Editing the article about yourself[edit]

Hello E Tarone. Thanks for diving in and contributing to Wikipedia. I note that you've updated a few linguistics articles including the one that appears to be about yourself. You may be unaware that Wikipedia has some guidelines about conflicts of interest. Here's one excerpt:

You should generally refrain from creating articles about yourself, or anyone you know... If you have a personal connection to a topic or person, you are advised to refrain from editing those articles directly and to provide full disclosure of the connection if you comment about the article on talk pages or in other discussions.

There are separate guidelines specifically about Wikipedia:Autobiography:

Writing an autobiography on Wikipedia is an example of conflict of interest editing and is strongly discouraged. Editing a biography about yourself is acceptable only if you are removing unambiguous vandalism or clear-cut and serious violations of our biography of living persons policy.

The section "If Wikipedia already has an article about you" is of particular relevance. Basically, you probably shouldn't edit the Elaine Tarone article unless you're fixing vandalism or correcting some gross factual error. Beyond that, you're welcome to edit Wikipedia articles; just avoid things that might be seen as self-promotion and focus on stuff that improves the encyclopedia's coverage. If the best source to cite for a particular piece of info is one of your own work's that fine, but WP:SELFCITE has some guidance.

You probably won't be surprised that this is all as much about the appearance of a conflict as it is about actual conflicts. Have a read through the guidelines when you get a chance, and if you have questions, post them at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard or Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard.
