I dont normally do that but I did in that case as a) The block was for an extended period and b) as it's a learning institution there may be teachers etc who edit (with accounts). Emil Kraepelin arbitration case[edit]

I noticed your comments on the Emil Kraepelin (Londhart v. 84...) RfAr urging the ArbCom to accept the case. Perhaps inadvertently, you have placed your statement under the heading "Clerk Notes." I'm sure you agree that you can't take a position on the merits and be the Clerk in the same case. I suggest that you refactor your statement under a heading like "Statement from Non-Involved User MacGyver Magic" and make it clear you are not acting as the Clerk for this case. Just a thought so you don't get criticized for trying to be helpful. Regards, Newyorkbrad 14:08, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I know you're an Arb Clerk in other cases which is why I figured it was inadvertent you were commenting as a user, not as a clerk, in this instance. One of the parties to the case seems to have gotten upset but hopefully will be mollified that you moved it. Regards, Newyorkbrad 17:41, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I guess in this particular case it turned out not to matter much.... Newyorkbrad 20:53, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi!!! I need your help please... I formated my computer and so far everything is fine, but I have a little problem... I can't listen to anything cause 'there's a problem with the sound device'. it says that it's being 'used by some other program' or that I don't have one... do you know where can I download a 'sound device' (something I don't really know what is supposed to be)... btw, I have a soundcard and everything...and the sound was working fine until I formated it. the error is this : 0xC00D11BA

Updated DYK query On 8 September, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article boô, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Very neat! Enjoyed the article very much. Tweaked the tag a bit so it wasn't a surprise what a boô was. Hope it's ok. Cheers -- Samir धर्म 18:17, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of "Bude"[edit]

Hi- Didn't want to edit without consulting you first, as I'm not familiar with Boôs. I think we might change the English definition of "Bude" from "stable" to "hut," "shed," or "shack." One common translation is "stall," but that only refers to a single compartment.

Hi MGM, got your message. I'll be on the road for a few days but will check in soon. I'm new at this, so please let me know if I should have communicated with you via the talk page for the Boô article instead of by going to your talk page. Thanks. --Eric 21:42, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Breadmaster?[edit]

Me again. I've never heard of bread lord, breadlord, breadmaster, or bread master, but then again I'm neither master nor lord of European farming history. It depends on what the role of the broodheer was, I guess. Bread lord sounds funny; does broodheer sound funny in Dutch? --Eric 16:31, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have noticed when you closed the above AfD, you did not remove the category template, "REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD". By deleting this when closing it pulls the discussion out of the category. I have deleted it from this discussion, but if you could review any other closures you have done recently and remove the tag from them it would be greatly appreicated. Thanks. --Gay Cdn (talk) (email) (Contr.) 14:16, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a fairly recent change. The official policy is at WP:AFDC. In regards to why it is categoried after closure, it should not be. I have been going through the listing in each of the categories CAT:AFD and removing the tag from pages that are closed and adding the approriate category code for those in the uncatagorised group.--Gay Cdn (talk) (email) (Contr.) 18:44, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey if you want to add something to the article, be my guest. I'm basically done with the main bits I can find on him. Still have to look up the obit later this week hopefully. Silken Windhound[edit]

Why do you think this needs a history merge rather than a simple redirect to finish the merge (the text is merged already right?) - Mgm|(talk) 08:21, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the article was originally written at Silken windhound, but was then copied and pasted to Silken Windhound. Blanking and placing a redirect at the original page would effectively hide the history of edits between, if I remember correctly, the article's creation on June 2 and June 6. Of course, we have to follow the GFDL license, attribute sources, yadda, yadda, yadda. Anyway, Rich Farmbrough's already gotten to it, and everything should be all right now. With literally no break at all, permanently blocked user Eatonsh aka Continueddonations is back, this time exclusively focusing on the main Schizophrenia and the Talk:Schizophrenia page. That they all are the same user is obvious if you look at his writing style, interpunction, topics, timing, appearance, mode of reasoning, etc. that IMHO it does not need any further proof. However, I am not sure how to deal with it any further; I admit I am somehow involved in this by now (he has called me a Nazi perhaps once too often by now), and reverting him all the time is a drag and looks, in spite of my explanations, odd to some other users on the page in question, some of which are helping him. Thus, I am herewith asking some of the users, admins and ArbCom members who were involved in this case previously to check and to either suggest what to do or to initiate some remedial course of action. Many thanks in advance. Ebbinghaus 23:33, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: Interested?[edit]

Hi Mgm-

You told me you're new and I saw you did mostly small edits. Can I interest you in written an article? It doesn't have to be long, but I'd like to see at least a non-stub on various subjects and I can't write them all myself. If you do, there's a Barnstar in it for you. If you like the idea, I'd like to hear what your interests are, so I can suggest some much-needed articles. I know a full article can be daunting, but I'd be happy to offer support along the way. It's a great way to learn those little tricks of the trade. See ya later! - Mgm

In principle I'm interested, but I might not have time for a while to get to it. Chances are I will be less busy in the winter. Some of my interests are: mapping (GIS), languages/translation (French, German), medieval European history, Romanesque architecture, strong cheese, and good beer.
I have a couple questions I can't find answers to in Help; hope you don't mind me bugging you with them:
Do you know of a shortcut to add a link to one's own Talk page on one's signature, the way I've seen you and others do?
Is there a preferred format for quoting a post from one's Talk page (italics above) when one wants to include it in a reply on the poster's Talk page?
Thanks! --Eric 21:49, 17 September 2006 (UTC) | →Talk[reply]
You need to put [[User talk:EHM02667|talk]] in the box in your preferences (along with what else you want to display - like your regular userpage) and check 'raw signatures'. The date doesn't need to be included. What I typed above is the shortest way to type your talk page link.
I couldn't get that to work on my preferences page. Are you saying that you arranged your preferences such that when you type ~~~~, it generates your signature with the talk page link included?--Eric 19:01, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I finally grasped the signature customization, with add'l help from Wikipedia:Customisation. Also started messing with a couple articles. Thanks again. -Eric (talk) 17:40, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

E-mail addresses as usernames[edit]

In response to your message (quoted below) on my talk page:

You posted to User talk:[email protected] saying email addresses weren't allowed per policy and blocked them while simply recommending a name change to User talk:[email protected]. Why did you send different messages? Also, I know email adresses are discouraged, but I have yet to find the policy that forbids them (if they wanna be spammed, who are we to stop them?) Please point me to the policy you referred to here. - Mgm|(talk) 12:54, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

The policy on Usernames is at WP:Username. On that page, there is a section on inappropriate usernames.

E-mail addresses: Using your e-mail address as your username is not a good idea. Wikipedia content is extensively copied and the site itself is one of the most visited sites in the world. Any edit you make on Wikipedia will have your username attached to it, and using your email address will make you a tempting target for spammers. Additionally, usernames containing "[email protected]", etc. are blocked on sight, as such a name may misleadingly imply that a user is a member of the Wikimedia Foundation. There is no official policy regarding whether to block non-"wikipedia" email addresses, so it is left to the discretion of the blocking admin. Note to new user patrollers: you may use the template {{WelcomeEmail}} to recommend a username change to such users, or {{UsernameBlockedEmail}} to inform them of a block.

(Underlining is my emphasis.) The "message" to User talk:[email protected] was from the template {{UsernameBlockedEmail}}, while the "message" to User talk:[email protected] was from the template {{WelcomeEmail}}. I did not make any changes to the template messages. So, the template is misleading and perhaps should be changed (not use the word "policy").

I see a few issues with e-mail addresses:

  1. With out verification, it is possible for a person to register another's e-mail address as their username. I've seen some admins block with a message to send them verification of their e-mail address.
  2. Spamming.
  3. Use of company e-mail addresses. (This is the case of gasarica.com ). There is the possible implication that the user is representing their company; and/or the potential for their company to receive spam into their system as a result of the user registering a e-mail address from their company.

As per the WP:Username page, it is left up to the admin to make a decision on whether to block. I've seen admins revert (completely delete the user talk page ) my use of the {{WelcomeEmail}}, noting in the deletion summary that my message left a record that would open the user to spam.

How do you usually handle e-mail address usernames? — ERcheck (talk) 20:37, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ISBN[edit]

(Nice to see Dragon's Flight box spreading!) Essentially it didn't know about 13 digit ISBNs at that time, although I have since scanned for them to remove incorrect labels - why Sam Stern got missed I have no idea. There is a 10 digit ISBN listed here (and in the URL now I look), and arguably that is the correct one to use until midnight 31st Dec. ISBNs should be laid out, according to the International ISBN Agency, with spaces or hyphens separating the components. Spaces break wiki-magic, so the hyphens are the best solution. Rgds, Rich Farmbrough, 22:26 19 September 2006 (GMT).

That's a suprise. Let me know if you find that page agian. A solid block of numbers is only "allowed" for internal IT storage. Rich Farmbrough, 10:32 20 September 2006 (GMT).

Can you point me to some edits he did after his final warning (especially tag removals). With his edit history empty I can't check without knowing what the articles are called. - Mgm|(talk) 11:28, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He created a total of five attack articles, beginning with the one warned on his talk page, then after his final warning created four other identical copies of it at various titles (including as templates designed to imitate db-attack (Template:db - attack). All of these have since been deleted at attack articles. As you observe he does seem to have stopped now, but at the time of report the vandalism was ongoing. ~Matticus TC 11:33, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright Judo[edit]

The simplest approach to people copying and pasting corporate promotional blurbs into articles is Copyright Judo. Miles Consulting Corp was a case in point. It was a word-for-word copy, except with the first person changed to the third person, of the company's own blurb, which is labelled "© 2004-2005 Miles Consulting Corp", and thus clearly a violation of our copyright policy. September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!

Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!

Well, I'd say quite many people dream of going to the North Pole, not to mention every other EU citizen probably wants to run his or her own restaurant, so even this combination of wishes is not that unusual. I'd say it is pretty amazing to hear of a celebrity chef NOT running his own restaurant, but being regarded a celebrity chef (or even just a chef!) at the age of 15 still is unusual! Active learning copyvio issue[edit]

I took a quick look at User:Wikilibrarian's contributions, and saw at least one other article, Case study, that was based on one of the documents from that site. however, looking at that one, it does say in the footer of the page, at http://www.ericdigests.org/1992-5/study.htm , that "This site exists to provide the text of the public domain ERIC Documents previously produced by ERIC." But the site that was indicated by the editor who pointed out the Active learning issue had a distinct copyright mark at the bottom. I'm all confused ow. I think I'll look this over more when I'm home from work. Tony Fox (arf!) 21:50, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't know I needed to spell it out. IMHO, it could even be speedied, as it doesn't really assert any true notability, using references to people and other subjects which have a very low search engine hit count -- which takes all of two seconds to perform. Never mind the line about being 'a poor black child being mistaken for a pile of poo'... . I've never had anyone else complain, but I'll try to document a little more... a hard thing to do effectively while wiki-ing at work (yes, I am mildly addicted). - CobaltBlueTony 01:21, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CSD catch on Image:Quintote colony counter.jpg[edit]

Thanks for catching the apparent issue with Image:Quintote colony counter.jpg. I found several interesting pictures on this site and uploaded several of them; I'll make sure to go back and provide the specific URLs for the ones I uploaded. FYI, the image in question is at http://visualsonline.cancer.gov/details.cfm?imageid=2044. Also, if it helps, the public domain licensing isn't merely implicit by being part of a US Government agency; these images are explicitly licensed to the public domain here: http://visualsonline.cancer.gov/about.cfm

Now I see what happened, and realize that the image captioned a scintillation counter on visualsonline.cancer.gov is, according to Deglr6328, not what it says it is. I don't know any better, so I'll take Deglr6328 at his/her word. Thanks for your help. I'll go ahead and delete the image. I'm now much less confused. :-) - Quintote 02:39, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Mgm Okito poster 1910.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Mgm Okito poster 1910.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Note on Talk Page[edit]

And I know you're a respectable enough admin that a clumsy veiled threat like "I've seen enough useful contributions from you to know that losing you would be a shame for the project" is beneath you.

The subject of the AFD IS a bog-standard working artist, period/full stop. If you want to read something into that on behalf of someone else, I can't stop you ("My God, that barbarian called him average") but don't tell me what I meant, because as the one saying, I'm probably in the best position to know.

And as for the sockpuppet I told to "put a cork in it"...well, that was about a mild rebuke as he or she deserved. Take a read of his or her ranting and active personal insults both on the multiple AFDs and on the Admin page. --Calton | Talk 12:48, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tecmobowl: Sockpuppet[edit]

Just look at Tecmobowl (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and his contributions. He has targeted baseball related articles, something CFIF (talk · contribs) has had a run in with TBTA (talk · contribs) who was the unwitting victim of the Spotteddogsdotorg (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) sockpuppet ring thanks to Scott Brown from tvnewstalk.net. TBTA feels he was driven off Wikipedia by Tecmobowl and communicated his suspicion that the user may be part of the sock ring.

Tecmobowl's ëdit styles, types of edits reflect the those of the sock ring, as his reaction to being accused, including denials and anon ip attacks. What has changed is that he did not target CFIF directly with this latest sock, leading me to think that this is most likely a new form of attack from this problematic vandal taking the time to make seemingly good edits, along with many questionable ones, such as claiming links are spam when they are not. I feel that the overt avoiding of CFIF is a move to throw off suspicion, as is his avoiding AFDs. However, the other activities by Tecmobowl, especially the choice of who he attacked and the anon attacks seem to be typical of the Scott Brown/Spotteddogsdotorg sock ring.

why does my article not appear[edit]

I have been trying to find my article in Wikipedia for four days. I assume when I click on 'save' it is then submitted. When I check the article after signing in, the article displays, but it is not (yet) available on the main Wikipedia site. Why not...what am I doing wrong.

Clerk[edit]

As clerk for the extraordinary case which for obscure reasons bears my name, I woud be grateful if you could follow through on this edit here [1]. I am anxious that it does not become lost in the volumes of edits there. I would like Fred's comment removed and deleted without fuss. Thankyou. Giano 09:12, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, For better or worse, I've already made a judgement call and actioned Giano's request. If Fred feels I've miscalled, he can revert or take extra action as he sees fit. Regards, Ben Aveling 11:29, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

EffK[edit]

Hallo MacGyver, thanks for your message. I think User:Splash has alredy taken care of EffK's talk page. The only thing that remains (but is hardly bothering me) is one posting on his user page, where another editor paints EffK as an innocent victim. But, as I said, this is hardly bothering me.
