Welcome from Redwolf24[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. We as a community are glad to have you and thank you for creating a user account! Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Yes some of the links appear a bit boring at first, but they are VERY helpful if you ever take the time to read them.

Remember to place any articles you create into a category so we don't get orphans.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, please be sure to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, or three tildes (~~~) for just your name. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome.

P.S. I like messages :-P

Hi MikeGallagher, welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that you created the Soccer-Europe template, and put it in the "Any-purpose" section of WP:ICT. In the edit historyfor the template, you wrote the the website has granted permission to Wikipedia to use its photos. However, I could not find any such copyright notice on the website, only this:

© 1998-2005 soccer-europe.com. These images may not be used without written permission of the webmaster

Could you provide a link to the notice granting permission to Wikipedia and/or place the text of the notice into the template itself? Also, did the webmaster allow commercial use of images, or did he/she grant permission just to Wikipedia? This is important, as non-commercial-use-only images are no longer allowed on Wikipedia. — EagleOne\Talk 22:00, July 29, 2005 (UTC)

copied from User_talk:EagleOne:
G'day, EagleOne, thanks for the message. I'm still very new at this, so I'd appreciate any advice.
I emailed the webmaster specifically to ask permission for WikiPedia, and it was granted-with-credit in his reply (that's why it won't be found on the website!). I don't know whether the site-owner would have said "okay" if I'd asked for them for commercial use, but I can ask.
But while I'm leaving messages, I have a question. I've used SocEur templates for Christian Vieri and Radhi Jaidi. When I finished uploading the first image (C Vieri) I emailed the soccer-europe owner to ask him if he considered that sufficient. As you can see if you visit the Vieri entry, he did not, and he added a copyright notice to the caption. I don't know if copyright notices in captions is permissable on WikiPedia.
If so, (and if it isn't a non-commercial licence), I'll add a note to the template telling people using the images to put a copyright notice in the caption as well. If not, I'll have to delete the images that're there.
Cheers, --MarkGallagher 01:36, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
Ok, I see. Generally we do not allow images by permission only, as those tend to have restrictions on commercial use. In keeping with the "free encyclopedia" theme, the higher-ups recently anounced a ban on non-commercial use images; if these images turn out to be non-comm-use, then we'll have to delete them and find free alternatives.
Yes, copyright notices are acceptable in photo captions. It is all about how you interpret the "with atrribution" part of the license; some require a notice just on the image description page, other require a notice with every use (that is, whenever the pic is used in an article). If you intend to upload many more images from this site, then I suggest modifying the template to include a copyright notice, a la "Image copyright (©) http://soccer-europe.com/".
While we're on the subject of modifying templates, may I suggest that you put a link to the license in the template itself? You could put the text on your user_talk page (or a subpage). Just make sure to get the webmaster's permission to post the email online before you do so; he/she may not want to have their personal correspondence available for everyone to see!
Happy editing, — EagleOne\Talk 17:01, August 1, 2005 (UTC)

Football links[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you were new and had been editing football articles, so I thought I'd give you a few links that it took me a while to find. Hope they're useful.

Nigel Martyn[edit]

Hi Mark

I like what you've done on the article, and I'll take it off my to do list. I'd never have got round to it anyway :-)

You picked a bad time to ask about the image - my first featured article candidate (Denis Law) got rejected yesterday because an image wasn't properly tagged, so I'm not the best person to ask. Nobody usually cares - it's only likely to come up if you put the article onto peer review or FAC. But if you want to do it all properly, you can have a look at Wikipedia:Fair use, Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use and the description pages for the images of Sunset Boulevard, which one of the more anal strict opponents to many fair use images cites as a good example of how to use them.

And seeing as you're collecting welcome messages, have another one. CTOAGN 20:24, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Soccer-europe images[edit]

Hi, sorry for marking Image:JensLehmannEPL.jpg as a copyvio, I have now reverted it back. It was in good faith, though, the images do not make it clear that permission has been explictly given. Could you please make it a little more obvious? At the very least, there should be a link in the {{SocEur}} template to the full text of the email from the webmaster of the site (or a message on his site saying WP has permission, if it ever appears) licensing the work. O'hea[edit]

Thanks for editing O'Hea page to a 'higher' wikipedian standard. I still think the churches should have foundation dates mentioned. If not why not? Eric A. Warbuton 04:57, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Mark there are 4 churches mentioned but Woodstock's date of foundation is curiously absent in Ebworth. One day will visit Woodstock church to find out but it has low priority.Eric A. Warbuton 04:36, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you delete my entries?[edit]

You are quick to delete some very important info about Barbara Schwarz. Why? Lily Firered 22:31, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barbara Schwarz[edit]

So, I didn't see any discussion on the talk page why the usenet kook award was removed. It's the only reason I had any clue who this person was, and it's cited on pages of some of the other more notable recipients. Your edit summary removing it was ... a little vague. Care to fill me in on why this text isn't appropriate? --24.165.233.150 23:23, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barbara Schwarz article fuddlemark reverted my edit[edit]

I reverted your edit because it was a) redundant, and b) unencyclopædic. For 'a', Ms Schwarz's still being a Scientologist is covered in the opening paragraph, so you don't need to create a new section just to say "she's a Scientologist". As for 'b', section headings like "What Scientology doesn't want you to know" are contrary to Wikipedia:Neutral point of view and entirely the wrong tone to use for an encyclopædia.

Does that make sense? --fuddlemark (talk) 22:43, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, fuddlemark, not so much. Because you see, a) it is covered once in the opening paragraph that she considers herself being a scientologist. And then it is covered three times, that she is not a scientologist: "kicked out", "not a member", "no longer active" - three times it says the very same thing yet in contradiction to the before said fact, that she is a scientologist. b) That is a pity, that headings like "What Scientology does not want you to know" are the wrong tone for wikipedia. I wonder only because a content like that: "According to Schwarz, these events were the result of a conspiracy by a group called the 'Still Existing German Nazi Psychiatrists Mindcontroller Secret Service' (SEGNPMSS)." is the right tone. ??? Explain this to me, please. Lily Firered 14:25, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesia-bio-stub[edit]

Hi - We at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting note you've recently created a new stub category. Did you realise that stub categories should normally be cleared by Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting before creation? That way they can be vetted to check that there are a viable number of stubs (at least 60-100) and that the category does not cross the existing stub hierarchy before the stub is created.

If you can provide any information on why the stub was created, please add a note to entry for the stub at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries giving the reason for it. In addition, if there is any Wikiproject associated with the stub add that information. Thanks. Be aware, however, that if the stub category does not soon reach a viable level of activity, it is likely to be nominated for deletion at WP:SFD.

In the case of Indonesia-bio-stub, the stub type is probably a viable one, and does fit in with the current stub hierarchy, but it should still have gone through the proper proposal process before creation. Grutness...wha? 07:01, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Mark - there shouldn't be any problem with indonesia-bio-stub - as you say, it makes perfect sense as a category and should be well used. The real reason the rule is put in place is to stop people going "oo! lots of countries have stubs, but Liechtenstein doesn't - I'll make one!", leaving us with large numbers of stub types that will never get more than two or three articles. Or adding stub types that cut right across the system we're using to classify articles. Also, since we do most of the stub sorting, we need to keep track of what categories there are - it's no good having a stub category that stub sorters don't know to use. Sorry to come on like "The Stub Police"! In future, though, if you want to make any stub types, we'd like to know about it beforehand. Cheers from across the Tasman. Grutness...wha? 00:26, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thank you Mark for those wiki policy links, I will read them before I do any new editing.

There has been a rather overt Leftwing bias in many of the Australian politics bio pages, for certain hate-figures of the Left such as prominent Liberal politicians. Non-Leftwing readers have been discovering this bias on Wiki, and wish to address it for the sake of objectivity.

PS: (Is this how to send a comment like the one I saw from you when I logged onto wiki? Is there anyway of sending a private message, or does everyone get to see everything?)

...thank you also for writing an article on Trevor Kaine. I've been meaning to write that one for a good year and never gotten around to it. :) Ambi 07:14, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion of Guy Fawkes article[edit]

Hi Mark. I noticed that you reverted the Guy Fawkes article a few hours ago, removing a line recently added by a vandal, but also removing a substantial collection of information added by an anonoymous user. I was wondering if the removal of the anonymous user's information was intentional, or just an accident. Did you think the information was incorrect or unsuitable for some reason? I realise that it wasn't written particularly well, but I was thinking of going through and refactoring it in the next few days. Izogi 23:01, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
