Progress on WP:Snuggle and work log

I've been making some progress on Snuggle development recently and I could use your feedback. Specifically, I've created a work log that I plan to update every time I get a chance to work on Snuggle. My intention is that you'll be able to watch that page to track my progress so I can get your feedback on features when they are early in development. The most recent entry (also the only entry) discusses new functionality for interacting with newcomers via Snuggle. I posted some mockups in the work log that show how I imagine the new features to work and I could use some feedback before I start writing the code. Thanks! --EpochFail(talkwork) 20:29, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

HostBot error

HostBot seems to have inappropriately removed me from Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host landing in this edit. I've undone it, but thought you would like to know. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 20:40, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Really appreciate this. I believe I've fixed the problem, but that particular code is delicate right now, and in need of a refactor. If you see anything else, I'd appreciate another heads-up. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 06:38, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Teahouse invitation

Hi, could you explain why I got a teahouse invite?[1] Thanks. -- Cheers, Riley 01:25, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

I know understand why; my bot talk page redirects to my user talk page. Could you please exempt bots from invitations? -- Cheers, Riley 01:29, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
I was wondering that, also. Please do exempt all bots from welcome messages. This bot should not have met the new editor requirements, either. -166.137.210.24 (talk) 14:59, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Other than the fact it is a bot, my bot did meet the new editor requirements, so I don't know why you are saying "This bot should not have met the new editor requirements, either." -- Cheers, Riley 20:53, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads-up. Should be fixed: neither bots nor user talkpages that are redirects should get an invite now. But I'll check in on the bot's edits periodically over the next week to make sure. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 03:00, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. Riley, I can't think of a response for why anyone would think bots should get welcome messages. -166.137.210.32 (talk) 22:23, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
Just to be clear, anon: neither Riley nor I thought bots should get welcome messages. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 22:28, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
This bot is clearly identified as a bot attached to a user as an alternate account, therefore it should not be identified as a "user." -166.137.210.21 (talk) 19:55, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

HELP! New Host in need of expert assistance

Hi J-Mo! I'm a host on Tea House and I think I joined a wee bit too early cause I've messed up my Tea House scripts... I really need your advice and help as I'm not exactly JavaScript Savvy... I have now made it a point to learn Java... but until then can you be my Java Guru??? Thanks if its an affirmative and no problem if it's not!!! Cheers Ajayupai95 (talk) 17:47, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Ajayupai95! Are you still having trouble? I looked at your common.js page and the only thing I can see that might cause difficulties is that you have an extra blank line at the top. Delete that line and see if it works? You can compare with my common js page, for reference. Also, welcome to the Teahouse! And don't worry about messing up the scripts--I've done that before myself, and also much worse ;) Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:14, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

I can't thank you enough!!!! All my tools are available and the Naviagtion in perfect!!!! Loads of thank you, and I stand corrected senior ediotrs and bots are the best to deal with and request help from!!!! :) Ajayupai95 (talk) 01:15, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Another request for the Java Guru!!!

Hi again JMo (I know your tired of me asking for help), this is the last favor I wanna ask you...I wanted to start using my Curator Toolbar and opened the New Pages Feed only to find a message saying that my browser needs to JavaScript enabled... I checked thru my settings and my Chrome browser is Java enabled... I don't know what to do... Request for help and assistance one last time, and I promise I won't bother you ever again.... Thank You!!! :) Ajayupai95 (talk) 16:41, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hey, Ajayupai! First of all, Wikipedia is currently having some technical issues, which is probably what's causing this. You should just be able to wait it out, and you'll be fine.
But just in case: what you have to realize here is that Java and Javascript are two totally different things. (The only reason Javascript even has "Java" in the name is as a marketing gimmick; they're no more than superficially similar.) Your browser can be Java-enabled without having Javascript enabled. What you need to do: go to your Chrome settings here: [chrome://settings]. Make sure you click on "show advanced options" at the bottom of that page, to be sure you can see everything. Go to the "Privacy" section, and click on the "Content settings..." button. There should be a "JavaScript" section in the new popup window; make sure it's set to "Allow all sites to run JavaScript". Writ Keeper 16:50, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Boy, are you guys fast or what??? Hi Writ Keeper! Yes I do know that java and JavaScript are different and yes I have enable javaScript on My Chrome's advanced settings!!! The message says that this extension needs a JavaScript enable browser... Which mine obviously is!!! So you got me any answers or am I really dumb and just didn't make sense??? Plz tell me!!!! Ajayupai95 (talk) 17:45, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Like I said, Wikipedia is having technical difficulties that the ops are still working on; it's causing a lot of the site's Javascript to fail, which in turn is probably causing the problems you're seeing. Just have to be patient; it'll be fixed soon. :) Writ Keeper 17:49, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hostbot automated invites

Hello. It will be really nice if you could add my name to the Hostbot's automated invites to the Teahouse. And I think there's an error at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Hosts/Database reports/Automated invites's Participant list section. It says curHosts is located at line 44 but actually it located at line 51. Maybe it's an error or maybe not, you know better. Thanks.--Ushau97 talk contribs 11:39, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Help!

Hi J-Mo, can you help or direct me to someone who can remove the flags from Joe LaPorta page? I've followed all of the previous suggestions but have noticed that the flags are still present on the page. Thanks in advance!

Hi Steve! Are you saying you want to remove the "Close connection" and "Reads like an advertisement" banners from the page? If so, the article will need to be edited (by someone who is not Joe LaPorta or an employee/coworker of same) and the identified issues addressed. I wish I had time to help you personally, but I don't right now. Have you asked your question at the Teahouse? I would suggest asking a question there, and including as much detail on what you've done so far, and what you want to do, as possible. Happy editing! - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 22:26, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello

Firstly, I am an 18 year old student proficient in java, and willing to learn almost anything related to coding/ any other topic. I just finished my examinations, and I was wondering if I could help around in any way I could. If there is anything I can help around with, please do tell.

Also, could you please comment on the TAFI talk page? We are trying to finalize TAFI being added to the Main Page; and it was suggested that I contact you so that we could monitor Editor retention and the quality of articles because of TAFI. We would appreciate it if you could hop in with your comments.

Thanks and cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 06:32, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, Soni. I left a comment. I'm very enthusiastic about TAFI and look forward to monitoring its progress. I can also provide additional input on how to demonstrate impact of TAFI after it has been implemented. Thanks for asking me! - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:47, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
Oh, and regarding coding: I left a comment regarding the 'reply to this discussion' thread started on HL. I think we might be able get what you're asking for by updating the JavaScript Gadget. Writ Keeper is da man when it comes to JS. If you're interested in helping with the HostBot code, I don't have any concrete tasks to suggest at the moment but definitely take a look at the codebase on GitHub and feel free to fork it and play around. The documentation isn't great at this point, but let me know if you have any questions, improvements to suggest or would like to experiment with changes to the functionality of particular scripts. Right now, I'm focusing on re-stabilizing everything after a long period of flux, but there are obviously lots of improvements to be made and even handy new features that could be implemented. I don't have a lot of time to collaborate closely, but we should definitely start the conversation. Especially f you're interested in working with HostBot on a more long-term basis. ;) Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:54, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Could you send me a Talkback the next time you reply to my posts? Thank you; that will make sure I actually read them. :)
Regarding the coding, I simply wanted to learn more about codihng, especially how it can help when it comes to things onWiki. I am good with Java, but have no knowledge as such about Javascript or anything else beyond what I know. I am not sure how good I'll be at helping, but I sure would like to give it a try. Also, I have nothing about where I want to help. I an fine with helping anywhere.
P.S. You've got mail.

Hostbot invites to bots

I received a Teahouse invitation on my bot-in-trial's talk page (User talk:WxBot. I don't mind the friendly invite, but it might ease the load on your bot if you could somehow program it to exclude bots (I'm not sure how hard this would be). Again, I didn't mind the invite - I just thought I'd give a friendly suggestion. Inks.LWC (talk) 02:47, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Hmmm. Thanks for the heads-up! My bot should already be checking the user_groups table for bots and ignoring them... I just checked the database and it appears as though WxBot does not have a bot flag yet. That's probably why HostBot invited it. It might be worth checking with BAG to confirm what I'm seeing, and get WxBot flagged if it hasn't been. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:32, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Right, as I said, it's still in the trial period, so it doesn't have the bot flag yet. Inks.LWC (talk) 23:35, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
I see. Well, without the bot flag there's no easy programmatic way I know of to exclude bots--that's what the bot flag is for after all. If you have a suggestion though, let me know. And thanks for the alerting me regardless. Always useful to know what kind of shenanigans my bot is getting itself up to. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 23:38, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
The only thing that came to mind was to look for "bot" in the username, but that would be problematic for people who have words like "both" or "bother", etc. in their name. Not sure I can be of much help brainstorming - just figured I'd pass the info along in case you had any ideas. :) Inks.LWC (talk) 23:41, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Teahouse Small Badges

Hey there... I got my sandbox to work... I worked with Soni to get it figured out, and you can check it out → User talk:TheOriginalSoni#Teahouse Badges. I'd be interested specifically from you to know if the changes would affect the bots counting, and if it would be possible to implement the changes live. Then, it would be great if the bot could go through and count how many of each badge each of us has gotten and update the templates on the host lounge and the breakroom even. What do you think? Technical 13 (talk) 01:24, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Teahouse WikiLove

Hey, I just found WP:Village pump (technical)#Temporarily disabling WikiLove on English Wikipedia and thought it might be of interest to you. Should we post some kind of notice on the Teahouse page someplace? How would we go about doing that, is there a template designed for host notices? Technical 13 (talk) 23:28, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

(moved from user page) Not really sure a notice is necessary; it is what it is. WikiLove isn't a notable part of the Teahouse or anything. Writ Keeper  05:21, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for moving this here Writ. I was really tired last night. I was pointing it out because of the fact that it may effect the results of the data gathered by host bot for number of badges given until WikiLove is fixed. Technical 13 (talk) 11:40, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads-up. We should let Ocaasi know as well, since he's the one who created the Badge WikiLove addon and I think he's the one using it most as well. As far as I can tell, this change might make it less convenient to give out badges, but it won't affect badge tracking. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 18:54, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
I think I already informed him as I knew he is the one with the WikiLove badge add-on (with my changes to include message and signed shameless self promo). IIRC, I've also let Heather, Sarah, Writ, and Soni know since those are the people I asked for help from on the change to small badges, which Soni and I figured out last night btw.  :) You should take a look, as I would love to get it approved to go live and adjust hostbot to do the updating. :) Technical 13 (talk) 19:09, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
I won't be able to adjust HostBot right now, so for now we're only tracking when someone got their first badge (of a given type). I do like your addition of a numbers parameter to the small badge, but I confess I'm a little behind on what other changes you made to the template, so I don't want to say "go for it" only to find that some changes interfere with some social or technical process. Can you give me a brief rundown? Or, better yet, post a description to the Host Lounge? I will say that as long as each badge still includes a hyperlink to its unique badge page, and doesn't link to the pages of any other individual badges, we should be okay on the data-gathering front. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 01:08, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
On WP:Teahouse/Badge/Large I changed the padding a smidge and added a couple table rows to include the {{{message}}} and {{{signed}}} parameters when existent.
On WP:Teahouse/Badge/Format and WP:Teahouse/Badge/Answer I added some instructions to the documentation for the change in the large badge. /Format diff and /Answer diff.
Then, finally for the small badges I created a full set of -sandbox templates (WP:Teahouse/Host-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Small-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Host-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Answer-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Question-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Easter_egg-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Welcome-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Genie-sandbox, WP:Teahouse/Badge/Maitre_d'-sandbox, and WP:Teahouse/Badge/Saucer-sandbox).
Specifically, I changed this stuff on host, this stuff on small, and added a qty parameter to the rest. Technical 13 (talk) 02:18, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Personal hostbot assistance

I was curious if you had the time to add a task to hostbot that could help me out some (and maybe other hosts will want it too). Considering Wikipedia talk:Teahouse/Host lounge#HostBot Messages and notifications, I plan on adding user talk pages where the host bot leaves a message in my name to my watchlist. I'd like to keep my watchlist clean, which would mean removing those users who don't continue editing. Would it be reasonably possible to have hostbot create a list for me in my userspace of editors were it left a message in my name but have gone 2 weeks without editing (at any point really, so if they edit for a week after the message and then stop, I'd like to be notified). If this is too difficult, it's no problem. Ryan Vesey 01:37, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

That's a nice idea for long term (in fact maybe capture in on the wish list?) but it would take a bit of coding work and probably a new bot approval. What I could probably do within a reasonable timeframe, tho, is add a column to the database report table that includes the name of the host whose name was included on the welcome. If you remember to check, you could click through to those users' pages and either watch 'em or welcome them. What do you think? - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 02:15, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Hostbot invitations

Hi. Could you please remove my name from Hostbot's automated invitations? I'm retiring and I don't think it's okay for newbies to receive invitations from someone who is not active. And I hope the Teahouse will be a successful project. :D Thanks --Ushau97 (talk) 09:54, 3 May 2013 (UTC) moved from userpage Writ Keeper  12:49, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Ushau97, no problem. Tho I'm sorry to see you go. Come back to the TH any time! - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 19:01, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
At least I'm not the only one that has done it. I'm wondering if there is a link somewhere for you that says "message me" and links to your userpage causing people to post comments for you on the wrong page. Is that a possibility? Technical 13 (talk) 13:01, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Technical 13, I don't think there's a misleading link anywhere, but there could be. I suspect people just tend to post requests to Writ first because they are afraid of offending him and bringing his fiery wrath down upon their heads. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 19:01, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
Hm? No, Ushau originally posted this on your user page, rather than your user talk page; I just moved the thread to the talk page so you'd see it. I'm just a bystander. Writ Keeper  19:05, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

University of Washington

Hi! I received your message.

I think details of rankings should be placed on the individual section not the introduction (like the articles of Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc). It's fine to mention the reputation but a single sentence is enough to conclude the general trend on the intro (like "it has been ranked among top 10 by different university rankings" or "it is among the most prestigious universities"). In fact, I think a good university need not stress its reputation greatly and intentionally. Moreover, the content added is not well-organized as pieces of information about rankings spread among different paragraphs with different kinds of results displayed (some are the previous results when some are results of subject rankings), and are mixed with other types of info. That seems a bit messy. Wish you can help to improve the quality of the article. Thanks!

Biomedicinal (talk) 11:58, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Good points. I'll keep an eye out for the anon, and try to clean up any mentions of the rankings that appear in the lede. Always happy to help the ol' purple & gold shine! - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 05:06, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Some chips to placate your HostBot

HostBot/Teahouse

I'm not sure what your criteria are for the automated invite, but I see a lot of invites on pages of accounts that are banned for socking, and I don't see invites on others' pages where I would think I would see them. Now, admittedly, I only tend to interact with new users' talk pages when there is an issue, so my POV may be skewed a bit, but maybe the trigger needs adjustment? MSJapan (talk) 01:59, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Hey there. Thanks for the heads-up. The invite criteria are here. The script should avoid users who have received a block or a level-4 warning. It looks for any of these strings associated with common block or high-level warning templates and skips users who have them: 'uw-vandalism4', 'uw-socksuspect', 'Socksuspectnotice', 'Uw-socksuspect', 'sockpuppetry', 'uw-cluebotwarning4', 'uw-vblock', 'uw-speedy4'. See anything missing from this list that might cause the bot to invite identified socks or other blocked users? If so I can add them in.
Do you have any example you can point me to? That might help me reproduce the error. As for not inviting certain good faith newcomers... I wish I could invite them all :) Any suggestions on other criteria I could use to identify more of the good faith newbies are appreciated, although if I do want to expand the invite list (currently about 100 new users per day) I'll have to file another bot request >_<. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 04:33, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
I've noticed this too on a lot of blocked editors pages and think it has more to do with how fast HostBot is working. Maybe it needs to be slowed down a little? Technical 13 (talk) 09:55, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
If you can provide me with some examples, I can figure out what might not be working. Otherwise, any change I make would be simply guesswork :( - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 16:11, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
I came here based on the notice here, and I know it wasn't isolated, because I know it has happened before. I think it might be useful to expand the tags to vandalism2 (and above) and ANI discussion tags - legitimate new users tend not to get those. The user in this case was not blocked at the time of the notice, but the ANI notice was there. MSJapan (talk) 23:38, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Bug Report-Blocked users

I know this is rare, but I saw a user that got blocked recently after the creation of his account (he was a spammer for a gaming group that blamed his actions on me). I saw that HostBot had given a Teahouse invitation to the user. There is a bug that blocked users can be invited (although this is rare). Can you fix it? Citrusbowler (talk) 01:22, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I'm not certain that I agree all blocked\banned users should be excluded from receiving an invitation. I'm sure that J-Mo will need the user name for your example to research the way and how either way. Perhaps users that are actively blocked shouldn't get invites but hostbot could monitor the block log and make sure that everyone who has just gotten unblocked gets one promptly? That would make good sense to me. Technical 13 (talk) 02:56, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
I have seen this before... though it is rare. It may be database lag, or just a small lag in the script (see above thread). If you pass me the page I'll look into what happened in this case. Currently, HB is set up to skip any new user who has received ANY block in the time they've been on site. Since all invitees registered within the past 1-4 days most of them won't have been blocked yet, though many have received some sort of warning. I only skip people who have received certain more serious warnings, since AGF is part of the core Teahouse ethos. Technical: your suggestions for code updates are excellent, but will have to wait 'til I'm out of dissertation land. Maybe throw them up on the WishList for now? I swear I do at least look at that page sometimes! ;) - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 20:47, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Code question

I know you did something like this with the Teahouse with hosts, so I thought you might be the one to ask. On my talk page, would it be possible to have a queue of quotes, one of which randomly shows up when someone loads the page sort of like how a random host picture appears at the TH question forum? If so, how would I go about doing that? No rush, just something I might want to do. Thanks. Go Phightins! 19:32, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Check out {{Random subpage}}... That "should" answer your question. Technical 13 (talk) 20:07, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Yep. Technical's right. Just put each quote on its own subpage (i.e. Go_Phightins/quotes/1, Go_Phightins/quotes/2, Go_Phightins/quotes/3...), set up the template, and you're good to go. - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 20:40, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
It works! Thanks to both of you. Go Phightins! 00:03, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

HostBot processing of Teahouse questions

[2] is based on [3]. HostBot's processing has two unrelated problems which each cause misformatting. 1) '<' and '> from span tags in the signature were converted to html. 2) The whole linked section heading WikiProject Requested Articles was passed to Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions-answer instead of only the displayed part "WikiProject Requested Articles" which would have generated a correct result:

Hey J-mo! There is a deletion discussion (of all things) about WP:TWA. I cited some data about Teahouse for comparison to a similarly spirited project. I do not know how to send you a message. I used the edit button to type this message. If it is alright, then go on. Thanks for contacting me. I am a management writer from India. Recently, I was asked by an academic agency in UK to write an article making a critical analysis of a management theory. In fact in my preamble, I made a reference to Wikipedia as the source of my information. The agency rejected my article saying that they would not accept Wikipedia reference. I merely referred to your material as my reference and then gave my detailed analysis. They were not polite. They replied that I should have referred to the original text of the author whose management theory I was supposed to analyze. This really hurt me. They did not go by logic of my arguments. I have vast and practical experiences in management field. I am presently preparing course curriculum for a new management course coined by me as Ethics Management. I am really interested in contributing articles on Management to Wikipedia who are doing immense service to the people in the world who cannot afford to buy costly books of academic writers who are minting money.
