File permission problem with File:Richard Van Gelder, Mozambique, 1973.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Richard Van Gelder, Mozambique, 1973.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to [email protected], stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to [email protected].

F&SF[edit]

Thanks for the edits to the F&SF article; I assume from your username that you know what you're talking about. I'm hoping to get the article to featured status, which would make it eligible to be on the front page of Wikipedia for a day. F&SF cover copyrights[edit]

I saw your note here about the copyrights; I was wondering about that as it seemed unlikely the copyrights would not have been renewed. I assume all covers are copyrighted?

The usual way to find an online proof of copyright is to go here and search; for everything except the first issue the F&SF results should be in the database. I was unable to find that cover listed in there -- can you find it? Or can you give me a bit more information on what to search for? I tried searching for just the title and couldn't see it.

Thanks for the offer of licensing the covers. Images used on Wikipedia are of two types: fair use, and images uploaded to Wikipedia Commons. "Fair use" means that there's no change to the copyright status, but Wikipedia can use the image anyway because it's a reasonable use of a copyrighted image. Typically this would allow us to use, say, the image of the first issue in an article on a magazine, and perhaps other cover images if they are specifically discussed in the article. Images on Wikipedia Commons are ones for which either the copyright has expired, or the owner has released the images under certain licenses. However, there are minimum requirements -- see this page, particularly the "Acceptable licenses" section. If you're willing to release any of the covers under these licenses that would be great, but they're all irrevocable and they all allow free use to any other user, so you may not wish to do that.

Either way I'd be glad to help, both in getting rid of the incorrectly licensed existing cover scans, and in helping get the licensing sorted out if you decided you do want to release any covers. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:38, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
