Really? People can call themselves anything they choose. The linguistic origin of a name has nothing to do with the ethnic or geographic origins of the person bearing the name. My name is William, does that mean I am a Norman invader from France? Or a Holy Roman Prince destined to become the ancestor of the Netherlands Monarchy? Or maybe a Gaelic King of Scotland? No, it just means my parents named me William. The Khmer Empire (and in fact, most of Southeast Asia) was heavily influenced by the Indian culture of the time and adopted Sanskrit as a language of religion and government. Consequently, Khmer kings chose their royal names from Sanskrit. It implies no relationship other than that of admiration for the language or culture. Hi William,

I accept you naming formula is not for geographic origins. why I quoted name also. people of the nation can have any name. but kings mostly follow their surname from kingdom origin. 1000 years before the name "varman" popularly used on pallava kings. Pallava's official languages are Tamil,Sanskrit and language where they rule (eg.Khmer).

1) [Some quotes from thehindu.com newspaper links] http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-sundaymagazine/across-space-and-time/article661423.ece

"This huge majestic monolithic image, recently restored and now kept at the entrance of Angkor Wat, is almost identical, in stylistic features,
to the image within the sanctum of the Ashtabhuja Perumal Temple of Kanchi(capital of pallava)"
"It is well known that the use of the honorific title Varman — very common amongst the Pallava kings — was borrowed by the kings of Cambodia.

The first Cambodian king to have this suffix appended to his name was Bhadravarman who lived in the fourth century and thus, was a contemporary of one of the early Pallava rulers of Kanchipuram"

"The beautiful temple of Banteay Srei, around 30km from Angkor Wat,
has many intricately carved Hindu sculptures betraying South Indian influence.
Here, one can see the dancing Shiva (Nataraja) above the main doorway leading to the central sanctum. Close to him,

there is a small, frail female figure that has been identified as Karaikal Ammaiar, the well-known Tamil saint."

"While Sanskrit language and literature spread to Cambodia from different parts of India including South India,
the ornate Grantha (also called Pallava Grantha) script travelled to Cambodia exclusively from the Pallava kingdom. According to scholars,
some of the birudas (titles) of the Pallava kings including Mahendravarman I appear to be in the Khmer language — the language of Cambodia.
Further, Nandivarman Pallavamalla, one of the later Pallava rulers,
is believed to have lived in Cambodia for some years before he travelled to Kanchi to ascend the Pallava throne"

3) First name(angkor) of Angkor Wat is derived from Tamil language. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angkor_Wat

"Angkor Wat, means Temple City or City of Temples in Khmer; Angkor, meaning city or capital city,
is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagara (नगर)"

nagar is tamil word.

Hi William,

It is not personal thoughts.Previously I gave many references. It is hidden history. please study more about Pallava_dynasty. There are similar kings in culture, building. He ruled only with different kingdom name. but their origin is from pallava.

All content in Wikipedia articles must be backed up by reliable sources. There is no scholarly source for this ridiculous notion of yours. Yes, the various kingdoms of Southeast Asia were influenced by Indian thought in the areas of religion, government and culture, that is well-known, but that's as far as any connection goes. Every link you've provided simply says that Angkor (like other contemporary polities) was influenced by Indian thought of the era. None of them say that the Khmer kings were Tamil...that is ludicrous on the face of it and no scholar anywhere in the world (not even in India) would say that. You have been warned already, making such edits without sources to back them up (and that, in fact, contradict every existing source) is considered disruptive editing and you can be blocked for such behavior. Please read and understand No Original Research, synthesis and What is a "Reliable Source" for further guidance.--William Thweatt TalkContribs 10:16, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
