• However, please note that 'notability' is used very often on VfD as a reason for nominating or voting, so that cannot really be held against GRider. I believe it is a de facto criterion even if it's not strictly written in policy (and if I were to put on my lawyer hat, I could make a reasonable case for it by quoting policy).     • Thanks. You take it correctly. If anything, my views are somewhat more extreme (I'll strive for NPOV): The whole issue of notability is new to me: In fact, the whole Vote for Deletion process is something I only discovered when GRider nominated a page I was working on (and in a way which, to me, smacked of discrimination against people practicing body modification). However, as I have mentioned, that is not the subject of the RfC. I do agree with your reasons for posting it. I'm still looking for the best way to express them myself. However, count me in in acknowledging that there is a problem with GRider's behaviour.

Funny, I was also thinking about a rambot-style census bot for South Africa. I'll see what I can find out about getting hold of programmatically-usable data. Library of Earth and Sky

After reading all the comments on my talk page, I have decided to scrap the library and instead use simple alphabetised lists ("Animals of the Edge Chronicles" etc). Thank you for your healthy criticism. This being my first venture into Wiki, I kinda guessed I'd make glaringly obvious mistakes, but I intend to learn from them (:

WikiProject: South African municipalities

Pages - its partially programatic. I have some asp code that generates the wiki markup which I cut and paste. I then edit anything that needs an obvious change. Graphs: cool. Do Share. I didn't know Python until a few minutes ago but am sure I can use it. If not no harm done. The only hassle is loading them up into the commons. Does wiki not have some graph type markup? --Waynedam 21:00, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Arg I've been lazy on this for a while and haven't really been working with any database stuff for a while. If I can get as much of the data as possible

As far as I understand it we are going to essentially need to look into getting together two databases: 1) containing information on each of the municipalities - basically the info that appears in the info bar. If somebody draws up a bot that can plug the information into the articles or at least just spew the information into a plaintext file that sets it out how the infobox must look then the process of drawing up municipal articles can move along swiftly.

2) the information on the census information, it may be particularly useful to be in a possition to cite an estimated population for specific settlements based on the census division. However I think this particular matter is being looked at by the various compsci geeks of the world and it is far above my league at this point.

Obviously database 1 will get information from database 2.

Persian people#History

Could you take a look at the first sentence in this section? It claims that Persians are descendants of some "Aryan tribes" migrating from Central Asia. Sounds like outdated racial theories to me. The same source (Britannica) says Persians are of mixed ancentry, but when I try to add this in people remove it. I don't think this is consistent with WP:NPOV. Hi Kierano, I think you did a great job of clarifying the issues I have been having with the editing, and the generalizations. I think I need to discuss this issue of Weasel words with you in the Orania and Volkstaat articles. You gave two examples that I used, however, I fail to see how those examples are actually examples of weaseling. You mention that my responses are reactionary, and perhaps the two examples are of me countering bias, but being unable to articulate around or nullify the previous weaseling tactics. So in effect you see me "out-weaseling" the weasel? I see my comments in [1], [2]. to be not weasel tactics, but instead clarifications to counter act the weaseling tactics. For example, #4 was posted in order to prevent readers from being misled by the notion that Whites in S.A. lost their rights by the misleading (weaseling) comment in the "Lack of Political Power" section earlier which stated "The Afrikaners, who form a small minority group in South Africa (8% of total population 2001 est.), handed over their political power in South Africa during the 1994 democratic elections. " People will be weaseled into thinking they gave up their rights as they read further with all the implied talk of Afrikaaner rights being compromised. So in effect, what I am getting at is that the reactionary Afrikaaner contributions are very subtly crafted to lull the reader into assuming that in S. A weasel word is a word that is intended to, or has the effect of, softening the force of a potentially loaded or otherwise controversial statement, or avoids forming a clear position on a particular issue. for me, I am only trying to UNDO that.

I ask for your input out of honest sincerity, because I think you are the first person that I have come across in here who has properly put the issues in perspective. How can I more effectively dissassemble weaseling tactics by reactionaries in topics of race? I regards to doing the varied things to counteract right-wing contributions that are unmeritious and without citation... How about instead of all of those things you suggested (which are constructive suggestions), instead lets just remove the statements all together and require that they present facts and citations, just in the same manner my statements (and other non-right wing contributors) are removed for the lack of the same quality. If you can feel compelled to remove left-wing comments, why not right-wing comments? I am constantly edited out and told to refer, but when a right-wing comment is done in the same manner, I am required to respond to it (instead of requiring them to remove it and come back). Kierano, thank you for your hard work on the Volkstaat and Orania articles. Your methodology is excellent for the furtherance of an encyclopaedic article, complete with references. Wikipedia is not a forum for free speech, it is an information tool for unbiased facts. Sending you the SA stats data

I haven't checked the data I got from Stats SA thoroughly – and I can't really, not from here – but I can tell you that it can't be too outdated: Plettenberg Bay appears as Bitou. You asked for the data; I'll be happy to send it. I see I can't e-mail you through Wiki, but please e-mail me and then I'll have your address so I can send you the data.

You can't make it language-agnostic; language names, party names, the neighbours field, the very article title are language-dependent. We'll make it in English with an easy way of converting to other languages. (For instance, I have in my mind the algorithm to convert the twelve language fields to my preferred afrikaans 91%, inglês 5%, xhosa 2%, sesotho 2% format. See? Language-dependent.)

My data has no districts; just metro and local municipalities.

By the way, how interesting that you are from PMB; I thought you were from the Cape. The reason for my interest in South Africa lies right there in Maritzburg - by the banks of the Duzi, to be more precise. [3] -- Tintazul ^msg 22:00, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

It is a small world! A Rocha works with DUCT all right, see the 2005 Annual Review (PDF) or Making the connection in South Africa in the latest international news. I've been working with A Rocha for a few years now (web site), have met the SA nat'l director, and when my logo proposal was accepted I took a particular interest in your country. Which led me the the SA Municipalities project!

River

1. I am trying. At present I started with the rivers in Romania, where I worked for some time, to see how a system can be developed to be generalized for other countries.

2. I am willing to help, just let me know what you intend to do.

3. The main problem with rivers is that the general information is relatively poor. It is therefore important to have decent mapt which present the rivers. Most contemporary maps concentrate on roads and administrative divisions and neglect rivers. The maps should be as detailed as possible showing also small tributaries not only the big rivers.

4. It would be useful to find out if there are any government agencies in charge of waters and if they have an inventory of the rivers. This could be a good start to find out what is available.

5. I consider a sytematic approach is required. Just finding a river and writing an article about it does not fill the gap.

6. Let's keep in touch to decide how we go on further.

Again about rivers

Sorry for the delay. I went through the files zou suggested, but the various files just contain some data about different cross-sections. I was not able to finalize anything and it is for not having tried. Maybe there is a way to consolidate the various files in a single table, and find a way to link it to the maps. The maps show the network but not the names of the rivers. That is not very useful. I would like to make some progress and am therefore waiting for suggestions.Afil

Hemlock

You recently changed the hemlock to redirect directly to the conium page. I don't know about the UK but in the states when we say just hemlock it's usually referring to the tree, not poison hemlock. Geobox 2

Hello, this message is sent to you because you've shown some interest in the Geobox templates in past. There is now a new version (aka Geobox 2) which supersedes all older Geoboxes (aka Geobox 1). The major difference is there are no feature specific templates (Settlement, River, Mountain range etc.) but just one master template which can handle all type of data. There are a couple of new features and many new fields making the template much more versatile so now it can be used for virtually any geography related feature without the need to create a specific template.

The switch to Geoboxes 2.0 is highly recommended as the new template has a much more effective code, which renders faster than the old one (with much smaller pre-expand size, it can be one third to one fourth of the pre-expand size of Geoboxes 1). To convert aa page from Geobox 1 to Geobox 2, there are two ways:

• By changing the template header:

  becomes

  {{Geobox|Settlement

  Although some field names have been changed in order to be unified, the old names are accepted too. For any settlement Geobox use {{Geobox|Settlement and set the settlement type (city, borough, town, village) in category field. Calling e.g. {{Geobox|City will work as well but it's not the recommended way (from technical reasons).
• By a semi-automated tool which reorders the field names in the Geobox 2 style and also renames the few changed field names.

re: Battle of Waterloo FAC

Thanks for your message. I'd love to copy-edit this and will try to make the time for it. I reckon it will take about 10-15 hours so it will have to be done piecemeal, spread over a couple of weeks. I have some of the sources but would prefer to concentrate on style as delving for references is very time-consuming. Easiest and best is to do it section by section with people who know the sources checking that nothing significant has been up on the cutting room floor. (e.g. The Army of Toy Soldiers is the street team, but the plans for creating a "Utopian Playground" are clearly part of the fiction). For an encyclopaedia, it's important to make the distinction. True (although there are quite a few of the Army with whom that distinction is blurred, lol). Which is why I put "Utopian Playground" in quotation marks in the article, where once it was not. It's part of his fictional agenda and part of what the Army puts out there on the street, so it's relevant... so not really sure how else to put it other than setting it off with quotes, but any other ideas are welcome. :) --Jonnybgoode44 (talk) 20:11, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok, all this legalese really confuses me. I just got an email from Sgt. Kato (who started and runs the fan website, and one of Dr. Steel's personal friends) and said we were free to use any of the images on this page. UKZN edits

Hi, I've just started to flesh out the University of KwaZulu-Natal page and add some references, though it's the first time I've edited a page and I'm not sure if all the citations and writing style are ok. I'm doing this because many international/exchange students going to UKZN complain about the lack of online information for the university and I have to agree. By the way, nice to see someone else from Pietermaritzburg interested in Bioinformatics. Hydronymy

Hallo, I am interested in hydronymy as it looks the language of prehistoric Europe is reflected therein. I left a message on the wikiproject rivers talkpage, just looking for editors with similar interests to exchange information. I have discovered the so called old european hydronymy is not limited to Europe but has many correspondences in Iran, India and furhter away so I think this disproves the current scholarly etymological interpretations. I read at Template:Did you know nominations/Robert Drayson that you promoted this nomination on the 19th, and Talk:Robert Drayson says it appeared on the main page the same day, but I haven't yet had a DYK notice about it. Could you please fix that?

I can't think why you changed the Alt hook which no one had approved. My suggestion was that the school did not need to be mentioned.
