Guild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC.

Current events

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests.

Drive and blitz reports

March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020.

Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page.

Using rollback

Regarding RedWarn - you might want to request rollback permissions over at WP:RFP/R, then, once successful, changing RedWarn's rollback method in your preferences from "rollback-like" to "rollback". It does make a slight speed difference, which may be convenient for your counter-vandalism efforts. Ed6767 talk! 00:30, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

@Ed6767: Well, you're the developer, so if you think it's necessary, then I'd say go for it! If you really want to know my personal opinion, though, I'd question whether it is necessary. That's just my personal view of the matter, though. Rollback granted

Hi GalaxyDog. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Anarchyte, I have a question, if you don't mind: it says on Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback that "... [rollback] should not be used for edits that were made in good faith (even if problematic)." However, does this still apply if I'm adding a edit summary to the rollback through a tool such as RedWarn? The reason I'm asking this is because RedWarn has an option to add an edit summary to your rollback (if the edits you're rolling back are not vandalism/nonconstructive). One of the reasons I requested this permission was so I can enable the "rollback" setting in the preferences of RedWarn, rather than "rollback-like" (what I was using before), so I think it will take unnecessary time to switch back to "rollback-like" if I see a good-faith edit that still needs to be reverted. In short: does this rule still apply if there is an appropriate edit summary along with the rollback, added through an external tool? Thanks, —GalaxyDogtalk • contribs 14:34, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

If it's a good-faith edit, it cannot be reverted with rollback without an edit summary (but then that would defeat the purpose of rollback being a one click undo button). Revert good-faith edits with the undo button. Anarchyte (talk • work) 17:21, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
@Anarchyte: Yes, but I'm not talking about the core rollback feature — I'm talking about using rollback with RedWarn, which allows you to add an edit summary. For example, this revert of mine. Even though it has an edit summary that I typed in, it has the "rollback" tag. Correct. The edit being tagged with rollback doesn't mean anything, really. The one-click rollback should only be used for vandalism, but any other forms of rollback (Twinkle, RedWarn, etc) that might tag with rollback but allow for edit summaries are fine for other uses, too. You removed one of my edits???

You removed one of my edits (see link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:170.253.105.132). This was NOT a test. I can't remember which edit it was, as I don't remember editing the page, but I don't do test edits. All edits I make are intentional, and in the case of these sorts of pages, is very often to remove racist language, as Indigenous pages are absolutely abundant with them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.253.105.132 (talk) 07:45, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
