The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive began on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to eliminate as many articles as possible from the 2009 backlog and to reduce the overall backlog by 15%. ! NEW ! In an effort to encourage the final elimination of all 2009 articles, we will be tracking them on the leaderboard for this drive.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

We look forward to meeting you on the drive! Your GOCE coordinators: SMasters, Diannaa, Tea with toast, Chaosdruid, and Torchiest

Windseeker Images

hello, I read your comment that I asked about the images and just wanted to say thanks. Therefore, if you are able to take your camera, try to take a couple shots that would be suitable for windseekers info box. This would help with the much needed picture that is needed for the article. also, if my mind serves me correctly, you said once that a picture from the effiel tower in the park would be perfect for the info box. If you can, you should try to get a picture from the effiel tower. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dom497 (talkcontribs) 01:48, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

No problem. I had no problem securing permission to take the camera with me, and I intend to get quite a few shots, both close-up photos of the seats and rotation unit and long-distance shots of the tower and ride as a whole. How good of a shot I can get for the infobox depends on whether they have the ride testing at full speed tomorrow, though. I probably won't be able to upload the photos until Wednesday. jcgoble3 (talk) 02:01, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
I did get some photos yesterday; they are linked at Talk:WindSeeker#Some WindSeeker photos taken yesterday. jcgoble3 (talk) 16:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Image Request

I've looked at the photos and listed 2 that i think are suitable for the article. They are listed on the talk page of WindSeeker.--Dom497 (talk) 21:25, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

This will be answered on the article's talk page in a few minutes. jcgoble3 (talk) 21:40, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Replace Animated With Reality?

Hello, i was just taking a second look at the photos you posted and noticed that 5-WindSeeker from the Eiffel Tower and 9-WindSeeker from Beast queue look really like the 2 current animated photos for the break-down of the ride. Is it a good idea to possible replace those animated photos with your 2 photos? If you think its a good idea, then would you mind me adding words to the photo and uploading the photo myself (with the current license + it will not affect the actually photo on flicker or the info box picture)? I'm really debated weather which one is better: animated or reality (the actually ride photo). Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.92.232.98 (talk) 23:55, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

That probably would be a good idea, since it would enable us to replace a pair of fair use images with free versions. In terms of animated vs. reality, reality probably is better. Feel free to add the text to the photos and upload them; you technically don't need my permission, as the license explicitly permits this. Note that Flickr only licenses photos under the 2.0 version of the CC-BY-SA license, but as noted on my profile, I have released them under the 1.0, 1.5, and 3.0 versions also. To avoid any confusion with new image patrollers over at Commons, I've uploaded image 9 to Commons myself as File:Kings Island WindSeeker from Beast queue.jpg, so you can simply upload the modified versions as a derivative work. Note that unless you're a registered user who forgot to log in, you'll need to create an account to upload images. jcgoble3 (talk) 00:22, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok, thanks! I will start working on the images and hopefully have them up by Friday. But also, i might have trouble adding the full ride image to wiki because it would affect the current infobox picture. Do you know how to get around this problem?--Dom497 (talk) 00:33, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Don't click "Upload a new version" on the image page. Upload your version under a new filename. If you go to commons:Commons:Upload and click on "It is a derivative work of one or several files from Commons", that seems to take you to a step-by-step wizard that should make things fairly easy. jcgoble3 (talk) 00:46, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
Done Uploaded and added pictures to the WindSeeker article. Thanks for letting be use your photos!--Dom497 (talk) 21:04, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Windseeker at night

Hello (again), I was just thinking that because your going to CP in a few days, (not saying you have to but.....) if you can and stay at the park late enough, try taking a shot of windseeker in action at night and upload it to wiki/flickr so I (or you) can add it to the windseeker page.--Dom497 (talk) 01:33, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

I already plan to get that shot. I'm actually going to be there for almost five days (it's my main vacation for the year), so I'll have plenty of chances to get some good shots. I won't be on Wikipedia much, if at all, during that time, so don't look for the photos any earlier than the weekend of the 25th and 26th. :) jcgoble3 (talk) 01:52, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Ok. Just an FYI your probably going to have to upload and add them to the article because on the 30th to the 14th of July, I'm heading off to Florida. I'll be busy in the days before I leave so I may not be able to take a look at the photos for a while.--Dom497 (talk) 11:50, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
OK, no problem. jcgoble3 (talk) 18:50, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
THIS MESSAGE IS FROM Dom497. Sorry I was too lazy to sign in but just wanted to tell you that the night time picutre i added to the WS page is not me looking for picutres of windseeker at night before you could take the pictures at CP. I came across this picture and had to add it (Still take the night shots). Thanks!!!--65.92.232.98 (talk) 14:31, 19 June 2011 (UTC) (or Dom497)
I added a couple of photos to the article (one to replace the non-free image in the infobox, and a close-up of the dampers). I was unfortunately unable to get a remotely decent night shot; my camera was acting up Monday night when I first tried to get the shot, and it closed due to high winds Tuesday afternoon and remained closed the rest of the week as the winds continued. With it closed, they didn't bother lighting it up. Since KI's version is now open, I'll try to get a night shot there the next time I go down there (I haven't picked a date yet, but it will probably be sometime this week). jcgoble3 (talk) 23:02, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
No surprised that the ride wasn't open. The winds, swings moving around and even swings hitting people at wonderland (apparently)... this ride might just have an interesting future... that is if the problems don't get fixed!--Dom497 (talk) 20:33, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Need some help

As I am leaving for a family trip from June 30, 2011 to July 13, 2011, please find a reference for the edit i made on Canada's Wonderland's History on the WindSeeker page. I was watching the show this morning and saw what happened. But when i tried searching up what happened earlier in the day (i searched it up a couple of hours later) i couldn't find anything. Please try to find a reference as i couldn't find any and knowing that saying "i saw it on tv" is not a refrence Wikipedia accepts. Please do not also delete the edit as i promise that it is true. (This message has also been posted to Themeparkgc's talk page as well... so maybe you guys could work together). Thanks!!!--Dom497 (talk) 18:25, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

My understanding is that "I saw it on TV" was precisely what {{Cite episode}} was for, so I've cited it using that template with the information provided. If I got anything wrong in the citation, please feel free to correct it (in particular, if that show gives unique names to each episode, that episode's name should go in the "title" field). jcgoble3 (talk) 19:50, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

Windseeker

These are the 3 pictures that we want to add to the article:

Thanks! :) Giggett (talk) 17:36, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

#10 is uploaded at File:Kings Island WindSeeker at Night.jpg. The other two will be up in a little bit. BTW, I fixed the licensing of the Flickr versions; I forgot to add the free license there. *slaps self on forehead* Anyway, licensing should be in order now. I'll get cracking on the other two. jcgoble3 (talk) 18:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
#12 is now at File:Kings Island WindSeeker at Night 2.jpg. The one of the sign should be up in a few minutes. jcgoble3 (talk) 18:17, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
The sign is now at File:Kings Island WindSeeker Sign at Night.jpg and has been placed in the article as requested. jcgoble3 (talk) 18:25, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Okay thank you so much :D Giggett (talk) 18:28, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Photographer's Barnstar
Most of the pictures on the WindSeeker page are all of yours. If you never took these pictures, who knows what the article would have looked like today!!! Dom497 (talk) 13:11, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank you! I don't consider myself to even be a "serious amateur", and I just have a cheap point-and-shoot camera, not the fancy DSLRs that most of the best photographers around here have, but I'm glad my photos are of use to the project. jcgoble3 (talk) 15:18, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Hi Thanks for helping out with Ashraf Ghori's article. Please feel free to suggest things to improve it.

Thanks JackBridgestone (talk) 18:07, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Ah, OK. It took me ten minutes to figure this out. All I did was remove an unneeded template as part of routine maintenance. I have very little knowledge of what goes into writing an article, so I probably won't be able to help you there. But thanks anyway. jcgoble3 (talk) 21:51, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

reference errors

i have undone your edit about the clarification of the lighting at knotts as you linked it to the CP review.--Dom497 (talk) 16:09, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, that was a simple copy-and-paste fail. I fixed it; should be good now. jcgoble3 (talk) 16:13, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

No more youtube refrences

Hey just wanted to let you know that I was able to delete and replace all of the youtube references on the Windseeker article.--Dom497 (talk) 19:41, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

WindSeeker Copy Edit

Hello, just wanted to ask you that because you are a Copy Edit member, if you were willing to take a look at the WindSeeker article and tell me what could use improvement. And also, after I believe the article has reached a certain "standard" i will nominate it for FA status. Let me know if you are willing to review the article ASAP. Thanks!!!--Dom497 (talk) 22:53, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Mostly done, but as I noted on the GOCE request page, I've asked for a more experienced and completely uninvolved GOCE member to look over it, as I've been looking at the text for a few months now and could easily miss something simple that someone looking at it for the first time would catch immediately. jcgoble3 (talk) 02:13, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Copy Edit please!!!

Im pretty sure you've never read this article (maybe you have) but can you copy edit the Canada's Wonderland article? Thank's!!!--Dom497 (talk) 18:44, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

After seeing how much Diannaa did to WindSeeker after I ran through it, it's pretty obvious that I'm not a very good copy-editor, so I've decided to resign from the GOCE at least for now. I would recommend seeing what comes of your listing on the GOCE request page; you'll almost certainly get a better and more experienced copy-editor that way. :) jcgoble3 (talk) 19:19, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Canada's Wonderland GA review

First, you are totally right about the photo on the CW article. More importantly...this review isn't even complete. The message he mentioned on my talk page was that he stopped because of the issues he found. The review summary has 4 question marks which means that he either needed a second opinion or didn't finish the review. A review shouldn't be stopped half way through just because of the issues he found... it should be completed no matter what. Please send back to me if you support this.--Dom497 (talk) 18:45, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Though I have no experience with GA reviewing, according to Wikipedia:Reviewing_good_articles#First_things_to_look_for it is entirely appropriate to quick-fail an article with only a partial review if that partial review reveals serious problems. I won't comment on whether such problems are present (as I said, I have no experience in this stuff), but if serious problems are quickly found, a full review is not necessary to quick-fail it. jcgoble3 (talk) 19:53, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. JORGENEV 04:24, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

No problem. jcgoble3 (talk) 04:32, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Minor barnstar
Although this is a Minor Barnstar, thanks so much for fixing my mistakes on the the Fast Lane image I made!!! Dom497 (talk) 18:56, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

No problem. Always happy to help. jcgoble3 (talk) 20:30, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Hello again!!!

Hello, just found this image. You think it could replace the current image in the 'Rider Experience' section of the WindSeeker article???--Dom497 (talk) 20:05, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Good find! The only thing I have against that image is the distortion, but it definitely does a better job of showcasing the view that riders get. I would say go for it, but keep an eye out for a non-distorted shot as well. jcgoble3 (talk) 20:27, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Ok... thanks!!! I'll upload once I get a chance.--Dom497 (talk) 21:02, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

WindSeeker changes?

Hello, apparently CW's WindSeeker has added the dampers that Knott's uses (I can't go to the park for the rest of the season so I'm working on finding out if its true). I was just wondering if the Kings Island model has changed their dampers as well. Thanks!--Dom497 (talk) 01:40, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

The last time I was there was September 23 and I didn't pay any attention to that. Unfortunately, I don't plan on making another trip to KI until next year, and the webcam (bottom) is too far away and too zoomed out to tell from looking at it. Sorry I couldn't help. jcgoble3 (talk) 02:24, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
With the magic of being able to zoom in on a website with a mobile device, it allowed me to take a really close look at the swings. At the time, the swings were at the top of the tower and as I zoomed in a grey line could be seen around the swings (possible the new dampers). I will investigate a bit more into this as soon as I get a chance.--Dom497 (talk) 18:44, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
WAIT!!! I forgot... when I was looking at the webcam this morning, the swings were at the top but not spinning. When I took a look right now....it seems like there are trucks around the bottom of the ride with no on the ride..... maybe they are putting them on now???--Dom497 (talk) 18:47, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
We'll have to wait and see. Keep in mind that KI is closed today (hence why no one is on the ride), so those trucks could just be for general maintenance. jcgoble3 (talk) 19:04, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Forgot that its closed on weekdays now.--Dom497 (talk) 19:37, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks!!!

Just thought it would be best just to let you know that I have reached "the light at the end of the tunnel". I just wanted to thank you for all the contributions to the WindSeeker article (photos etc...) and all the other things we both edited. I hope you continue on and keep enjoying what you do. Again, thanks for everything!!!!--Dom497 (talk) 21:04, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Re:Welcome Cal Jedi

Hey, thanks for the welcome. I decided I might as well join here, too, since I've been editing Wookieepedia for so long. :P Cal Jedi (talk) 04:47, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
