WikiCup 2018

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Icem4k. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Famousstarbirthdays as a source

Hi Icem4k . I noticed that you used famousstarbirthdays as a source for information in a biography article, Melissa Roxburgh. I am unable to find any evidence or discussion indicating that famousstarbirthdays meets reliable sourcing criteria for the inclusion of personal information in such articles. If you disagree, let's discuss it. Thanks.--Ronz (talk) 18:29, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

 • United States Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
 • Germany FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
 • India Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
 • United States Ceranthor, India Numerounovedant, Minnesota Carbrera, Netherlands Farang Rak Tham and Romania Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. A barnstar for you!

The Real Life Barnstar
Thank you LNM (talk) 15:12, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously. You must not copy and paste text from sources you find on the web into articles as you did in the article Natasha Salifyanji Kaoma. I have removed the violations, but the material you copied is copyright text and you should instead write such information in your own words. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:57, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

@Cwmhiraeth Thank you for that. I think I need some help on those copyright issues so that I can get some in-depth on this. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 19:38, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
What I do is read the source material through and jot down the main points, and then put it away and write a paraphrase using an entirely different sentence structure. So, part of your article could become "Since 2009, Kaomo has been cooperating with various organizations, working on campaigns in villages and schools to improve the well-being of young women and girls." Hope this helps. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:04, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth i get the general ideal will be doing as adviced once again thank you. One more question so let's say I use a different sentence structure I can use the link as a reference? Chabota Kanguya (talk) 05:56, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
Yes you can. I see that another editor, Hut 8.5, has removed a sentence with the edit summary (don't ever use the Daily Mail as a source for a BLP). I think this is a mistaken comment with regard to your article, because he is referring to a British newspaper that Wikipedia disapproves of while you are using the Zambia Daily Mail which I would imagine is considered reliable when it comes to news about Zambia. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:14, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth Yeah that's what I was wondering I now what is wrong with Zambia Daily Mail and yes Zambia Daily Mail being the national newspaper here in Zambia and a very reliable news source. Nonetheless thank you very much for the pointers and help me improve on the copyright issues I have always wondered what I was doing wrong. Thank very much. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 06:57, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

@Ipigott thank very much for the warm welcome, and yes there is more coming just have problems in sourcing mostly on Zambian content otherwise the rest of the world am all good😊. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 08:20, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Categories

Hi, I have reverted a couple of your edits, but I note that you have added a large number of articles (and some categories) to when they are already in this category by virtue of being in one of the sub categories. Please revert your edits where this is the case and take care not to make this mistake in future. Thank you, Melcous (talk) 10:53, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

@Melcous please do note that we in Zambia have collaborated with Wikipedia want to work on the Zambia articles we have 50 new contributors and so we want them to easily find these articles in one category which in this case is women in Zambia. They are still new to Wikipedia that's the only easy way for them to find those articles. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 11:00, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Please see WP:CAT for more information on how categories on wikipedia work. For example, you can see on the page that this is a container category, and should contain no articles, only subcategories. The same should be true from the category Zambian women. Articles that are in a subcategory should not also be in a parent category. Your editors can find the articles by learning to use the subcategory system like everyone else does, that's how wikipedia works. Again I would ask you to please revert your edits as they are not helpful. Thank you, Melcous (talk) 11:55, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
@Melcous Okay thank you for that, your advice has been taken note of, but please do note that I was adding and not I was editing off the category and adding category this was after I a saw that its a container of subcategories so I was correcting that unless am wrong if you don't mind please advice on that.Chabota Kanguya (talk) 12:10, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Yes, but both of those should be container categories, the Category Women in Zambian has three subcategories, one of which is Zambian Women, and should have no articles. Thank you Melcous (talk) 12:16, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
@Melcous Wait let me get this straight so I need to wipe them clean. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 12:24, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Articles should be in appropriate categories, e.g. "Zambian women ministers" or "Zambian women athletes" but yes if there are parent categories of those sub-categories also on the same articles, they should be removed. Thanks, Melcous (talk) 21:36, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of Zambian Music Blog for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Zambian Music Blog is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zambian Music Blog until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. The Mighty Glen (talk) 13:27, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

@The Mighty Glen Hehehe I saw this one coming been waiting for over two years now since 2016. But am sure it will be kept am very confident on that. Question why wait that long for it to be nominated ? Chabota Kanguya (talk) 15:16, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of Echo music blog for deletion

Hello please lets be gentle sometimes in the way we try to accuse something promotional, when in the common sense its not. The blog exists and I have provided proof i could find as references. There is nothing in the article relating to it been so popular or stating its the best blog in the world. Check this page named "Zambian Music Blog" and tell me the difference with the above subject. There in the same order and actually serve the same purpose. Denying other articles but whilst you approve similar articles ain't creating a great name for wikipedia. Thanks and Kind regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Muchuu Muchuu (talkcontribs) 12:04, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

@Muchuu Muchuu Yes it does exist we can see that but it fails the WP:WEB and WP:GNG also tikalangana ma refs those are baseless and don't talk about Echo Music Blog and you can't say that just because Zambian Music Blog is here and you have copied one or two words from that articles and think it might pass have your own story to tell and not someone else's and apply it to yourself and hope you might have the same fate. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 14:47, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
@Icem4k:LOl that's your perspective, like seriously. Where have you seen copied content? The story is different. You must be dreaming if you think i will hire you to do the works.Muchuu Muchuu (talk) 05:48, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
@Muchuu Muchuu No you don't have to hire anyone besides am not interested just do your homework write again or edit it to pass the WP:WEB and WP:GNG then publish it and we will see what happens. And FYI all my articles I have never been hired to write I just write in my own interest. oh and by the way if it makes you happy here Zambian Music Blog is up for deletion Chabota Kanguya (talk) 06:49, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
@Icem4k: I don't intend having issues you or anyone, I was also just trying to contribute the web content because I'm fascinated by music and a lot of things happening in Zambia.I am sorry if I sounded rude, its just that after putting in too much effort and you realize people treating the all thing like trash really doesn't make one feel motivated. Stay safe!Muchuu Muchuu (talk) 23:33, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
@Muchuu Muchuu: Oh trust me you haven't seen anything yet cause i remember the story of Jimmy the found of Wikipedia he created an article of a place in South Africa it was deleted because it doesn't meet the notability standards mind you this is the founder am talking about that's when he mentioned that he lost control over Wikipedia its got its own mind. Look I have here for 6 years I have had articles deleted on a number of occasions just imagine that an article on Roberto was deleted cause it not meet the notability stands and am sure you know who Roberto is and what he has done in the music industry in Zambia since he is not known in the state's or Europe he is notable. But what did I do then I just added it to draf list when am confident that it will pass I then publish it then hope for the best. So my advice is just add it to your sandbox polish it up get some news coverage then republish it. Otherwise my friend African content without refs here this me speaking out of experience it's not easy I have been in this position one two may times I lost count. That's why most of my articles are based of American actors films and Europe based less problems there cause Zambian content is had to find and reference unless if it's politics. You just have to do a comeback just do what I have said get some news coverage for others websites top of the Daily Mail, Lusaka Times, ZNBC etc if you can get those trust me you will not have problems. The Zambian Music Blog article i knew the time I created it that it fails the WP:WEB and WP:GNG but I was surprised it stayed that long since 2016. I saw yours cause you started edited one of my best so far articles B Flow promoting your article and when I saw yours article profile plus the refs where not talking about Ecoh Music Blog so I thought its another ZambianMusic.Net cause those chaps are busy advertising everywhere vandalizing articles it's sad. Anyways thank you for understanding Happy Editing. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 05:26, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
@Icem4k: Cheers and thanks for your insight. I am suprized they would delete something even big as Roberto. I guss I will also just start focusing on the international articles and happening.ZibaZako 12:52, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

 • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
 • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
 • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
 • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
 • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
 • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
 • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Notice

The article Lisa Solberg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails to meet notability requirements

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Invitation to participate in study

Hello,

I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. A full write-up of the study can be found here: m:Research:Civil_Behavior_Interviews. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at [email protected] in order to schedule an interview.

Thank you Ewitch51 (talk) 21:29, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

@Ewitch51 Thank you for the invitation but the equipment am using I don't think the interview will not go so well. Nonetheless thanks for the invitation I would have loved to take part. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 04:32, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

 • South Carolina Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
 • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
 • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). @Icem4K it was by accident. By the way, is this not a reliable source https://www.daily-mail.co.zm/mic-diggy-signs-cd-run/ ?? I was told the article Mic Diggy will be deleted unless i provide one reliable reference but there's more — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vicmullar (talkcontribs) 14:08, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

@Eagleash Hehe... I know but it's just a pointer to help him review in the days to come as he contributes to Wikipedia just a throught. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 15:01, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
@Vicmullar That's what they say trust me I have been long enough to tell that page will not stay for long trust me. Have atlest 5 independent refrences that specifically talk about the artist take for example the B Flow article and look at the references read what's here then follow the link and see you will find that what is here is not baseless but has a back bone to support it. Chabota Kanguya (talk) 15:01, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
I'm not certain it was correct to 'prod' in these circumstances: the number of references should preclude it in my view. If you had / have concerns about the page perhap AfD would have been the way to go. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 15:10, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

@Eagleash There are more links available actually. Thats why i need help to reference them accordingly. The next articles i'd like to make about P Jay and Slap Dee — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vicmullar (talkcontribs) 15:20, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

It looks alright, yeah, but there is some work still left over till we can actually put it in article namespace (some wikifying like inserting a reference that Andrew is a notable alumni, formatting, etc.). I'll try to do some in the next days but as I'm in the bush of Tanzania that won't be easy. --Zenith4237 (talk) 19:04, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

 • South Carolina Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
 • Hel, Poland Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
 • Scotland Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
 • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Marshall Islands Nova Crystallis, Republic of Texas Iazyges, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack and United States Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best editor win! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Godot13, Sturmvogel 66, Vanamonde and Cwmhiraeth. AfroCine: The Months of African Cinema Continues….

Greetings!

Thank you very much for signing up to participate in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 200 articles created in over seven (7) languages! The figures soars to up to a thousand, if Wikidata entries are included. Furthermore, there have been about 5 in-person gatherings of Wikipedians in different countries across the world to create articles about African(a) cinema!

We are very excited about what has been achieved so far, but your contributions are still needed to further exceed all expectations! Let’s create more articles before the end of this contest, which is this November!!!

 • Article suggestions can be found here. You can also add to this list.
 • Some notable reliable sources for African cinema can be found here. Again, this list needs expansion.
 • Interested in Wikidata translation? check out the Occupation Drive, which is being led by Wiki Loves Women, in support of the contest and the project!
 • Please remember to list articles you have created or improved in the Article Achievements section of the contest page, so that they can be easily tracked.

Thank you once again for being part of this global event!

Kind regards.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 22:50, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

A page you started (Chloé Bourgeois (character)) has been reviewed!

Thanks for creating Chloé Bourgeois (character).

I have just reviewed the page, as a part of our page curation process and note that:-

This character does not meet notability guidelines because it is not the subject of multiple independent, reliable, secondary sources. The content from the page has been pasted onto the talk page of List of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir characters so that it can be fully merged.

To reply, leave a comment here and prepend it with Citrivescence. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

@Citrivescence Thanks for the review nonetheless I was just testing if it can be stand alone somehow hahah... otherwise thanks Chabota Kanguya (talk) 16:48, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Zambia Super League or Zambian Super League?

Hello, I agree with your page moves but should the page not be titled Zambian Super League 2019 instead of Zambia Super League 2019, in the same way it's the English Premier League and not the England Premier League? I thought I'd ask before moving the pages myself! Thanks! SportingFlyer talk 08:00, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Oops! oh yes @SportingFlyer it should be Zambian Super League and not Zambia Super League. --Chabota Kanguya (talk) 08:04, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
No worries! I've updated all of the titles and fixed the redirects. Also do you know who the fourth promoted team was this year? I saw Manchester Academy were leading the group but it is hard to find information about them in a web search. SportingFlyer talk 19:04, 27 December 2018 (UTC)
@SportingFlyer Not at the moment but i will collect the physcial copies from the football house here in Zambia i will be paying the a visit. Its hard to get information about the Zambian Super League at the moment from online sources unless in January when the league starts. --Chabota Kanguya (talk) 19:28, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup!

Hello and Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email).
