Please take note of Wikipedia:Revision deletion#Log redaction. In particular, despite your edit summary saying delete an accidental undelete (is this possible? does it work?), it does in fact work, but for reasons that are beyond me policy explicitly prohibits admins from using log redaction solely to hide their own mistakes. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:56, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

In general I've noticed an increasing trend of talk page threads getting aggressively hatted or cotted or threadshitted or removed entirely when the people who start them have annoying or stupid political beliefs; there's obviously nothing wrong with disagreeing with them (and boy howdy, do I a lot of the time). But I get the impression that whether or not it's intended to be this way, it comes off most of the time as an act of owning the libs (or the cons or whoever the case may be). The incessant dunks on Larry whenever he posts, even when the post isn't stupid, are just downright sad -- people falling over themselves to say something rude about Citizendium for the eighteenth time, come on, can we get the WMF to send us some grass and then go touch it?
So I don't know, maybe I shouldn't have put it back, but I feel like if we can't take a single derisive comment from the co-founder of the website without having to resort to removing the post or spilling juice on ourselves or whatever, this is a skill issue on our part. jp×g🗯️ 11:29, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
So, I guess the "larries" was "people like User:Larry Sanger", whatever that means? No, I was not taking that user's side or anyone else's. When he makes an edit, he is an editor, just like you or I, and his edits are judged on their merits. That was a NOTFORUM edit and anyone coming across it should have removed it as such. It wasn't. Okay. But he also enjoys BLP and NPA protections, as does the subject of the article. In general, regarding whether to remove or hide a post, in my opinion, a post should be removed when there is nothing constructive in it needing archiving. And I think it is mistake to retain, even hidden, a thread such as that. But it was of course not severe enough a violation in any of the fronts to win me the wikiargument over it. Hence, my note that it was going to be a one-off bold action. Anyway, I was mainly curious about the particular phrase I could not nail down, with google. Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Header

Hi, I disagree with the added words at the Header. I didn't want to revert it, since I boldly edited in the original wording, but I don't think people failing to read the banner is a problem that is solved by adding more words.

Bizarre

I was pinged by an admin (you) which brought me to the antifa TP. All I could find was that two additional admins and a user with two million edits had been pinged and there was a one word explanation: “Bizarre”. A bit uncomfortable as I had no idea what bizarre action caused me to be pinged by an admin. At first I assumed it was my response to an ECP edit request, my most recent action on the article, but did not understand why three admins were required. Only when Justin responded did I find that there was a lengthy UTP discussion involving five admins (now a sixth is involved) of which I was unaware as his TP is not on my watchlist. Not to worry. I’ll make sure I know what’s going on in future by adding the rest of the 46,530,924 WP editors to my watchlist. O3000, Ret. (talk) 20:13, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 November. It will be on all wikis from 30 November (calendar). There is no new MediaWiki version next week. [7][8]
  • MediaWiki's JavaScript system will now allow async/await syntax in gadgets and user scripts. Gadget authors should remember that users' browsers may not support it, so it should be used appropriately. [9]
  • The deployment of "Add a link" announced last week was postponed. It will resume this week.

Signpost edits

Hi JPxG! I noticed that you made some fairly substantial edits earlier to the report I filed a week ago on the Beeblebrox suspension, adding yourself as a co-author, and then published the issue shortly thereafter. I appreciate the additional reporting you did, and most of the other tweaks looks alright, but there are a few that I would have wanted to adjust or discuss. In Signpost collaborations, unlike articlespace ones, my username is signed at the end, so I like to have the chance to ensure that I stand 100% behind what is being said in my name (more akin to a co-signed RfC), and the timing in this case unfortunately deprived me of that.

I know that sometimes the news moves fast or something doesn't get noticed until right before publication deadline. But in future instances where I file well in advance, I would appreciate it if ideally edits were made enough in advance of publication that I have a chance to review them. And though I'm generally watching the page anyways, a mention in the edit summary to ping me never hurts either.

Sorry about that. I have a bad habit of leaving N&N and ITM last in my editing, which I should remind myself to stop doing. Wikipedians most active in deletions?

Would it be possible to generate lists of English Wikipedia editors who are most active in deletion discussions? What about ones who have started the most? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:18, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

The good news is that I've improved substantially in my programming skills in the last couple years. The bad news is that I wrote the Oracle a couple years ago. So the answer is "kind of". The Oracle does parse user signatures from deletion discussions to measure participation, but currently it doesn't store the actual usernames. The code would probably be fairly simple to modify such that it did compile a list of usernames into that json, and I'd be happy to put it in a publicly accessible directory if so. (Although I also suspect a SQL query might be able to take the shot, at least specifically for starting discussions). jp×g🗯️ 08:39, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

7,000 extra /div tags?

This edit and a few more like it have caused something like 7,000 extra closing </div> tags to be transcluded into user talk pages. Can you please fix? – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:14, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Yeah, the script I am using to retrieve the old subheaders is working on very old and very bad data that needs a lot of manual cleaning. Sounds good. If you see a bunch of div tags listed on the "Last page" link of this report, either the system hasn't purged the pages after your fixes, or there are still one or two problems out there. Let me know if you need help. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:24, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
A third explanation for a bunch of divs listed on that report is that the delivery message for 4 November 2016, such as the one at User talk:Siva1979, has an extra </div> in it. Unfortunately, it's not transcluded, so they'll have to be removed individually (by a bot, ideally). – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:31, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
  • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
  • Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

Harrassment

Hello, I anticipated that appropriate measures would be taken if someone experienced harassment on Wikipedia. I have been subjected to repeated personal attacks, specifically being referred to as a "clown" by a user. This is clearly documented in the thread. The user claims I targeted their personal page, but in reality, I was merely notifying them about a discussion. I kindly request that you address this matter, or alternatively, seek assistance from someone who can dedicate time to resolve this issue. I'm making this request as a young editor. Election news: The Guild needs coordinators! If you'd like to help out, you may nominate yourself or any suitable editor—with their permission—for the Election of Coordinators for the first half of 2024. Nominations will close at 23:59 on 15 December (UTC). Voting begins immediately after the close of nominations and closes at 23:59 on 31 December. All editors in good standing (not under current sanctions) are eligible, and self-nominations are welcome. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term that ends at 23:59 on 30 June.

Drive: Of the 69 editors who signed up for the September Backlog Elimination Drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 661,214 words in 290 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.

Blitz: Of the 22 editors who signed up for the October Copy Editing Blitz, 13 copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 109,327 words in 52 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.

Drive: During the November Backlog Elimination Drive, 38 of the 58 editors who signed up copy-edited at least one article. Between them, they copy-edited 458,620 words in 234 articles. Barnstars awarded are listed here.
