Article Feedback Tool, Version 5

Hey all :)

Just a quick update on what we've been working on:

  • The centralised feedback page is now live! Feel free to use it and all other feedback pages; there's no prohibition on playing around, dealing with the comments or letting others know about it, although the full release comes much later. Let me know if you find any bugs; we know it's a bit odd in Monobook, but that should be fixed in our deployment this week.
  • On Thursday, 7th June we'll be holding an office hours session at 20:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. We'll be discussing all the latest developments, as well as what's coming up next; hope to see you all there!
  • Those of you who hand-coded feedback; I believe I contacted you all about t-shirts. If I didn't, drop me a line and I'll get it sorted out :).

about creating an article on wikipedia

Hi Matthew, I recently got rejected of a new article posted on wikipedia. It is about the relationship between information theory and estimation theory. Do you have any suggestions on how I should modify it so that it can be accepted. Actually many of my friends working in this area feel that it is convenient to have a wikipage on this topic because it is a pretty important topic. Thanks for your advice in advance!

Your article was rejected for a very specific reason. It is way too technical. As a user, I don't care about the theory behind what you're writing about. Instead, I would be looking for a very general overview, like history (who discovered it, etc). Your page contains none of that information.

Sanjay Govil ... right now you created a redirect to non-article space which is against policy, and an AFD that currently points to that redirect is in progress. Of coure, the reason we have no comments is because the article was moved. You didn't even NEED to ask if it needed fixing, you merely FIX IT (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 18:32, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

AFT5 release coming up - help us design a banner!

Hey all :). First-off, thanks to everyone for all their help so far; we're coming up to a much wider deployment :). Starting at the end of this month, and scaling up until 3 July, AFT5 will begin appearing on 10 percent of articles. For this release we plan on sending out a CentralNotice that every editor will see - and for this, we need your help :). We've got plans, we know how long it's going to run for, where it's going to run...but not what it says. If you've got ideas for banners, give this page a read and submit your suggestion! Please stop changing the links for Clark Thompson if you haven't finished. It is not clear why the editor moved the article to begin with, and since he seems much better known by the middle initial it probably wasn't justified. -Rrius (talk) 02:29, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Help with Kristóf Nyíri citations

Hi Matthew,

I'm Lora. I am also a university student. But I'm single.

Regarding my submission: Kristóf Nyíri, which is inadequately supported by reliable sources... I am creating this account for Kristóf Nyíri himself, so I have spoken with him on many occasions. I realize this might fall under truth and not reliability, so I would like to clarify which sections of the submission you think require stronger citations. It would help me if you could let me know which sentences/ facts need alternate citations because in other wikipedia articles I have read, many facts are not cited at all, and the article has still been approved.

The citations used in your article are useless, because they're by the subject. You're not establishing notablility by using these citations. Wikipedia sourcing is backwards compared to academic sourcing, we want as many third party sources as possible.

Re-editing Rehearsal Club page

Hey Matthew -- any specific help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. The Rehearsal Club is/was a girl's residence for theater women. Opened in 1913 and celebrating a Centennial next year, 2013. We are trying to record our history using Wikipedia.

All the information listed has been validated . . . can you help me edit what would make the page more readable?

The reason I declined your article is that I have no darn clue what it's about. Your post on my talk page was more clear than the article itself.
Why don't you revise your article, including a lead and a history section? Make it chronological. Support all the information with citations, and make sure that anyone can understand what your article is about. When you do that, you've got a great chance of the articlebeing accepted.

The thing your submission is missing is references. The only references I see are primary sources and a link to the German Wikipedia (which violates WP:CIRCULAR).
I'd recommend that you find other, reliable sources, like newspapers and books. Once you do that, your page should establish notablility better.

Thomas Moore on Lily Kershaw's notability

Concerning the notablility of Lily Kershaw, i refer to the notable musicians article, item 10: Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show, performance in a television show or notable film, inclusion on a notable compilation album, etc.

Her song "As it Seems" was the song played during the ending seen of the season finale and was extremely popular. The reference to the show "Criminal Minds" has her as the singer/songwriter of that song as well as an actress on a previous episode of the show. A person who is both a character in one season and a contributing singer in another episode of the same major TV series is rare and notable. She also has appeared on other very popular TV series as referenced. Since I turned to Wikipedia myself to find out more about her and found that she did not have an entry, I felt she was notable enough to warrant a page.

You're right, we do need better references. You're currently citing Facebook and a television piracy cite. Neither of these establish notability. It would be a good idea if you found reliable sources, like newspapers and books.

Understood. I have replaced the references and removed the Facebook reference but left it in as an external link. I have also removed all references to TuneFind (I didn't realize that was a music pirate site). I will continue to look for better sources, but I believe this person is notable enough to at least get this limited entry into the wiki. Regards, Thom Tmoore (talk) 13:46, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

I did reject your article. Half of the sources you used were primary sources. Anyway, you haven't used nearly enough sources for that size of article. We need sources for every statement you claim. So, more sources are necessary to establish notability.
