Welcome and a note about copyright violations[edit]

Hi Lairbhan,

Thanks for your work on Wikipedia! Above you'll find a welcome message with a number of useful links to policies and standards for editing here. Of particular concern to me was your addition of some material to the Badb article which included a translation which was a copyright violation. [1] This appears to be from this site: [2]. The way in which you added it also made it appear to be sourced to Stokes, which the original six lines was attributed to. Proper sourcing of material added to articles is very important to Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or need help learning the ropes, please drop a line on my talk page. I haven't been as active on WP recently but I try to check in daily. Cheers, Pigman☿/talk 01:56, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry if I did not correctly attribute the source - I am still learning the proper way to do all of that. As for the material, it was not from the source you linked to nor did it violate any copyright. That excerpt is, as far as I am aware, a common domain piece, the version I used was taken from an Irish Texts Society translation of the Lebor Gabala Erenn by R.A.S. MacAlister, dated from 1941. However I was remiss in making it appear in anyway to be linked to Stokes. I have not been doing much on wikipedia, nor adding material recently, beyond very minor edits, because I do not feel confident with the format. Lairbhan (talk) 02:14, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The English version you added is a translation of a modern Irish (Gaelige) version of the original Old Irish. It is not MacAlister's version. While it may be disseminated around the Internet without proper credit and copyright notice, it is not in the public domain. Note that the copyright on the page I linked to above says: "Translation Copyright © 1993 John Kellnhauser May be reposted as long as the above attribution and copyright notice are retained." Also note that John Kellnhauser and Seán Ó Tuathail are the same person and that text is his modern Gaelige then translated into English. Cheers, Pigman☿/talk 19:47, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies. The source I had it from was in error in attributing it and I am sorry I perpetuated that error. Lairbhan (talk) 03:36, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
