Economic history articles[edit]

Hey, these days I have been working on a series of articles on the economic history of Chile (hence also the economic section in WotP). I would like you to take a look and do any corrections or contributions you might find necesary. The articles are:

Thank you for the invitation. At the moment I am making maps of the Chilean rivers, templates and so. I will take a look and to improve the new pages as soon as posible. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 14:48, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On the river articles I dont think a ==See also== heading should go before the hydrography templates. That's not the (usual) style used in Wikipedia. Chiton (talk) 16:50, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Floreana Island[edit]

You have made a number of edits changing Santa Maria Island to Floreana Island, which you seem to think is in the Azores. But Wikipedia's article about Floreana Island is about an island in the Galapagos. I am not familiar with either island, but stop making these changes, go back, and fix all the errors you have introduced.

One hint: there should be no links to the disambiguation page Santa Maria Island. Instead, links should go to Floreana Island (Galapagos), Santa María Island, Chile, or Santa Maria Island (Azores), whichever one is intended. Jc3s5h (talk) 21:47, 26 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Easter Island[edit]

Hi Keysanger. I note that you undid my addition to Easter Island, that is, the addition of the date of Easter Sunday in 1722. Given hat such information is widely available in ephemerides and almanacs, and that it is already listed in the artcile 1722, the necessity for a reference is questionable - and in any case, a {{fact}} template would have been far better than simply removing the information. Grutness...wha? 23:33, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: A-C naval arms race[edit]

Hey Keysanger, sorry for not addressing your points earlier. I've done the ones I can, and I'll work on providing torpedo boat figures for the Argentines. However, for your last point ( a large order for rifles, field guns, sabers, and carbines, enough to arm an 80,000-strong [Chilean] army ... 2) Chile, it was forced to take out a £2 million pound loan in order to purchase Krupp weaponry ...), I don't have comparable Argentine figures. Would your sources happen to have them? Also, if your sources are good enough and you can add some substantial details to the article, we should be able to get this through WP:FAC (if you would like that). Cheers, Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 00:18, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In 1901 the Argentine Minister of War Richieri declared at the Parlament that the army had weapons for 300,000 men. This is stated by Lacoste and Julio de Arellano, Ministry Plenipotenciary of Spain in Buenos Aires (cited in Pedro Santos Martínez, "Documentos Diplomáticos sobre historia argentina, 1850-1954"), Tomo V: 1890-1909. Centro de Estudios e Investigaciones Históricas "Cuyo", Mendoza, 2002, ISBN 987-43-1155-X, pág. 124, documento nr.:368). As far as I remember, the Argentine historian Georg von Rauch shows more details about Argentine (army) weapons purchase at that time, but I can't access the complete book by google. I will try to find the book at the library. Anyway, the article has my support to WP:FAC, the details we are dealing now aren't decisive for the naval race. Also the issue "torpederas" doesn't change the balance of power, although it should have an adequate mention. Von Rauch lists the torpederas here, but his figures are different than Lacoste. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 12:43, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I got the book Conflict in the Southern Cone, Georg v. Rauch, ISBN 0-275-96347-0, published 1999. He writes in page 114:
The arms race with Chile dictated the need for greater quantities of artillery. During the 1896-1898 contracts worth 12 millons marks were placed in Germany for 351 pieces. ...[300 old Krupps already in war arsenal], . On the other hand, one hundred Maxim machine guns Model 1892/1898 had replaced the older Gatling and Nodenfelts. ... . An additional 180 Krupp Model 1898 75 mm mountain guns, 36 Krupp Model 105 mm howitzers, and 12 Krupp Model 1902 130mm siege guns were delivered during 1898 and 1902.
It isn't easy to confront this Argentine figures with the Chilean in the article. How much is 12 millions mark?. In the table 6.8, page 157 he gives a Comparative Military Expenditures, Argentina and Chile, 1890-1902 in USD with absolutes and % of Budget.
Grand Total (12 Years):
* Argentina USD 258,684,417
* Chile USD 137,994,900
The expenditures are extracted from different sources (and probably different methods).
I don't like Rauch, he seems to be happy of so much wasting of money. If you can't get the book, I can transcript the relevant paragraphs and tables. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 17:52, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, he's probably happy because without that spending, he might not have a published book. ;-) I'll look and see if I can find historical exchange rates between German gold marks and US dollars. I can request Rauch through inter-library loan sometime on Saturday, but it won't get here for a couple weeks. It's helpful that he gives a grand total, and I'll definitely add that to the article, but I suspect we'll find that every historian will have their own figures. Does he break that down by year, perchance? It would be interesting to see what year Argentina passed Chile. Regarding FAC, it's a little short right now, and I think we can add more details to the article before submitting it. :-) Thanks for all your help, Keysanger. Now it's off to bed, with work in the morning! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 08:16, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chilean ship Lautaro (1818)[edit]

Hi Keysanger, I wish you hadn't moved this article. The Lautaro wasn't launched in 1800, the Windham was. The 1818 year is the year of accession for Windham into the Chilean Navy as Lautaro. A better way of dealing with the launch date would be to move the article to Windham (1800), with a redirect from Lautaro (1818). Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 12:47, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Captured ships[edit]

Hi Keysanger, thanks for your recent contribution to the List of ships captured in the 19th century page, however, the entries you submitted do not specify the dates of capture. Could you supply this information, and also use the existing format to conform with the rest of the list? If you are not familiar with formatting techniques, no sweat, I can handle that, but the dates of capture are important. Thanks, -- Gwillhickers (talk) 16:17, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lighthouses[edit]

I'm glad that someone is adding new material. However categories must be supported by facts in the articles. For some lighthouse articles I have actually gone looking for more and found nothing. So the are problems. I believe that all of the categories I have removed were correct actions on my part. In fact, I'm actually leaving some that should be deleted by not following the guidelines. I'm simply going through that tree to add the year they were completed and if they are towers, adding them to that category. It is better to leave out information that can not be supported by references. Also, listing an island or a town as a lighthouse is very confusing. It is better to place those categories on a redirect with the name of the lighthouse. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:25, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categories are not articles so they have different guidelines. From your reply it seems that you are arguing for a list which is an alternative to a cate3gory and has different guidelines. In any case, you should read Wikipedia:Categorization#Articles which clearly states the defining requirement for the article topic to be included. And yes, there is a warning template that can be used. But generally cleanup is better. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:58, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Stop deleting information. Thank you. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 09:34, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fjords and channels of Chile[edit]

I saw your contributions to Fjords and channels of Chile. Im glad you have expanded the content. However I think the structure and visual style of the page can be improved. I think the ideal would end up with an article like List of volcanoes in Indonesia (a featured list) that offers prose, orderly lists and pleny of pictures without taking up to much space. Do you agree in modeling Fjords and channels of Chile after List of volcanoes in Indonesia)? Dentren | Talk 22:20, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Saludos, --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 07:56, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
--Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 15:16, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

4.1 Ferry lanes
4.2 The Isthmus of Ofqui canal construction project
4.3 Chacao Channel bridge

5.1 Chacao to Guafo
5.2 Guaitecas to the Gulf of Penas
5.3 Gulf of Penas to Straits of Magellan
5.4 Tierra del Fuego and Puerto Natales

6 Ranked lists

6.2 Lenght

Speedy deletion of Template:Canalrow[edit]

Hi. I am intrigued by your assumption that Canalrow is "useless". How did you arrive at such an assumption? If you had clicked on the "What links here" tool, you would have seen that it is used on Template:Waterways legend to handle the display of icons, and that that page is linked to most UK canal and river maps, of which there are many hundreds, as it provides the documentation which enables readers to understand the maps. Chilean lighthouses[edit]

You have just dome a tremendous amount of work in splitting the lighthouses. What I do not yet understand is why you have done so. Where may I find the rationale for the immense task, please? Fiddle Faddle

Because of the size of the article. Without fotos the article was 190 kb. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 07:52, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
May I suggest you do something to make it clear(er) to those stumbling upon them that there is a series of such articles? YOu can see that it confused at least one editor, so it will, presumably, confuse others, Fiddle Faddle 07:55, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good idea, someone should do that!. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 07:58, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the layout of the first list to plain wikitables and would also edit the other lists this way. The main reason for doing this is that you spare a lot of code, and what is most important: blue font colour should only be used for clickable links. De728631 (talk) 15:27, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Could you review Lighthouses in Chile?. I moved a lot of text from the lists to this page. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 20:06, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I've moved the part that explains the NGA tables back to the main list page because it was quite useless in the overview article where there are no such tables. On another note, the separate lists 1–7 could still need a lot of cleanup, e.g. punctuation is an issue: we don't use periods or semi-colons at the end of cell entries. And, if possible, wikilinks should be added to names of locations. De728631 (talk) 21:55, 1 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did copy&paste from the NGA table. The semi-colons were there as well as the dots after the height of the structure. You deleted the dash before the "names", but they were place holder for the name of the (wiki-)table. I would say, if NGA can live with that table, wikipedia should also. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 10:06, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The List of Lights does not use gridded tables like Wikipedia but it's a loosely arranged list where the content is mostly separated by whitespaces so they need additional periods and semi-colons to mark the end of an entry. That style is completely redundant when you use gridlines. De728631 (talk) 16:51, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have a question. commons:Category:Sala y Gómez shows 3 fotos with a lighthouse, and Isla Salas y Gómez says that there is a beacon. But in NGA doesn't appear this lighthouse, nor under its rapa-nui name Motu Motiro.
In Desventuradas Islands, especially San Felix, there is no mention of a lh, but in NGA appear under 1129/G 1937 , Isla San Felix, a lighthouse. Can you explain that?. --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 21:35, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Russ Rowlett mentions both the Sala y Gómez light and the one at Desventuradas Islands in his list [2]. That the lighthouse at Isla San Felix hasn't yet been mentioned in the Wikipedia article about the archipelago is most likely based on the fact that nobody either cared to add it or people didn't know about it when they created or edited the article which is still basically a stub with a simple list of individual islands. But I have no idea why the NGA missed the Sala y Gómez light. De728631 (talk) 18:08, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am very sceptic regarding to "free" updates, complements and interpretations of the NGA list. Therefore I let the Argentine lighthouses in the list albeit they don't belong to Chile and added only a foto of SyG and not a record. I think it is better to let the list "as is". --Best regards, Keysanger (what?) 23:28, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Keysanger. Please stop adding the "continental" bit to the SMS Gneisenau article.
