About the CERN article

Hello

Back in May, 2003 you wrote an excellent article about CERN. Still recall? :) Here is the original revision by you. The article has lived much since. I'm just troubled with this one sentence in the beginning of this paragraph. It has totally lost its context.

If you were originally referring to CERN as a whole, then I propose putting it in the second paragraph: "CERN currently employs just under 3000 people full-time. Some 6500 scientists and engineers (representing 500 universities and 80 nationalities), about half of the world's particle physics community, work on experiments conducted at CERN. CERN also has very impressive computer and wide-area networking facilities which are primarily used for experimental data analysis."

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

OR

Option 2

New ship table template

I've spent the last few days working on a new ship table template to enable us to centralise the editing of things like weapons outfits for a particular class of ships in one template (so with the Fletchers or Gearings or other big classes you only have to edit in one place to alter a mistake rather than in dozens or hundreds). Please have a look at the WikiProject Ships page's talk section and see what you think. I haven't written the instructions for using it yet, and I want to see whether there are any table cells people would like me to include that aren't present yet. There are two example tables, one with all the optional cells present, and the other with some excluded. David Newton 14:10, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)


Nameless vessels

You contributed a number of articles on early Royal Navy submarines, including HMS A.1 and other British A class submarines. So I think it would be good if you could contribute to the discussion on the naming convention for nameless vessels like these, currently taking place at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (ships)#Royal Navy submarines with no name. Smallsword

Hi ! I have taken the liberty to detour you excellent Image:Smallsword.jpg and upload it on Commons. I was just wondering whether you would consider puttin the image under a Creating Commons licence as well, for instance CC-by-sa, which has basically the same properties as the GFDL, but makes it easier to use the image.

Cut-and-paste moves

Hi, you used a cut-and-paste move to move HMS P311 to P.311 (or maybe it was HMS P.311, I'm not sure). Please don't do cut-and-paste moves, as it separates the article from its history, which we need to keep for Wikipedia:Copyright reasons. Please use WP:RM for help with moves if the "Move this page" link/tab doesn't work. I will fix this one - have you done any others? Thanks! Noel (talk) 01:28, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

COAS

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article COAS, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Importance). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:COAS. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Thanks for uploading Image:The Nek Cemetery.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Operation Marine

Hi, It was a long time ago and I cannot remember. However it is mentioned in a modern reprint of a Victorian book on advances in technology, and I have updated the article to reflect that, and included a reference this time. The chapter on Torpedoes starts by explaining that (in 1890) the idea of destroying ships using submerged or floating containers of gunpowder is not new, and illustrates this with the sentence "Two hundred and fifty years ago the English tried "floating petards" at the siege of Rochelle." before mentioning that similar devices were used against the British during the American War of Independence. -- Jll 17:46, 5 March 2007

Date for the Wreck of HMS Pomone

Can you please confirm the contents of an edit you made to HMS Pomone (1805) that changed the date of its wreck to January 1811? I cannot confirm your source readily, as I do not have a copy of the text in question, but I have found a wealth of sources on the web that date the wreck as 11 October or 14 October 1811:

Muzzle-loading rifles

Hi there; yes, i suppose that small-arms such as the Minié and the Dreese and so forth count as muzzle-loading rifles. I was writing in a strictly naval framework, as you obviously realise, and it never occurred to me to include them. You do what you think best, but I would personally have thought that mergfing would be quite tricky - they are really two different subjects - and not necessarily in the best interest of either article. I would have thought that just a link referring both ways might be adequate. But I don't own the article (I read that somewhere!)--Anthony.bradbury 21:02, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

United States Coast Guard use of Flower Class Corvettes

I requested a citation in the Flower class corvette article for United Stated Coast Guard use of Flower class corvettes or Action class gunboats. Coast Guard crews manned a number of United States Navy vessels including some destroyer escorts and most of the Tacoma class frigates during the second world war, but relatively few of these ships (designated by a "W" prefix to the hull classification symbol) were actually Coast Guard vessels. Would it be more appropriate to note parenthetically "(some manned by U.S. Coast Guard)" if that was the case for these corvettes? Thewellman (talk) 12:30, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
