< I'd like to bring my account into compliance with Wikipedia's rules and conflict of interest policy, and to begin to do so by changing my user name to reflect my own name rather than that of the organization where I work. I've now read the editorial guidelines, and while I work for Draper, any posts regarding the lab -- particularly in updating the page that was created by someone else and contains no information after 1973 -- will be completely neutral in tone and cited to reliable sources on the web. July 2011[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Charles Stark Draper Laboratory has been reverted.
Your edit here to Charles Stark Draper Laboratory was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (http://www.youtube.com/user/draperlaboratory/) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a media file (e.g. a sound or video file) on an external server, then note that linking to such files may be subject to Wikipedia's copyright policy, as well as other parts of our external links guideline. If the information you linked to is indeed in violation of copyright, then such information should not be linked to. Please consider using our upload facility to upload a suitable media file, or consider linking to the original.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 19:30, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block. Alexf(talk) 19:38, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Hello, I would like to bring my account into compliance to get unblocked, and am a little confused about how to do so. I attempted to appeal to the admin who had blocked me, but haven't gotten a response, perhaps because I'm not doing this right. I work at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, which has an existing Wiki page that was created by someone else -- none of us know who. Unfortunately, the page's info ends in 1973, which has me concerned that some readers may have the impression that our work ended in 1973. That is very much not the case, and I tried to edit the article, based on information that is already online, to give a general overview of what Draper Lab does today. I had thought that using the name DraperLab would be beneficial for transparency, and did not realize that it was against the rules. I am happy to work with any admin here who can help me get unblocked, bring my account into compliance, and allow me to edit the page in keeping with Wikipedia guidelines. Thanks! Decline reason:

You will need to change to a new username which represents only you as an individual. Accounts named for a group or organization are not allowed. To do that, place another unblock request below here, of the form {{unblock-un | user=<new username> | reason=<your reason here>}}.

Before doing that, please read WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest, and say in your unblock request that you understand and will abide by it - suggest changes on the article talk page rather than making them directly, declaring your interest, and accept that your edits should be neutral in tone, cited to reliable sources, and in no way attempt to promote your employer. JohnCD (talk) 21:23, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Hi Alex, I work at Draper Laboratory. We have seen that our existing page -- which was created by someone else -- has not been updated with information past 1973, and we're trying to add some brief info that would bring it into the present day, and do so in a transparent fashion. What's the best way for us to get unblocked and do this?

Thanks, Jeremy Singer Draperlab (talk) 20:31, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One of the reasons your account is blocked is because it's a role account, which is not permitted. It seems that you are blocked from creating a new account. You may be able to let the admins change the block settings to a {{softerblock}}, in order for you to create a personal account. Then, you'll be able to edit, but you'll have to make sure not to cause a conflict of interest. — Waterfox ~talk~ 19:43, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm interested[edit]

Hello Mr. Singer, My family has a long past connection with Draper Laboratories. In 2013 I did a major rewrite to better reflect the accomplishments of the laboratory.

I note that you are the media relations manager, which makes it a higher bar, but not impossible for you to conform to WP:NPOV with your contributions. I see further that there is a lot of newsworthy material in the press releases on the Draper website. I would be happy to consider further and continuing updates if you can point me towards instances where reliable sources, such as newspapers or trade magazines (especially on the caliber of Aviation Week) pick up on the material that you are releasing and publish it. You could then provide a link around which I could update information in the article.

Pictures that Draper is willing to publish in Wikimedia Commons would also be welcome. They might be the shot that you chose not to use in the brochure or web page, but still illustrates the subject and which you are willing to put into the public domain. I'll watch this page for any news and replies that you may have. BTW, the new logo is not subject to copyright, even though it has legal status as a trademark; this was also the case with the old logo. Sincerely, User:HopsonRoad 17:34, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Draper Lab Cambridge headquarters building.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Draper Lab Cambridge headquarters building.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
