Wikipedia:Deletion review/2001: A Space Odyssey (film synopsis)[edit]

The End[edit]

You wrote:

  • For disclosure, note that I called for this article's deletion in the original debate. Based on my reading of Mr, Palpatine's comments above, I see no actual refutation of the arguments, but instead a fundamental misunderstanding of those original arguments. On the issue of sources, the author seems to have, rather than summarising the interprations of others, he's taken those as a basis for his own interpration of the film. He does not seem to understand the "no original research" and neutral point of view policies, nor the way consesus forming discussion works on Wikipedia. Personally, I thought his analysis was interesting and unique, and really, deserves to be published somewhere. However, that somewhere is simply not Wikipedia. This article was redundant and in violation of core policies, it should not be restored. I believe that Mr. Palpatine could be a valued contributor to Wikipedia, but he still has much to learn.--SB | T 02:22, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh. So, this is the end – too bad.

I just want you to know; just as the powers that be haven't changed their minds, neither have I. I still insist that this is a wrong decision. I branched the synopsis article from the main film article in an act of good faith. This was the work of many and not any single individual. This user thinks 2001: A Space Odyssey is the best science fiction film ever made; and a 196-word synopsis just does not do the film justice. -- Jason Palpatine 12:29, 15 June 2006 (UTC) speak your mind[reply]

Hi, Sean. I saw FloNight's message on your page, and discovered something I hadn't known before. I don't know what made you take that decision, and I'm saddened that you've taken it; but I don't ask to know. I'm sure the last thing you need right now is to be flooded with questions and comments. I hope you stay with us, and if you want your sysop powers restored at some stage, you know you'll have my support. I'm giving you a barnstar which I should have given you months ago for all the help you've given to other Wikipedians. I can recall occasions when I'd go to help someone, and would find that you had beaten me to it! "Random" isn't the right word here, because your "acts of kindness" weren't "random"; but that barnstar is the closest available one to what I want to say. Cheers. Hi. I appreciate what you were trying to do tidying up the Talk:Liverpool#Image discussion, by removing the comments by the banned user and the follow-up, but (a) you removed my comment relevant to the discussion, and (b) he's come along again and put it back, and now the comments are out of the order they were posted in. Maybe with something like that it's best just to leave things be! Thanks for trying anyway. --RFBailey 14:07, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: User talk: Pschemp[edit]

Thanks for your note. I am sorry if what I did offended you in any way; I have always been under the impression, however, that removing legitimate messages from your talk page was frowned upon. In fact, I have seen other editors get in trouble for doing just that.

The notes that Alienus left for Pschemp were critical, it is true, but were in no way vandalism, and thus I did not believe that they should have been deleted. We don't "own" our user or talk pages, and although it's true that we can do what we want with them (within reason), removing large portions of text just because you disagree with them does not reflect well on the editor who does so.

We all have messages on our talk pages that we don't like, but trying to hide them is not the way to deal with conflict. I could easily delete your message to me, in which you said that what I did was "very rude", but I accept that you disagree with my actions and I do not feel as though I have anything to hide, so I am going to leave it there. Please, consider that Wikipedia is set up in a transparent way, so that the changes that people make are all visible. I am only trying to go along with this. romarin [talk ] 21:07, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: [3], I'll suggest that you not be so ridiculous in the future.--SB | T 10:35, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not being ridiculous. "Orphaned non-free" isn't a criterion for speedy deletion, WP:CSD specifically says that we need to wait five days. There may, after all, be a chance that the image is useful in an article in which case it can be kept. Remember that images, once deleted, cannot be restored like articles can. Adding K-9 and Sarah Jane[edit]

You can find the explaination for adding SJ and K9 to companion list on the Tenth Doctor talk page71.254.4.208 04:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed your warning against User talk:24.22.51.229. Having looked through his edit history, I have noticed a pattern that reminds me of a person who goes by the alias KingRanger (note: for the purposes of this post, I will refer to User talk:24.22.51.229 as "he", and KingRanger only as "KingRanger" or "KR"). KingRanger is a fansubber known for his extremely caustic and nasty attitude towards anyone who does not unequivocally agree with him. Both User talk:24.22.51.229 and KR share the same targets: if you look at his edit history, you will see that he has gone after Japan Hero ([4]) and John Oppliger ([5] [6]), both of which KingRanger has a rather public hatred for. He has also spammed links to TV-Nihon ([7] [8] [9] [10]), the fansubbing group run by KR. He has done this while removing links to supersentai.com ([11] [12]) -- KingRanger once said "there is nothing good about that site" (on his forums, registration may be required). One edit he made was an insulta reference to someone known as "magenta" ([13]); there was onceis a TV-N member who went by "Magenta". When someone departs TV-Nihon, it is usually not on good terms (clarification: Magenta is still a TV-N member in good standing, according to their forums, so this edit just puzzles me). KingRanger also despises all Americanised versions of tokusatsu, and has a particular dislike for Power Rangers and Sentai to be mentioned anywhere near each other--note that he has removed Power Rangers references from Sentai articles ([14] [15] [16]), vandalised the Power Rangers article ([17]), vandalised Transformers: Cybertron (TV-N subtitles the anime it was based on) ([18]), and has changed links pointing to Voltron to GoLion ([19]). KR also has a rather emphatic dislike for a rumourmonger known as "dukemon"--one edit here shows a similar sentiment to the same person ([20]). jgp (T|C) 02:53, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why am I mentioning this? So you can be on guard about his motives. I do not have absolute proof he is KingRanger, and I do not have enough evidence to actually accuse him of being KingRanger, so I am not saying for sure that he is KingRanger. It could be a massive, if unlikely coincidence. It could be one of his supporters. I am not certain. I'm just suggesting that most of his edits follow a particular pattern, and it's one that I recognise. jgp (T|C) 02:53, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just some links illustrating KingRanger's attitudes in the past (except the first one, they are from the TV-N forums...registration might be required to view them): [21] (note: KingRanger was using the handle DekaMaster at the time) [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] jgp (T|C) 03:11, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I made that sources post before I saw your reply on my talk page. I was not aware that you knew of KR. jgp (T|C) 03:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, after User talk:24.22.51.229 vandalised this page, I noticed that almost all of the sources from TV-N's forums I posted above have been deleted from their forums. Interesting. jgp (T|C) 04:46, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just a little clarification (I edited this in above, but I'm posting it down below where it's more visible)--from reading the TV-Nihon forums, it is apparent that "Magenta" is still an active member in good standing, so I'm not considering that edit an insult towards that person anymore. But I will maintain that mentioning the name of another TV-Nihon member is further evidence that User:24.22.51.229 has some kind of connection with TV-Nihon. jgp (T|C) 05:45, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ian Levine Page[edit]

Dear Sean,

You have rolled back the page about Ian Levine that I edited yesterday under his instruction, firstly he did not like the photo you used so he supplied me with another one for the page, also I corected his birth year to 1954 and then added an other section of 'Other Information' containing up to date facts on various projects and then made a few other correcttions. He was very happy with this (you can contact him yourself at: Ian Levine [[email protected]] and he will confirm this.

This morning however he is having a fit because the page has been reverted by you. Can you please undo this so that the page is the same as the one I completed yesterday?

Many Thanks

Simon

You'll find that the people here do not care about actual facts. Please check the super sentai wikipedia page for information on that. They also refuse to accept real namings of the shows.

Dear Sean,

I am a little confused, you have created a page about Ian Levine which he has now seen and wishes to add some extra information and facts to make it more concise and accurate, to improve on the photo and other stuff, I added this and you immediately deleted it. I then sent a polite request asking that you not do this and you have replied by saying that people here are not interested in the facts? I would have thought that the facts are the most important thing.

I am simply trying to improve on your page by adding content that is supplied by the person thatthe page is about, are you saying that if I add this content you will keep removing it?

Surely the point of Wikipedia is to grow and add more facts and up to date concise information and not to censor them when somebody involved does this?

I would be grateful if you would please allow us to add this information and not to remove it - Many Thanks.

Best Regards

Simon

What Redundancy ?[edit]

More than once you have deleted the Characters section of Shinesman, claiming that it was redundant with the plot section. This is NOT so.The only characters mentioned there are Sakaki and Sekito and the five Shinesmen (Code names only).I see no redudancy whatsoever, since Kayashibara,Hitomi and Shiina were not mentioned in the plot overview, and the mentioned characters had no information. - R.G. 14:53, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, your revision does not include every character.Do you have a problem with including all the characters in the show? - R.G. 03:21, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't my fault that the characters have little in the way of personal details, but that is no reason for deleting the character section,I'm afraid. Why not modify the plot overview instead? - R.G. 04:49, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's precisely what I did.--SB | T 04:51, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That was not much of a compromise,I'm sorry to say.Why don't you want a character section in there? R.G. 03:29, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All right, what exactly do you want in a character list? Otherwise I'm inclined to believe that you just want to delete whatever I do there for no good reason whatsoever. If this is so,I may have to report you to Wikipedia. - R.G. 02:54, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In reference to your edit [29]. My edit was explained in the prior edit history. MoS:DP is a guideline for disambig pages and from that it is recommended that dab pages only include pages that users would reasonably expect to see when entering the term - neither of the two articles i removed include "AFD" in the article, nor do internet searches with both terms return results.

Please revert your revert, thanks/wangi 01:05, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your revisions for the entry Sh15uya.[edit]

Err...Pardon me, sir, but I feel that you may have been a bit quick on the draw there, removing some of those sections.

I've just begun the re-editing of that entry, and my editing style involves laying groundwork and gradually filling each section in over a period. (A good example may be The King of Braves GaoGaiGar and its sub-topics.) Granted, my editing style may not be what you're used to, but...Removing those new sections ten minutes after I've placed them seems a bit much...?

This is a tad bewildering to me. Please explain.

(I'm also confused by your removal of the cast history, in particular; do you plan to recreate that data on individual actor pages in the future? Please clarify.)

Thank you. --E. Megas 02:07, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you are in the middle of performing an edit, please note that, otherwise I have no way of knowing. When I see empty section headers, I remove them. I wouldn't do so it was indicated that the article was being edited, but it wasn't.
As for the second point, Wikipedia articles should not be repositories for tangentially related information simply because articles where they would be more appropriate do not yet exist. Save them in a text file so they may be added when the article is written, but keeping them in articles where they are uninformative and trivial is not productive.
Thirdly, if you tend to take a long period of time to perform your edits, I suggest that you do so in an external editor beforehand and then move them back into Wikipedia; I do this myself when writing new articles (I use TextEdit, for the record.).--SB | T 02:18, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
'Kay.
I'll take a.) under advisement in the future;
b.) would be viable if it was my place to do so (I know virtually nothing of modern Tokusatsu actors so I'll admit that it isn't exactly my department--My concern is for the people who will need this data, come by and see that it isn't there. Locking that away on a non-public device won't help matters in that case, particularly if I'm not there to see the request in that period);
c.) certainly holds merit for most people (and I've tried it a few times) but it just isn't conducive to the incremental way that I edit. I tend to fill in only what I can fill in and am often forced to leave gaps open for either me or someone else to fill in later--it's very difficult for me to write a large section "from scratch" and in one sitting for a Wiki environment, and that difficulty only increases with the scale and scope of the entry. (In the instances where I've copied-and-pasted into a Wiki from onsite data, someone's already filled in the section of the entry anyway by the time I've finished--in greater depth and higher quality.)
(Yes, this means I'm a slow writer and thus a potential liability to the site; you don't have to remind me.) --E. Megas 03:03, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
