Information icon Hello, Chigwell School Archives. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. JBW (talk) 08:58, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You have continued to edit contrary to the conflict of interest guideline, after having received the information above about it. Also, Wikipedia policy is that a user account is for a single person acting in an individual capacity, and must not represent an organisation. Therefore you should not continue to edit using your current username. However, a username such as "J Smith at Chigwell School" would be acceptable, and would have the advantage of providing transparency about your connection to the school as well as indicating that the account is an individual one. If you want further information you may likecto read the policy on usernames. JBW (talk) 09:44, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • I see that you have now had your account renamed, to comply with the username policy. Thank you for doing that. However, you still need to comply with the guideline on conflict of interest and the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use relating to paid editing; please check what the requirements are, and make sure you follow them.
  • On a completely different matter, everything I have seen appears to indicate that the school you work for was for most of its history known as "Chigwell Grammar School", and that the shorter name, without "Grammar", is a recent innovation. If that is so then it is an anachronism to use that form of the name in reference to earlier times. If I am mistaken in forming that impression then please let me know. Good afternoon,
Thank you very much for clarifying. Could you advise where may be best to place a COI acknowledgement, to satisfy the guideline requirements? Happy for it to be listed on my user page with more context, for instance, but I don't think the below announcement quite fits with the purpose of my edits, so may reconsider my contributions if it were to appear on the page itself. I am the Archivist at Chigwell School, and would like to add some information to some of our alumni's Wikipedia pages from my research (all cited, of course). I am not paid, nor have I been instructed, to contribute to Wikipedia, but am simply keen for other readers and researchers to have a fuller history for these individuals!
