War of the BOTS!!!

[edit]

Just thought I'd point out this series of edits:

  1. User:129.21.230.148 vandalises Lucas [3]
  2. User:129.21.230.149 changes the vandalism slightly [4]
  3. User:AntiVandalBot reverts the changes by 129.21.230.149 to the version by 129.21.230.148 (remember, both are vandalism containing profanity) [5]
  4. User:MartinBot reverts AntiVandalBot to the version by 129.21.230.149 [6]
  5. Finally a human, User:Tom harrison comes along and reverts everyone back to the way the article was to begin with [7].

Are we now having Bot Wars? I've seen similar things happen before. For a while Tawkerbot and AntiVandalBot were edit warring on AntiVandalBot's userpage. Is there some way to stop this? ~ ONUnicorn (Talk / Contribs) 18:46, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Try http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Tawkerbot2&diff=prev&oldid=83144961.
BTW: I suggest you put talk links into your sig. It takes up a lot of room in the editor, but is worth it.
BTW 2: You might post using the Bot account when you want people to reply here. I was looking at your page for the post above and wondering why it wasn't in the history for your other talk page when I realized I had the wrong talk page.
Will (Talk - contribs) 05:29, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you can't post using this account, you might either put a link here in your normal signature or reply here to all posts. Will (Talk - contribs) 05:43, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think linking your pages together is required. However, that problem is not completely relevant. When you start a new section at someone else's talk page, you might consider starting the section with a "Please reply here link". I did that on the section on my talk page to show you what I was talking about. The formatting is an experiment. Play with it for your self.
The reason I talked about replying on the bot's talk page (in this case, here) was to keep the entire conversation in one place. Suppose user X comes along with a relavant point. They have only half the conversation (my part) to go on. Even if they know where the other half is, it would take time to piece the conversation together. I watch this page and would see it. Or you could only put a note on my talk page to check this section for updates. Will (Talk - contribs) 06:46, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage notice format

[edit]

Good afternoon. The notice that this bot adds to the vandal's userpage includes a section header. In cases where the bot runs multiple times against a single page, the section headers really disrupt the list of notices and make it harder for an admin reviewer to determine when the vandal was last blocked and for what. Would you please consider removing the section header from the userpage warning? It would make vandal pages like this more readable (like this).

[edit]

In the article Stock market crash, MartinBot correctly identified vandalism. However, that vandal had made an uninterrupted series of vandal attacks. Never mind my comment in the history log. In fact, the reversion was an improvement: It was just complicated by the diff function making me think it had deleted content. clockers This bot just reversed my uncensoring of an article. Fix this bot. 74.139.197.26 06:08, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second this. Someone made an edit to List of Gears of War characters and adversaries that inappropriately censored several curse words in a character's quote, and I edited them back to the original version. MartinBot interpreted this as vandalism and reverted it to the incorrectly censored version. Peptuck 23:54, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If the bot does this, simply revert it. It is rare for it to make mistakes like this, relative to its number of edits, and the algorithm at the moment is quite finetuned. I will take a look at the particular example above and see if anything can be done Martinp23 00:10, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not reverting far enough back

[edit]

In the Thomas Edison article, this bot did a revert [9] which went from extreme vandalism back to less extreme vandalism [10], in which an IP address editor gave a total of 1033 rather than 1093 for the total number of patents. Subsequent human vandal reverters went back to the Martinbot version. In this way subtle vandals can do a slight change in the article followed by a gross blanking and their crap stays. This article is pretty well human patrolled, and reverting automatically to a vandalized version is a bad practice. Every day some vandals change one number or one letter to see if the change gets noticed, and this bot apparently cannot detect those changes. Thanks. Edison 16:58, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stronger Warnings for Blatant Vandals?

[edit]

I'm very happy to see that you're out there reverting vandalism and warning vandals. However, there are times when a blatant vandal needs more than your polite warning --- for a great example, look at Tj7788. In this case, it's a vandalism-only account that needed a final warning (so I added it after your polite warning), but many vandalism-fighters would decline to warn this user because you already warned them. I'd love it if there was a way you could assess whether this account has committed a lot of recent vandalism and give it a stronger warning, but I imagine that's technically very tough to do with a bot. Is this an issue you've considered? Thanks for your good work. Rickterp 15:31, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If they're blatant, block 'em, no sense warning when it's obvious that they won't stop. -- Tawker 17:33, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bot undid vandalism removal

[edit]

Just a few minutes ago, I tagged the page ‎Pambrun, Saskatchewan (now deleted) as vandalism and removed the ~1.6 megabytes worth of "FUCK FUCK FUCK" the author had added to the page immediately beforehand, and your bot reverted it. You should probably add a threshold for the maximum size reduction that will trigger a revert-and-warn (since there is NO legitimate reason why a page should ever get as big as that one did). --Quietust 21:46, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen a few but you have a point there, I'm actually thinking tweaking stuff for tagging for speedy would help a fair bit, thats on the if I ever get time list -- Tawker 17:32, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Warnings

[edit]

Cheers to Martinbot and its developer, it is a tireless and greatly effective vandal-fighter, I do quite a bit of vandal fighting myself, and MB and I often cross pathes. The bot's forte seems to be reverting page blanks, on that it is blinding fast and a relentless patroller. Normally it has already found and corrected most vandalism before I can even get there. One glitch (?) I have noticed a few times though, it that it does not always consistently leave vandals warnings, for instance it corrected a page blank in the Ellen article a few minutes ago, but did not give the user (82.133.104.147) a warning notice on their talk page (I did though) Other than that though, seems to be doing a bang-up job, keep up the good work, as a former web developer and Java coder myself I can appreciate the amount of rule-development and coding that must have gone into a self-guiding program (or perhaps entity) that's so intelligent. Wikidenizen 13:55, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's normally edit conflicts causing that problem - fortunately it's quite a rare occurrence though :) Martinp23 11:41, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What happened? A few weeks ago, it was considered for deletion (not sure if a formal AfD or just tagged). It was a tiny stub then. I then re-wrote it and expanded it a lot. Now it has been blanked and redirected to an episode but none of the info has been put in the episode article. You or the bot revert it but it has been done again. What are your thoughts on reverting to a blank/diverted page? Is this an edit war starting? As a compromise, I think it's ok to have a "see (name of episode) article" in the Nitrium article but redirecting it and not using any of the nitrium article's text in the redirect seems improper.VK35 18:05, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just for notice : French Football Federation. I ve reverted it back to the correct version. --Dionysostom 05:38, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't there be a b in the edit summary?

[edit]

I think the bot should have a little bold b before the edit in histories, watchlists, and recent changes. You know what I mean. The edit summary already sys BOT, but I'm not sure if the b should be there as well, instead, or not at all. I don't rellly mind; it's your call, Martin. Reywas92Talk 20:25, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not actually flagged as a bot – Gurch 14:01, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And not flagged because, well, the bot isn't perfect, and it's a little more controversial/risky than most bot actions (w/ the potential for mistake) -- Tawker 20:26, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help

[edit]

Please help fix the vandalism on Will Beback's pages which has me confused but reverting to the vandal is unhelpful, SqueakBox 21:26, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please block

[edit]

Someone is threatening to block me from editing for an ongoing editing war over the genre of Lamb of God (band) so therefore he is being a hypocrite, please block User: Inhumer from editing or prevent the blocking of me. Please visit my talk page. Skeeker 07:17, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey!

[edit]

I have been checking my Wiki' pages and didn't make any edits or vandalistic attacks. I am using an Internet cafe and made a post to help people uderstand that there are 4 computers here (India) and many people...so please get the facts straight before linking an IP to an individual. Thanks! 202.88.251.31 07:33, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you are using a shared IP and you were not the one who vandalized, then I recomend you get an acount, that way only the edits you make will be linked to you. --Mschel 12:15, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

German University in Prague

[edit]

There is the differnce between the universitys. there were tow different instituence.

Another complaint

[edit]

You reverted my edit of Boca Ciega High School, inserting a huge pile of cruft into a (probably deletable) article. Please be careful when driving your bot. Thanks --Aim Here 17:32, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chinatown, Montreal only half-revert :-(

[edit]

Chinatown, Montreal was only half reverted vandalism. If it looks like the bot fixed the vandalism, but it did not, other people may think it was solved and not look at the other edits... Fantasy 13:05, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
