Answers to common questions

[edit]

Why did you delete my image?

[edit]

The simple answer: I didn't. Someone else did.

The full answer: If you're coming here to ask about an image, it probably was deleted because you forgot to note where you got the image from, or you forgot to indicate the copyright status of the image. See Wikipedia:Image use policy for more information on what you need to do when uploading images.

It says that anyone can copy this image. Why is it being deleted?

[edit]

The image is not under a free license. There are three things that the image creator needs to permit for an image to be under a free license:

  1. They need to permit distribution
  2. They need to permit modification and incorporation into other works (the creation of derivative works)
  3. They need to permit distribution of derivative works

A permission to copy covers #1, but does not permit #2 (which is what lets Wikipedia use it in an article), and does not permit #3 (which is what permits us to distribute Wikipedia, and what permits people to re-use Wikipedia content).

I got permission to use this image in Wikipedia. Why is it being deleted?

[edit]

Simple permission is not good enough. The image owner could revoke permission at any time, and the image can't be reused anywhere else: not in Wiktionary, not in Wikibooks, and possibly not in the other languages Wikipedia is available in. It also prevents people from re-using Wikipedia content. Wikipedia is a free content encyclopedia, so any image should be under a free license. Simple permission fails all three points of what constitutes a free license.

It says that anyone can use this image for noncommercial purposes. Wikipedia is non-commercial, so that means it's okay, right?

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that runs Wikipedia, is registered as a non-profit organization. That doesn't mean it's noncommercial, though: the German Wikipedia, for example, sells copies of the encyclopedia on CD-ROM as a fundraising measure. Further, Wikipedia is a free content encyclopedia, so any image should be under a free license. Any license with a "no commercial use" clause fails all three points of what constitutes a free license.

It says that anyone can use this image for educational purposes. Wikipedia is educational, so that means it's okay, right?

[edit]

Wikipedia articles are intended to educate, yes. But "educational purposes" is a very vague term. The creator of the image could mean that they only want the image to be used by universities and the like, or they might object to Wikipedia's coverage of popular culture. It's best to stay away from images with such vague terms.

Further, Wikipedia is a free content encyclopedia, so any image should be under a free license. Any license with an "educational use only" clause fails all three points of what constitutes a free license.

The web page I found this image on doesn't say anything about copyright. That means it's free to use, right?

[edit]

Wrong. In the United States, under the Berne Convention Implementation Act of 1988, every tangible work of creative effort created after March 1, 1989 is automatically copyrighted. Including a copyright statement gives you a stronger position if you file a copyright infringement lawsuit, and you need to register your copyright with the Library of Congress to file the lawsuit, but neither step is needed to get a copyright in the first place.

I found this image on the Internet. Anyone can see it, so that means it's in the public domain, right?

[edit]

Wrong. Anyone can see a book in a public library, or a painting in an art gallery, but that doesn't mean those are in the public domain. The Internet is no different.

The image was created 50 years ago. It can't possibly still be copyrighted, can it?

[edit]

Wrong. In the United States, copyright lasts a very long time. As a rule of thumb, everything published in 1929 or later is copyrighted.

Community National Bank and Trust Stadium (Corsicana)

[edit]

I am just finding out that a picture of the stadium that I uploaded was deleted from the page. I will be re uploading it with the proper citations to avoid this, but sometimes it is better to ask instead of edit recklessly. Scca8704 (talk) 01:33, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A fully approved image of Andrew McGibbon was removed from his page this morning without discussion, despite my providing a full and detailed explanation in the image data. He owns the copyright and supplied a high resolution copy for specific use here. This explanatory text has also been deleted, again with no discussion. An explanation please. AfD nomination of Harvey Delai

[edit]

An editor has nominated Harvey Delai, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Harvey Delai and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 09:00, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Henry Kissinger

[edit]

The bot removed a link to a dead image in the Henry Kissinger article; the article was broken before (because the image was deleted -- thus there was an "invalid image" error) but now it is still broken. Perhaps you could add some code to check if the image is linked in an image box or something similar?--71.108.167.113 (talk) 06:04, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image that was deleted-1972 Vega Kammback is a scan I made of my photograph taken in 1973 of my grandfathers car. in the discussion on the five images in question (all my photos) it was astablished that they are my photos taken by me and scanned on my Cannon 310 scanner and (trying to KEEP THEM IN THE ARTICLE.) Now that the non-free images are all but deleted I resorted to my old photograhs of vegas I have owned and my grandfather's. I would like the photo back in the article please. It says in deleted file it was admitted that it was a magazine scan. wrong file. I listed it as a scan of my photograph from 1973. The magazine scan was a non-free image that was also deleted. Simplify Help/ instructions. Lack of clarity in help pages is the biggest reason for non-compliance

[edit]

Unfortunately, I find Wikipedia userunfriendly. I spent more than 4 hours to upload 4 images of Shah Baleeghuddin saheb, which I received from the Shah Baleeghuddin Foundation with permission. Reason, user unfriendly information on the help pages. Wikipedia seems to be only for those individuals who are either expert Programmers or have some understanding of programming. I have fairly advanced computer skills but sorry to say I find instructions difficult to follow. I have two requests: - Please help me in clear steps as to what I need to do to establish the permission of the images you removed. Do not refer me to another page filled with jargon baout programming. - this is a plea, as Wikipedia is a very informative and valuable project, please simplify the instructions not all the people uploading and editing are Programmers. Instructions are very difficult to understand. More people would conform to the Wiki policies, if they understand the instructions.

Thanks

Image deletion w/o checking for coherence solves no problems

[edit]

Your so called bot removed at least four images from the page List of U.S. National Parks by Elevation. Someone else had previously deleted the image from wikipedia for supposed unclear copyright issues, a separate issue, but then ImageRemovalBot comes along and takes out the blank box where the picture used to be without making sure the article still makes sense without the image. The four images were part of the references at the bottom of the article. The footnotes make reference to these images. Without the images, the footnotes don't make sense. Now, unless you actually read the footnotes, you won't notice that something is wrong. The images need to be replaced, not removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ArcticBartek (talkcontribs) 22:42, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Time lag

[edit]

How fast does this bot need to move? For example, when removing deleted images from articles, should it do so immediately after they are deleted, or should it take into consideration active, non-automated, editing by real logged-in users?

For example, if two images are duplicates of each other but the image to be deleted has the title which is wished to be kept, then the unwanted image must be deleted and then the desired image must be moved to the title of the deleted image. This takes far less time than it took me to type the above (click 'delete', type a quick reason, click 'move', type a quick reason) and the image would been back in the article, unless it gets removed from the article by a bot without a stopwatch. Removal of "deleted" images that are on commons

[edit]

I'm seeing a bunch of removals of images from pages with the edit-summary that the image was deleted. However...not really, the image was just moved to commons (perhaps recently or long ago) and only the local copy was what got deleted (the commons image itself still appears at the same filename). I just reverted a bunch of them (easy to find by looking for bluelinks in the edit-summaries of Special:Contributions/ImageRemovalBot). I don't recall seeing problems like this before the recent MW upgrade. In the first case I checked, I did go to the page on en and got a weird display (what one usually sees for a deleted image) rather than the usual way the commons one is displayed--server-purge on the page fixed it so that the commons image appeared "as if local". I wonder if there's a general caching problem or delay when images are deleted that is confusing the bot, or a change in the way "does a file exist?" tests work when there's a commons file of same name? DMacks (talk) 20:50, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing this was a side effect of MediaWiki bug 31383, which has been fixed. --Carnildo (talk) 00:57, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Galleries

[edit]

The bot does not, apparently, handle galleries correctly -- it began the removal shown here after the pipe, when it should have been before. That messed up all the later images in the gallery. . . Jim - Jameslwoodward (talk to mecontribs) 14:29, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to Upload an Image

[edit]

I have a question. How do I upload an image such as "Birthday Emotions" from the Sesame Street TV Show? Dcelano 23:39, July 12, 2013 (UTC)

File:Sino-American Dream.jpg Without reading the publisher's legal authorization, you removed the image. It appeared that the publisher, who has the copyrights to the image, uploaded it. Why did you remove the legally authorized image for wiki publication? Please reconsider and read the legal content responsibly for the service of others. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lui Kaiping (talkcontribs) 14:44, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted image that should have been replaced.

[edit]

The bot just deleted links to File:Rocket mass ratio versus delta-v.png, but it was deleted as there's an SVG version, File:Rocket mass ratio versus delta-v.svg. I've been though and replaced the images (only 6 occurrences); is there some way this could have been done automatically, if not by this bot by some other as I'm sure I've seen a bot doing this before?--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 21:25, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lisa Adams image

[edit]

Hi ImageRemovalBot, Why do you have deleting the image of Lisa Adams? It is fair use but the Englsih wiki agree it with fair use image's.--Maxie1hoi (talk) 11:55, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Diannaa deleted the image for violating one of the criteria for non-free images: it's an image of a living person, so it's reasonable to expect that a free image can be found or created. --Carnildo (talk) 01:01, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Lil Rob,2015.jpg

[edit]

Hello, why did you delete my picture? I don't believe that it is copy righted, And why are you answering the same answer to those other users? My picture is not a non-content picture, I tookin this picture myself. M.P. (MasterPiece) (talk) 07:24, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

User:Diannaa deleted the image because it was lacking information on the image's source and copyright status. When you upload an image, you need to say where you got it, and you need to provide license information -- if you created the image yourself, you need to indicate which license you're using to give Wikipedia the right to use the image. --Carnildo (talk) 02:12, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

F. L. Lucas

[edit]

I understand you removed the 'River Flows' image I added to the F. L. Lucas page because book-cover titles are only allowed on book-pages, not on author-pages (despite my adding a justification for the image on the author-page); so I've now written an article on the book, and would be grateful if you could unblock the image for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Tom_elm/sandbox/The_River_Flows_(novel)&action=edit With thanks, 193.39.159.73 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.39.159.73 (talk) 16:18, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

CFB North Bay Page

[edit]

Good day. You deleted images I uploaded to the CFB North Bay page on 17 January 2017 citing "You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image." I made it abundantly clear in the uploading and in the credit lines that these images (a) belong to the subject--22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay--and that (b) I, an officer on this base, uploaded the images with the Base Commander's permission. So there are NO licensing issues. I uploaded the images on behalf of the owner, with his full permission. I expect that you are probably not Canadian nor are familiar with how permissions work with respect to images belonging to units of the Canadian Armed Forces, so I understand your confusion in this matter. So reinstate the images please. And if you have any further concerns please contact me to discuss before you delete or alter anything. I shall do everything I can to placate these concerns to your satisfaction. Thank you. Yours respectfully, Doug Newman, Captain, 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay 22WHERO (talk) 14:30, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File:Trout Flies designed by Richard Walker.JPG Can you explain why this file has been deleted? I created the flies shown in the picture and took the photograph and own the file and have agreed for it to go in the public domain. I cannot see a copyright problem. Can you help restore it. Question

[edit]

Hey only one question. Can I put up images on wikipedia from the same person's wikipedia page (example: I put up a picture of Amar Osim from his Bosnian wikipedia page to his English wikipedia page. That same thing I also done with Husref Musemić. Those two pictures were not deleted before I deleted them. So my question is if it is okay to upload images from a Bosnian to an English wikipedia page of the same person? BosGamBR (talk) 16:32, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.I would like to say something. Why did you delete the photo of Christophoros Papakaliatis that I uploaded? I had said my source I don't know how to explain it in English language.Είχα παραθέσει την πηγή, έγραψα την ημερομηνία, είχα βάλει την άδεια χρήσης.What's more did you want?

Deletion of an image used within Template:Multiple image

[edit]

This edit by ImageRemovalBot deleted one of two images used with Template:Multiple image, resulting in a single over-sized and distorted image looking like a mess. Please note, I am not contesting why the image was deleted. I wonder if there is a better way to remove the image from the page without the resutling mess? This could be a unique situation where the bot flags the page for manual deletion? Best wishes. Flibirigit (talk) 01:19, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
