Snipergate

Hi, I was hoping you could help me. The Snipergate redirect was speedily deleted as "Attack page or negative unsourced BLP", however the text it redirects too [1] is reliably sourced (The Times) and remains present on Clinton's own article.

I'm not sure who nominated the redirect, would you be able to restore or put it to some sort of XFD please. Ryan4314 (talk) 21:17, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

The reason the redirect was deleted was because it was a defamatory neologism (anything ending in -gate is defamatory) linked to a biography of a living person, a term which did not appear anywhere in the source you provided. If The Times had used the term, a case could have been made to retain the redirect, but looking at the ghits, there's a lot of sound and fury from blogs, and precious little from reliable sources. I respect your reasoning, but would you mind taking a look at this Times article[2] and telling me your thoughts though please. Also I got a some hits when I tried the googlenews algorithm used at AFD. [3] Ryan4314 (talk) 23:00, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, the 22 hits you found in Google news (some of which are duplicates—through both the original source and Highbeam Research) don't do much to bolster the notability of the term, but I'll restore it and submit it to RFD. (Redirects do not need the same level of notability as articles.) It's almost certain to get re-nuked though. The track record for -gate redirects is generally lackluster; see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2010 January 30#January 30, which has three -gate redirects which were all deleted (one as a speedy delete), and I'm sure that with a little searching, more could be found (Wrightgate is a redlink, for example, as is Passportgate, which actually has a higher tailored g-hit number than "Snipergate"). I'll restore the redirect later tonight, when I have a chance to write up the RFD for the term. Horologium (talk) 00:56, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Thankyou for your time. Ryan4314 (talk) 13:07, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
I have restored it and listed it. See Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2010 February 16#Snipergate. Horologium (talk) 14:16, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
