travel to their main office. So help me God. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Taajir (talk • contribs) 06:33, 17 April 2007

Network monitoring
[edit]I would appreciate if you let me know why my entry was removed since it is relevant as the other entries in the "External links" part of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_monitoring. Thank you!

If you strongly believe my contributions to these two article's are wrong, then please explain to me which parts are wrong, confusing etc, etc. Also you have deleted almost entirely the Leelkase section of the Prominent Figure's list, but you left the other Somali tribe's prominent figure's list, such as the Majerteen, Isaaq, Warsangeli. That is what i can't understand, why this baisim? Why pick and choose, why not delete from all the other tribe's, but choose only to delete from my tribe?? That is why i believe you are from a rival tribe, who has something against, us since "YOU" persistantly, and passionately seem to be in our way of telling our story. What goes around come's around, and i strongly believe "Karma" is awaiting you. Amen!
- If I knew who this was I'd probably still ignore them. --Mel Etitis (Talk) 08:50, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
re: notable roles re: Judy Ann Santos
[edit]notable because films with these characters won awards and/or shows with these characters received high ratings...

==All Angels==
[edit]I object to you leaving a message on my talk page saying I 'misuse' the {db} tag. The All Angels article had no assertion of notability, reading through the article revealed they failed practically all of WP:BAND. The only vague notable thing was one released album, but WP:BAND states that the criteria is TWO albums released on a major, or major independant, record label, which is not the case with this group.
