British Crimean War Medal

Hello there. Firstly, many thanks for your contributions to the above article - always nice to see someone take an interest in the area of campaign medals. I note that you recently moved this page from its old location at Crimea Medal to British Crimean War Medal. The general convention for medals is to use the actual medal name, with a national disambigator if the medal name is shared between countries (eg XXX Medal (United Kindgom), etc). I take it that you had the Ottoman Crimean medal in mind when making this move, but in this case the official name of the UK medal is the 'Crimea Medal' (which, to the best of my knowledge, is not a shared name) - the page move really tends to cloud the whole issue.

As for your initial creation of a separate article under the misspelling "Charlie Caroli" - don't worry about it. If you make that sort of mistake again, you don't need to request that your version be deleted; just add the content to the earlier article (which you did), and change the new version into a redirect. Gennaro Rubino

Wow, that's fascinating. If you could let her know that I am currently doing research on Rubino, I would love to hear from her. He is a figure of some intrigue due to the unsettled mystery of his true loyalties. He claimed to be allied with the anarchists, but worked for the Italian secret service to spy on them (although perhaps as a double agent). Also, your student may be unaware of the article recently published about Rubino since it was published in a very obscure Italian journal (devoted to the history of the city Rubino was born in). I would certainly love to trade a translation of the journal article for information about Rubino's family and perhaps even his life after prison. I will send you my email address and snail mail address and perhaps you could pass them along to her. I would be very glad to hear from her or even her grandmother (if she is still alive). No, unfortunately I haven't heard anything from the family yet. Thanks for passing along the date and place of death. It's good to know that at least :) If you talk to your student again, perhaps you could ask if the family knows Rubino's date of birth as well. Finally received the Italian journal with the article about Rubino. The article is 8 pages long (more than I was expecting) and even includes a photo of him (which I have added to the article). Now I just have to find someone who knows Italian! I still haven't heard from the family, but if you see your student again, you should let her know that I would be happy to send them a copy of the article (or a translation thereof). Thanks for the messages. Do you mean that you have an actual obituary from 1966, or are you merely saying that Wikipedia articles state (without giving a reliable source) that it was 1966? Because I have not seen anything on Wikipedia that gives a source, whereas both the G&S Archive AND the G&S discography give a date of 1965, also without any citations. I have received several responses now, and everyone agrees that it was 1966. We cite a Times article from 1966, and I suspect that that article gives the info. Also, I have been referred to a G&S Journal cite that I have now added to the articles, and I changed the dates in The Zoo article to 1966, so now all the dates agree. Thanks for catching this! Mart Sander again

He is back. Please note his response regarding the images. Has he addressed your concern about them? If so, how do we retrieve them? Also, what do you think about the changes to the article? I tried to explain to him about the need for independent citations, but I have no way of reviewing the new reference that he has provided in Estonian - It is not obvious that it supports the fact for which he has cited it. Also, we have long been struggling with how to support his claim that he sang with the Estonian National Opera. To turn all the refs into proper <ref> format with a description of the article's author, title and date (and page numbers, where relevant), like I did at Oudin's article. But you're right: it's not really that important. Frankly, I'd rather that you dug up more refs for Blackmore, since I still think he's probably not notable (having essentially had an understudy career), and shouldn't have an article - He's certainly of interest to D'OC fans, but as someone like O'Mara shows, Blackmore's career was not notable per WP:NOTE. Since the WhoWasWho website is so excellent, it makes minor members of the D'OC seem to be much more notable than they really are, by giving all the gorey details of their careers there. The Whitechapel Murders

I have tried to make sense of the whole thing at The Whitechapel Murders (1888-91) by just listing the facts and not engaging in Ripperologist flights of fancy about who Jack the Ripper was or how many people he killed (the Ripperologist's precious 'canonical five') or whether he leaped into the Thames after the Kelly murder or was committed to an asylum etc etc. The Ripper article is in the process of being replaced by a better one but we agreed on the talk page there that as not all the Whitechapel murders could be ascribed to JTR that a seperate article should deal with the eleven Whitechapel murders listed in the Metropolitan Police file on the case, whether or not they were commited by the legendary Ripper. Suspected DreamGuy sockpuppet

Hi there. You said "If I'm correct it is at least a violation of code B." If this is right, then it shouldn't be too hard to make the request. Just set up the request like last time, but you need to include a link to the ArbCom remedy in question, and then a link to the actual edits, or a few of them if it's a lot, (in diff form) that would be a violation of that remedy if it is indeed DreamGuy that made those edits. Finally, a short explanation in words as to why you suspect it is a sockpuppet (how is the behavior similar?) would be nice. Hi, saw the new request, and recommend a couple formatting tweaks:

• Move the new request to the top of the page, above the archive line
• As Dmcdevit said above, be sure to include a link to the ArbCom page
• Try to give a couple specific diffs that say, "Look what the sockpuppet did," and "see how this is similar to what DreamGuy did." Just editing the same pages isn't necessarily proof.

• In your comment on the CheckUser page, add verbiage like, "DreamGuy is currently under ArbCom sanctions (Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/DreamGuy 2), and it is my belief that he is using alternate accounts as a way of avoiding the sanctions." Basically, you need to write a report from the assumption that whichever clerk is reviewing the report, that they may have never heard of DreamGuy in their lives, have no idea who's in the right or wrong, and have no idea that there was ever any kind of ArbCom case. I suspect this might become less of a problem now. He has been prohibited from editing from anything other than a single account. I'm not sure you are aware of it, but 1) you aren't an admin either, 2) admins aren't in charge of content, 3) you don't just get to say you aren't done with something and demand nobody else touch it, 4) you don't have to nominate something for deletion if it's a redirect to an article that already fully covers a topic, 5) your comments about you supposedly knowing Wikipedia policy and so forth and that you demand I not do things are highly incivil, 6) false reports for revenge purposes don't get you anywhere.

Whitechapel Murder Victims

Hi Jack. Just advert to the fact that a lot of the separate articles on the Whitechapel murder victims in the wikipedia are very shoddy indeed. My guess is that those who have tried to improve them in the past four years get attacked by a mystery assailant and expire whilst waiting for the impotent guardians of law and order to arrive on the scene, thus leaving said articles in said shoddy state. Dorset Street

Dorset Street used to have a wikipedia entry but some editors had it deleted as 'non-notable' whilst my back was turned...I recently created Flower and Dean Street which nobody seems to have noticed yet. In the past some wicked editors attempted to have my Wormwood Street deleted but fortunately I was informed about this and managed to save it in time. Some editors have odd ideas about notability, judging what is notable by the criterion of their own ignorance about the subject. tools used in article writing

Hi Jack, What tools are you using to assist with article creation? I have tried using a text editor & Open Office but I'm having difficulty when attempting to copy & paste into Wikipedia's edit box...wordwrapping goes away for some reason no matter what I try and I end up with a badly formatted page. Hi, this is an intriguing picture, and its being used on the Josephus article; however at the moment the image page does not really give enough information to verify it, at least not easily. The page gives two pieces of info, that it was "Scanned from a copy of Josephus' 'The Jewish War' dated 1888" - and, added later by User:Briangotts, "For identification with Josephus, see Les Dossiers d' Archéologie, 2001" - Another editor pointed out that the first bit "could apply to any of multiple sources: Flavii Josephi opera edidit et apparatu critico instruxit Benedictus Niese, (6 vols., Berlin, large version 1887-94 or small version, text only, 1888-95) or an edition by Naber (6 vols., Leipsic, 1888-96)." - The second bit is equally (if not more) ambiguous, as the reference Les Dossiers d' Archéologie, 2001 might refer to any of around 150 articles published in 9 or 10 volumes that year. Hi Jack. For some odd reason your article was deleted by speedy deletion saying something about copyright infringement. Obviously they're unaware that nobody has any copyright to this. Luckilly I was in middle of editing when this was deleted so I was able to save its content and create a new article Prutah (coin) which will have to be changed back to Prutah after notifying its deleter as an error. As you know that the first Yehud coin was found quite recently, about a half century ago due to its small size, and has the least scholarly studies done of all ancient Jewish coins. Thanks for the photo. I have always thought that Shishak sacked Jerusalem because Pharaoh's daughter and Solomon did not produce an heir for the throne and the people rebelled against Rehoboam partially because of her upkeep. If this was not his daughter then it would have been a sister or cousin. Pharaoh's huge dowry of the City of Gezer had greater expectations than simply marrying off a daughter. An alliance through marriage and a ruling heir are implied...it turned out to be a disappointment for Pharaoh and Egypt..not making an argument for inclusion into the article, just a personal observation...I appreciate the article.

I have always believed the scripture literally when it says he took everything which is repeated twice for emphasis. Chronicles is less reliable or misleading in its references because it was written well after the exile and not in a time when they actually had firsthand knowledge. Kings had contemporary writers to the Sacking of Jerusalem. I believe people seek something that disappeared, at His will, long ago. Tracing board

There is a problem with your image of the Masonic tracing board. I gather that your rational for inclusion is that you took the picture of it... that works for most photographs, but does not work for photographs of other images, which may be under copywrite themselves... Image of Alfred Tennyson Dickens

Hi, I am writing to you from the E.O. Hoppé Estate Collection, where I am the chief archivist. I would like to let you know that the head and shoulders profile image you have used of Alfred Tennyson Dickens is a photograph by E.O. Hoppé, taken in 1911. We have this negative in our archive. Since Hoppé did not die until the 1970's, the image is actually still under copyright, which is held by this estate. We don't mind images being used if they are credited and the quality is good, so long as it is for an educational purpose such as this. I am new to Wikipedia, but thought it was time I joined as I see a lot of Hoppé images here without credit given.... Gads Hill

I see you are putting a lot of work into Gad's Hill. This article has been very poor and littered with POVs in the past- its good to see that it is getting a little TLC. I am loathe to do to much editing here as I know the husband of one of the governors and have worked in the past with members of their staff. I see that the way forward is to try and bring it into line with other school articles while including the Dicken's connection. I read their web site- some of the pages that fail to render in Firefox. The PDF download of the students handbook is useful [4]- though the stats need to be verified by an external source.

Our page needs to be improved by getting rid of vague statements- almost none of the Traditions section is supported by references. Sentences like There are also many daily extracurricular activities need to be removed or expanded.

Back to references, it is generally better to use the Citation templates.

Back to stats. How many kids did take the 2007 exam- this is relevant. There is a scam where you remove the kids who are likely to fail from the roll to increase the stats- by stating 17, 18, 19 etc you are proving that the school did not resort to this scam. Local knowledge suggests that they do a good job with the kids they look after but the article does not prove this without that stat. Have you got access to a verifiable source.

There seems to be some disquiet in the village about the proposed building works- this could be interesting to investigate further.

I love the Stage Beauty site. The table of performances for Victoria is very interesting, and several have a G&S connection.

• 1st Feb, 1887, Sweet Hearts Mr. and Mrs. Kendal -- Sweethearts (play) is a Gilbert play that the Kendals played frequently and, for some time, without authorization by Gilbert.
• 6th March, 1891 The Gondoliers Savoy Theatre Co. Of course this was D'Oyly Carte.
• 17th Mar, 1891 A Pair of Spectacles was by Sydney Grundy, one of Sullivan's collaborators, and Sir John Hare was a longtime friend of Gilbert's
• 4th Sep, 1891 The Mikado D'Oyly Carte Opera Co. Balmoral Interesting that the Queen should call for two G&S operas in one year, and then not again.

Thanks, Jack. It made no sense to have an article on Royal Variety Performance and no article on Royal Command Performance. I wish I could find a reference for the history of command performances on the European continent. I set up a disambiguation page, as it appears that there are several films, books and other things called "command performance". -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:29, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

For Europe, I don't think we need a thorough discussion for each country, but there should be at least some acknowledgement in the article that there have been command performances in France, Germany, Vienna, etc. Otherwise, it looks like command performances only happen in England. My google search showed some examples of things that *mentioned* a command performance in a European capital, but nothing that gave any real discussion. I know there must be something out there that says they take place through out Europe, but I haven't seen it. Coenwulf's coinage

I've reverted your change to Coenwulf of Mercia as I can't find a source that supports it. Do you have something we can use? I looked at this, but it only lists a series of objects that several funds helped with, one of which is the Friends of the British Museum. I don't think that's specific enough. Hello Jack, and thanks for your contributions. I'd like to make a couple suggestions, if you don't mind. It will be easier for you and your co-editors to collaborate on articles if, instead of making multiple consecutive edits in rapid succession on an article, you use the "Show preview" button to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits. It also helps others watching those pages if you provide an edit summary. Thanks in advance for considering this.

• Help:Edit_summary promotes providing an edit summary when you make changes.

BTW, it's safe to say that she died by 1940, because articles in The Times about Jessie Bond in the late '30s and around 1940 say that Jessie and Durward Lely are the only original Savoyards left alive. They were not correct, see Decima Moore, but I think the statement clearly implies that Braham, Grey and that crowd were all dead except for Lely and Bond. Images from boisestate

Hi. I no longer use images from the G&S Archive, because even though they are public domain (at least in the US) the archivist gets upset, and I'd like to keep him friendly. So I promised him I wouldn't take any more, and he said that he wouldn't object to the ones already here. Of course, you never made any promises to him.... I just thought I'd let you know. In my opinion, we should be able to use any of the pre-1923 images without being criticized. I also don't generally like to use the photos from the Who Was Who site, because often our bios already rely heavily on text from that site, so I figure it's better to get images from eleswhere if possible. He is Director of American Studies at Columbia University, has written extensively for The New York Review of Books [6], The New Republic, Raritan and many other journals, has published several books, including Melville: His World and Work (2006), The Real American Dream: A Meditation on Hope (1999), Required Reading: Why Our American Classics Matter Now (1997), The Death of Satan: How Americans Have Lost the Sense of Evil (1995), The Puritan Ordeal (1989), and William Ellery Channing: An Essay on the Liberal Spirit in America (1981).(list of books). Hello Jack,

One of your images of Francis Coles that you had originally uploaded under Fair-use rationale was transferred to the Commons with a different rationale. Consequently, someone is claiming that the image is still under crown copyright and has stripped the permission from it. That means deletion will probably come up next...

1. We no longer use {{otheruses4}}. it is a deprecated template, and we use {{about}} instead.
2. Since the purpose of this hatnote is to disambiguate articles, it is not necessary to repeat the duplicating part of the article title in the hatnote:

For example:

Instead of saying:	Say:
Philip Bond the comic book artist	the comic book artist
Philip Bond the actor	the actor

Hi. :) I'm a member of the Wikimedia Foundation's OTRS team, handling e-mails sent to the Foundation. The Foundation has received an e-mail indicating that File:Ivan-moffat.jpg is not Ivan Moffat. (For my records and for any other OTRS members: Ticket:2010090110000775. I'm afraid only OTRS members can read the e-mail, as e-mails to the Foundation are confidential.) I cannot determine from the link you provided on uploading the image, here, how the source identified him. When searching the website for him by name, it does seem that they do not currently have an image associated with him: [8]. I'm wondering if it's possible that the website once erroneously identified the picture as depicting Ivan Moffat but has since removed it from his profile.
