Mount Royal[edit]

Standard has it that the federal district does not need further diambiguation. When the provincial district article is created than it will be at Mount Royal (provincial electoral district). -- Earl Andrew - talk 05:48, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's just that the federal ridings are more important :-). Remember, other provinces have ridings with the same names, so this has been discussed before. Frankly, I cannot remember if I counted your vote, but I fear that I did not, in which case I apologize. You're right that I should have.

I might not have closed the VfD if it was 4-2; however, apart from the 4 clear delete votes, I also count the nomination as a delete vote, and in the discussion at the bottom of the page there's another valid delete by Blackcap. Ballparks[edit]

I see you're adding a section on former ballparks. Kudos! Now, a suggestion... I like to keep things simple. When teams built new structures on existing sites, they often renamed the park or dated the park from the construction date. In my view, that's marketing hype. Example: Tiger Stadium, which is typically dated from 1912, except when it's convenient, like when they were getting ready to leave, and tried to pump up attendance by talking about "Baseball at the Corner since 1896". Well, whatever they want to call it, Bennett Park or Navin Field or Briggs Stadium or Tiger Stadium, it's all the same block of land, and I think it should be listed as a single site, 1896-1999. Another example is the South End Grounds, which was the Braves' home from 1871 through 1914, no matter how many times they rebuilt it or burned it and gave it different names. Similarly, the Polo Grounds, whose diamond stayed in the same place while they rebuilt around it. They dated it from 1911, but the right date should be 1890. And the Crosley Field site, which the Reds occupied from 1884 or some such through part of 1970. Anyway, that's my view. I contend that they should not have separate articles. Those early ballpark articles tend to be small, because there is little to be said about them. I did combine the so-called "Philadelphia Baseball Grounds", a small article, into the "Baker Bowl" article, and then redirected the former to the latter. If it depends on the location of the diamond, you could indeed argue that Tiger Stadium is a different ballpark from Bennett Park; that Redland-Crosley Field is a different park from Palace of the Fans; etc. Yet you've got Sportsman's Park as the home of the Cardinals during the 1880s and from 1920-1966, and of the Browns from 1902-1953, when in fact the diamond was in the southeast corner during the 1880s, the northwest corner during the early 1900s, and the southwest corner from 1908 onward. But the name was not changed, so the three "different ballparks" tend to be regarded as one. Meanwhile, if you've seen photos of the Reds' 1880s ballpark, they actually retained the original grandstand on the southeast corner as a right field pavilion when they built their "Palace of the Fans" and relocated the diamond to the southwest corner. Yet some sources regard them as different ballparks, even though the very same thing was done in St. Louis in 1908. The Reds replaced the entire structure in 1912, of course, the year from which they tended to date their ballpark. Meanwhile, the Indians, Giants and Senators used to date League Park, Polo Grounds and Griffith Stadium respectively from 1910, 1911 and 1911 again because that's when the concrete structures were built, even though the location of the diamond did not change from the earlier structures... and in the case of the first two, the name did not change either. It's these kinds of inconsistences that can be resolved by simply going by location, and reporting these chronological details within the article, rather than going by position of the diamond, naming, or whatever hype the club wanted to use (or not use) at some time or another. Oops, you already did it. OK, now a little bit of a history lesson... The Senators played at a different location, called American League Park, during 1901-02 or 03 or some such. Then they moved into an older site, which was once called National Park (the team having been called the Nationals) and it became Griffith Stadium at some point on or after it was rebuilt in concrete. Also, regarding Baltimore, the minor league Orioles stopped playing at the earlier Oriole Park after the 1915 season and moved into the abandoned Federal League facility, Terrapin Park, which was right across the street, in 1916. They renamed it as a newer Oriole Park. When it burned in mid-1944, they moved into Municipal Stadium, a football stadium which was laid out kind of like the diamond in the L.A. Coliseum later, with a short left field and a deep right field. The diamond was in the northwest "corner" of the field of the horseshoe-shaped stadium, whose open end was to the south. The structure was rebuilt as Memorial Stadium in the late 1940s. They actually built the new stadium in sections around the ballfield during the season, starting at the south end and slowly obliterating the previous stadium, until the new horseshoe, with its open end to the north, was sufficiently ready for them to relocate the diamond from the northwest corner to its final location at the south end of the new oval. Looks pretty good. I corrected the end-year on the early Oriole Park. If anyone wonders what happened with the minor league O's during 1916-44, they'll find out all about it on the Memorial Stadium page. I'm guessing you don't really want to get into lists of the Federal League Parks for the most part, or the many extinct teams of the 19th century, but just the linear histories of the current teams. hello this is in accordance with laune anderssohn. i play in the band and have been playing with a notable rock band, the dears who are hugely successfull in not only north america but europe as well, playing to crowds of over 100 000 people at festivals, www.thedears.org for any info on validity. this is a notable group people, we are a band making waves and spreading rapidly, yet it seems the dears factor, the keep posts, the 2 countrieds toured, the three re cords, the 800 plus hits on google, the records in radio stations across canada dont seem to matter in the voting process even thoughwe met all the criteria for being kept. this bearcat fellow does not seem to have any notability under his belt. yet he is still on this site, we are a hard working ground breaking band that has been deleted for what i believe is more the content of our music than the actual suggested reasons. please consider us for undeletion (65.94.191.240 03:53, 30 August 2005 (UTC))thank you --65.94.191.240 03:53, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Montreal East[edit]

You say that Montreal East is the most common name in English. I say it's Montréal-Est. How do we resolve? I don't think I've heard anyone call it Montreal East, (except perhaps those over the age of retirment who still call Deux-Montagne, "Lake of Two Mountains", de la Montagne "Mountain Street" and Trois-Rivieres "Three Rivers"; or those who have never stepped foot in the place).

Normally I'd say, what do English people living in Montreal East currently call it ... but I've never met any! Or what does the town/city itself call itself in English ... but I don't think it operates in English. Have you any good references? All I can suggest is Google, that finds about 30,000 hits for "Montreal East" and 40,000 or so for Montreal-Est (both when restricting searches to English-language pages).
