Edit war over at Adolescent sexuality

[edit]

Hi Messedrocker. I personally think that the article should be merged into Adolescence and Sexuality, but that's beside the point right now. The page is in the middle of a revert war, and I was wondering if you could help bring some order back. I'm out of town and have few opportunities to go online. Thanks in any case. Bot for image replacement

[edit]

I was wondering if you could set your bot up to replace all the instances of Image:Gadsden_flag_large.png with Image:Gadsden_flag.svg. I replaced all the "important" uses myself, but a user (who hasn't been active for a couple months) used the former in his signature, and I don't want to have to replace them all by hand. I would like to delete the png version, since the svg version should make it completely redundant, but don't want to leave redlinks all over talk pages. If you can help, thanks. Lexicon (talk) 15:26, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see that the image is on Commons, and they've decided to suspend deletion of superseded images for the time being, but if it's not too much trouble, you could go ahead and replace them anyway. If you want. Whatever. Lexicon (talk) 15:42, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you also make a list of the articles tagged with {{Unreferencedsect}} and {{More sources}}? If people remove the unreferenced tag and take an article off the list, they might fear it will lack attention. Having pages for all these templates will encourage appropriate tagging. The mailing list already discussed multiple cases in which articles with lots of sources were tagged as unreferenced. Ed Poor posting Wikipedia IRC logs on Conservpedia

[edit]

So Ed posted #wikipedia IRC logs on Conservapedia? No one is supposed to be even logging wikipedia's IRC channels, right? How can he consider this "matter resolved" when he shouldn't have been even doing it in the first place? Is he still keeping logs? Hi. Your 'bot has just tagged the children's author A. A. Milne with a WikiProject Computing tag. I was going to rv, but I thought I'd ask first in case I'm missing the point, somewhere. Best. Old Moonraker 12:14, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. Can you please slow down / revert with your bot, or explain what categories you're using for this? It's definitely contributing to the "everything vaguely related" WikiProject clutter on the top of talk pages. Obscure video game minutiae pages (like 27 True Runes) are getting tagged with WP:Computing. I highly doubt that there's anything in WP:Computing that can aid articles like that, any more than tagging any random Hollywood movie with WikiProject California. SnowFire 12:33, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I looks like you are already aware of this, but just letting you know that I removed the WikiProject Computing tag from the A Defense of Abortion article, and it seems like more than just this article slipped through the cracks. MessedRobot and the "WikiProject Computing" template.

[edit]

Hi Messedrocker. This needs no action from your part, I just wanted to comment/clarify one thing.

I noticed your MessedRobot added and then removed the "WikiProject Computing" template from the talkpages of two cryptography articles (A5/1 and A5/2). Your bot left this comment: "Removing WikiProject tag until a more concise list of articles is developed. If this article is relevant to the WikiProject, the tag will be re-added."

Well, the simple answer is that cryptography related articles are not handled by the WikiProject Computing but instead by the WikiProject Cryptography. (WikiProject Cryptography is a subcategory of WikiProject Mathematics and WikiProject Computer science. And WikiProject Computer science in turn is a subcategory of WikiProject Computing.)

So instead we usually tag the talkpages of cryptography related articles with the template {{CryptographyProject}}. So I added that template to those talkpages.

--David Göthberg 15:44, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Messedrocker. I noticed you started to add your "WikiProject Computing" template to crypto talkpages again. I would prefer you would not do that. If all "parent" WikiProjects to crypto would add their templates then we would get 5-10 different templates on top of each crypto talkpage. That will be very confusing for editors. If you intend to keep up with this I suggest you first take it up for discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cryptography.

--David Göthberg 05:38, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Paste from David's talkpage:
Hello! In the second run, the articles that are being added are doing so because they belong to a specific category related to computing. I added a clause in AWB to ignore pages with the cryptography template, but I don't know if it will work or not. Let me know if more cryptography pages are tagged. Signed, your friendly neighborhood MessedRocker. 05:54, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't work. You are tagging both talkpages that already have the "CryptographyProject" template and those that don't have it. And even if you get your "fix" to work it means you will mass tag crypto talkpages that not yet have the "CryptographyProject" template which will be even more confusing since then people will think those pages are part of the WikiProject Computing and not the WikiProject Cryptography.
I thought it was against Wikipedia policies to run a bot totally automatically without a manual visual check of each page update before saving the page?
--David Göthberg 06:05, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding what you wrote on my talkpage, here are some examples: Talk:HMAC, Talk:Message authentication code, Talk:One-key MAC. This is a tricky problem... --David Göthberg 06:21, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so I conclude that you agree on that usually only the most specific wikiproject should tag the page. So I will go ahead and fix the crypto talkpages that your bot added. Unfortunately I don't have a bot since non of the wikipedia bots I know of runs on my OS so I have to do everything manually. :(( --David Göthberg 06:31, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll have a look. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 15:22, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Even though it's only a single sentence, I think it makes the article more comprehensive. A couple more suggestions if you'd like:
  • You could probably change "Theobromine has been described as…" to "Theobromine is…". I think the present wording just adds unnecessary uncertainty.
  • The "Natural sources" section would look better if you made the species list into a table, ranking the species and mentioning specific concentrations, where in the plant they are found etc.

If (when? :) you renominate it for GAC, I should probably not review it again. The GA review guidelines discourage editors from reviewing articles which are of interest to their WikiProjects, and as a member of WP:PHARM I probably shouldn't have reviewed it in the first place… Happy editing, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 20:09, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your Vandalism

[edit]

According to the 1972 publication Soybeans: Chemistry and Technology which quotes studies dating as far back as the 1940s, highly refined isolated soy protein has an average biological value of 71.[1] Compare this to the average biological value for other soy products as well as different foodstuffs:

  • White flour: 41[1]
  • Full-fat soy flour: 64[1]
  • Soybean curd (tofu): 64[1]
  • Whole wheat: 64[2]
  • Immature bean: 65[1]
  • Beef: 74.3[2]
  • Fish: 76[2]
  • Defatted soy flour: 81[1]
  • Rice: 83[3]
  • Cheese: 84[3]
  • Cow milk: 90[4]
  • Soybean milk: 91[1]
  • Chicken egg: 94[4]
  • Human milk: 95[4]
  • Whole bean: 96[1]

I did some digging. You added this to an article. This information is in the soy protein article. This is scrap. I consider this to be vandalism and trash. Since you are the one who added useless scrap to the article you can clean up your own mess yourself. Drecker 18:31, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

http://mycause.com/bjw/AKSmith-SJCircle-soy-protein.pdf This is NOT from a reliable publication. You are way off base. I read the talk about this too. These are studies which date back over 50 years. There are more accurate recent studies. You have no argument for vandalising Wikipedia. The only question I have is where can I report you for adding crappy references to damage the article. I recommend you delete the scrap before you embarress yourself further. Drecker 06:46, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Biological value of soy protein

Main Article: Biological Value

Another measure of a protein's use in nutrition is the Biological Value scale. The Biological Value method, which dates back to 1911 relies on nitrogen retention as a measurement of protein quality. However, it does not take into account certain factors influencing the digestion of the protein. Nonetheless, the Biological Value (BV) methodology is an accurate indicator of biological activity for protein quality and utilization in humans.[11][12][13] Soybean protein isolate has a BV of 74 as compared to egg white protein at 83.[14][15]

The above information is currently in the article. More authoritative sources are above. [14][15] are good examples.

14 [2] is an advertisement for Max Muscle (a sports supplement company) - that article would have a tough time passing as a reliable source upon closer scrutiny by the Wikipedia community.
15 isn't even linked in that article - how can you qualify "more authoritive" if you can't even click through to it? That source is completely unverified. --Yankees76 21:36, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are already more recent and reliable sources and information in the article right now. You still have no good excuses for your vandalism. I like to hear if you have anymore excuses. I am not interested in editing articles on Wikipedia and getting involved in explaining the obvious. You have information in the article that contradicts the other information. You have studies from the 1940s that are scrap and there are recent and more reliable studies thar are far more accurate. Take your pick. Drecker 17:10, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

These were the most authoritative resources at my disposal. If you can find more recent sources that are just as authoritative, then I would like to see them. In any case, I will see if I can find more recent information in a subscription database I now have access to that I didn't then. I didn't like having to quote very old work, but it was the best thing I could find (there was nothing else that ensured credibility). —Signed, your friendly neighborhood MessedRocker. 19:49, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Wrong. I pointed to you there are more authoritative sources in the article right now. You still have no excuses left. Drecker 21:15, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aren't these the same tired old arguments given by Messenger2010 (talk · contribs) and his legions of sockpuppets? All I see is alot of the same old critcism, but no actual help in the form of new sources or an intelligent discussion. What's even more interesting is that in the last three days, there is a sudden flush of new users (Drecker, LenesisZ, Heckter, Giftchild) who are magically all making the same edits to soybean, soy protein and PDCAAS and giving all the same arguments to support these odd edits. I find it strange that this sudden influx of new users has such intimate knowledge of the history of these articles to make all the same edits as before (sometimes word for word). Curious indeed.... --Yankees76 21:25, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The personal attack is disruptive. Drecker 21:30, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I am no expert; I don't even have a high school diploma. I'm just a guy who sleuths the Internet for information, adds it to Wikipedia, and cites it. I do feel a bit dirty about citing a work from the 40s, but its authors were great authorities over the subject than some of the modern sources available. I also feel a bit dirty about citing of all interested parties the Egg Council. However, since then, I have gotten a subscription to a database of books which will allow me to do further research on the matter than before. I'll see what I can do about it. —Signed, your friendly neighborhood MessedRocker. 01:26, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:OscarHammersteinII.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:OscarHammersteinII.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. ExNoctem

[edit]

Dear MessedRocker,

First, I want to apologize for anything done under my account in the last month and a half or so. My account has been compromised, but I do not know how, when or why. If you take a look at my user page, you will find it no longer exists, and my discussion page is a two-line dialogue between myself and (presumably) my assailant. I am in fact the one who tried to help you translate the French Phalanx page, and I had full intentions of editing it now. However, my password has been changed, and I am feeling completely violated at this point. I do not have an email address, so I suspect this to be the only place we can discuss this. I do not know what to do; is it possible to completely block an account from even being accessed? I assume I would have to make another account. Anyway, you were the only admin I've ever really communicated with at all, and I did not know who else to go to. Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely, (former) ExNoctem

I indefinitely blocked it as a compromised account. Unless you can find a way to secure access to it, you will have to get a new account. Signed, your friendly neighborhood MessedRocker. 20:24, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, do I feel like an idiot. Turns out someone created a user account under Exnoctem (as compared to ExNoctem; check 'em out) and posted the aforementioned dialogue on that discussion page. When I was trying to login, it would not let me because I had not capitalized the N, but it kept clearing the password field, so I thought the password was what I had to correct.
However, they still had my first and last names posted on that page, so I am still curious where they learned that. Anyway, thanks for the concern. Maybe I could help with a few translation pages... as soon as my account is unlocked. Is that possible ? If so, don’t rush yourself, you can see how often I actually log in to make edits. If not, thanks for the help.
Sincerely, (former) ExNoctem
P.S.: If you need confirmation that this actually is ExNoctem, I'll leave a post here (while I'm signed in) as soon as I am able.
P.P.S. (or is it P.S.S.?): I'll change my password anyway... no point in actually risking being compromised.
I unblocked the account. And it's PPS, for post-postscript. (messedrocker • talk) 00:33, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! -ExNoctem 20:41, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit]

So, the discussion at Talk:Arbuthnot seems to have petered out. Can the protection (which came prematurely anyway, I think) be lifted now? Thanks. -- JHunterJ 11:06, 7 June 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Theobromine GA nomination

[edit]

Hi, You said you were maybe going to add a couple of things yeaterday. What were they? I've more or less decided to pass the article, but I think I should wait until you've finished with the updates. I carried out a couple of minor edits of grammar and explaining Jargon.

WHat I see in the French article which doesn't seem to be fully covered are the side-effects:

ANOREXIE (CERTAIN ) NAUSEE (CERTAIN ) VOMISSEMENT (CERTAIN ) DOULEUR EPIGASTRIQUE (CERTAIN )

and the prescription quantities which suggest to me that a 100gm bar of strong chocolate is equivalent to a relevatively large dose. Once they're mentioned and you've doen whatever else you were intending, I would be reacy to pass the article.--Peter cohen 14:55, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update. Just a couple of points
    • Would the "Uses" section be better called "Clinical Uses"? That what seems to be in it.
    • Have explanations of vasodilator, myocardial stimulant etc. where they are first mentioned. I think the names of chemicals and their families are virtually impossible to paraphrase but the medical jargon is more explicable. Nb clicking stimulant doesn't mention effects on particular muscle sets as a type of stimulant.
    • To a person who doesn't know much biology the last two sentences would seem to contradict each other. Give an idea how teratogenesis is different from genetic mutation. And note that the link on teratogen is a double redirect.
Wikipedia:Explain jargon is in my view now the only good article criterion which the article is not passing. --Peter cohen 20:35, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I found a bit more jargon to explain and have tried to do so. Please check my latest changes. These include one insertion of the word "other" where you said that there was low birth weight for rabbits after gavage but not after administration of theobromine. which hopefully makes it less confusing. It's getting late here, but I shall inspect the article again in the morning in case you wanted to amend my alterations.--Peter cohen 21:49, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Following you rlast comment I have raised my changes on the GA nominees talk page. The consensus is that my changes don't prevent me from passing it. Nice to do business with you. --Peter cohen 19:22, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Given that you have prior involvement with these issues, I suggest you leave the close up to someone else. JoshuaZ 19:02, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that you've made a fair number of comments about your attitude towards BLP-penumbra/courtesy deletions. Actually, funny thing about that- I initially wasn't giving my opinion since I wasn't sure and then I started drafting a close for deletion figuring among other things that since I had argued for keeping in the previous AfD a well-explained delete from me would be likely to not be overturned and end this drama. But then while writing it, it became more and more apparent to me that I just wasn't convinced. But of course, it would be inappropriate for me to close as a keep given my previous involvement. Hence my very long comment arguing for keeping- that was by and large cut and pasted from my best attempt to make a deletion close. Ah well... JoshuaZ 23:39, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like A Man In Black has taken on the closing. Newyorkbrad 23:41, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome

[edit]

You should know that you're asking someone who currently can't be arsed to finish the primidone article to make plans like that. If I could just My current "plan" consists of sticking articles that look like they're going to crapped on onto your page if I happen to think they're especially worthy or if they strike my fancy. I'm going to do that with William Shakespeare and I'm probably going to do that with all the vital and core articles that don't look FARC-worthy.

By the way, they don't all have to be featured do they? I was under the impression that they had to be but I'm not always right.--Rmky87 12:46, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know.--Rmky87 15:59, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you purge everything from before 2007?--Rmky87 16:14, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. By the way, are you looking for new good versions then? I was tempted to post the 2006 version of caffeine except for the fact that had 20 fewer citations, even if it did have no tags.--Rmky87 16:20, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll just look for the most recent revision with a trusty-looking name.--Rmky87 16:24, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for unblock Stephen Barrett

[edit]

I know that there is a huge controversy about this article. However, it has mostly been confined to the talk page and the activity on the article itself has been less conflict ridden. The article has now been blocked for almost two weeks. Considering that the “edit war” that led up to the block was less than 50 edits, with most edits in good faith, I think the block can be lifted. The message to the involved editors has been loud and clear. MaxPont 17:15, 25 June 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Spelling of guarana

[edit]

Do you have a reference to it having an accent? English never has accents. This is the English wikipedia...

Dictionary.com lists it without an accent.WolfKeeper 17:41, 27 June 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Guarana spelling

[edit]

Well for a start, the spelling of "guarana" vs. "guaraná" in a Googlefight is about neck-and-neck: [3]. This link uses the spelling with the diacritic. I saw the "guaraná" spelling used frequently throughout the guaraná article and I figured it is technically the correct spelling, as the "guarana" spelling was invented by English speakers for the sake of a diacritic-free word. Winpak

[edit]

Why did you delete the Winpak article? I put a hang on header on it while I continue to add to it. It is one the largest companies based in Manitoba and one of the largest publicly listed companies of its kind in North America. jdobbin 07:29, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I am trying to make sure that all the Winnipeg and Manitoba companies are properly referenced. It is taking some time. jdobbin 07:33, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Hikkup

[edit]

Hi,I would like to know why the Hikkup article was deleted considering that there was a hang header on it, along with a talk page which clearly states that more info is coming soon. As mentioned on that page this is by no means an attempt to spam anyone, I am trying to document messaging services in the web 2.0 context. Kamokazi 19:43, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Pointless article"

[edit]

"Pointless article" (Languages of India and Pakistan) is not a criteria for speedy deletion. Would you please restore that and prod it instead? 75.18.209.48 19:48, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't, but it still fulfills criterion A3: No content whatsoever. Any article consisting only of links elsewhere (including hyperlinks, category tags and "see also" sections), a rephrasing of the title, and/or attempts to correspond with the person or group named by its title. (messedrockertalk) 20:01, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I will have to take your word for it because I can't read it. I wish I could. What harm would a prod be? 75.18.209.48 09:20, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I undeleted the page, because there's an edit history that needs to be kept around. This is what the article was that's still in the history. MessedRocker (talk) 18:12, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mediation

[edit]

I'm not sure if it's right to comment on a mediation you've agreed to carry out[4]. But one of the parties in this case ia an adminstrator - I'd rather hope he'd not involve himself in a straightforward partisan discussion, as I detect this one to be. Surely this is the purview for other editors (of whom we have lots)? As a none-too-experienced editor myself, one of my big disappointements is that administrators have failed (or even refused) to comment authoritatively on the real policies we're trying to operate.
