Re: Guantanamo related articles

Hey, Geo. Glad you are alive and well, and while I suppose you don't remember me, our paths have crossed before. As a WP:Preservationist, the vast number of articles you've created that have been sent to WP:AFD long ago caught my eye, and I subscribed to your talk-page years ago (although I'm semi-retired as an editor). Unfortunately, I don't really have the tools and/or cultural background to bring the Gitmo prisoner articles up to snuff, although I think they should be kept around whenever possible. Editors who cry about WP:BLP1E for people who are languishing in prison -- quite perhaps unjustly -- for their crimes I think are really shedding crocodile tears, and I've had to plow through this phenomenon a few times myself (e.g. with Troy Anthony Davis and Ryan Holle). Sourcing out Rob Wyda was easy, but dealing with people with 5 names and 6 aliases? I find the whole exercise too tricky. So besides making a quick attempt to nip the latest round of deletion in the bud, I don't really have too much more to offer here. Sorry! -- Kendrick7^talk 02:59, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Bagram detainees

Hey, so I just tripped up on a list of the Bagram detainees. I think you might have spent some time making some articles on them, and I realize that, 3 years later, they remain orphans with no new information. Are you opposed to having them redirected back to Detainees held in the Bagram Theater Internment Facility or is there another option that might work that you considered in the past? I think you are wondering whether some individual bagram captives are insufficiently notable to merit articles on them -- and are wondering whether articles on those individuals should be merged and redirected into Detainees held in the Bagram Theater Internment Facility. The short answer is that they should be. The wikipedia's standards are more stringent now, and this kind of merge and redirect is appropriate. Some Bagram detainees, on the other hand, really are sufficiently notable, even under those more stringent standards.

Should you go ahead and merge and redirect articles on individuals you think aren't notable enough for an individual article? Sure, go ahead. You probably know that you didn't have to give me a heads-up. But I do appreciate you discussing it with me, so we aren't working at cross-purposes.

Some of the articles on Bagram captives may be so brief that there is little to nothing to merge because the key details are already in the list article. But beware, there was a very active contributor, User:Iqinn, who was finally indefinitely blocked for unrepentant edit-warring, who may have excised vast portions of some of these articles -- for specious reasons. One specious justification Iqinn employed was due to genuine or convenient misunderstandings of what constituted WP:PRIMARY and WP:SECONDARY references, and when and how wikipedia policies and guidelines recommended primary references be used.

If an individual claims they are innocent, for instance, a primary reference is allowed to serve as substantiation for writing that they claimed they were innocent. The part that Iqinn got right was that claiming to be innocent doesn't in and of itself add to an individual's notability. When a secondary source, like one of the famous innocence projects repeats the claim, the claim becomes notable -- based on the secondary sources that repeat his claim, or that challenge it.

Iqinn would excise all mention of the innocence claim, and all mention of allegations, and all mention that there had even been an administrative review of that individual. That is not a concern in the list article, as the notability of the topic of the list article is already firmly established, and used with proper attribution, and in other ways conformant to policy, the primary references Iqinn excised from the individual articles, can be used in the list article.

If you decided to work on this let me know when you start, and I will keep an eye on your contribution history. Thanks for asking for my opinion. On the strength of that, can I let you know when I think an article you have merged really does deserve a stand-alone article?
