Notability of Alexander Oliver

A tag has been placed on Alexander Oliver requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Editing

With regard to the children of the above. The way to name them is within a sentence not as a list. Also the source you gave at familysearch only led to a search page and not to any information about him. The familysearch link you have now added again only leads to a blank search page and nothing else. Sources should also be added "inline" within the article and not added in the references section. I have already explained above that familysearch does not work as a source, which in addition even if it did work is not a valid source. I have also explained that you should not keep removing the tags. I will though ask you once again to stop removing the tags. You are clearly editing out of good faith but wikipedia has very specific guidelines about editing and creating articles. Further to the above message, an aol members page is also not a valid third party reliable source. WP:CITE, WP:RS and WP:VER. In addition you keep removing "reflist" from the references section. It is there for good reason and should not be removed. The sources go inline within the article and then appear in the references section automatically. There is no huge rush to sort out these articles, I can't see any of them being deleted so as I have already suggested perhaps you would be best reading how to edit articles firstly and then edit them further. Wikipedia can be a strange old place, but once you get used to it it is easy to edit.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 03:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I deleted your article, Samuel S. Lewis (Texas), because there was no assertion of notability. Just being a soldier in the Texas Revolution is not enough to justify a stand-alone article about someone. I've been reading books on the Siege of Bexar and have not seen his name mentioned, so I don't think that Samuel S. Lewis is likely to meet the notability criteria. Alamo defenders

Hi Lordoliver, I think we may have had a miscommunication on the meaning of "redlink". A "redlink" means that wikilinks have been added to a term that does not have an article. I don't feel that most of these men are notable enough to have articles on their own, hence I didn't think there should be redlinks on their names (that is an invitation to create a new article about them). I see that you've just created articles for some of the lesser-known Alamo defenders. There really is not enough information for each of them to have an article - very little is known about most of them that is not already in the List of Alamo defenders. Would you be willing to discuss who should/should not have an article and redirect some of these that you have recently created to point to List of Alamo defenders? Perhaps there is additional information that we could include in the list that would satisfy your concerns?Karanacs (talk) 13:29, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Do you really think that we need to create articles for all of those people, though? There is very little information about them except that they fought and died at the Alamo. Would it be possible to add a column or two to the list to contain any other information you think needs to be stored about them? I really think the names of the people should, in most cases, redirect straight to the list. Karanacs (talk) 15:53, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
The only information in the article on Miles DeForrest Andross I see is about his family and a brief line on how he came to be in the Alamo. I don't really consider that notable information, although I wouldn't object to including a column in the list that has names of parents and perhaps another with the names of spouses. This information isn't available for all of the defenders, which is why I had not included it as potential columns in the beginning. I'm basically worried that these articles will never be more than stubs, and I don't think the vast majority of readers would search by these names. I think the readers would be served better by having a better list. Perhaps a notes column could be added that has a very brief bio? Karanacs (talk) 16:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
I do agree that anyone who is the namesake of a county deserves his own article. I was looking at the featured lists and think that this might be a good example to follow. DYK

Hi, I saw your DYK nomination, which referes to the article Uniforms of the Confederate Military. I can confirm "date, length and reference" if you could add a footnote to the book where this is written, inlc. the page(s). I can see the fact being stated in the article, but could you, please, add a direct footnote after that paragraph.

On a different note, as a non-specialist, it was quite currious to me to find that "The first of the Navy uniforms were made in Dark Blue, but with the Southern style of rank for the officers". Maybe you could somehow add this to your DYK proposal (keep it in reasonable length, though). Anyway, just a suggestion, feel free to ignore it.

Also, it would be good for more people to read throught the entire article, since if the DYK is accepted, the article would be directly linked to the main page, so you want it to be flowless.Dc76\talk 03:57, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, thanks a lot for dropping a note on my talk page. I made a couple of comments on your entry at Template talk:Did you know: one was over the wording of the hook, which I see you've addressed. The other Dc76 has mentioned above: the rules of DYK say that the hook should be directly referenced in the article with an inline citation. This just means that the sentence "This meant that many soldiers wore them even on the hot days, causing many Confederate soldiers to suffer from heatstrokes on long marches" needs a reference. If you can find this within the books you're working from, that's great; if not this link shows a snippet of text from a book about the Antietam Campaign which would do the trick at a pinch. BillC, I don't understand what is the problem with the webpage you found. Is the sourse "Historical Times (Illustrated) Encyclopedia of the Civil War" edited by Patricia L. Faust problematic (I am totally from outside the topic)? Or do you suspect that Lordoliver has worked out the text from this website rather than from the book. If so, there is a simple test: Lordoliver, could you please photo or scan the title page of the book and the page that says about the wool clothing. Lordoliver, I think what BillC whats from you is to further improve the article, to develop it. Look at the bright side: thousands of people will see your DYK and I bet there will be at least 1000 unique hits to the article within 2 days. Clearly, it is worth developing it more than what already can be found in a webpage abstract of the book. If I were in the US, I could get the book from the library and would help you myself, but unfortunately I can't get it here and now. I will try to help you reading the internet links from the article and maybe adding here and there a few words. So, don't get discouraged, if you stick to it, this will be done. Ideally, one would like something like British Army uniform, but we can go with less here. So, now you see the minimum (present state) and maximum (British Army). Sorry, I did not say quite that. As it is, at least half of the article's information is present on that website. We don't want to have copycats of various internet pages, don't we? And it is not a topic with scarce sources. Think of DYK as a by-product, not as an aim in itself. Sooner or later it will have a DYK link, don't worry. You see, I am not American, I know nothing about the subject. To give you a good answer about what you can do, I need first to know what is missing, what is presented uneven (with too much or too little stress). But I do not know that. You, also with the book in face of you, know! Ask also the fellow editor below, surely he or she can suggest something. It is not an exam. You find pleasure in writing articles, you are not fulfilling minimal requirements. It has to be something that a scholar would say "here is a clear and neat review covering all essential aspects". Is the source provided reliable? Per google books Its a literary travel guide that asks the reader to have a "sense of humor." (I am taking it out of context?) Some (limited) independent research did not provide any further verification of this hook. Can you either provide a secondary source or consider changing the hook? I left a note on the DYK page asking for a second opinion about this hook and good faith. It's a good article, and I'm sure it will meet the standards. I'd like to see what the experienced DYK'ers say. Also, I tried to clarify the currency to $US20,000. Thanks. Mitico (talk) 21:33, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Nice work so far but a copyedit at this stage is probably premature as the article is far short of GA standard. While it's copiously illustrated, the text needs expanding significantly. There is no shortage of specialist material on the subject:
