A question about code...

Hey, is there a list of some sort showing programming code that I could find? ♣ Klptyzm Chat wit me § Contributions03:48, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I know that sounded vague, but I noticed that you have some code on your page that I don't know. I was really wondering how you know some of the "wikicode?" ♣ Klptyzm Chat wit me § Contributions03:52, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for that. Hesperian 04:40, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Indian Ocean vandal

Dont we have the blatant vandal thing anymore - four edits all vandalism - surely there's a thing for that sort - have come across a couple of 4 in a rowers today - sigh SatuSuro 06:26, 30 January 2007 (UTC) (from my talk page)

I was trying to figure that out myself, but with the new warning templates, they've separated test and vandal warnings. Actually, looking at {{uw-vandalism4im}}, that one seems to be as close to the old BV as you can get. Sure, NOW I find it after needing it once or twice tonight. =P Tony Fox (arf!) 06:30, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Suharto

Perhaps you should explain what you mean in plain words rather talking in riddles. I won't be offended. Do you object to me moving the article? Both the Indonesian Wikipedia and the Javanese Wikipedia call him Soeharto, not Haj Mohammed Soeharto. (I don't why they prefer Soeharto to Suharto, which is clearly the current official spelling - I am currently in Indonesia, and I asked). Adam 09:52, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I really don't know what you mean. This is a simple question: what is the man's name? All the sources I have seen say his name is Suharto, and that he only uses "Haj Mohammed" when he wants to show what a good Muslim he is. I believe Sukarno likewise was Achmed Sukarno when it suited him, although that wasn't his name either. The article should call him by his correct name in its current official spelling, which is Suharto. Adam 10:17, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

hmm - i don't have particularly strong views on these issues (and there is more than one issue). Firstly, I am glad to see dropping of the Islamic titles. I don't think they were representative, and yes, probably were used from time to time for political advantage (and I won't speculate on the motives on whatever editor originally added them, although I have my suspicions it may not have been motivated by a search for boring encyclopedia factual representative accurate emphasis).
As for Soeharto vs. Suharto - i really don't know. I would tend to lean towards Suharto as most (maybe even all??) of my texts use that form (even though the same texts might use 'soe' for other people - which makes me think some kind of thinking went into each name). None of that is probably much help. Merbabu 14:01, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Rac fleming

Cheers for that I will sign up. Re the top 10 mountains - yeah it's on my list of things to do! (which keeps growing!!) I tend to get distracted and start new articles before I have finished my old ones - a habit I have decided needs to be new year resolutioned out. re the user page - it tends to be my escape when I am reaching high levels of wiki-frustration, so yeah, it is a bit long... Take care.Rac fleming 10:00 (GMT), 30 January, 2007.

Vandalism templates

There's a handy box at WP:VAND which gives code snippets for the new warning templates. Personally, I tend to not bother with anonymous users unless they're unusually persistent. Orpheus 10:13, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome! + more

Hi SatuSuro,
I was kind of hoping to lurk around until I made my hundredth 'from it's to its' m before I got told what pages that I might find helpful; but, thank you indeed for the much appreciated welcome.
As for the Tasman Highway, weeeelll, I have driven down it a few times from Cambridge Airport back to Hobart...
And as for the (for example) someonethinks wikipedia is a valid secondary source (but prolly only inadvertantly - ctrl+u to see the wikipedia ref)... mmm... <rant>rant about the teh [sic] recent appointments to, and especially of teh appointment of the CJ, of the HC of Ausralia, now thought better of </rant>.
Anyways. Googling "can I quote you on all that its funny! (my post grad thing was so obscure I never finished it, sigh )" yields "Did you mean: 'Can I quote you on all that? It's funny! (my post-grad thing was so obscure I never finished it <sigh>.' )"
In short: Thanks! And quote my wiki-silliness wherever you want to.

Subandrio

I don't speak Indonesian, so I can't take part in that discussion. I agree that Indonesians don't seem to have made up their minds which spelling they want to use. My visa, for example, refers to Soekarno-Hatta Airport. My understanding, however, is that that the "u" spelling is the official and correct one (see Differences between Malay and Indonesian), and has been since 1947. So the Indonesian Wikipedia is wrong when it titles articles Soekarno and Soeharto. In any case, this is the English Wikipedia, and needs to follow English usage. I have never seen Soebandrio spelled like that in an English source - every source I have spells it Subandrio. Adam 01:37, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

A question: why is it Yogyakarta and not Jogjakarta? Everyone calls it "Jogja" and I can't hear any difference in the spoken sounds. Adam 01:43, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes I was there, and I never heard anyone pronounce it "Yogya", always "Jogja" - are you saying it is pronounced differently in Bahasa and Javanese? Adam 02:10, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I reckon you two have rocks in your head jumping on Necrothesp like that. When I moved the article from "Dick Robson" to "Richard Robson", I didn't bother altering the article text from "Dick". So when Necrothesp came across the article, he noticed that it referred to "Dick" throughout, so moved it to "Dick Robson". There's no reason to suppose that Necrothesp knew of the discussion between us, which has long been buried in our talk archives. Probably he didn't even look at the article history to see that it had been previously moved. I really can't fault him. So the sarcastic award as an opening gambit seems pretty unfair to me. Thank you for trying to assist, you might as well know that I have been editing Wikipedia since 2001, and I have nil interest in being engaged in edit wars which is why I have been asking Merbabu to explain what he needed clarification on. Without his feedback I can only assume he is probably objecting to something which looks odd to a person with an Indonesian education.

You might be able to help; is there anything in my entry which is generally unknown? I thought Operation Mandala was well known, monuments have been built and celebrations held in honor of the victory over the Papuans.58.107.15.245 07:52, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

I was NOT talking about Merbabu's "rights" to delete other people's content ; I was talking about his and your refusal to explain what to his mind required explicit citation. I only stated what is common and undisputed knowledge. That fact is that the entire article and everything you have ever written has been without proper citation - over 90% of Wikipedia is without citation of its claims, that is the nature of Wikipedia and the reason it can grow faster than professional publications. If you are unfamiliar with the subject, then don't write about it. But if you do have an interest and think there is something in error - it is normal to use the discussion page before "REVERTING" other people's work.58.107.15.245 01:39, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't understand the indonesia discussion at all - it sounds like Merbabu has reverted an edit theanon did becasue it did'nt have a citation.

Disgreements like this get very complicated to outsiders like me when the discussion is held over several pages. Can I suggest that someone summarises the issues and what the disagreement is about on the article talk page. This needs to be in neutral and non-emotive language. —Moondyne 08:45, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

All discussion has been transferred to the subject article talk page - and I will not respond to anything further on this page re this subject SatuSuro 09:17, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

PLace v Chase

Since Chase fronts onto Place and that chase is only a building where those previously in the place of chase should also be on place or stand alone in there rightful place. But then to place a merge of chase into place wouldnt be out of place either. Gnangarra 14:22, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

So place and chase arent out of place in their current place, though if one was to place a tag of disgrace at either place then merge of chase to place should take place. Gnangarra 14:28, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
What he said. —Moondyne 14:29, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
(buries head in sand a waiting rain), either but since we have the place and chase they should stay in place and be improved unless such a place (probably the chase in this case) becomes disgraced. Gnangarra 14:42, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, if there's a choice, the location (Place) should take precedence, I think. Orderinchaos78 10:10, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I've been bold and moved Robert Powell (actor) back to Robert Powell. New article Robert Powell (author) is, on a notability scale about 1/100th of the actor and there's about 100 incoming links which'd otherwise need fixing. —Moondyne 04:02, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

George Seddon is undoubtedly article worthy. Powell on the other hand is only marginal notable. He (Powell) needs some refs which refer to him and explain his importance in the world - awards etc., and not general book reviews. —Moondyne 05:13, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

On another note, I've noticed you type a lot of your warnings up by hand. Some people prefer that, but you may not be aware of Wikipedia:Template_messages/User_talk_namespace, which is good for quick warnings when you're doing it on a regular basis. -- Longhair\talk 23:15, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Biogeographic regions

They're IBRA [4] boundaries. I could answer your "from whose perspective" question by saying "Department of Environment and Water Resources, Australian Government", but I suspect your question was meant to be rather more sophisticated than that.

In brief, John Stanley Beard published the WA ones in 1980 as "phytogeographic regions" (i.e. vegetation community boundaries) using data from the Vegetation Survey of Western Australia. Later on he realised that vegetation grows in soil and in a climate, and provides habitat for animals, so plants and animals and geology and climate are all intertwingled. That is, whether you map geology/climate, vegetation or fauna, you'll end up with basically the same map. So after 1984 they were spruiked as general "natural regions" rather than vegetation-specific.

In the 2000s, it was decided that Australia needed a biogeographic regionalisation for the whole country. They grabbed a state regionalisation from each state (Beard's from WA), fiddled a bit at the state boundaries to make the regions line up, and published it as the "Interim Biogeographical Regionalisation of Australia" (IBRA). IBRA is now up to Version 6.1, and removal of the word "Interim" is long overdue.

These days, IBRA gets used a lot. e.g. the National Reserve System for Australia is using it to identify priority areas for establishment of reserves. They don't ever again want to see the situation like in the wheatbelt where virtually 100% of certain vegetation communities has been cleared away and lost forever, so they are aiming to reserve a reasonable amount of native vegetation in each IBRA region.

ISA

Not yet. But I must admit I've softened a little on the issue and may have overreacted a bit when I saw the three new ones appear. Afte investigation, it seems that there's LOTS of school templates in active use and arguing that there's too many of them on that basis alone would be futile. However, the ISA one in particular, is too vague. The AC article is at WP:FAC at the moment and copping a hiding so I may leave everything till that settles so as to be not too unkind to the editor. —Moondyne 04:56, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Re: Concern

Okay, I think I see your point, but I'm not sure I agree. The logging protesters weren't engaged in conservation? Sure they were, at the grassroots. The Great Walk people weren't engaged in conservation? Sure they were - raising awareness of conservation issues is an important part of conservation. Often these grassroots groups are more important to conservation than the administrative bodies that take credit for the outcomes.

I do think that the conservation category should eventually be subcategorised by topic; e.g. environmental conservation versus heritage conservation. But that's a different kettle of fish.

On another note, I object to the hijacking of the word "environment". Beekeepers are just as environmental as bushwalkers are just as environmental as logging companies are just as environmental as feral conservationists are just as environmental as eco-tourism companies. But "environment" has unfortunately been co-opted to refer specifically to conservation of the environment. On those grounds, I would rename the "Environmental organisations" category to "Conservation organisations in Australia" or "Environmental conservation organisations in Australia".

Hesperian 01:58, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, this is a dilly of a pickle! In my experience, when two reasonably intelligent and well-informed people disagree so utterly, it usually means there's some deeper truth being missed, and both sides are wrong. They still use that!! Out past Norseman at one of those little towns where it changes, they are 45 minutes ahead of us. There's a sign on the road telling you that it's changed. DanielT5 12:31, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
I found this from a cryptic comment on User talk:Longhair. What is the exact issue? I suggest you talk to User:Gwil and see Time in Australia. Gwil is on the timezone file mailing list[6] that maintains the info for all computer timezone info. --Scott Davis Talk 22:16, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Back

hmmm - i wish i was still away. House and beach were superb. We are thinking at least 10 days next time though. I only really got into the 'zone' yesterday as one of my mates had to leave early. He is nice but highly strung, and it was nice once he'd left. ha ha. but weather was superb. I read a few chapters from a few old INdonesian books (after my nagging and needy friend left). Hopefully it can result in a few WP additions, after I trawl thru 7 days of watchlist. lol Merbabu 07:33, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

OK, I will look out for your e-mail. In the meantime, i need to look into the saga of Sarah being reported to the US govt by the "professor" for "internet abuse" - lol.Merbabu 07:45, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing. It's just that there are hundreds of Lonely Planet books, and there's very little to say about any of them beyond what is in the Lonely Planet and Guide book articles. Indonesia (Guidebook) is the only article on an individual Lonely Planet guidebook. Why is this book notable? Why is it more notable than the other Lonely Planet guidebooks? Will it ever be more than a stub? --Crocodile Punter 14:22, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

It sounds like the Lonely Planet guide to Indonesia is an important source for Indonesian articles you are working on. But the book can still be cited without having a dedicated wikipedia article. If you feel a wikilink is necessary, why not link to Lonely Planet? I understand that the book has a tremendous impact on visitors to Indonesia (and what they choose to spend their money on), but that is true of every guidebook on every country. The studies you mentioned regarding the impact of guidebooks would be a tremendous addition to the guide book article, and would give a much clearer picture of the economic impact of these books -- wouldn't it be better to discuss the studies there, where more readers would benefit from the information, rather than in an individual book's page?
I'm a die-hard inclusionist, who almost always says "keep" in AfD discussions, but the prospect of thousands of articles on every book published by Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Frommers, Fodors, Let's Go, or Footprint, each with just the authors and table of contents, is mind-boggling. I just can't see how any of these books satisfy the criteria in WP:BK. --Crocodile Punter 09:51, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
There is really no need to be so hostile. I would expect someone who has contributed as much to wikipedia as you have to understand the importance of civility. You have not stated why you feel this book satisfies the criteria in WP:BK, simply that you want to have the article, and that you have contributed greatly to wikipedia.
If you feel so strongly about it, that's fine. I will not pursue the issue further, since it is not something that is important to me. Feel free to remove the notability tag.
One a separate note, your research on Indonesian tourism sounds very interesting. Is it available on the web? If not I look forward to reading about it when you post information from it on Wikipedia. Please drop me a note on my talk page at that time so I can check it out. --Crocodile Punter 10:33, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
No worries, apology accepted. I hope I didn't cause you undue stress. Good luck with your work on the Indonesian tourism articles! --Crocodile Punter 10:44, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

OGF (Ossume Good Faith?)

Ah, someone to talk to, just as I was finishing up for the night. Gosh its been quiet around here this evening!

Thanks for that. Methinks I'll have to add the new draft to the OGF category, depending on how much of it is OGF according to those websites.

Hesperian 12:51, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, already got that one in further reading. Hesperian 12:59, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again, I'm off! TTY tomorrow I guess. Hesperian 13:03, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

ISSN

Re: [7], want to point me to an example, i.e. the article ISSNs aren't working in? Keesiewonder talk 03:21, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

It is 10:30 pm here now. I'm in the Eastern USA. I'll look at your maps in the morning with coffee. The ISSNs I know are 8 digits separated by a hyphen ... i.e. {{ISSN|1087-0156}} which displays as ISSN 1087-0156. Keesiewonder talk 03:34, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

No worries! And, you are not a nuissance!!!! I'll get my ISSN->ISBN converter out in the morning ... Besides, my eyes are not what they used to be either. Keesiewonder talk 03:50, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Which Robert Cribb book? I have Gangsters and Revolutionaries, but yes, my current activities are taking a long time. But i didn't really want to just copy and paste someone elses. Merbabu 14:17, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Bickley, Western Australia

Hey there. Hope things are all good? I was hoping you could do me a favour? With me not being from here and all - I went to the Dam today for a trip and added some info and a pic to the suburb art: Bickley, Western Australia. But, I can't figure out if the dam is actually in the suburb going by google earth, seems Carmel is in the way. Whats your take? Cheers SeanMack 14:12, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Instead I removed most if the POV. Will watch closely. Do you know of her? —Moondyne 06:57, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
The article image will need a source. Gnangarra 08:32, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Late thank you for that revert. It have been a while last time somebody vandalised my user page. That one was Polish and wrote I am faggot :). Thanks. - Darwinek 09:00, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem for that :). I get it :). Actually vandals are funny. A few months ago one Hungarian called me "communist puppet" etc. LOL :). - Darwinek 09:07, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

SELF awarded

Awarded to those who challenge the geographically challenged issues that face Tasmanian and Western Australia articles

For feeling challenged by 'tothersiders' of Bickley and Carmel (too far south from here- thats where the observatory and the carmel chocolate factory and the big rose place at the top of welshpool road are...) in response to a sean mack question - I award myself the geograpically challenged award (thanks hesp...) User:Nishkid64/StatusChange2 use "..|OMG or online" or ...|OMG2 or offline theres also other tags just look at the code for the page for the others Gnangarra 12:23, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Och - you're being hard on yourself! If by the top right thing you meant the coordinate thingy - anywhere on the page you drop on {{CoorHeader|31|59|60|S|116|4|46|E|type:XXX|region:AU}} where XXX is a defined type. I have a tool within Google Earth that creates a template using the lat and long of wherever you have centred on google earth, I then just changed the name of the template. I got addicted to doing that for a while and had been in remission until recently... I originally found the tool download on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Geographical_coordinates. Cheers SeanMack 13:12, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Gary Lucas

Another shocker. Thanks for the heads up. —Moondyne 23:31, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Conservation

What if we created a Category:Conservation activism in Western Australia and made it a subcategory of Category:Conservation in Western Australia? Then people and organisations stuck in the former category would be assumed to be conservation activists rather than conservationists. Hesperian 00:10, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

What if we had a Category:Heritage conservation activism in Western Australia and a [[:Category:Natural conservation activism in .. and a ... Nah, forget it. —Moondyne 00:21, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Pretty soon we're going to need a Category:Water conservation in Western Australia subcat too. Or maybe Category:Resource conservation in Western Australia to capture the energy restrictions. ;-) Hesperian 01:14, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

I am very sorry - but in my conceptualisation of the issue and despite popular usage conservation groups - I would personally like to see a separation of the activism versus the actual conservation - to make a distinction - but if there is a good check elsewhere in wikipedia as how either other states or projects have dealt with it (unless its the usual band of 11 year old american school students...) I would be only too pleased to concede to some crappy category.. and offer the first two rounds next meetup if there is strong evidence of the rest of wikipedia conflating activism with the act of conservation... SatuSuro 02:02, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

What do you have against 11 year old american school students? Our Pokémon characters coverage is second to none. If you continue these unprovoked attacks and continual assumption of bad faith you may find yourself in a lot of trouble sir. —Moondyne 03:25, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
