Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!
[edit]- At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
- To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
- To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.
Apologies for the short notice for this meetup, but let's discuss when, where & what for DC Meetup #17. Also, if you haven't yet, please join wikimedia-dc mailing list to stay informed. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)

Nexus War
[edit]Greetings, you once contributed to a previous AfD on webgame Nexus War, this article is up for deletion again and your input would be appreciated.--Sloane (talk) 00:46, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
Reversion of my edits
[edit]I partially agree with your reversion. The added links were mostly fansites and cannot be counted as reliable per WP:RS. I will not add them back. The image maybe needs further discussion. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 18:44, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
If you don't like the edits I made, then perhaps you should drop by and discuss the ways in which the article can be improved, rather than just deleting things. I've even got a discussion started up here, but neither you nor TheRealFennShysa have had the courtesy of gracing it with a response. -- Jake Fuersturm (talk) 18:56, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Tfuscreenshot.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Tfuscreenshot.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude2 (talk) 06:47, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Star Wars sources
[edit]What sources, do you know, are reliable sources that would likely cover Star Wars articles? - The New Age Retro Hippie used Ruler! Now, he can figure out the length of things easily. 19:30, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well. I'm a fan of Empire of Dreams, the documentary that was packaged with the original trilogy's initial DVD release. Yes, came in a Lucasfilm box, but I think was sufficiently independently-made as to be third-party-enough. NYT and USA Today have both had bouts of significant Star Wars coverage, inc. blurbs in their book reviews that might help with some EU commentary/GNG needs. Beyond that, though, sources tend to be iffy: I'm wary of many things available via Google Books, since many of those are essentially self-published; Google Scholar in general has been useful, though. DK's licensed "reference" books all adopt an in-universe perspective, with real-world details (often just trivia) fleeting. I'm afraid I'm generally drawing a blank on any significant troves of WP:RSes. --EEMIV (talk) 21:00, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've got about 6 sources about character in my sandbox. There's also [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Harry Blue5 (talk • contribs) 21:39, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- Somewhere out there, there's a 10-part retrospective by Gametrailers? IGN? on the various Star Wars video games. Quick and fleeting coverage, but a few worthwhile nuggets. Again, lots of very focused, specific things out there, but no major encyclopedii or some such. --EEMIV (talk) 22:00, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Recent Spock edits
[edit]Hi, just saw the edits you've recently posted. Although I don't necessarily agree with all of them, on balance I think the article is better now than it was a few days ago (excepting the two discussions that I came out on the short end of, of course). I have recently been reminded of what a pain in the butt I must have been when you & I first encountered one another a few years back. Please accept this barnstar both as a long overdue apology and as my way of saying "Thank you" for all of the effort you have put into Star Trek related articles. I'd also like to thank you for continuing to work with me, despite our initial encounter. Guys like you are what make Wikipedia work. Thanks EEMIV. Erikeltic (Talk) 16:10, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks for the heads-up. I've chimed in with my thoughts and links to old discussions on the subject. --EEMIV (talk) 14:56, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
Your post is appreciated. Yes, I have been aware for many years that Wikipedia likes to do things wrongly. In any case I put the edit back the way it was, knowing full well my correction would bug lots of people, much more than a mis-stated fact does. Would it not be nice if this site tried for quality and propriety? Not just appearances? Djathinkimacowboy 14:58, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the correction. When it comes to elements of style, consistency is more important than "right"ness, whatever that means. It's why neither the AP nor Wikipedia is "correct" when it comes to e.g. quote punctuation, and neither the MLA nor the APA is "correct" when it comes to citation format, and neither Wired magazine nor the New York Times is "correct" in whether it capitalizes "internet" or hyphenates "email". Wikipedia's decision to italicize titles of works of art is no more wrong than any other publication style choice. What's more important is that the system has some semblance of consistency -- and, in this case, Wikipedia is consistent in italicizing titles of works of art. If you disagree with Wikipedia's style choice, feel free to bring it up at WT:Manual_of_Style/Titles. --EEMIV (talk) 15:04, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Please comment on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (people)
[edit]Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.
Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (people). Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. In support of that, your contribution should focus on thoughtful evaluation of the issues and available evidence, and provide further relevant evidence if possible.

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Two are now playing, eh?
[edit]I thought I smelled a rat here[22], and should have known it would be you. As I asked the other rat, which episodes would meet your standard as references for my edit? DVdm preaches AGF then hauls you in to assist him in this. I have not forgotten Erikeltic and what he and you tried to do to me.Djathinkimacowboy(yell) 14:46, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Really? *sigh*
- First, there are no "rat"s. Reducing yourself to name-calling is a violation of WP:CIVIL, for which you have been previously warned.
- Second, there is no "hauling." You should not be surprised to know that I have a bunch of Star Trek-related articles on my watchlist. As the other editor pointed out, your first edit was original research. Your rephrasing is still an unsubstantiated generalization. I removed the whole thing because it is in-universe, it is trivial, and it just isn't encyclopedic content.
- Erikeltic and I didn't try to "to do" anything to you. Erikeltic's sockpuppet suspicion may have been incorrect, but the underlying issues about your lack of civility and battleground mentality persist as concerns about your contributions to the project. --EEMIV (talk) 14:56, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
Sigh yourself. You say: "the underlying issues about your lack of civility and battleground mentality persist as concerns about your contributions to the project." If I may apologise- which is more than you ever did- I retract what I have said that is negative. I was tired and angry. If you consider our past, you would have thought better about sticking in your oar at the page in question. Therefore, may I ask you not to lecture me and claim what a horrendous danger I am to Wikipedia. Self-righteousness sounds no better than lack of civility, and I wish Wikipedians like you would learn that. If it pleases you or if it does not, I won't waste another second on this... or on you. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. Nomination of Karen Russell for deletion
[edit]A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Karen Russell is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Karen Russell until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Dennis Bratland (talk) 21:14, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Special:Contributions/EEMIV. 500 edits
- Redirects without discussion
- Actions against consensus of discussion
- Subversion of AfD process
- Use of redirects to bypass the AfD process
- EEMIV seems to think that mentioning proposals at the Star Trek project page gives rights superseding the AfD process. So I guess that makes the others at that project page complicit in this as well. I have seen this sort of behaviour before, but it has always been isolated incidents. This user does it habitually, and seems to have the backing of other editors as well. I think a message needs to be sent, that nowhere in WP:REDIRECT does it say that redirects are what you do with articles you do not like and cannot be bothered to nominate for deletion, or that you think might have a chance of being improved later (as many and various guidelines and essays indicate that stubs are for that purpose).

I stopped after less than a week's worth of Edit History. There is no telling how much material this user has removed from mainspace
- Copies of this message sent to editors who participated in the Ambush AfD: User:Ron Ritzman, User:DGG, User:Jclemens, User:Peregrine Fisher, User:Torritorri, and added to the Talk page of the Star Trek Project page, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Star Trek
- Anarchangel (talk) 00:51, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- Actual response:
- Clone Wars articles: I believe I made those edits in the midst of a broader swath of redirecting and merging episode, comic, and individual book articles across the Star Wars and Star Trek wikiprojects. Didn't see the AfD. *shrug* Everyone seems to have been fine with the redirects for almost two years now.
- Plo Koon: I didn't see a refutation or article edit that the subject fails WP:GNG. Posted a talk-page prod, waited two months, and restored redirect. The original redirect met the community's needs for more than a year.
- Star Trek ships: redirects and merges are the product of months? a year+? of wikiproject talk-page consensus-building. When two specific ship articles were restored, I took it back to the wikiproject talk page to ask for additional input.
- Agatha Christie: stumbled into it after watching Murder on the Orient Express. Most of it consisted of uncited plot summary and WP:OR. So, I trimmed it. Explained the edits on the talk page.
- Talk-page protection: requested it years ago because of IP vandalism. Don't much care either way whether it's there. Feel free to suggest the protection be removed at the page-protection page.
- There is plenty of telling how much material I have removed from main space. You can look at User:EEMIV/Deletions for a starting point. And I'm a maven for redirects for minor characters, devices, and places in fiction. Most of the other editors you copy-and-pasted your observations to, and also the folks who watch the ST wikiproject page, know my editing habits well enough already. And a more thorough examination of my editing habits will also show you plenty of contributions to major improvements and a few GA-status articles about elements of fiction.
- I imagine your post is meant as some kind of clarion call to alert other editors about the damage I've done, and continue to do, and that close scrutiny of subsequent edits (and perhaps an audit of previous ones) would be in order. If that's the case: great. Ron Ritzman, DGG, Jclemens, and Peregrine Fisher are all great editors whose input and collaborative energy I appreciate. (Sorry, Torritorri -- I just don't remember any kind of overlap with you. But maybe that'll change!) --EEMIV (talk) 02:47, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
- As for Star Wars/Star Trek, there's a reason you might not have seen the history: it was a combined nomination and the usual AfD note apparently does not appear in the history of each of the articles. It does appear on the talk page of all of them, however. Now you do know, the proper course is to hold a better discussion at the projects, since its been challenged. My own opinion, btw, is what I said at the AfD--they need either reasonable size articles or proper description in combination articles on the episodes. Some do have reasonably proper descriptions, but some do not, e.g. Rookies. "Alone on a distant outpost, clone officers Rex and Cody must inspire their rookie unit to believe in themselves to stave off a droid commando invasion." That is TV guide writing, not saying what actually happened or how the episode concluded. WP does not do teasers, it gives information. Either way would work, but the current list is very inadequate (the later seasons in it are all of them inadequate, but I don't think they ever were separate articles)
- As for Christie, I reverted and will add the refs. You explained the edits as you couldn't find the information in the sources because you could't reach the sources behind a paywall. Sources do not have to be freely accessible, just accessible, it was really your obligation to try to get the sources from a library first before doing such an extensive deletion. Additionally, I consider 90% of that material straight plot description, and the primary source --the work itself--is the best source for such material. I'll add some additional sources myself, but it may take a week or two. You my want to start a discussion on the sourcing of this sort of material generally, but Christie is not the best test case since there are multiple books on her works, so secondary sources will be added. I know the material on christie fairly well, and, I suppose in a few weeks I will know it a good deal better. DGG ( talk ) 18:21, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Bad revert
[edit]Just letting you know -- you reverted ClueBot here: [23], putting back the bit of vandalism it removed. I've fixed it -- no worries. Just be a little more careful -- though goodness knows I've made plenty of similar mistakes before. Gscshoyru (talk) 21:28, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up. It was odd that I got an email alert in the first place about a page-change. Anyway. Yeah, oops :-). --EEMIV (talk) 21:32, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Vader image
[edit]I removed the image of Darth Vader from your user page. Non-free content is not permitted anywhere other than articles. --EEMIV (talk) 22:48, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Just gotta' love WP's policies on image use... clear as freakin' mud. As it is there, Quickdraw, I found this on Wikimedia Commons (well, same label at least). This particular pic is also found in the Darth Vader article, where it states that it qualifies for Fair use. Isn't there a fair-use exemption for images being used for the purposes of a parody?
- Anyways, I found another pic (that I like better) that has been released to the Public domain. So problem solved. - thewolfchild 23:40, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

The Star Wars character Emperor not being forgiving is a quote from Vader in Return of the Jedi
[edit]The quote "the Emperor is not as forgiving as I am" by the character Darth Vader is well-known, it is from Return of the Jedi.--R-41 (talk) 15:20, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
- I know the quote, and I know it's well known (at least among fans). Your use of it in the Palpatine article, however, is well-intentioned by not encyclopedic. --EEMIV (talk) 15:22, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to wikiFeed
[edit]Hello EEMIV,
I'm part of a team that is researching ways to help Wikipedia editors find interesting content to contribute to Wikipedia. More specifically, we are investigating whether content from news sources can be used to enhance Wikipedia editing. We have created a tool, called wikiFeed, that allows you to specify Twitter and/or RSS feeds from news sources that are interesting to you. wikiFeed then helps you make connections between those feeds and Wikipedia articles. We believe that using this tool may be a lot of fun, and may help you come up with some ideas on how to contribute to Wikipedia in ways that interest you. Please participate! To do so, complete this survey and follow this link to our website. Once you're there, click the "create an account" link to get started.
For more information about wikiFeed, visit our project page. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask via my talk page, or by email at [email protected]. We appreciate your time and hope you enjoy playing with wikiFeed!
Thanks! Jeremey Bentham (talk) 21:21, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

The Smithsonian American Art Museum and Wikimedia DC present the "Masterpiece Museum" Edit-a-Thon. Drawing from their vast vaults of art, the caretakers of the Smithsonian American Art Museum have meticulously drawn forth canvas jewels to import into Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia articles. The museum directors and staff are excited about this project, and would love to have experienced Wikimedians help in the effort! Kirill [talk] 17:59, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:NathalieCoxCloneCam.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:NathalieCoxCloneCam.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:15, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.
Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!
