Suggested articles for education[edit]

We need articles on these topics:

  • Process vs. product in education
  • school size research
  • class size research
  • schools within schools movement.

Personal list of articles to which I hope to contribute[edit]

Very UK-oriented ... could at least add some US-oriented info ... see if ACTFL and the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning are in here. Especially add to section "Foreign language education and ability."

http://www.cal.org/resources/digest/0106pufahl.html

Articles to create[edit]

Include links and info for the various editions, who was involved, what it has meant, why it's important (be sure to explain that the U.S. does not have a national curriculum for constitutional reasons), "the five C's" expression.

Some links:

  • M. E. Kerr -- HOW can such a popular author with such a long career still not have an article? The pseudonym is probably a factor, and I wouldn't be shocked if the orientation issue figured in as well. Lawikitejana 04:52, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedians FROM Texas[edit]

VOTE to keep Category:Wikipedians from Texas from merging with Category:Wikipedians in Texas. Being FROM Texas is not necessarily the same as being IN Texas. --Renice 15:07, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note to anyone reading the message above and thinking of joining the vote: I checked out the vote page, and not only does the discussion so far all lean toward "keep," but messages there indicate that the actual nomination hasn't occurred. It would appear someone was only discussing the thought of nominating it, and Texas-oriented people being frequently quick to jump into discussions of "from Texas" vs. "in Texas," some jumped the gun. Lawikitejana 20:27, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Texas[edit]

I've been going through category by category in category:Wikipedians to standardize them. It requeires making a long list of changes, and sometimes I realize I have to go back and change them again. That's what happened this time. When the nomination actually gets posted, I hope it will make more sense.--Mike Selinker 16:45, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry just a little ignorant[edit]

I blanked it out my talk page habitually I like to always have a clean sate. I do the same thing with emails, text messages, etc...

I did not in anyway intend for it to be taken badly I fully read your message and took it into account. I also fully understand your point. I am sorry if I appeared rude or pretentious. I just was acting on habit.

I was unaware that doing such could be taken badly, and I also did not realize that it was considered bad etiquette. If I knew this, I would have never done it in the first place.

The idea that I would do such a thing knowing that it was a bad thing is asinine. I am for building community, not knowingly breaking it.

Finally, I would like to thank you for letting me know of this fact I simply was ignorant to this fact, and without you telling me, I may never have known.

Thank you please forgive my impertinence and I hope there are no hard feelings

Acentos y tildes[edit]

¡Hola, Lawikitejana!

A College[edit]

You recently helped me with the Dallas Christian College Page and it would appear that you work on College and University pages,

I am coming to you because I was not sure who else to ask for help from and it seemed something should be done, for all I know I could be wrong.

I recently ran accross the Article for Texas Baptist College and unaccreditted Baptist Bible Colleg in Longview, Texas.

I found it and it is under discussion to be deleted for having no notability.

It seems to me that being any college makes a scholl inherently notable. Students, controversy, location all make it significant at least abit right?

Essentially I just felt it odd that it would be trashed though it is a small school it seems that it could be important somehow to somebody and I thought that wikipedia was supposed to hold information about everything equally and unbiased.

I wikified the article a bit and addded some information and sources.

I mean some people may look for unbiased information about the college. Their site is of course biased and critical books are also biased.

I do not know frankly I do not even agree with the college but it seems odd to trash it.

the discussion page for the deletion of the article is Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Texas_Baptist_College

Any help you could give would be great.

Hi, there! I've responded at User talk:MJHankel and also indirectly at the Articles-for-deletion discussion listed in your message. Lawikitejana 09:30, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well thank you very much I just was not quite sure I did talk with the person who started the discussion and I started to understand his point, I do get the whole notability problem it just seemed as though there is no unbiased source for such a school.but I have come to accept that, as it is, I realy knew nothing of the school before and basically it does not much effect me either way... thank you again...--MJHankel 11:37, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

your excellent feedback on my 1a page[edit]

Thanks, Lawik—I've changed that word to "repeatedly", and when I return to build on that little project in December, I'll include mention why the additive thing (and the other ways of integrating ideas) are such burning issues on WP. I'd never thought of it in the way you expressed. Nice. Tony 00:22, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's actually happened is that the prod tag has been left up, but the things I mentioned in it have been deleted from the article! I'm not actually certain how to proceed now: had I come upon the article in its current state originally, then I'd have had little hesitation in nominating it for speedy deletion as "has played for many local sides in the slough area" is not really much of an assertion of notability! However, I'm not sure whether it's acceptable to take down an existing prod template and replace it by a CSD one. Loganberry (Talk) 04:06, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Told ya they were clever ... but he's still non-notable from all appearances. They claim he's "legendary," but offer no sources to back it up. I'd say that for now, we just leave it there, watch it, and wait for it to get deleted. Lawikitejana 04:20, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tabs[edit]

31 windows is far too many, opening tabs allows one to have 31 pages open in one window. IE7 now has tabs but I havent yet downloaded it. It took me ages to grasp what tabs were for but I have been addicted since I got the hang of it, allowing the opening of multiple pages at the same time and easily accessible in the same window. I guess to open the same page in a new tab/window is Ctrl L Ctrl C and then open the new window/tag and Ctrl V. I guess for people our age these things come slowly but surely, poco a poco, and fir me wikipedia was such an excellent training for the other computer skills I now grapple with in my work. Anyway, cheers for the message, SqueakBox 14:20, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carrie Neiman/Neiman Marcus[edit]

You might want to add, Carrie Neiman for years lived on her estate at 6735 Westlake, Dallas Texas. This house was bought in the early 60,s by the Dallas banker, William H. Cothrum. He had it rebuilt at that time. The Harvard College book of Stanley Marcus was in the attic of this house. The business interest of William Cothrum, went down hill in the 1980,s. and he took his life. This will not be shown in the offical version. As he was a close friend of Henry Wade, Dallas county District at that time. His wife and widow Maragret sold it in 1990. Another interesting feature of the Carrie Neiman house was that it was were, Bobby Ewing was run over by a car in the driveway. This was in the Dallas series. Also Lawrence Marcus was for years the manager of the Houston Neiman,s. It is also interesting to note, that Stanley was a lifetime Democrat. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Randall O (talkcontribs) 00:46, 13 November 2006

As you edited one word out of the Selena film article you made the comment that the original inclusion of that word was "silly."

That snide comment is hostile and uncalled for. Often edits are made on the fly without thinking of all the world-wide ramifications. You are right, "true" was not needed. But, do you have to shove it up the editor ass? Wikipedians generally edit in "good faith." I certainly do. And, intellectually, I'll go up against you any time. Silly my ass. A non-hostile edit would have been: not needed. Luigibob 03:31, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also see: Other True usages. And do Google: "Selena "true mexican". Surprise! Yet, it's true they are all so silly!
Still, I agree the word is redundant given the context on the WIki article. Luigibob 04:18, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note to self: For cheese article[edit]

Just parking this link here: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/022207dnmetcheese.14277fe.html#

"Officials at the meeting warned that cheese may soon eclipse marijuana as the drug kids are most often arrested for possessing on campus. ... So far this school year, 113 students have been arrested for possessing cheese, compared with about 130 arrested for marijuana, said DISD police Officer Jeremy Liebbe, who has been tracking cheese use since the drug first showed up in schools locally about two years ago. Last school year, 90 students were arrested with cheese, he said.

Since September 2005, about 200 criminal cases involving students caught with cheese have been filed, according to a district spokeswoman. The youngest student caught with the drug was an 11-year-old in elementary school.

... Parents and community leaders, concerned about a cheap and deadly drug that has invaded a cluster of northwest Dallas schools, demanded Wednesday that school and police officials take the problem more seriously.

Their meeting was prompted by the death of 15-year-old Oscar Gutierrez, a Marsh Middle School student who was found dead in bed Sunday morning at his apartment on Harvest Hill Road after a night of partying.

While toxicology tests won't be finished for weeks, his family told police he frequently used cheese – a mixture of black tar heroin and Tylenol PM – and overdosed on it a year ago.

Oscar's funeral was Wednesday. He is thought to be the fourth youth to die from the drug since spring of 2006. ..." Lawikitejana 22:07, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lawikitejana. Thanks for your comment on Cop 633's talk page, but I would also object to "deaf and mute"; it's too close to deaf-mute. The objection by deaf people to "deaf-mute" is more than just the assumption that deaf people are mute. Historically, "deaf-mute" has had connotations of stupidity. See Deaf-mute. Tim O' Hare[edit]

Thanks for the note. Unfortunately, there is no way I could write an article that would be NPOV about him. I have the distinct misfortune of living within 30 miles of that guy. If you could have seen how gleeful he was on the news, you would understand why I draw the Wallace comparison. The man is a racist and a bigot. Any article written by me about that man would contain my views of what a racist bastard the man is. The only parallel I can think of is Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door, defiantly spouting off about "Segregation now" and all that other BS. O'Hare did the same thing, as he was defiantly saying to the opponents of the racist measure, "Bring it on! All the way to the Supreme Court! Then, when we win, we'll sue you for our court costs." The man's a bigot. Anyways, thanks for the courtesy note. I do wish you had left my comment on O'Hare, though, as his bigotry needs to be exposed.K. Scott Bailey 02:34, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Like I said, I feel such utter contempt for the man, that I don't feel I could be in any way objective. I could perhaps contribute to research on such an article, but not to the construction of the actual article. As for Bud's commentary, I don't know if people would accept it, since it's an opinion piece. I think he's dead on in his critique though.K. Scott Bailey 16:16, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are free to edit the content of Ripped from the headlines during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. --Hnsampat 22:44, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re:IP address may need blocking again[edit]

I've blocked the school until September. Thanks for the report. My apologies for the delay in responding. alphachimp 23:30, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(1) A! Ok! The fact that I am not a native English speaker betrayed me here!
(2) What about a "fair use" not free-content photo? Have a look here to understand what I mean. If we do not have a free use image, this is the second best (accurately: less worse) choice.

In order to have an idea about how a great article can be created, why don't you have a look in some FA biographies? You could get some ideas.--Yannismarou 18:36, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You better believe it..[edit]

I am tired of your biased slant regarding the immigration measures in Farmers Branch, Texas. I can keep this up as long as you can and I will keep deleting it until you can type something with an objective viewpoint.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.39.80.105 (talkcontribs) 5 June 2007

The problem is that you refuse to recognize objective text if you don't care for it. As an example, the word "overwhelmingly" is redundant in a sentence that says it passed two to one. Anyone capable of doing the math can see that the measure passed handily. A non-objective statement would make an evaluative judgment such as "sadly," or "absurdly," and no one is doing that. We have written up the controversy as fairly as it can; it's POV editing and non-encyclopedic writing to report it as if it didn't stir up several months of debate. That debate is what made the whole thing notable to begin with.
Also, you may not have stopped to consider that an objective writeup of the controversy — such as the one you keep deleting — can serve to further the point that a sizable contingent of the community favors these measures, by showing how hard they fight to keep them. Most sources I've seen online that favor the measures spend various paragraphs talking about how desperate all these delaying tactics look. So let's just keep an objective reporting of that and let people draw their own conclusions. That's what Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy is all about. Lawikitejana 20:04, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect, it is impossible for you to write an objective viewpoint, when you have publicly called Tim O'Hare a racist and a bigot. You may as well characterize the city of Farmers Branch, Texas and all of America the same way. The word "threatening" is not an objective word. Also the original provisions did not call for cutting funding to youth--that was what once councilman suggested but was not in the original provision. Your commentary is overtly non-neutral. BTW, why don't you include that one of the lawsuits was dismissed by the federal judge? No of course not. We wouldn't want to include something like that would we. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.39.80.105 (talkcontribs) 5 June 2007

te esperamos[edit]

porqué no te acercas mas a es:Wikiproyecto:El_Salvador? te esperamos...EFegé:es:Usuario:Efegé, o es el idioma el problema? Translation: Why don't you get more involved with Wikiproject:El Salvador [Spanish Wikipedia]? We're waiting for you ... [signed] EFegé, or is the problem the language?

Part of it's the language, and part is cultural — it's hard to explain, but mine is an outsider viewpoint limited to what sources I find and am presented with on a given topic, whereas when working in English on topics that I've been learning about or surrounded by for half my life, I'm much more comfortable that I know what I'm doing.
Descriptive in Edit Summaries[edit]

Hi, could you be more descriptive in your edit summaries as to which movies you are increasing or decreasing? This could minimize confusion for people who are trying to improve the article. Thanks. Miranda 04:46, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I virtually always do detailed edit summaries, but I kept running into edit conflicts after doing a lot of work, so I started doing it the fast way. :) Regret any confusion. Lawikitejana 04:59, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I finished them. Yeah, edit conflicts can be bad, especially when people vandalize the page. Miranda 05:14, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is occurring because someone typed class=stub instead of class=Stub (the rating must be capitalized) and the template couldn't read it. Same goes for the importance rating and the subproject.. everything should be capitalized! Cheers! -- drumguy8800 C T 10:37, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My family moved to Tow when I was in middle school, and I lived there until I left for college. They owned a fishing lodge on Lake Buchanan, and I have many fond memories of growing up on the lake! Reba d 13:40, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
