Cleanup?
I just noticed you made an edit to Ralph Merkle with the edit comment: "m (clean up using AWB)". But all you had done was to remove an empty line before the category listing in the end of the article. There is no need to remove such double lines in the end of articles, it makes no visual change in the article. Those double lines actually make it easier for editors to keep the article text and the category and interwiki links in the end of the article apart. And making meaningless edits like that just wastes the time of other editors who watches those articles. Since when we see that an edit has occurred we go there to check what has been done. (And it wastes database space too, but that is less important since Wikipedia has no lack of disk space.)

Hi, it looks like every porn actress with a stub tag is being listed for deletion. I noticed that you put the notice of one to the project porn's deletion watch list, there might be more to add. Hello, As you may or may not know, Alexandria, Egypt was selected to host Wikimania 2008 [1]. I haven't had the pleasure of knowing who you are before, but I believe the below comment may be pertinent:
Comment. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to believe any of the claims made by Robert Young. In a comment above made from an IP address, Young says "there's a big difference between 'rat catcher for the local council' and in charge of the world's oldest people for the entire planet". If someone who claims to be a researcher thinks that they are "in charge of the world's oldest people for the entire planet", I have to seriously question whether anything they write can be trusted. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:15, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
It seems that the more evidence I present, the more user BHG resorts to negative attacks such as the one above. Pick up a 2007 or 2008 Guinness Book, hardcover. I'm on page 2. Yet the response has been uniformly unfair, negative remarks such as that above.Ryoung122 12:03, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- I don't particularly care to get in the middle of this dispute, however, I do see that you have over 7,000 edits on the English Wikipedia. I'm not sure what space of time that you made those edits in, but I would assume that you've been editing for awhile. In that time, I'm surprised that you haven't come up against something like this before, as there is a pretty strong push against anything that even looks like a conflict of interest. Provided, I think a lot of that is unfair and unnecessary, there's not much that one person can do to push back too much against what often amounts to a mob :mentality. However, WP:COI does exist for a reason, and I recognize that, though I think some people let the policy (and other policies) rule over :common sense sometimes.
- I am also surprised that in the time that you've been here, you haven't been socialized properly in the use of talk pages and non-mainspace discussion pages. While this isn't nearly as big of a problem as BrownHairedGirl seems to be making it out to be (I recognize that it's an honest mistake), I do strongly suggest that you avoid breaking up people's comments and discuss things in a threaded format in the future. If you find it necessary to respond to specific statements or questions, copy and paste them into your reply and offset them using bold and/or italic text, indentions, or whatever you like, and then respond to them that way. I see that you have been directed to pertinent policy pages about discussion page etiquette, so I won't bother with that. Just give them a skim if you haven't already.
- Also to the point of discussion etiquette, as I'm sure you've noticed by now, you've got to be really careful about the way you word things lest someone twist them around on you. Of course you can always go back and say, "you've twisted my words; that's not at all what I meant," but that usually degenerates into pointless squabbling and is completely counterproductive. It also seems that you keep swapping back and forth between editing while logged in and while not logged in. Again, while this can be a more than honest mistake, it could be viewed as sockpuppetry, which is generally discouraged. For this, I would suggest either double-checking that you are logged in before posting, or getting into the habit of previewing before you post so that you can see that you forgot to log in. Or, worst-case, if you still post as an IP when you thought you were logged in, just log in, go back, and correct the signature. It happens to the best of us. :)
- I also suggest that you look over WP:AUTO if you haven't already. I gave the page a skim before !voting (that's "not-voting," if you're not familiar -- a Wikipediaism that is used to describe weighing in on a discussion for lack of a better word, because AfD and the like are not a vote) on your AfD, and while it seems that you have bumped up against the policy a bit in creating and editing the article, it also seems that you did it in good faith, and you've managed to remain amazingly neutral and objective in the content. WP:BLP is also kind of pertinent to the deletion discussion, because as you are living, there's a higher standard for inclusion of pretty much any statement in an article about you, in that everything pretty much has to be sourced, no exceptions, no tolerance for anything else. Well, that's how it's carried out, anyway, even if it's obvious that the subject of the article edited in line with the WP:AUTO policy as to completely factual statements. Unfortunately, this makes keeping a BLP at AfD very difficult if every single thing isn't backed up with impeccable sources. It's unfortunate, as it results in the deletion of a lot of perfectly good information, but it's also kind of necessary from a legal standpoint, as Wikipedia has an interest in covering it's own ass, which is quite understandable.
- With all that said (I'm really long-winded, sorry), it's more than likely that the article about you will be deleted. I'm really sorry about that. It seems to me that it would be worth keeping as you have made some significant contributions to your field. However, before it's deleted, you can always userfy the content, that is, move it to your userspace, either as a subpage or a part of your user page since it is about you. (There are very few rules about userspace content, and moving the content of the article to your user page shouldn't be objectionable since it is about you, which is usually what user pages are used for.) If you need any help with that, I'll be happy to give you a hand. I really hope that even after this negative experience that you'll continue contributing, as it seems to me that you have a very specific field of expertise -- something that is always useful around here. You appear to have made many significant and helpful contributions in your area on Wikipedia, and having your article deleted shouldn't discourage you from continuing with your educational mission or make you believe that it has failed.
- LaMenta, First I'd like to mention that, ironically, I live near GA Tech. Though I've never met you, let me know if you'd like to meet in person (perhaps a coffee shop). Now, it may LOOK like that losing the 'non-vote' on the AFD page is a loss, I won't see it that way. If someone else decides to re-start my article at a later date, it wouldn't start with the almost-insurmountable problem of WP:AUTO. The page there suggested that it is not 'set in stone' but apparently, it is. The irony is that, even for those 'voting' against me, many have now learned who I am, so in a way they have 'lost'. I'm only 33 and at the start of my career. That I'm already cited in thousands of publications must be irritating to some nay-sayers who were certain I was a nobody. One can only imagine how this will look if things go according to plan (healthwise, careerwise) in 20 years, forty years. I already have some 'knockout' offers within the next year that, if they come to fruition, would make another incarnation of my article unassailable. So, it's like a baseball game...if the other team scored 11 runs and you scored 9, well it's still one game. It's a 'loss' but you can come back the next day and start over. Which I will do.

- I'm certainly glad that you won't view the deletion of your article as a loss. And you are quite correct in pointing out that it will likely be recreated at some point. If it makes you feel any better, you're not the only person who is notable in a niche area that has had to fight tooth and nail to defend their notability when more "mainstream" figures that are arguably less notable are left alone. I have an acquaintance who is a cryptographer, and she and her father, along with a few other people, cracked one of the world's most famous unsolved codes a couple of years back. Her father was also the co-author of a paper that NASA used to put its first geo-synchronous satellites in orbit. So far, she and some other reasonable editors have managed to defend the article about her from deletion, but it is still a bit of a hot-button deletion topic that people like to try and pull up every so often. The article on her father was eventually deleted because there was no immediate way to prove that he had worked on the research team that published the paper on geo-synchronous orbit and actually made it happen, because when the paper records were archived online, only the names of project leads and the names of the first author listed on the papers got entered. It's a shortcoming of Wikipedia, certainly, but more specifically it's a shortcoming of the AfD process, as more and more people are forgetting such important tenets such as WP:DEADLINE (there is no deadline) and WP:IAR (ignore all rules), as well as guidelines of lesser importance such as WP:PROBLEM, which is one of my favorites lately.
- I will warn you that nominating a lot of questionably notable biographical entries in the wake of the deletion of your article might come off as a little point-y, so tread lightly in that regard.

- 74.244.11.122 added this, which was removed. It was then re-added by 70.46.67.98 here which was removed and re-added again by Legacy7 here. All accounts became active within a couple days of eachother, and all edits on all 3 are to related subjects and all 3 accounts have made the exact same edit. Cultural bias and WP:BIO
Thanks for the note, LaMenta. It's my position that the guideline, if "treated with common sense and the occasional exception"-- as stated in the guideline-- would not be biased... The problem comes when editors follow the letter of the rules-- whatever they happen to say this week-- in order to delete articles from a wide diversity of areas, cultures, etc... What can be done? - Here's a humorous (I think) example of non-English bias... I was recently tagged as a Vandal for wishing people "Happy New Year" in Korean & Japanese! (The tagger did apologize later.) I agree with what you say, but still not sure how we go about setting up rules which accomodate all language/cultures relatively equally for the literal-minded deletionist... On this specific Japanese example, I know that actresses just like the ones that are currently up for deletion appear in media all over the country. I also know that the Japanese, understandably, don't go out of their way to share this aspect of their culture with the non-Japanese. The Pink film which made up, at times in the 1960s and 1970s, up to 70% of the domestic film output, is only now getting some English-language coverage... I would think giving an eye to Japanese Wiki, and seeing what their own editors decide upon would give us some clue. But then I've seen editors here shout down any hint of letting "them" tell "us" what to include in "our" encyclopedia. What to do? I don't know... Dekkappai (talk) 22:43, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

- The article was linked to another that was up for deletion both in the literal sense and in the sense that it was created by the same contributor as the one who had created the article about her husband, both in a short time span. Judging by the WP:BIO requirements for authors as I understood them and also due to the lack of sources regarding the books themselves (aside from blurb mentions in a regular NYT feature), combined with the questionable nature of some of the article creator's other contributions and his abusive attitude at AfD, the article raised a lot of red flags for me. (The latter problem I didn't want to mention as it has nothing to do with the article's merit itself, but it made me question its reliability, if that makes sense.) I didn't mean to be so obstinate about the deletion about the article, but no one was really doing anything to help bring those red flags down much, particularly the article's creator and main contributor, who wasn't particularly constructive in his comments, instead making ad hominem attacks, which is generally another red flag in deletion discussions about articles of questionable notability. One editor was rather constructive, which I acknowledged, and I actively continued looking for more information myself every time I checked up on the AFD. If you read my comments throughout the discussion, which I hope you did as the closing admin, you know that I generally consider myself an inclusionist, sometimes to a fault, but occasionally less-than-apparent issues arise where I will question an article and its adherence to Wikipedia's guidelines, hence my bringing it to AfD. AfD question: Recombinant text
I have very little experience in AfD matters, and am asking for your input before nominating an article for deletion, because, quite frankly, I do not want to be seen as someone who capriciously nominates articles which do not meet AfD standards.
If you have time, please take a look at this article. It was created by the person who—as the intro asserts—is the very person who coined the term. Most of the edits are by that person. Most, if not all, of the sources link back to this person. I mean, at best it appears to me to constitute OR, at worst, self-promotion. But maybe I'm seeing it wrong. What do you think?
I selected you and many other editors pretty much completely at random; I picked one day's AfD archives, and clicked on the talk pages of the first two or three dozen editors' talk pages I came across. I hope that in using this selection method, I will get editors who are well-versed in AfD policies, yet who also represent a good cross-section of AfD philosophies. Hair Care article
I noticed on the Hair Care article you mentioned you had copied it to your Sandbox and were working on re-vamping the page. I was wondering how you were coming along with this, or if you had already posted your changes, as your comment was quite a while ago. I have practically no experience doing Wiki edits but I would definitely like to edit the article for structure, accurate content (to the best of my knowledge) and style. The article rambles quite a bit, and seems to devote unnecessary effort to discussing or reminding the reader of definitions and facts (such as hair structure) already in the Hair article. It presents strange statements that to me seem not only uninformed but factually inaccurate (such as that hair looks greasy because you sweat and then don't wash the sweat out).

Hey, I've had to overturn this AfD closure due to the fact that there were many delete votes still. In order for an AfD to close due to withdrawl, there must be no delete/transwiki votes. This is because even though the nominator changes their decision, other people still think it should be deleted, which is basically another AfD. I hope you don't take this the wrong way. Thanks! Speedy deletion of Image:Isooctanol.jpg
A tag has been placed on Image:Isooctanol.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is a redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.
