Bkissin (talk) 17:31, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Some citation feedback
[edit]I saw your work on 1971 Great Lakes blizzard, and I have some feedback related to how you've formatted citations. Using these footnote as examples:
- Philadelphia Inquirer, Leonard J. McAdams and Gerald McKelvey, writers. (January 28, 1971). "High Winds Spell 23 Below Zero Chill Scale Here". newspapers.com.
{{cite news}}
: CS1 maint: multiple names: authors list (link){{cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/179950640/|title=High Winds Spell 23 Below Zero Chill Scale Here|author=Philadelphia Inquirer, Leonard J. McAdams and Gerald McKelvey, writers.|date=January 28, 1971|website=newspapers.com}}
- The Press and Sun-Bulletin (Binghamton, New York): Final Edition (January 30, 1971). "Lake Storm Leaves Up To Foot Of Snow". newspapers.com.
{{cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/255480142/|title=Lake Storm Leaves Up To Foot Of Snow|author=The Press and Sun-Bulletin (Binghamton, New York): Final Edition|date=January 30, 1971|website=newspapers.com}}
The author parameter is supposed to hold just the name of an author. These templates have hidden metadata encoded into the output, and putting other stuff into an author parameter pollutes the output. To wit:
- Normally we would use
|first=
and|last=
to hold the name of the author. There are also|first2=
and|last2=
(and many more in sequence) if there are multiple authors to be credited. - There is the
|newspaper=
or|work=
parameter to the hold the name of the newspaper. Using it will place the name of the paper in italics. - There is
|location=
to hold the location of a newspaper, which is generally only included when the name of the paper doesn't already include it, like The Press and Sun-Bulletin here. - There is
|edition=
for the edition of a newspaper, if needed. - There is
|page=
(or the plural|pages=
) to notate the page(s) of the paper where the article appeared. The output will have "p." or "pp." in front of the page number(s) as appropriate in the final citation. - While you might have consulted a copy of an article on Newspapers.com, we should put that in
|via=
to indicate that you consulted a copy via that website instead of implying that that website published the paper.- As a side note, Newspapers.com has a clipping feature that allows us to share articles with the general public. If you create a clipping for an article, readers won't need a subscription with Newspapers.com to see the article online.
- If we don't make clippings, we really should add
|url-access=subscription
to let readers know they'll need a subscription to the website to access the source.
- These examples don't have it, but there's
|agency=
to indicate the wire agency for a news story, say if it came from the Associated Press.
To show you what these citations look like more properly formatted:
- McAdams, Leonard J.; McKelvey, Gerald (January 28, 1971). "High Winds Spell 23 Below Zero Chill Scale Here". The Philadelphia Inquirer. p. 1 – via Newspapers.com.
{{cite news |url = https://www.newspapers.com/image/179950640/ |title = High Winds Spell 23 Below Zero Chill Scale Here |work = The Philadelphia Inquirer |first = Leonard J. |last = McAdams |first2 = Gerald |last2 = McKelvey |date = January 28, 1971 |page = 1 |via = Newspapers.com |url-access = subscription }}
- "Lake Storm Leaves Up To Foot Of Snow". The Evening Press (Final ed.). Binghamton, New York. Associated Press. January 30, 1971. pp. 1, 2 – via Newspapers.com.
{{cite news |url = https://www.newspapers.com/image/255480142/ |title = Lake Storm Leaves Up To Foot Of Snow |work = The Evening Press |location = Binghamton, New York |edition = Final |date = January 30, 1971 |agency = Associated Press |pages = 1, [https://www.newspapers.com/image/255480166 2] |via = Newspapers.com |url-access = subscription }}
(I corrected the names of the papers to match how they are printed in the masthead. You can even see how we can link the second page when an article is continued.)
I hope you find this useful. If you have questions, just reply here, and I can help answer them. Imzadi 1979 → 14:14, 18 May 2022 (UTC)
