Please provide specific examples of "toxicity" in my work or withdraw the accusation

I note your intervention on my talk page and object in the strongest possible terms to what I take to be an attack on my character. I am not familiar with the byzantine workings of wikipedia's system of abuse correction, so I do not know how to report you or make a formal protest to the authorities about your posting. @Bramble window: Acting as uninvolved administrator, I informed you that I see problems with your conduct, specifically that by using talk pages to express your personal opinions on editors and the subject matter you have contributed to toxic atmosphere on GamerGate-related talk pages and asked you to bear that in mind going forward. I also said that I did not intend to take any action for the time being because I didn't think your conduct warranted it; if I did think your conduct warranted it in future, I could impose sanctions including a ban from editing GamerGate-related articles or block you from editing entirely, so I thought it was only fair to inform you that I saw a problem and give you chance to correct it, rather than dropping sanctions on you out of the blue. Thanks, and a question

Thanks for blocking those three socks at Manuel Uribe. I had suspected all three came from the same person. Not being an admin (and not seeking to become one in the near future), how can I be more proactive in such cases? In cases like that, where it's that obvious and the accounts are all vandals anyway, you can just report them all to AIV and explain that they're all related. As long as you make the connection clear, and make it clear that they're vandals as well as socks—as a rule of thumb, if it takes more than a minute to analyse an AIV report, either it's too complex for AIV or the reporter hasn't provided enough information. For less obvious cases, SPI is the place to go to get the socking properly investigated. And you can always file a request at RfPP; you might get a brief protection as a stopgap or the admin might look into it and block the accounts. The trouble is that the SPI can potentially take days and RfPP is likely to take several hours, so the only thing I can suggest for attracting admin eyes is to drop a note on AN or ANI or to drop me a note here—if I'm asleep (as I should be now!), a few hundred people watch this page and many of them will be admins, so they might be willing to look into it. Dear Mr. Wales,

I am a graduate of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, and have a BA in Mass Communications (i.e. journalism). Your acceptance of the $500,000 in Dubai is the subject of discussion among Emiratis who are not in agreeance with the current state of affairs in the UAE as it relates to human rights and freedom of speech.

The Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Award which came with the $500,000 prize is named after Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the "ruler" of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE. From the positions he holds in the UAE, he is partly responsible for the current state of human rights in my country. I see that posters above are bringing to your attention the abysmal human rights record in this country. They, and you, are likely well versed in the state of labor rights in the UAE. They have not, however, brought up the situation in the UAE on freedom of speech, and therefore the ability of those in the UAE to freely disseminate knowledge, and this goes to the core in showing how absurd the award is.

Mr. Wales, please consider the following cases:

  1. In 2012, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation was forced to close its office in Abu Dhabi. Their mission is the promotion of “promotion of freedom and liberty, peace, and justice”. The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs also had its Dubai office closed by the authorities. No legitimate reason was given for the closure.   2. In 2012, Assistant Professor of Communication Matt J. Duffy had his contract at Zayed University cancelled and he was deported from the country. Mr. Duffy helped to found a campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and attempted to teach students journalistic ethics and standards. Mr. Duffy wrote about this at http://mattjduffy.com/2012/08/ive-been-kicked-out-of-the-united-arab-emirates/. Mr. Duffy also offers reasons for the termination of his employment and deportation at http://mattjduffy.com/2012/08/top-18-things-that-may-have-gotten-me-booted-from-the-uae/.
  3. In 2014, Yasin Kakande was fired from The National and deported from the country for writing the autobiographical book The Ambitious Struggle: An African Journalist's Journey of Hope and Identity in a Land of Migrants (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ambitious-Struggle-Journalists-Identity-Migrants/dp/189035743X/ref=la_B00GU54WOO_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1418300730&sr=1-1). Mr. Wales, please take the time to read this book, which is banned in the UAE (http://www.migrant-rights.org/research/uae-censors-author-of-book-criticizing-migrant-race-issues/).

There is another case you may not be familiar with. The UAE 94 is a group of 94 lawyers, judges, human rights activists and others, who have spoken out in favour of democracy in my country. The dissidents are members of Al Islah, a non-violent political group, and do have an affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood. I do not agree with the politics of this group, I am myself an atheist (a capital offense in my country). However, I do agree with their non-violent stance, and I do believe in their rights to call for democracy in this country. This group has been subjected to arbitrary detention, torture and trials which have been deemed to be unfair by the international community (http://english.al-akhbar.com/node/19106). On March 17, Osama Najjar was arrested (http://twitmail.com/email/533078805/901/533078805) because he spoke out on Twitter (https://twitter.com/O_Hussain_) about these abuses. One week prior to your visit to the UAE, Osama was imprisoned for 3 years and fined 500,000 dirhams for speaking out. There is no freedom in the UAE Mr. Wales.

I appreciate greatly that you have committed yourself to ensuring that the $500,000 which was awarded to you in the name of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum will go toward advancing human rights in the Arab world. I also appreciate that you have committed part of your cause to include open data access, but sincerely Mr. Wales, what good is pushing for open data in this region, when the region is not open in terms of freedom of the press and human rights. There are many groups which are fighting for basic human rights in the UAE and some of them, as noted above, do have some links to some unsavoury groups. My suggestion to you Mr. Wales is to make contact with Mr. Duffy and Mr. Kakande and ask for their advice and guidance.

I do have one simple request for you Mr. Wales. When you donate the $500,000 please do so openly by putting out press releases on these donations. There is no stronger message that you can send to the regime in my country, and others in Arab world, than publicly declaring that you stand with the people who do not enjoy basic human rights. This will send a strong message to governments that they can not place a price on human rights and for the silence of the West.

We, the people, of the United Arab Emirates, thank you Mr. Wales for your commitment to helping us gain basic human rights and we trust the organisations you will donate the $500,000 to will put the money to good use.

I do that if the material has personally identifying information or is otherwise sensitive (e.g., a suicide threat). If it's just grossly offensive, dropping a note to an active admin usually does the trick. --NeilN talk to me 16:31, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

RevDel (WP:REVDEL) is a revision delete, performed by sysops. It can be viewed or restored by any sysops (or Stewards). Oversight (WP:Oversight) is a complete hide from the DB, performed by Ocersighters. It can be viewed by Oversighters only. — Revi 01:54, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Actually, the 'complete hide from the database' method id deprecated, as I understand it (and was nigh impossible to reverse). "Suppression" is the latest bit of newspeak, which is basically RevDel, but oversigthers have an option labelled "hide from administrators", which ... does what it says on the tin. To anybody without the admin bit, an edit that is REVDELled and an edit that is suppressed look identical in page history, watchlists and contribs (the middle edit of these three was suppressed); there is no indication as to which of the two was used. If you look at the page's deletion log, you'll find that REVDELs are logged in there, but suppressions are not; if an edit is REVDELled and then suppressed, the log shows the first action and not the second (like this).
To an admin, the two methods are clearly different when viewing the history, etc.: the REVDELled edit has the usual diff links (cur/prev/whatever), a suppressed edit hasn't; and in a page history, the pair of radio buttons for the "Compare selected revisions" feature are selectable for a REVDELled edit, but greyed out for a suppressed edit.
If you need an edit to be suppressed, there's a link in the first box at the top of WP:OVERSIGHT, it goes to Special:EmailUser/Oversight - bash off an email, there's somebody on duty around the clock; and you'll get a reply inside a couple of hours either letting you know that your wish has been granted, or explaining why it's not going to be done. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:01, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

i did not say that. I am not talking about "lol". I am talking about the contributions, where he wrote vulgar words like here "murshed k. p", which means son of the b.... Please delete them for ever. None, except admins can click in cur or prev, something called "delete the revision text". I think you understood.

Thanks for the email, very informative, and inspirational! I laughed out loud to "Azerbaijani Wikibooks". Maybe stewardship isn't so desirable! Anyway, I wanted to say this on-wiki: I have made a rewrite of the protection.js that excludes the tagging, which Twinkle offers for us. The script also adds similar functionality for WP:AIV and WP:PERM/R, where administrator notation templates are used. Meanwhile it is less than half the size of protection.js! Ooh, that is handy! I miss the sidebar link to RfPP (but that's a minor quibble; I'm sure you or somebody else could write a bit of javascript or CSS to replace that. In fact, a sidebar link to AIV would be lovely while I'm thinking about it). More seriously, though, it's not actually doing anything—I've tried it on AIV, RfPP, and PERM/R. Uh oh! I tested this out on Vector and MonoBook using Chrome and Firefox. What browser are you using? The script is pretty straightforward, I'm trying to think what wouldn't work in older browsers. Just so you know, on AIV it inserts the template where your cursor is, but you probably figured that much. Putting it at the end would not be very useful. I can add links to RFPP, AIV and PERM if you'd like, very easy. Also I made the order of the links match that of the list of templates in the show/hide thing on each page. I just tried monobook, using Windows 7 / Chrome 39, importing User:HJ Mitchell/monobook.js in my JS and everything worked as expected. I don't see anything in your metawiki global.js, so I don't think it's a conflict with another script. The operating system shouldn't matter, but I assume you're using either Windows or Mac?
I just changed the selector for the wikieditor to be the same as protection.js, maybe you have a gadget enabled that changes the markup or something. Does it work now? — MusikAnimal talk 01:54, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

@MusikAnimal: It's not weird; you did not receive that ping because HJ didn't get it right first time and went back to correct it - corrections don't retrigger a failed notification. The notification feature is delicate, and easily broken: they are not sent when links or sigs are amended, only when new valid links and sigs are added simultaneously. I'm not sure that's really necessary. The block wasn't made under the provisions of the community sanctions, and I didn't follow any of those procedures—I blocked them for socking; that they were socking to disrupt the GamerGate topic are was incidental. I suppose it was an aggravating factor that they were socking in a controversial topic area, but I'd have taken the same action if they'd behaved like that in any topic area. I'd rather it wasn't logged there because then it would be out of process—blocks under the community sanctions can only be for up to a year, whereas this is likely to be permanent; I didn't use the relevant template or inform them that the block was in accordance with the community sanctions; and I didn't intend for the block to appealable via the community sanctions process as they have a lot more to answer for than just disrupting the GamerGate area. I see the community sanctions as being useful when dealing with misconduct that might not otherwise be sanctionable or when you're dealing with an established editor who might be unblocked on whim were it not for the stricter appeals process, but SPAs who create sockfarms and impersonation accounts can just be indef'd and forgotten about. This editor has a long history of disruption (195.89.201.254 is now serving his 5th block, 92.238.171.3 is now serving his 4th block, while Magyarcsaba was twice blocked in the past (the second block lasted for 1 year and was instated because he "continued lame edit-warring on same issues as before, right after coming back from 6-months topic ban")

The evidence that Magyarcsaba = 195.89.201.254 = 92.238.171.3, are clear:

  • Magyarcsaba restored today a disruptive edit of 92.238.171.3 from 3 days ago.
  • In November 2014 92.238.171.3 restored a diruptive edit made by Magyarcsaba, which had bveen reverted by User:No such user
  • Magyarcsaba and 92.238.171.3 reverted alternatively during the January 2013 edit war from the article Cluj-Napoca railway station
  • 92.238.171.3 and a made the same edit at Cluj-Napoca: [2] [3]
  • 92.238.171.3 and Magyarcsaba made the same edit at Štúrovo

Hi, Kumioko/Reguyla has raised a concern (which is probably valid) that you're perhaps getting too involved taking administrative action regarding Thomas.W and his departure. I understand (and share) your frustration at the way he has been treated by the community and the way he has been baited since his departure, but please don't get yourself into trouble dealing with people who are only out to stir up shit and cause trouble. There's plenty of uninvolved admins who would be more than happy to deal with users like User:Adamfinmo. I say this out of concern for you, rather than in any administrative capacity, btw. I appreciate the concern, and I can see the line of thought, but I think this falls under the "any reasonable admin" exception even if we disregard common sense, and I was confident that the block would sand up to scrutiny, as indeed it did. Hello, HJ Mitchell. Sorry for the awkward title, but it was all I could easily come up with. To get to the point, you have Blocked and then Unblocked DungeonSiegeAddict510 in addition to telling DSA to not edit any GamerGate articles. The issue I have is that none of this was added to the Log of Admin actions on Wikipedia:General sanctions/Gamergate. My question is was it not considered to be a sanction due to GamerGate for reasons or was it just something that got overlooked and it needs to be added? Salmazanaty ANI

Hey m'man, may I trouble you to take a look at my open ANI report on Salmazanaty? I reported this person several days ago, but the report was archived for lack of admin response. This seems like a pretty easy-peasy case--the user is a hoaxster and adds garbage to articles. I normally would go through AIV for this sort of thing, but sometimes admins get weird and lazy and make me go to ANI with these more detailed cases, and then the reports sit around and go stale. (Vent vent vent). Anyhow, if you could take a look at it, or have someone you know and love look at it, I would be appreciative. I've re-reported it at ANI with a link to the archive. Thank you, sir! We can't permaban IPs. It's against policy because IP addresses are re-allocated periodically and there's risk that this one could end up being assigned to somebody else. My hunch was that it was somehow related to one of the Jetix vandals, but they report back as a BSkyB IP and not the American ones that seem to be infatuated with me. Template:Rangeblock protection

Generally only for templates used in MediaWiki pages rather than the dropdown lists (though there would probably be an argument for the very highly used ones such as anonblock or blocked proxy, but that's another discussion).
