New pages patrol newsletter[edit]

Hello JPxG,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Enabling collapsible templates on the mobile site[edit]

Thanks for leaving a comment in the discussion section of Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#RfC: Enabling collapsible templates on the mobile site! Your comment kind of sounded like a vote, but you didn't respond in the survey section so I'm unsure if your comment will be counted as a vote. If this was your intention that's fine, you're not obligated to vote.
Note on transparency: if someone posts a vote-like comment that seems like it was possibly intended to go into the survey section, I'll contact the user in question after a few days whether the potential vote is a support or oppose.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 22:13, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

October 2023[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm JPxG. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions—specifically this edit to User:Zhang He—because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Teahouse or the Help desk. Thanks. jp×g 23:59, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I do believe my contribution was justified...[edit]

BUT just to be clear I would be more than happy and interested to discuss!

I removed two ideology markers from the article on the South African political party, Economic Freedom Fighters. I understand some contributions may be controversial but I do earnestly believe that their inclusion in the infobox section is a mistake and a violation of wikipedias NPOV policy including some very specific guidance listed in the policy. I think it's essential that the topics that their inclusion intend to get at are discussed, it's just that in my understanding of the NPOV policy, those characterizations, as clearly controversial as they are, are best left discussed in the Criticisms and controversies section.

I have a more detailed run down of specifically what part of the NPOV policy I believe the infobox is currently in violation of in a post on the talk page for the Economic Freedom Fighters.

I would appreciate discussion on this topic and if there was a better or more constructive way I could have made the edit, I would also love to know. Thank you! Transvex (talk) 11:03, 9 October 2023 (UTC)transvex[reply]

@Transvex: The diff here removed what seemed to be reliable references, so I reverted. I do not intend to revert further on that; reading the article now I see that the issue is quite complicated, and at the very least more complicated than can be addressed while recent-changes patrolling. I see that you made a talk page section, which I think is the appropriate way to build consensus; there's nothing wrong with your actions here (making a couple bold edits, getting reverted, and then opening a talk page section). I'm not very well-versed on the politics of that region, so I can't say whether your points are reasonable or whether I agree with them, but at least on the surface it appears like you did the right thing here (although on a subject as controversial as this you might want to just start with the talk page section first). jp×g 01:25, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nerve[edit]

Hello, you messaged regarding a deletion of an erroneously labeled image for "Nerve." An edit summary was made. The figure has incorrect labels (for example perineurium is incorrectly labeled). Etc. 152.79.36.228 (talk) 20:30, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@152.79.36.228: If there's an issue with the labels, the image itself is on Commons (Commons:File:1319_Nerve_StructureN.jpg) so it's possible to request a modification or a fix. I mean, I'd be willing to edit the image and fix it myself with more specific information about what's wrong and what needs to be changed. jp×g 01:27, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Waterstreet - October 2023[edit]

Hi there,

You removed my additions to the Charles Waterstreet wikipedia page because I didn't cite reliable sources. Could you help me understand why the sources I cited weren't considered reliable? I cited the New Matilda, which is an Australian news website, for detail on Sarah Knight's allegations of harrassment. I also cited Honi Soit, the University of Sydney student paper, for details about a protest organized by University of Sydney students. If there are other sources I should be using, please let me know. The New Matilda broke the story of harrassment allegations against Charles Waterstreet; is there an issue with their reporting? What news outlets should I cite instead? Or did I just have too few citations? Regards, Malifee (talk) 11:12, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are huge paragraphs of stuff in there that contained rather dire implications about a living person and didn't have any citations at all. Specifically, the stuff like this:
:In these further 2018 allegations, Ms Knight claimed that although she was being interviewed for a position at Mr. Waterstreet's firm, four other people attended the interview, including a client. She further claimed that Mr Waterstreet introduced this client as a "porn star" and made reference to the size of the client's penis. She alleged that before the beginning of the interview, Mr Waterstreet conducted a phone call with a distressed client on loudspeaker in front of her and the four others, while "holding back laughter".
BLPs have higher standards than any other type of article, and controversial claims in BLPs even more so; I don't think it's reasonable to write all of this and not have any inline or paragraph citations (and, for what it's worth, the idea of citing several long paragraphs of this to a single article seems like a WP:DUE issue, but that's not an issue for recent changes patrol). jp×g 19:36, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Robyn Hood[edit]

You reverted me, apparently not noticing that my change was a revert of an unexplained removal of a section. --91.5.106.161 (talk) 14:26, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Actually you rollbacked me. Why? --91.5.106.161 (talk) 14:28, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This addition seemed bad to me because it was introducing a new section, with negative claims. Per what I can tell, user ratings from IMDB are not supposed to be used in articles. On one hand, WP:IMDB and Wikipedia:Citing IMDb are essays, but they do attempt to record a summary of consensus. I personally think this is silly, but it is what it is. jp×g 19:19, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi JPxG, I think this was an error, right? Reinstating an unsourced bit about IMDb user reviews without reliable sourcing isn't appropriate. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 19:15, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Soetermans: Yeah, I am trying to figure out what the deal is. I self-reverted to let it stay while I read up on it. I'm still not sure what actual consensus about IMDB user reviews are; like I say above, the two things that come up when you try to search for it are just random essays. jp×g 19:19, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your quick response! I'm mostly involved in WP:VG and edit video game articles, occasionally people try to add a mention of a particularly low or particularly high user review (case in point: Eternights), consensus there is that we need a reliable, independent source to comment on those user reviews, like in the case of Mass Effect 3. So just a mention of IMDb isn't appropriate. Just pointing to IMDb isn't enough. And probably also because there have been a total of two episodes aired so far!. soetermans. ↑↑↓↓←→←→ B A TALK 19:48, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons for edits[edit]

If you want to know why someone made an edit, you can start by reading the edit summaries. Then, if you still don't understand, ask on the article talk page, or the user's talk page. Reverting for no reason and asking in the edit summary is ridiculous and disruptive. 217.195.251.12 (talk) 04:31, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your edit summary, which was a vague handwave at WP:TRIVIA: I'm asking why you think this applies here. As far as I can tell, you removed an entire section because its section heading read "miscellaneous".
The coat of arms of Leiden is two red keys, crossed in an X-shape on a white background. These keys are the Keys of Heaven held by St. Peter, for whom a large church in the city centre is named. Because of this coat of arms, Leiden is referred to as the "Sleutelstad" ("the key city").
This had an inline citation, even -- and clearly related to the subject of the article. You're saying there's absolutely nowhere whatsoever in the rest of the article that this could have gone? jp×g 04:44, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think that if you disagree about the notability of TESCREAL then the better would be to open a deletion process, which gives better opportunity for other people to weight in the discussion. A redirection is too much of a silent deletion. JoaquimCebuano (talk) 19:26, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
