Bitcoin
[edit]Hi Drmies, —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.186.90.167 (talk) 05:43, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
I am concerned that people are using the bitcoin article to lure victims to "invest" in bitcoins, and are deliberately including highly misleading information. For example, the article seems to assume that "Satoshi Nakamoto" is a real person, when in fact such a person has no web footprint whatsoever. Further, while discussions of the present value of bitcoins is allowed to stay, discussion of the fact that they have risen from six cents in the last ten months and that the price has daily fluctuations of over ten per cent is not mentioned. You look like an upright guy, but I think there are people with a monetary stake in putting misleading information into the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.186.90.167 (talk) 05:41, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't see this earlier--new messages go at the bottom. Thank you for your note, though please do not assume I'm upright, or a guy. Drmies (talk) 00:40, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Drmies,
I'm not watching the program but I'm recording it to watch later.
With respect to the actions of ordinary people, never underestimate the crowd mentality. Sometimes a force for good, sometimes for evil, but too often people in crowds stop thinking for themselves.
Ah, enough philosophizing. I have some vandalism to revert. Talk to you later. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 02:52, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- You know, James Zwerg was a very goodlooking man, even after he got his face kicked in. But you know my favorite, since you helped cleaning it up, James Peck (pacifist). Anyway, Zwerg is here in town on Wednesday; they're finally opening up a museum at the old bus station. I wish I had a better camera, but I'll do my best to take some pictures. Hey, come on down--I'll buy you a hotdog from Chris's on Dexter. Drmies (talk) 03:01, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

It's not possible to delete the article 'Massimo Negrotti'? It creates a conflict with the correct article 'Massimo negrotti' (though the last name should be with N capital). I tried a redirect from 'Massimo Negrotti' to 'Massimo negrotti' and it works but the former page remains. I would like to delete it. Thanks, Max Schwartz —Preceding unsigned comment added by Max Schwartz (talk • contribs) 15:39, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, but that doesn't make any sense. How can 'Massimo Negrotti' be incorrect when 'Massimo negrotti' is correct except for the capital? Anyway, the capitalized version is correct; you shouldn't have made the redirect. I moved the 'negrotti' to 'Negrotti' over the redirect.
But there are other problems: you are the subject, it seems, so I placed a COI tag on it, besides some other templates--the citation style, for instance, is entirely unclear and quite unelegant. I see that an earlier version was likely removed as a copyvio; I hope this one is sufficiently rewritten, and will (hopefully) be rewritten more to comply with our Manual of Style. But thank you for your question. Drmies (talk) 17:58, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- @Max Schwartz, I'm also sorry to find it was the exact same article which was deleted as copyright violation -- with text copied from the website and the lede copied from a book. I have deleted the article because it is foundationally copied text. If you wish to recreate an article about this individual, please do so only using original language. Thanks. — CactusWriter (talk) 18:14, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- CactusWriter, I repeat what I said in a now-deleted edit summary: thanks for keeping an eye out. Not that I appreciate you upping my deleted edits count, but hey, it had to be done. And let's hope that a next (different) version uses any of the many available citation formats used on Wikipedia. Drmies (talk) 18:17, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I did notice your edit summary and was taken aback about your lack of x-ray goggles. For whatever reason, I thought you already... well, you know the line. That needs to be changed -- I think you should be fitted for a pair. Cheers. — CactusWriter (talk) 18:26, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

- IMO, you chose the proper redirect: the team nickname was actual reason for the sit-com episode's title. (Besidea, Langt fra Las Vegas was only okay -- it was certainly no Klovn.) — CactusWriter (talk) 00:32, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Man in the Moone
[edit]Would you please verify that this disambiguation was correct? It wasn't even one of the options on either of the Christ College or Christ's College dab pages, but based on the Francis Godwin article, I think it's correct.
And no, it's not just you. WP's very sluggish for me; I had to reload your talk page a few times to get an edit link. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 21:22, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- Eh, Mandarax--are you using Wikipedia as a source for Wikipedia? You could lose your tenure over that, you know! Anyway, this confirms it as well. I have to go back and pull up the article (through JSTOR, I imagine) to see what "Christ College" really is--maybe I made a mistake. Thanks for your due diligence. Yes, the last few days WP has been frustratingly slow, though you are really trying to tell me, between the lines, that I should archive my talk page. I can read you like a nook, you know. Drmies (talk) 22:25, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hehe, yes, I admit that I didn't research that very thoroughly (but it was just a dab, and you'd already supplied a source). Sorry that my "due diligence" is creating a little extra work for you, due to your due diligence. As for allegations regarding hidden subtext in my note, I must confess that the size of this page was on my mind. (You do get a lot of activity here. And think how much more there'll be when you're an admin....) MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 23:51, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Drmies.
My name is Patrick and I'm a 48 year old male residing in the U.S. I love to write and have just begun 'dabbling' in the Wiki world!
I thank you for your excellent suggestion of using the Preview feature! :) I didn't realize that I would be creating a lot of unnecessary edits unless I use the preview feature prior to doing the actual edit. I'm new at this and still learning and I hope to become much better and to be a contributor in the Wiki community for many years to come! Warmest regards, Patrick —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaos Choir (talk • contribs) 19:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note. (You are also the IP? Don't forget to log in--when you log in, there's a box you can check for "keep me logged in".) Yes, preview is an invaluable tool for proofreading. The problem is that the history gets clogged up with edits and then it is difficult to see who did what when. Listen, if you want to improve that article, the most important thing to do is to find references to reliable sources. It is a BLP, a biography of a living person, and those need strict verification (have a look at the policy and the guidelines). Also, not every fact is relevant (that is, for instance, not every guitar is--they can't all be Blackie or Old Black), and usually such lists of instruments need to have verification for every single one; verification here means to reliable secondary sources. See, for instance, Albert_King#Instruments. So plow through your Guitar Player archives. Good luck, and let me know if I can help. Drmies (talk) 19:54, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Query re: visibility of Hathitrust content
[edit]Hi, I'm curious as to whether people in the US can see in full view some items that in the UK are available only as "limited (search only)" on the Hathitrust website. Specifically, is volume 8 on this page available in full? I know that GBooks sometimes differentiates according to location (presumably based on IP range detection). Do you have time to check this please? There's a potentially useful article in volume 8, if only I could see the thing. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 07:18, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

- The photo looks like s DB34 to me, not a DBD34. I might be wrong, though. Between myself and my two brothers, we have (I think) 11 bikes. Two are new-ish (Ducati and a Honda of some description - I close my eyes when I go in the corner it inhabits, so as not to offend my senses). The others are all Brit bikes: BSA C11, Arial Square Four, Triumph Speed Twin etc. Oh, there was a pre-WW2 Humber 900cc side-valve that I found in a hedge but I had to sell that - did it up, got it running reasonably but needed to wait on a batch of tyres to be produced, and in the interval became unable to work. :(
- The Goldie was my dad's last bike; the rest have been acquired by us. I can't ride any of them any more due to insurance issues re: my health, so they're on permanent loan with my brothers. There s/b photos knocking about somewhere but both myself & one brother have moved house recently. Might be some at my mum's, but they'll be old. In my brother's case, the place he has bought includes a barn, intended to be converted for bike storage etc. I'm supposed to be going down there later this year if my health improves, in which case I'll take pics of some of them.
- I didn't actually read the article, merely grabbed the link. I'll go back to it. - Sitush (talk) 21:09, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
- Nice bikes. Sorry to hear about your health. I'm going to get as many miles as I can from my father's bike, as long as I last; my oldest daughter already wants it (she's 5). Now close your eyes, 'cause I'm going to put a picture of my bike (well, mine's red) up here. Bwuhahaha! Oh, if you get any more xenophobic, just ship the Duc over to me and I'll pick it up in Jacksonville, Florida. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 02:05, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

So in a day or two I'll drop you a line, and hopefully there will be a bit more meat on them bones. Thanks! I'm looking at a salad with fried salt pork on it. Very tasty. No worries
[edit]I honestly don't recall the argument (nor, I'm embarrassed to say, can I find more than one instance of us interacting). In any case, you're clearly well over the bar. Best of luck! Hobit (talk) 01:34, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I remember, and that may well be the only interaction we've ever had. Thanks for your response and your vote--you will, of course, be richly rewarded for it. What would you like? Wine? Young, nubile lovers? An iPod nano goes to every "aye" anyway. Drmies (talk) 02:00, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

- Honestly, I probably can't. It was months ago, maybe a year--you accused me of being a deletionist, and I said you should have some article edits before you started calling me names. I'm embarrassed to repeat that here. It may have been in some discussion of House episodes, in an AfD that was doomed early and got screwed up even more after I followed someone else's advice and bundled some episodes. Does that sound familiar? Anyway, it's water under the bridge, and since I don't remember apologizing to you, maybe this somewhat shameful reiteration will do. Oh, you know what I always wanted to tell you? What a cool user name you have. It's not Hobbit--it's much edgier. Are you in a metal band? Drmies (talk) 02:20, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, vaguely recall that but really can't find it. I did find about 10 cases where we argued opposite sides in AfDs (always me keep, you delete), but saw nothing problematic. In any case, I shouldn't be tossing names around so I think that's more embarrassing for me. In all cases, best of luck! Hobit (talk) 03:10, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Eaton DYK
[edit]Responded at T:TDYK on this. BarkingMoon (talk) 02:19, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- You said you made tweaks to Jeanette Eaton, but you didn't. You edited Genevieve Foster. Maybe you got the two articles mixed up? They are both Newbery Honor winners.BarkingMoon (talk) 02:24, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- OOPS, it was me. Sorry. Fixed now.BarkingMoon (talk) 02:27, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- As for the unclear, the ref probably states it better, but I was trying not to directly copy it. Can you help reword it? Eaton felt women's magazines helped men because they maintained the status quo/kept women "in their place", so to speak. BarkingMoon (talk) 02:32, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- Ha, I conflicted with you at DYK; it's straightened out now. I left you a longer comment there, but I don't know if you'll like it. Listen, I understand perfectly what she is saying (after looking at the original) and perhaps there is a way to rephrase it better. As I noted at DYK, the problem is that what you're doing is interpreting a primary source, and while you interpret that correctly, it's still an interpretation--that is, original research. I'm going to look at the source again. Drmies (talk) 02:40, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, we're not supposed to make an entire article a series of quotes either are way? Sounds like a thin lined tightrope. BarkingMoon (talk) 02:43, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- It's often a tightrope in the absence of secondary sources. BTW, I plowed through MLA and JSTOR and couldn't find anything recent on her. What would be nice, of course, is a discussion of her feminism. Now, I think what you could do is the following: cite the entire next-to-last paragraph ("The woman's magazine....such reading") (it's a nice quote, and you can use the <blockquote></blockquote> format), and introduce it with something you pull from the introduction in the reader, some of which you've already mentioned in the article. I think I have a tweak for your hook. Drmies (talk) 02:51, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- LoS made some edits. Added the blockquote. Thanks for the improvements. See DYK nom page too.BarkingMoon (talk) 11:26, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I was not aware of your RfA until a few moments ago. I'm here to apologize for not piling on my support there as I have been avoiding that project page recently (and I see no future in which I would be able to opine there...but things may change). Drmies and My Lady: Here's another Newbery writer. The facts are there but it could use a good copyedit and there's very little on her personal life (more is out there on her family). Perhaps you could check your offline sources and help copyedit? It's also listed at DYK. BarkingMoon (talk) 01:11, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
How much should I talk about James Camak? (I haven't yet at all.) LadyofShalott 03:15, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hm. A juicy paragraph? Was he exciting? Drmies (talk) 03:19, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- Depends on your definition of exciting. He was apparently important - after teaching math at UGA, he headed up the Georgia Railroad and was head of a bank. He probably deserves an article of his own, but I don't want to write it. LadyofShalott 03:24, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- Ha, you don't like writing biographies either? Well, do you need to get the house up to DYK length? I think a fat paragraph, well-sourced, is more than OK, and place a redirect to the house for the man's name. At least that's a start. Have fun...! Drmies (talk) 03:26, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- I haven't had the energy to put into it yet. A surprise 12-hour shift Monday (umm... that would be yesterday) plus too many insomniac nights this past week or so have not done wonders for my article-building. However, I got a few minutes to run up and make a copy of that magazine article I had made note of. I'm hoping that's going to give me lots of good stuff to add. Apparently we have a vertical file folder on Camak House too - so I'm going to have to figure out when I can get into it. (I bet there's one on Franklin House too...) DYK for Franklin House (Athens, Georgia)
[edit]On 23 May 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Franklin House (Athens, Georgia), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Franklin House, built on a lot once owned by the University of Georgia, has held a hotel and a hardware company, and now leases office space to the university? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

[edit]I do hope you realize my neutral vote is a joke :) --PoliticallyCorrectEditorCabal (talk) 14:28, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, at RfAs it can be difficult to spot the jokes sometimes, sorry, and on my (small) screen at home there is a lot of space between the boobies and the note on boobies. And I was not entirely truthful: I am no longer addicted to bacon; in fact, even during the heyday of my bacon period I scored below 75% on the quiz. I'm a salt pork man now. Thanks for clarifying--but I'd still rather have your support! ;) Drmies (talk) 18:00, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- You don't need my support. Besides, anyone willing to stand for RfA is too crazy to be an administrator. Mainly, I just wanted to add some levity to the RfA, based on your userpage. I was an aspiring ornithologist when I was young. Always have a warm spot in my heart for blue footed boobies. --Hammersoft (talk) 18:43, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- In that case, please add a violation to my user page by turning Category:Birds of the Galapagos to a bluelink! BTW, I have great respect for ornithologists. They are generally very friendly and quiet people. I hope you didn't become a WWF commentator or accountant. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 18:47, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Crooked timber of humanity: FYI
[edit]Ludwig Wittgenstein, 1946, Culture and Value
It is remarkable how hard we find to believe something that we do not see the truth of for ourselves. When, for instance, I hear the expression of admiration for Shakespeare by distinguished men in the course of several centuries, I can never rid myself of the suspicion that praising him has been the conventional thing to do; though I have to tell myself that this is not how it is. It takes the authority of a MILTON really to convince me. I take it for granted that he was incorruptible.---But I don't of course mean by this that I don't believe an enormous amount of praise to have been, and still to be lavished on Shakespeare without understanding and for the wrong reasons by a thousand professors of literature.
- This is true: Milton is incorruptible, which explains a lot about his life. If only 'Samson Agonistes were required reading. This is also true: we often repeat these words about Shakespeare and others without having properly read their work. Drmies (talk) 19:29, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- I forgot to wink.
- Given your recent acknowledgment of having failed in your attempt to "corrupt" one administrator, LOL, I thought that you would enjoy the quote about Milton. You may also enjoy the quote about your fellow workers in the vineyard, even supposing that you are less critical than "Morris Zapp". Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:53, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

- One of your responses at RfA was "I like to think I can bring people together. Drmies (talk) 14:09, 24 May 2011 (UTC) ". Well, if you cannot then I haven't got a clue who can. I thought about adding my support a few days ago but feel that it is really a peer review type of process & that it would be inappropriate. However, you have it in spirit and I knew from very early on that would be all which was needed. I still remember your first note to me and it settled me down enormously in what was at that time a quite challenging situation for me. Now, about JSTOR ... ;) - Sitush (talk) 23:35, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah yeah Sitush, what do you need this time...bare-knuckle boxing? hydraulic pump manuals? some recipes for turning anthracite into wholesome meals? Feel free to vote, haha--I have no moral qualms in accepting support from anyone. Well, I'm glad I ran into you as well. - Actually, I owe you a photo or two from CARDBOARDBOXSTOR, when I find it. You are on rotation for JSTOR stuff: my list of helpful people for that comprises you and, er, you. Sometimes I am just a glutton for punishment. Anyways, someone put me onto a JSTOR article earlier today, I got it via Resource Exchange & as I am wading through I keep finding cites for this. I think it might be worth my while reading that in its own right, rather than relying on secondary commentary about it. Not that I do not trust academics to represent their colleagues fairly, of course <g> Please, pretty please? - Sitush (talk) 00:27, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

- Unbelievable. Honest, I wasn't expecting this. I've been doing some work at Nair, with the usual POV-warring etc that is concomitant with Indian caste articles.
- And this was it. - Sitush (talk) 23:58, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, I owe you a photo or two from CARDBOARDBOXSTOR, when I find it. You are on rotation for JSTOR stuff: my list of helpful people for that comprises you and, er, you. (Not really, one or two others have been very helpful for that stuff also, but they do not like bacon.) - Sitush (talk) 23:54, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
You strike me as a friendly spirit who seeks to increase our coverage in topics that you know and care about. And if you need something and you need it quick, you can always email me directly. DYK for Anton Graff
[edit]On 26 May 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Anton Graff, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that Swiss painter Anton Graff made portraits of almost 1,000 contemporaries, including Frederick the Great (pictured), Goethe, Schiller, and Herder? If you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Referenz
[edit]what is that, look i just put a reference, i am new on Wikipedia and i made it under User:ErwinFilipovic, i believe this should be fine. this is a public paper published in the World press (science), i dont know whats the problem about that, In general it takes a long time to tip those information in, i do not like to do this all the time over and over again so you guys have something to do, for me it is time expansive ( so maybe in the future give me some time to response instead to delete it immediately, thank youErwinFilipovic (talk) 18:52, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
- I removed some of the code you stuck in here--whatever that was supposed to do wasn't working. What I asked an administrator to delete was a template containing what appeared to be bibliographical information. The template wasn't written correctly, and what you may have wanted it to do, that's not what templates are for. (And I think that template had been there, unused, since April, so there was plenty of time.) I suggest you get a bit more practice, and for templates, please see Help:Template. Thank you. - Wow! Great work. No wonder I didn't see you at the cocktail bar this week. (off topic) Do either of you know how to make a steam car, preferably coal powered. The Russians have canceled all fuel exports and the government is siezing all fuel assets (4 million litres for us)...My suggestion of invading Venezuela has not been implemented (yet), although I have been mobilizing an army. That thing the above people are calling a 'mop' is really a festering, rotting mass that's been sitting in a disused lavatory for the last 18 months. I know you're obsession with bacon has fractured your olfactory sense, but trust me...it stinks high holy. Good luck 'using' it. I recommend sticking it in a oil drum filled with bleach for a few days, at least. Of note; all requisitions for new mops have of late been denied due to the sheer number of prior user resignations. Speedy deletion nomination of User:Drmies/Rob Hoeke
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on User:Drmies/Rob Hoeke, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ANI comment illogical
[edit](Posting here since ANI thread closed.)
Your comment regarding patience [[2]] is not reasonable, as the insult referenced [3]:
1. occurred 16 hours after I pointed out such remarks were inappropriate [4], and
2. calling someone "shit" is an obvious insult in any culture I'm aware of.
To be clear, I have no problem with the thread being closed with a warning from another editor -- it simply would have been redundant for me to make a second posting to the user's talk page on the same issue. Gerardw (talk) 20:01, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I'm sorry you feel that way. Of course "Shit" is an insult, but your pointing out that an earlier remark was inappropriate (diff above) isn't a very clear warning, to be honest: "Statements like "take writing classes...community college..." are not appropriate here" sounds more like a gentle nudge than a warning. This warning, which came after Deng's warning, is a bit more clear. And in the end, editors need to be given a warning in no uncertain terms and then violate a policy or guidelines again before an admin is going to take action. Please read the headnote to ANI: it is for cases that require "incidents on the English Wikipedia that require the intervention of administrators", and this didn't require the intervention of an administrator, since the editor (unless I'm mistaken) changed their tune after that final warning. The rest of that back and forth between them and Jasper Deng, well, as Jasper Deng indicated at ANI, that's water under the bridge. In short: warn, and warn clearly (we have those templates for a reason), so there is no misunderstanding about what an editor has done wrong in your opinion. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 20:11, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- K. Gerardw (talk) 21:00, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- I'll say one more thing: Y'all are talking on the talk page, and there seems to be consensus for what you and Jasper proposed. The sourcing for the other version, so to speak, simply isn't there, and the 'shorter version', as it is called on the talk page, does not suffer from the fairly obvious issues of POV. Keep an eye on it, and keep it cool. Clear insults should be met with a warning, and if they persist, reported to AIV where they will be swiftly dealt with. If an insult like that to Jasper is repeated, a block is the next step. Let's hope it doesn't get that far. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 21:45, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- Based on Wikipedia:DR#For_urgent_situations, I thought ANI was the place for (beyond WQA) personal attacks? And thinking about it some more, I still think your comment isn't logical -- what you seem to be saying isn't that I'm not patient enough, it's that I was too wimpy on the warning. ;) Gerardw (talk) 22:00, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

Want some practice?
[edit]I just came across my first adminly task since your ascension: moving Florenz Ziegfeld to Flo Ziegfeld. This move seems completely obvious, common-sense, and uncontroversial per WP:STAGENAME. But if you're not sure how to do it yet, or you think it might not be as uncontroversial as I think it is, I'll just slap a {{db-move}} on the target page. I just figured I'd give you first shot at it. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 22:12, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- Mandarax, I am not sure you appreciate how complicated these situations can be. I will be glad to have my secretary place it on the calendar--provided that, of course, by that time the paperwork is in. Oh, tomorrow is Saturday, and Monday is Memorial Day, and Tuesday I have a hair appointment. In other words, I'll get to it. As soon as I check your credentials, naturally. Drmies (talk) 23:33, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
- OK, there is a page history: [5]. That's all it was. Is that a "minor" history per Wikipedia:Requested_moves/Closing_instructions#Moving_procedures? I'm not entirely sure. The other thing, Wikipedia:New_admin_school has no step-by-step for moving over a redirect (or, in this case, merging histories, since I assume that's what needs to be done even for such a tiny history). In other words, I'm going to have to call a lifeline. Is anyone around? Or, if you like, place the template on there and suggest to the admin who does it that they drop me a line. I appreciate the practice and apologize--sorry, this is my first day on the job! ;) Drmies (talk) 23:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

- OK, let me try to talk you through it... hang on, this will take me a few minutes to type up probably. LadyofShalott 00:39, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Tell it to move Florenz Ziegfeld to Flo Ziegfeld.
- When it asks if you want to delete to make way for the move, click the box that says yes, you really want to do that, and then press the button to tell it again to make the move.
- At this point, you will have the article located at Flo Ziegfeld, with that (probably minor enough to have been avoided, but what the heck, it hurts nothing to save it, and this is a learning experience) history deleted.
- Now, go into the history tab (well, I think it's that one... I've having a little trouble remembering without actually doing it)... if it is not that, try under delete this page - maybe it's really that one... Anyway, in one of those, you'll get an option to view deleted edits. Choose that, and then then tell it to restore those edits, using a summary along the lines of "merging histories".
- Now you'll have that useless page as the current version. So you'll have to go into the history, and get the most recent good edit and make it the current one by editing that version and saving it.
I hope this makes some sort of sense. I was afraid for the longest time even to try history merges until I decided (I think because of prodding from you) that I had to learn it, and I did so in my sandbox. I suggest you go ahead and try it, but if you would rather not yet, let me know, and I'll do it. LadyofShalott 00:53, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry I've created such a fuss. I wouldn't have suggested it on your first day if I'd realized how complicated it would be. I thought that since that edit was so extremely minor, and was created a month after the main article existed, that the page could simply be deleted and the other moved in. Thanks to both of you. BTW, I'm astonished that the page has existed for seven years without being moved! Having the article with the "Flo" title just seems like such a no-brainer to me. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 01:16, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, you're just a sucker for show tunes, I imagine. Take back your mink... Anyway, it's that "simply be deleted" that made me hesitate, that one little line of text that was there. See below, my question to Fetchcomms. Drmies (talk) 02:25, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- You should know that ever since you left this note, I've been considering issuing you an NPA warning! Just for the record, I've attended just one Broadway-style musical ever, 42nd Street, and it was the worst ten hours of my life. (Well, it certainly seemed like ten hours.)
Anyways, here's an update: the new title lasted less than three days, then the article was moved to an even worse title than the original one. It's now Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.. Even though I think I could now move it myself, I'm not gonna go starting a move war. I guess one of these days I may start a move discussion, but I'm too tired to do that now. Boom. See how easy that was? I didn't even have to pull out my pocket-sized atom smasher or anything. Just a few mental calculations about the impact this would have on the space-time continuum to check that nothing would blow up and voila! /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 01:28, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, thanks Fetchcomms, there goes my learning experience! But you deleted that very first entry, the one before the redirect was made. It wasn't much, but that's what I was trying to save.
- Anyway, here I am: User:Drmies/Flo. I have moved User:Drmies/Florence, and, Lady, it was that tiny little note, top left, 'view/restore deleted edits' or something like that. I selected it, clicked 'restore', and it placed it at the bottom of the history but left the current article intact. Mandarax, thanks for asking: I'm glad I got to do this exercise. Lady, thanks for taking the time to type this stuff up. Fetchcomms, thanks for what you're going to do next: write a page for new admins where you explain this patiently, in English, and where you also explain what 'minor' and 'major' is. Because, if I understand it correctly, that first edit is now gone but that doesn't seem to be a problem. Am I reading your action correctly? Drmies (talk) 02:16, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

- Far from it, Lady. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 02:25, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Check it out, Lady: I restored the one single edit, and it put it in its place automatically--so your last point, "Now you'll have that useless page as the current version", was handled by the machine. Drmies (talk) 02:29, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Huh. Interesting. I have had to do that last step. See, e.g. [6]. Maybe I did it backwards. LadyofShalott 02:35, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Indeed, interesting. Wait--I see now that I didn't restore the redirect (the second and last edit), only the one edit with text--does changing text into a redirect need to be reflected in the history as well? Let's see what happens--done, and here it is. Could it be related to when that redirect was made, so that in your case it was the most recent one, maybe? Drmies (talk) 02:41, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, maybe... I'm just not sure at this point. LadyofShalott 02:46, 28 May 2011 (UTC) In related matters, you can see that I tend to be of the major/minor/who-cares-it's-part-of-the-history mindset - and just save it all (assuming it's not just grossly insulting or has some other reason it should not be saved). LadyofShalott 02:49, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- I think I am too. CoM once set me straight on that point, in Creepmime. Since then I'm merging where others might simply blank and redirect. Wow, that was three years ago already. Drmies (talk) 03:08, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

- OK, if you're restoring something, it goes to its original timestamp, so that first edit was in 2004 and got stuck where it was supposed to be. If the edit on the redirect was in May 2011, then it would've gotten stuck as the current version and have to be reverted after restoration. Also, for major/minor, I usually don't bother with those kinds of very old edits because there's no attribution that needs to be preserved. But restoring it is no problem and I'm just lazy :P. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 03:12, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I got some exercise out of it, that's always useful. Now get to writing that manual! Drmies (talk) 03:18, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Drmies, I think you handled this admirably. Rather than just pushing ahead when you weren't absolutely certain, you asked for advice and used it as a learning experience. Consider this Question 12, and you gave a good answer.
As for restored revisions, I wish Wikipedia dealt with them differently. There's no indication that they're restored, and the logs don't specify which revisions were restored. To anyone going through the history, those restored edits do not appear to be constructive at all. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 05:58, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. It was interesting. One of the problems I ran into at new admin school is that my pull-down menus etc (you know the word for it) are different from what the instructions propose, so I'm looking around a little bit more. Wait--is this my editing interface? Is that what you would call it? Anyway, Mandarax, you have a point: if you look at that first IP's edit you'd think they're a vandal or something. But then--consider the enormous amount of information that would have to be stored. I already suffer from information overload, esp. with these new buttons! And I'm going to use this as a jumping point into...

[edit]Hey Lady, I tried to do a decent thing at Amaya (TV series), as you can see--copyvio. Obviously it's not enough to just delete the one. What do I do? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:25, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- psst! delete all of the affected revisions. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 16:37, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- I thought so--I wanted to check since this also removes free (though not helpful) text. So that's just a kind of collateral damage? And did I do it right? I checked the box that only removed text, not the rest. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 17:50, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry to jump into this convo, but that begs a question I've had for a while. When I find blatant, large copyvios:
- On NewPages, can I presume that G12 tagging is sufficient to ensure it's deleted and there's no available revision?
- On existing pages, besides blanking out (or reverting) the copyvio'd text, should I be requesting a revdel of the appropriate revisions? I'm guessing doing so may make it easier for you guys to jump in with the mop and clean it up (as opposed to me simply removing the content and not pointing it out).
- How important are the revdels in such matters, and do such get equally applied to all blatant copyvios?
- I run into all sortsa things via newpages and recentchanges, and probably should have asked these questions before. Thanks, Rob ROBERTMFROMLI | TK/CN 18:16, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Good question. G12, followed by deletion, should take care of that, yes. The second point, I used to do the same thing, simply revert, but it does leave the offense in the history. I'll leave this for any talk page stalkers. Thanks Robert, Drmies (talk) 18:19, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- I tried to reply to this last night, but connection issues didn't allow me to make the post. It does make sense to delete any copyright violation versions so that no one can just revert to one. If they are in the history, even a good faith editor might revert to one that looks like a better version - without realizing that it's a violation. I'm not sure what the policy is about deleting all versions with the violation. I'm not that experienced with these. (I tend to recommend taking any questions like these to Moonriddengirl as the copyright guru.) As for new articles, I agree that G12 should take care of the issue. LadyofShalott 12:27, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- My experience has been that the strictly correct thing to do is to delete all versions of the article from its history up to the one immediately before the copyright violation was introduced. Malleus Fatuorum 14:27, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- That all makes perfect sense. Thank to both of you. Drmies (talk) 17:02, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks all. I'll remember to make it a personal policy to request a revdel in such cases... which of course brings me to the next question (apologies if this is simply because I haven't dug far enough to find the correct board). Koninginnedag
[edit]If you are done trying out all your shiny new tools (used Special:Nuke yet?), could you have a look at WP:Featured article candidates/Koninginnedag/archive1? I have opposed because I don't think the article is comprehensive, but it's quite possible that I am wrong. Ucucha 11:04, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. I had a look and made some quick comments. I'm perusing the archives right now, but I think I agree on the general point re: newspaper sources. Surely there are books, articles, dissertations... Drmies (talk) 18:15, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

- Hi Wehwalt, I'm sorry to hear that. And actually I haven't been able to look at all the archives and databases I wanted to (kids...), but I will later and will let you know. Feel free to pass on whatever you find: I will be happy to help and translate. Did I see you've been to six of 'em already? (Did you ever see the queen?) Subduing your very aggressive bacon
[edit]I've taken the liberty of playing with your user page a bit. I didn't like the way the bacon was attacking the admin. I've made the bacon slightly smaller (to reflect your move from bacon to salt pork) and left it in the same relative position, but both of those attributes can easily be changed now. Or, of course, if you prefer it the way it was, I won't mind if you revert it. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 21:03, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

- Hey Tony, thanks. I'm really not very active with the novels project, I have to say--in fact, I'm not active in any official project at all, I think. If I'm active in anything more or less official, it's DYK. Hey, when did I acquire music interests? That's the second time I hear that. Did Mandarax forward you a copy of the Hendrix album I sent him? Thanks again! Drmies (talk) 17:19, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Re: note on aiv report
[edit]- "it doesn't rise to the level of a single, blockable offense...". So what in your opinion is *enough* offense to report to administrator then ? "man, people have thin skins" - and this is really beyond me to understand .... He attacked me, so I reported breaking Wikipedia:Etiquette to administration, what was wrong with that ? Regards, Sir Lothar (talk) 08:17, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
- So, I suppose I should've talked back to this user in the same manner as he did (calling him names etc.) ? OK, I'll remember it for next time. Sir Lothar (talk) 08:20, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
- Besides, administrator who undid my report didn't answer my question why he felt it's not enough to report to administrator so I've repeated on WP:AIV. Sir Lothar (talk) 08:23, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
- You report something to AIV. I am an administrator, and in my opinion what that person said was not bad enough to be blocked for. The rules for what should be reported to AIV are quite clear, and they are listed on top of the page. No, you shouldn't talk back to them in the same manner. That's a silly thing to suppose. And you should not report someone to AIV for such an offense--a level-2 NPA ("no personal attacks") warning is more than enough. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 16:00, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
- OK, I see. So the only thing I can do is to put him warning on his user talk, right ? Regards, Sir Lothar (talk) 05:51, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

I made a redirect based on text in your article that says Dinoraur kale. Then I looked at "what links here" and saw you had already redirected Dinosaur kale. So, do you have a typo and I need to speedily delete an improbable redirect? (If it really is dinosaur kale, the article needs to explain that name!) LadyofShalott 00:23, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
- The Larousse Gastronomique has a curious lack of kale. LadyofShalott 00:33, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

- Skandalakis was re-elected to a full term in 1994, running as a moderate Republican and openly courting gay voters. Are you sure that courting is the correct word to be used? I understand the context, but...--kelapstick(bainuu) 08:16, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hey K, I had a much juicier hook to begin with, but it was a kind of a BLP problem. The hook it ran with (Mandarax's proposal) is the one positive thing in the entire article (so really it's undue weight!)--although, considering what the subject went on to do, one can wonder how positive that was for Georgia to begin with. That courting thing, that's the one thing left from the original (unverified) BLP, and I was unable to verify it. To all of you friendly passers-by, sorry for my absence for a couple of days. We had the open house this afternoon; I have been painting and scraping and cleaning every day from 6:30 AM until nightfall (no, long after it). In a little while, I shall be taking the longest nap in recorded history. Last night I turned on the TV at 11 and realized it was Saturday, since SNL was on. Drmies (talk) 20:51, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry that hook ended up getting used. I only suggested it because I didn't think ALT2 would be approved because it did focus on negative aspects of the guy (of course, in his case, they were normal, everyday aspects). I thought my ALT4 reworking of your "juicy" original would work, but I guess whoever moved it to prep decided to play it safe. Oh, BTW, none of the hooks ever did get fficially approved. I hope the open house was successful. So often those turn out to be really just networking opportunities for the real estate agents and chances for the neighbors to see the house, but I hope yours produced some good prospects. [edit]Getting mushy, eh? =) Might want to read the last entry of my FAQ then. Get the tissues! The message I left is really my own personal template. I got tired of writing the same thing. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 03:37, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Drmies: I just saw you deleted my entry for Refrigerator Eyes. Your deletion was completely unwarranted and quite frankly annoying. It is a slang term based upon a legitimate affliction, irrespective of your ungrounded speculation. I invite you to look up the2006 John Hopkins Study which can be found on the net. First of all, what makes you an expert to make an assessment without doing your research, especially when the deletion was made within 1 minute of posting. Your failure to take care in doing sufficient research only calls into question the integrity of Wikipedia. Complete and gross abuse of your authority. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DavidMichail (talk • contribs) 03:50, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Coeur Alaska, Inc. v. Southeast Alaska Conservation Council
[edit]Since we seem to be in the reviewing spirit, I was thinking of sending Coeur Alaska, Inc. v. Southeast Alaska Conservation Council out for peer review:
- Is it worth the hassle?
- Is the article any good, I am a terrible judge of quality.
--kelapstick(bainuu) 06:16, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- That is a pretty nice article, K-stick. Can't you write a happy one, where the good guys win and mining companies don't get to pollute the entire earth? I made minor edits; see if you agree. I think that even though it's relatively short you could try for GA. Mind you, I have not checked the sources for quotes, paraphrase, accurate representation, but I'm sure you have. I also haven't plowed the news archives to see if anything else happened, if any new reports for instance commented on the destruction wrought by all those metals, and if the decision influenced any other mines and companies. I do have one problem: Ginsberg's objection (the first sentence) is not entirely clear to me. Could you clarify? Drmies (talk) 21:09, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- I can't write articles where the mining guys loose, that is why I don't like Avatar. I just noticed there is a dead link in the references...Can't find a mirror of it. Awe, Snap.--kelapstick(bainuu) 22:53, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
I didn't make any changes. I readded the external link and categories that were earlier removed. That is all. 99.135.8.3 (talk) 22:02, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
We must have been editing it at the same time. I was readding the imdb link and categories as you were reverting. 99.135.8.3 (talk) 22:05, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
- Right on. Thanks for your note. Drmies (talk) 22:06, 5 June 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for disposing of User:Agawamchief. Please feel free to block him from editing Wikipedia, as he as been a nuisance on numerous pages, and I'm tired of removing his edits (I can't quite figure out how to block users). But I'm also wondering why you removed so much off of the Netop Summer Camp page? I realize that there wasn't any references, and I was going to work on that in a matter of days. But I mean, it's all gone! I don't want to start any edit wars, so is there any way we can try and figure out a solution to get most of that information back? I haven't seen the page in a matter of days, so User:Agawamchief may have badly vandalized the page (as he usually does) and you may have just deleted more than you thought (I'm not sure) but what I'm saying is most of that information was quality facts, that with a couple of references, is really complete. Please don't take this as me being angry at you, I'm just a little puzzled as to why the page got so bare, and if there is any way we can get the page close to how it was before. And again, if you know how to, I'm begging you to block User:Agawamchief because you're probably a more experienced Wiki user than I am.Peetlesnumber1 (talk) 01:01, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- OK, first of all, that article suffered from a couple of things--that none of the information was verified is one thing, but even if the information I removed was verified it still wouldn't be notable. A schedule of the day's activities is not encyclopedic information, nor is an overview of the activities that take place. Second, there are no reliable sources that establish that the camp is notable in the first place--that it passes WP:N. Right now, it's a prime candidate for deletion, and to stave that off would require the addition of references in secondary sources. See WP:RS for what counts as a reliable source. Finally, I didn't dispose of that editor, and they are warned: if they continue to be disruptive or continue to insult other editors, that's another matter. A block of that editor is a pretty extreme measure, and will only come about as a result of their actions--and those actions would have to constitute serious and/or serial vandalism. I hope this answers your questions. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 01:40, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I see that it was just now nominated for deletion. I hope you will be able to find reliable sources that establish its notability as a subject for a Wikipedia article. Drmies (talk) 01:41, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Did the wiki go mad?
[edit]Doc, what is this? I go off for a few weeks and come back to find you with all sorts of extra tools? How did this happen? On a serious note, congratulations, I'm sorry I wasn't here to add another drop to your ocean of support. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 04:37, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- Mustard after the meal, Spiffy, as the Dutch say. But thanks anyway. Where have you been? Out gallivanting again? Or did the struggle over Nair get to you? "Your ancestors were our concubines!" Good to hear from you, and I hope you stick around for a bit. Drmies (talk) 14:56, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yup, was in the southern hemisphere close to the date line and decided not take the laptop. Haha, I haven't been near that set of articles in a while, there's an off-wiki consortium (on Orkut if I remember correctly) there and they all seek help and droves of them come to the talk page. I took some admin action on a peripheral article and the attack wagon came after me. I hope to be around for a while now, but it'll be in a peaks and valleys kind of schedule. BTW, I just noticed that you blocked me when I was gone! I'll see you at your hearing at ANI soon. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:11, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Santorum article
[edit]Hey, just wanted to say that your commentary on the issues there was (regardless of whether we agreed or not) very kind and considerate to everyone involved. If all editors were as reasonable, the project would be a much more amicable place. Thanks, Steven Walling 05:33, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well thanks--that's nice to hear. I have to say, though, that for such a contentious issue the discussion so far is very civil. It's easy enough to be cavalier about it, and I have to refrain myself from being thusly, since it is an important matter. Honestly, I used to think that Savage's coining was the funniest thing in the world, but I am not so sure about that anymore. Not that I have a lot of sympathy for the supposedly Google-bombed victim, but our political discourse seems to have stooped to the level of giving a prize for the biggest and funnest piece of mud flung in a mudfight. And I hope I was clear enough, that I respect SlimVirgin's and Jimbo's position and arguments (just to single out two big players). But it's sad to see that some other editors throw stuff around about Scientology and political motives. Anyway, this is far from over, I'm afraid. I'll go back to the discussion after my class, to see if you are my friend or my mortal enemy, haha. Again, thanks for your note, and let's hope that the discussion doesn't get out of hand. The Devil Wears Prada
[edit]Okay, dude, maybe you just don't like me or something but ya know, changing genres is vandalism. If you haven't noticed even the Twinkle warning set-up has recently had a series of new warnings for users that decide to change genres on music articles which proves how disruptive it is. Users get blocked all the time for this act and that user in particular has been blocked twice for that sole reason. As for The Devil Wears Prada being a metalcore band, take a look at these if you would like --> [7][8][9][10] there is also several more sources on the web and in newspapers and magazines that state the same thing as them being a Christian metalcore act while there has never been one reliable source ever saying anything about deathcore. What that IP is doing is equivalent to writing a bunch of crap on the page, even at times I found purely made-up genres and stuff he was posting on articles ensuring that is is no "content dispute", it's just tearing the site apart leaving those like me to revert but oh look, I also get attacked in the process, which is a major offense. -- GunMetal Angel 22:18, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- You got attacked and the user got blocked for it. Do you wish I should punish them again for the same offense? And how do you know that user got blocked the last time for changing genres, rather than for insulting you? And have you considered even placing a warning template on their talk page, or dropping them a line saying hey, this isn't the way to go? I don't need to be looking at your references here. You need to add those to the article, and THEN you have a case--they'd be adding unreferenced material or removing referenced material. For what it's worth, they might as well accuse you of removing "deathcore", which they may claim is proper. Would you like to be blocked for changing genres? "Dude"? Drmies (talk) 22:25, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- That can't happen hence the fact that it was a revert, not a change and that I have all the sources in the world that claim this band metalcore aside from the fact of the users that back that up that know that this band is in fact metalcore as well so that's an odd way to look at things if you ask me. & sure I guess I'll give them a warning template, it's just I didn't necessarily see a big reason on warning him for the same thing he already got blocked for before. -- GunMetal Angel 22:34, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
- I asked Cirt about this, just below your message, but I'm pretty confident in guessing that the user got blocked for insulting you--I've tried to tell you that three times now. You can have all the sources in the world, but not a single one of those sources is in the article, or in the band's article. I'm trying to give you a way in which you can claim that genre changing is disruptive, which it often is, but you don't seem to listen. Removing verified information and adding unverified information can be seen as disruptive; adding another genre in an article in which no genres are verified in the first place is not per se disruptive. Drmies (talk) 22:37, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
...I guess so, man. - GunMetal Angel 22:42, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Notable Speakers of the Albanian Language
[edit]I am sorry for "edit-warring" if I have done so. However, as Albanian is a less common language, I believe it would be good to put a list of prominent speakers on the page. Whether or not the people listed are good examples, I believe a "Notable Speakers" section should be made. I hope you concur. Dumbdog45 (talk) 02:31, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, but you should really take this up on the article talk page, not here. Speaking personally, I don't think that 7.6 million people is very small, and your list should probably consist of most of the people in Category:Albanian people--that's not feasible. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 02:35, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Gunmetal Angel and edit summaries
[edit]I noticed you recently left a comment for User:Gunmetal Angel about inappropriate edit summaries. I thought you would be interested to that know I just left him a similar comment only two weeks ago. He almost immediately deleted my message while commenting: "even admins make similar edit summaries when they're frustrated with dealing with the same shit for so long". Fezmar9 (talk) 16:15, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- It's easy to get frustrated, esp. in an area where there's so much fan crap and edit warring going on--metal, football, wrestling, etc., but that's no excuse. I hope they stop and I will keep an eye on it. (We don't template the regulars, as I'm sure you know.) Thanks for your note. Drmies (talk) 16:18, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- Oh believe me, I understand frustration regarding fan crap; Gunmetal and I edit a lot of the same articles. It is genuinely annoying to see an album genre get altered multiple times in the same day. But his methods are inappropriate, and he obviously didn't take note of previous warnings. Is there a purely in good faith and polite way to suggest a temporary wikibreak? If these edits are stressing him out too much, it might be a good idea to take a step back for a bit and return with a level head. Fezmar9 (talk) 16:36, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
helpful script
[edit]Might be helpful.
importScript('User:NuclearWarfare/Mark-blocked script.js');
This is a very helpful script if your working with vandalism. It marks all blocked accounts with a line thru their username on watchlist, signatures, and links to their userpages. Let's you know right away if blocked, if the AIV bot is down to clear reports or just know which ones are already addressed when the list is backlogged. Kindly Calmer Waters 16:34, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
New to the job
[edit]Hey, I see that on my talk page you wrote "you know I'm new to this job", but no, I didn't know. In fact you seem such an obvious admin that I was really surprised to see that you haven't been one for ages. It seems I am not the only one to think you are an obvious admin, to judge by the truly exceptional amount of support you got: I'm not sure whether 205:1 is some kind of record, but it can't be far off. (Yes, I know, officially it was 205:2, but there's no way I'm going to count Mindunny's "oppose".) Great to have you on board. JamesBWatson (talk) 18:35, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks! I appreciate that. I'm personally not counting the other one either, haha, since it seemed to have derived from a moment of anger. But yes, I was very pleased with the amount of support, and I hope I don't screw it up--which is why I'm asking questions like the one I asked you. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 19:01, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
I got "copyright violation warnings" from you in a matter of seconds of posting my text meaning you did not even read the page. I have no idea what are you talking about - I am the author of the original text describing my company which is found on other sites as well. Also with "purely promotional warning" all other solar energy companies are present on Wikipedia - how come? Are you just bullying me? If you are aware of arcane process that companies use to put this info in Wikipedia please explain - that would make you helpful rather then intervening. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vlkost (talk • contribs) 19:42, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- I'm a quick reader. Also, my search engine, Google, revealed pretty quickly that it was a cut and paste job. Surely you understand that copyright violation is a serious matter. I replied further on your talk page. Drmies (talk) 19:45, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Codex Vindobonensis 751
[edit]On 8 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Codex Vindobonensis 751, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the ninth-century Codex Vindobonensis 751 contains a selection of the correspondence of Saint Boniface, as well as a mysterious palindrome and the oldest English poetic proverb? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. Random thanks
[edit]Thanks. :-) --Tryptofish (talk) 16:46, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Hi Drmies,
Of course, I support this block, and who wouldn't? Thanks for taking care of it. I just wonder if it's enough... for instance, the typical process is to release a block after disavowal of the legal threats, but his personal attacks were so vile that I don't think that should happen here. Do you think it makes sense to alter the block to reflect that second reason? I'd rather not do it myself, because I don't want it to look like a WMF ban... (it's not, if you or the community decide I'm crazy or over-reacting on this, do as you will with my blessing!). Thanks for everything that you do. Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:11, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hello Philippe: I have to tell you, I'm new on the job here, and have yet to deal with an unblock request according to the process you describe above. From what I've seen at ANI, such disavowing isn't that frequent--I've never seen such editors return--but I'm sure it has happened or can happen. I made an extra note in my block summary, "Besides disruptive editing, spam, foul language, and bad manners," and I assume that an admin who would consider unblocking would take that as a prompt to look more carefully into the content of the edits, which were, indeed, pretty vile. But for me, the primary reason was the legal threat, so I'm a bit hesitant to change that in hindsight, even though your argument makes sense. How about this: I will place a notice on WP:AN, to call on the collective wisdom of those who've been in this situation, and we'll see what they say. Thank you for your kind words, and for your interest in the matter. Drmies (talk) 18:01, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- There's no particular need to do that, unless you want to. I really don't want to impose that on anyone. But I think your note on the block makes sense. That may be sufficient. :) Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:55, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well, so far it seems that no one would ever consider unblocking this editor, as I expected, and it seems that an additional note/block change will not be necessary. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 20:48, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- BTW, my wording above wasn't perfectly clear: I included that note I cited above at the time I made the block, because it seemed a somewhat extraordinary case with more than one block rationale. Drmies (talk) 20:49, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Project Amicus deletion
[edit]Hello
New to posting to Wiki but do not understand how my Project Amicus posting did not meet the criteria of notability. This project has already been announced in March to the press and has enough information available as well as outside sources to corroborate it as a legitimate topic to be linked off of the Grindr, LLC wikipedia page. This is an announced yet unreleased piece of technology much like iCloud which was only announced 2 days ago, is not released but has a full Wiki page.
Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christopher.dilley (talk • contribs) 19:46, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hello Christopher--one obvious problem is that the links that came with the article (like this one, which you added to Grindr) don't mention Amicus at all. Thus the topic does not come close to passing our notability criteria. See WP:N. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 20:47, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- iCloud isn't much of a comparison--it has coverage which actually mention the topic. I saw it being announced on CNN. It's notable in a way that Amicus is clearly not (yet). Drmies (talk) 20:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
The original Grindr article should have had the reference done correctly, which I've now corrected and does directly name Project Amicus as well as go into detail as to what the developing software will encompass. The secondary resource is the press release directly from Grindr, LLC which together should suffice for notability considering the magnitude of the developers. Should it not get the same consideration as iCloud another yet to be released, in development only announced piece of software? --Christopher.dilley (talk) 20:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- The Vanity Fair article mentions it, in one sentence. That's probably not enough by our standards, but who knows. A press release is not a secondary source, of course. I suggested you look at WP:N. If you do, you'll see sentences like "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". That's the bar. Drmies (talk) 21:01, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Understood. I've found the following articles to use as back-up. If this is sufficient is it possible to restore the framework of the deleted article so I don't have to go through all of the coding again?

along with said original press release
Thank you --Christopher.dilley (talk) 21:05, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- I have placed the article in your personal user space, at User:Christopher.dilley/Project Amicus, so feel free to work on it as much as you like. I warn you though, the above links probably don't count as reliable sources in the sense of WP:RS, besides the Vanity Fair thing. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 21:14, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
I've edited and cited, can this be moved back in for review? Thank you --Christopher.dilley (talk) 22:18, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- Go ahead and see if it flies. It certainly looks a lot better. Try it yourself: on the top of the editing screen there's the "move" function. Click it, type in the proper name, and there you are. Good luck. Drmies (talk) 00:26, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Karl May page - again
[edit]Hello Drmies
Since last year's episode with the spammer defacing your Wikipedia page on Karl May in my name, over a lengthy and persistent time, I've been checking regularly (once burnt twice shy). With gratitude have I noticed that Zdenek Dubrava's (I like his new Czech name) renewed attempts at damaging me have been detected. One peculiar thing caught my eye with the 7 March article that was "unverified and tendentious paragraph, with gratuitous spamming for the Karl May society" - the link in the deleted text led straight to a page where an article by Walther Ilmer was posted. Walther Ilmer was my 'spammer friend's' [friend in this case is meant ironically] idol. Tho, coincidentally, that article was posted by a German IP address. Now, I'll have to sign this post with marliesb and four tildes, as this is truly me, Marlies Bugmann, the translator in question, who has posted this, not some imposter in my name. I feel like this is dungeons and dragons ...
I shall keep checking the English Karl May Wikipedia page - thank you for being so vigilant.
Greetings marliesb Marliesb (talk) 03:27, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaargh. Drmies (talk) 03:29, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- Is there anything going on recently? I've looked, but there is only minor activity. I wish a Karl May lover who knew how to write encyclopedically would come along and really clean up that article... Drmies (talk) 03:33, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
- -) - yes, that's what I said - but I'm not that panicky now - enemy Inshuns identified, not so dangerous now :-) (Spass beiseite). Not recently, it was March (the spamming article - I wish that person hadn't done that because the Karl May Gesellschaft are doing a great job, they don't need spamming suspicion) and January 2011 when the fake Zdenek Dubrava struck twice.
Well ... I thought the same thing ... you need a Karl May lover who can do that. I am that, alas I write prose, not encyclopaedically, and some of the de-Germanization that has taken place lately has improved the article. I won't volunteer, that would inflame the enemy Inshuns' dislike of me and cause them to raise the war hatchet even higher (and holler louder). It would expose me to all sorts of malodorous influxes. I'll concentrate on translating and researching May's work - that's far more fun. I work privately with a number of people (internationally) on English Karl May and Karl May related texts, that's as far as it goes - privately only.
So I guess I'll sign with the four tildes again and my infamous marliesb - cheerio from Tassie

DYK for Lacinato kale
[edit]On 10 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Lacinato kale, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Thomas Jefferson grew Lacinato kale, an heirloom kale also known as Dinosaur kale, in his Monticello garden? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Hendrick Bogaert
[edit]Thanks for removing that ridiculously large and and threatening Coren Bot tag from my painter stub on Hendrick Bogaert! I was just as puzzled as to why the bot tagged the article as you were. The only thing I could think of was that this particular painter is one of a string of three that the biographer Arnold Houbraken disapproved of and of whom he told "dirty" stories, so the words poop, pigs, and brandywine are in there. Since a few days passed since I pressed the save button, I was also worried that this Coren beast was now an "unwatched bot". I take it from your actions that I don't need to remove these myself (which would be politically incorrect as the writer of the article I guess) if it happens in future. This is the second time it happened to me, the other one was for Concert in the Egg which has the unencyclopedia words "robbed" and "yokel" in it. In that case, the bot did at least latch on to the original artist name, but there was no text to uphold a claim of plagiarism there either. Jane (talk) 07:42, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Jane--I don't know why the bot did what it did. You, as the creator, have the right to remove the tag (in my opinion anyway); if you explain in an edit summary why you're doing that there should be no problem. Also: thanks for writing up all those Dutch painters! Drmies (talk) 17:54, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
Did your book arrive?
[edit]Did your book arrive? In other news, I have been recruited onto my division's basketball team for the intercompany tournament (which is really used to draft for the company team for the site wide tournament). Once I found out that they only drafted me so I would "sponser" the team's entry fee (6,000₮), I negotiated the position of coach, but that honour comes with buying the team pizza and beer...--kelapstick(bainuu) 04:31, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

- Whaddayaknow. I go and nominate it for a DYK, to find you had already done that. Drmies (talk) 03:49, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your contribution to the article. And thanks for the nomination; sorry I beat you to it. Less than an hour before your attempt, I was actually getting ready to add an ALT to my nomination that was very similar to one you submitted. If you check the article's history, you'll see that my edit immediately before yours had the edit summary Additional ref for the "15" fact; this was additional sourcing specifically for my ALT I was considering. But then I began investigating the fact about there being just fifteen known Longhi paintings, of which twelve are of Madonna and Child. One of the sources that mentions the fact goes on to describe, if I'm counting correctly, seventeen of her paintings (at least one is an altarpiece; maybe they don't count that?). The image which was in Commons before I started writing the article, and at least two of the ones I uploaded are not among those listed. Adding to the difficulty, every source seems to give a different title for every painting. So I don't know if those are ones that are definitely attributed to her, or ones that are thought to probably be hers, or ones by her followers or studio, or who knows what? I ended up weakening the numerical statement in the article and removing the images I have doubts about. D'oh!
Oh, would you delete User:Mandarax/BL for me? Thanks, MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 05:59, 14 June 2011 (UTC)- Sure thing, Mandarax. Drmies (talk) 14:39, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Efik Language Talk Page personal attacks!
[edit]Hello Again Drmies! You can now re-read the discussions on Efik Talk page, I just realized how to make the spacing show. I also deleted the Caps because it's now clearer to read, you can also read clearly Kwami's responses and see that Kwami is refusing to change the error he/she made to the page eventhough I have Repatedly pointed out the mistakes. I have also provided numerous sources but Kwami calls the sources ignorant and Claims that my writing is " incoherent and nonsensical", so who is the one attacking the other personaly? I have told Kwami that he/she made a big error in changing ibibio language page to Efk language with the ibibio phrases, also that the 2 languages are differs just like French & Spanish, also as there is nothing like a language called French-Spanish there is also isn't a language called Ibibio-Efik. Am a native who speak this languages, but Kwami isn't from Nigeria and doesn't know anything about these languages and Has Also refused to Change the Mistake He made in Februrary 17. If you still continue to support Kwami, then you are helping to Portray Wikipedia as Encyclopedia Of LIES! Ibibiogrl (talk) 22:17, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well, this is certainly an improvement. I am not supporting Kwami necessarily, and I am not an expert on any of those languages--I'm just a regular linguist. The content of those edits does not interest me greatly; my concern was with the way in which you addressed your grievance. Filing 3RR reports when the accused party wasn't guilty of edit-warring, that's one of those things. Don't put me in some opposing camp based on my judgment of content, please. Drmies (talk) 00:17, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
- You are not Supporting Kwami, But you reported that I called Kwami Slow, Dumb etc. Yet Kwami used the words Ignorance 1st. "As for Ukwa, your ignorance is not evidence of anything". Drmies what is the meaning of IGNORANCE? S/He also said;
- "But we cannot have the same article under two names, nor an article on Ibibio-Efik that does not include Ibibio, nor an article on Efik that does not include Efik. A little common sense would be helpful."
What is meaning of Common sense? Or because Kwami put it very nicely, and mine wasn't? Also I wasn't blanking the Efik page, since I just signed on it takes me a long while to write up an article. According to the statements above, Kwami said I could develop articles on Efik and Ibibio, that is what I was doing when you or your other BIASED administrators returned the articles back to the re-direct.
- According to Wikipedia A false statement/article is removed immediatley it is realized. Yet once I pointed out the mistakes, Kwami kept insisting that me a native who speaks these languages was wrong and asked for sources. I provided the sources and Kwami Called A brilliant Historian who is a Million times more knowledgable than Kwami on the language;
- "utterly ignorant AND not some random idiot who posted a web page".
Yet you DRMIES and your other Biased colleges are claiming that am the one attacking and causing a disruption.
- I can be Block because I don't care to be part of a web/Encyclopedia of Lies! Like I said I only just signed on to fixed this error. Am done with You all, am going to be taking this issues to the Founder/head by email, once the Ibibio union are involved it might become a legal matter if Wikipedia still continues to portray this misleading information.
I will take this matter to the heads by Email first because they might not be aware of what you all supposed administrators are doing to their image — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ibibiogrl (talk • contribs) 21:16, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello Drmies,
I noticed you marked an article as a stub using the {{stub}}
template. Did you know that there are thousands of stub types that you can use to clarify what type of stub the article is? Properly categorizing stubs is important to the Wikipedia community because it helps various WikiProjects to identify articles that need expansion.
If you have questions about stub sorting, don't hesitate to ask! There is a wealth of stub information on the stub sorting WikiProject, and hundreds of stub sorters. Thanks!

Invitation to the Bacon Challenge 2012
[edit]Hello! You have been invited to take part in the Bacon Challenge 2012. In case you don't know or need a refresher, the Bacon Challenge is an annual celebration of bacon on Wikipedia in which editors come together to help create, expand, and improve Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. The event lasts all the way through National Pig Day 2012, giving participants plenty of time to work at their pleasure. In addition to the Bacon Challenge is the Bacon WikiCup 2012, a side event to the Challenge in which all bacon-related contributions done by those participating in the Challenge are submitted and scored by the scorekeeper (me) based on the scoring chart. At the end of the Challenge, the user with the most points in the Bacon WikiCup will win a shiny trophy for their userpage. In addition, the users who score the highest in specific categories (not yet finalized, but the categories include most image uploads, most article creations, most DYK submissions, and more) will win barnstars. Finally, all participants will receive a medal. While the awards are nice, in the end, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy what we're all here for, which is improving Wikipedia.
If you decide to participate, great! You may add your name to the participants list at the main page of the Bacon Challenge 2012, and pick up the userbox for your userpage if you desire. Signing up for the Challenge will also automatically enter you into the Bacon WikiCup. If you don't wish to participate, that's fine too - maybe next year! In the meantime, if you know anyone who might also be interested in participating, feel free to invite them! The Challenge is open to anyone and accepts participants at any time, so feel free to let anyone who might be interested know.
Note that I, the scorekeeper of the Bacon WikiCup, will be on vacation starting on the 18th of June all the way up until the 5th of July. I will have limited access to the internet, so I may or may not be able to score users' contributions during this time. Sorry for any delay in scoring (but since the Challenge lasts for more than half a year, there's no rush, right? (= ).
I'm looking forward to another fun, successful year. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:53, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit]I was able to condense my article about The 3 J's somewhat in hopes of saving my article from deletion. Hopefully, this editing maneuver will be taken into account. Mr. Brain (talk) 04:15, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Glas (book) GTG for DYK, possible alt hook suggest
[edit]I was amazed how much I enjoyed reading your article, though I gritted my teeth when I saw it involved Derrida. What a ham that guy was, though maybe he had to be like that to bring home the bacon in his field. I did suggest an alt hook, but feel free to reject it. Sharktopus talk 19:29, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- I guess that's a compliment! Well, I'm not the best reader of Derrida, that's a fact, and I've lost patience with him more than once. But I am looking forward to finally getting my own copy of Glas. A bit of trivia: one of those translators is a former professor of mine. By all accounts he was the best-read man on campus, and I believe it. Now I'm off to look at that hook--thanks! Drmies (talk) 21:00, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
- Oh man, this is getting less like fun and more like work. The reason for my original sentence structure was (awkward) avoidance of putting "as" twice so close together. Making the suggestion for an "ALT 29bXLV(24)" here rather than at T:DYK -- how about moving Hegel and Genet into the quote and dropping the reviewer's name out of charity to her:
... that one reviewer described Jacques Derrida's 1974 book Glas by saying, "As the father's phallus works in the mother's hymen, between two legs, so Glas works at origins, between two columns, between Hegel and Genet"?
- If you like it, use it and if you don't, don't. Sharktopus talk 16:09, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
OK, you're the English teacher...

- Ha, so was I, and I told Mrs. Drmies all about it over dinner. She agrees with the gerund, BTW, but she also admits that it's on rhetorical rather than grammatical grounds. Anyway, this is much more pleasant than my other current disagreement, over a DYK hook. Drmies (talk) 01:43, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Mmm, yes, I see. That's... odd. The reaction from the other person seems disproportionate to the request. LadyofShalott 01:52, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
- Heh. Drove another experienced editor out of this place? Just the kind of bullying we expect from newly minted admins wielding their power arbitrarily and capriciously. Bongomatic 04:28, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

The article is back at T:DYK, thanks to MaterialScientist, I also tried to fix the alt hook as you suggested, but I would absolutely defer to Drmies about what hook it goes out with. - Actually, thinking a little more about it, I think the lack of explanation of the columns is exactly the problem I have with it. I just can't understand the quote without some context for it. --LadyofShalott-alt (talk) 02:26, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

- Another one! Thanks BMK--your watchful attitude is appreciated. Drmies (talk) 18:10, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I think you'll find the article did not make that clear when I placed the tag. Thanks. Reichsfürst (talk) 19:37, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, but the article looked exactly the same--it has an infobox for a soap character, and in that box it says "Brianna Brown as Dr. Lia Niles", besides things like "Portrayed by" and "Created by". These are all pretty clear indications that this is not a BLP. Drmies (talk) 19:40, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- When I placed the tag it was just an infobox, so admittedly an honest mistake was made, please don't get sarky about it. I apologise if you view it as my wasting your time, but I do look through a large number of the newly created pages and a couple of mistakes in a few hundred are easily put right by more venerable editors, such as your kind self. Reichsfürst (talk) 21:13, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- Reichsfürst, you misunderstand me. I had no intention of criticizing. You are doing valuable work. I left you a note, however, since you are relatively new and since (in my opinion) tagging for deletion is one of the most serious editing acts one can perform--it should be done carefully. It's not a matter of a couple of mistakes or a couple more mistakes--everyone makes mistakes, old farts like me included. And you were not wasting my time; I hope I'm not wasting yours. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 21:19, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- I apologise for viewing your comment as such - I shall take on board your comment and be more careful in future. Reichsfürst (talk) 21:21, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- No apology necessary! BTW, there was something else going on: that 'empty' article was a miss from the get-go, as I discovered when I clicked on the name of the actress who played the part--it's Lisa, not Lia. If you like, go to what is now a redirect, and see if you think it qualifies for speedy deletion under Wikipedia:Csd#Redirects, R3. I think it's a borderline case. There are lots of ins and outs to the three editor-initiated methods of deletion, and practice makes perfect. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 21:23, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- It could probably stay. I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask but is there a way I can view the number of pages I have patrolled anywhere? Thanks. Reichsfürst (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:18, 22 June 2011 (UTC).
- Hmm. I don't know if there is a technical term attached to "patrol". Your contributions ("My contributions", on top of the page) is are here and your edit count (on "My contributions", link all the way at the bottom) is this. I'm sure there's lots of other stats available, but as far as "patrolling" goes (with flags for new articles and such), you can try browsing around at Wikipedia:New pages patrol. Drmies (talk) 23:47, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- I'm sorry for having to ask you this I'm just not quite sure where to go having looked at the relevant page; I'd love an experienced wikipedian to act as a sort of informal mentor to help me with starting to create pages and with wikipedia policy etc but I don't know where I can sign up for this? Thanks. Reichsfürst (talk) 16:08, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Query about a source
[edit]Hi, I seem to recall that Indian articles are something that you would rather avoid ... but I have the same attitude to WP:RSN, which frequently in my experience fails to manage a clear consensus. So, I wonder if I could run something by you that does not actually mean you have to look at the article talk page etc, although obviously you are welcome to look at it.
Article is A. Nesamony, a now dead politician. Principle sources have been a couple of works which are apparently only available in Hindi. No ISBN numbers, no sign that the authors are notable or that any of their works have been cited anywhere. At least one of these sources appears to have had a print run of as few as 1,000 copies and asked for donations (no cover price). They're published by a publishing house whose name begins "Nesamony", and is apparently at the very least supported by a current member of a political party which appears to be the successor to Nesamony's own party. The contributor who has been adding these sources has been indulging in personal attacks against innocent ole me, and generally not getting the point when queried. S/he has a history of doing the same on a completely unrelated article, which on that occasion ended up at ANI. In particular, I have been unable to ascertain whether there is any critique of Nesamony's life at all in the sources or whether they are merely hagiography.
My gut feeling is that they should be treated as unreliable, on the basis of there being an accumulation of bad smells., but I would appreciate another viewpoint as it is not a high-traffic page. One other contributor agreed with my early concerns but has not been active on the article for a few weeks. - Sitush (talk) 19:58, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- Indian articles??? (Did you catch me at Holy Hair Controversy?) I'll have a looksee later. Thanks Sitush! (Like I need more bad smells.) Drmies (talk) 20:01, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- No, not there. The long and the short of it is, well, I spotted you demonstrating your new skills on Pygmies, erm, Pygmy. - Sitush (talk) 20:09, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- You may be off the hook. C.Fred has just supported my NPA notice at Kumaripriya, and so may possibly weigh in on the article talk page also. - Sitush (talk) 20:27, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- A quick look at their contributions verifies that we're not dealing with a helpful editor. I looked at the article, and find that difficult to judge--it's hardly my area of expertise (I'm an honorary Tamil, with the emphasis on honorary) and I can't judge. But it does look like a lot of "Indian articles" I've looked at: poor sourcing, self-published references, a history of aggrandizing and POV editing. Your editor's comments on the talk page, I've seen those before as well: a combination of too much pride (ofermod, to cite the Battle of Maldon) and lack of knowledge of WP policies, leading to accusations of partisan editing and conspiracies. Pff. You have behaved more patiently than could be expected, and I admire your diplomacy. You'll make someone a nice admin one of these days. Anyway, that last remark of theirs is worth an NPA warning, certainly. Sorry I can't help really with content matters. Have you dropped Spiffy a line? User:SpacemanSpiff? If they're not gallivanting around the Southern hemisphere they might be of use as well. Thanks Sitush, and keep the faith, Drmies (talk) 03:49, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comments and the lead. Spiff pretty much agrees with my comments about SPS etc. Got a couple of useful leads from that, which is great. As for making someone a nice admin, well, I have my doubts. I am spending far too much time working in areas that are hugely contentious and one consequence of that is my name keeps getting dropped at ANI etc. I keep promising to move back to what I really want to do - those boring articles about Mancunian industry etc - and am increasingly of the opinion that I need to force that decision on myself. Don't get me wrong: the Indian articles are fascinating stuff but the aggravation ... - Sitush (talk) 00:37, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- I feel your pain re:aggravation. I blame Spiff, in part, with that Indian flag of his--though one of my earliest concerted efforts was Arundhati Roy, contentious enough: a ton of BLP violations and a mass of disruption from the famous (?) socker from the Research Triangle. Well, I've not seen you get blasted anywhere, and most editors, one hopes, can separate the wheat from the chaff. Maybe, if you jump to that rank, we can form a cabal--you, me, and Spiff, imposing our will with our well-known Dutch (Tamil)/Mancunian/freewheeling agenda. Wouldn't that be fun? Drmies (talk) 00:52, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- The curried bacon for curmudgeons cabal? I get blasted regularly, but so far only by those on the "wrong" side of consensus. This is a situation that is unlikely to last as there are some concert parties forming & my reputation as a ignorant racist spawn of the devil etc is growing. Some people do not accept that the nearest I have come to close involvement with Indians are (a) foodstuffs, (b) friends in the real world and (c) one of my dad's old motorbikes. What is interesting is that I am under pretty regular monitoring at the moment because of the forthcoming heart op ... and none of this cruft seems to be affecting my blood pressure. It must be all in the mind. Plus, of course, the light relief and rays of sanity, for which I thank you and others. One article at a time, you say. - Sitush (talk) 01:25, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Question
[edit]Hi Drmies, Would you object to an email? .. Admittedly, it is regarding an on-wiki topic, but I feel it somewhat sensitive; and as such, I'd hate for a casual (talk page stalker) to interpret anything incorrectly. One other note too: Do you prefer the terms he/him or she/her? I've seen several threads that left me a bit unsure of that one. Of course you're completely free to tell me it's none of my business, as it doesn't relate to building an encyclopedia in any way shape or form. Cheers and best. — Ched : ? 23:00, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Page protection
[edit]He user is deceased. Could we stop auto-notices landing on his talk? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:15, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- Eh, I've dealt with this once, but not in any official capacity--I looked for the user/editor/bot that distributed the newsletter and left a message of the talk page. I don't think there's anything admin-wise involved here, if that's what you were asking. Sorry if I'm no help, Drmies (talk) 23:17, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- I mean, I can protect it, sure, but if the page is left as a kind of memorial then it should be able to be edited, no? Drmies (talk) 23:18, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- No problem. I see you've got your hands full with many matters. I would be happy to keep and eye out and notify those who deliver notices. Let me look after it. Cheers, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:55, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
- Very kind of you Anna, Thank you. — Ched : ? 01:10, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, thanks. Ched--there really isn't much for an admin to do in this matter, is there? BTW, Anna, got your mail: sounds good. Drmies (talk) 01:20, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Probably should have mentioned before: The reason this post caught my eye was that I was very active in the WP:RIP area a couple years ago. We ended up getting some policy and guidelines criteria established. It wasn't that I knew or worked with Vaoverland specifically. (guess us (talk page stalker)'s can end up looking kinda creepy .. lol. — Ched : ? 03:01, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- @Drmies. Not much really. IIRC we sometimes protect and hat the main user page. Sometimes a person will create a memorial page for people to sign too. Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/Guidelines was set up a while back, after a long discussion here. That sort of led to Wikipedia talk:Deceased Wikipedians/verification. I remember that there was a huge outpouring of emotion when User:Jeffpw passed. Note, you don't want to read the talk page history without a box of kleenex. Anyway, that was what prompted me to try to do something in the RIP area. As well as some of my own health issues. Anyway, I'm very sorry to the friends and family of Vaoverland. From all I've read, he was a terrific person. I wish I would have known him. — Ched : ? 03:14, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Preliminary work on adding Cor Klaasen to Wikipedia
[edit]Hi Drmies, thanks for the welcome on my talk page! Your message was prompted by my addition of a link to a (currently non-existent page) on Cor Klaasen on the Rietveld_Academy page. You mentioned that I may have a conflict of interest in adding that link. I'm Cor Klaasen's son, currently working with other family members and a number of artists and curators to ensure that Cor's design legacy is better known outside the small world of graphic design in Ireland. To that end, we're staging exhibitions of his work and there's a book in the pipeline. This is not hagiography - the intention is that the evaluation of the quality and relevance of Cor's work is done by disinterested art historians and other commentators.
There is a small but growing body of commentary on Cor's work and legacy, see http://www.google.ie/#q=cor+klaasen for example. Despite that, perhaps it's too early to consider including Cor Klaasen in Wikipedia?
Thanks for taking the time to have this conversation!
Best Regards, Benklaasen (talk) 20:44, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hallo Ben, dank je voor je berichtje. (Your dad taught you Dutch, I hope!) Well, the case is this. General notability guidelines are here, WP:GNG. Your father was an artist, so another basic guideline for notability (by Wikipedia's standards, right) is here, WP:ARTIST. The problem is often how to establish (prove) that a person meets those guidelines, and such proof has to come from reliable sources (WP:RS). In Dutchland, that's not always so easy, since for all our talk of the information age there is relatively little online (Ireland is similar). This is not a reliable source since it's not independent. However, there are suggestions I found of notability. Evidence of that 2010 exhibition from a newspaper (always save your clippings) would surely help toward establishing notability. This would help also--do you have a copy? Stuff doesn't have to be online, of course. Given what I saw, he might squeak by, but it also depends (with your conflict of interest...) on how objectively an article is written. If I have a moment later I might make a start for you in a sandbox, so you can work on it until you go live.
The other part of notability is that until a person is notable (that is, has an article which is OK) they can't really be added to another page, like for Rietveld. (You saw I cleaned that up some, and probably angered some people--my apologies). A google search in itself does not do that, an article does. So--go through the archives, pluck out the newspaper articles, look for reviews of books he did the cover for that address your father's work, and write it up in an objective, encyclopedic manner. I'm going to make a brief start right now while the kids are watching TV. Drmies (talk) 23:22, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
- Here it is: User:Benklaasen/Cor Klaasen. Let me know if I can help and when you think you're ready to move it to the main space. Groeten, Drmies (talk) 23:29, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Hi Drmies, thanks very much for taking the time to reply and provide me with this excellent guidance. (I grew up speaking Dutch but was never formally educated in or through the language. I can comprehend spoken and written Dutch comfortably and can speak it to an elementary degree, but I'm wary of attempting written Dutch!)
I'll trawl the archives for information on Cor Klaasen; currently I have a couple of copies of microfilm of newspaper clippings concerning Klaasen's involvement in book design awards and design seminars. There's bound to be more information available in library archives - I'll contact the curator who found the articles I've linked to. I'm aware of at least two books which mention Cor Klaasen, if only anecdotally: "Oranje and Green" and a book on the advertising industry in Ireland which was published in the mid-1980s; a quick search on Google books turns up a variety of references to Cor's book design work. The book you mentioned is the catalogue to the 1994 exhibition of Cor's lino prints; I have copies of that book. Examples of his work are also held by a number of Irish museums and libraries - I'll find out the full list. The information is out there, it's just a question of collating it all and making a case for Cor's notability.
That list of notable alumni of the Gerrit Rieveld Academy needed cleaing up; I'm certainly not going to complain about you removing dead links! If nothing else, that edit allowed me to start a conversation with you on the correct approach to take on this topic, so I'm grateful for that. I'm keen to interact with Wikipedia in the appropriate manner.
Thanks for starting the page in my sandbox, you've given me a sensible framework to start working with. I'm sure I'll be back to quiz you some more and to ask you to review what I've written!

Ah, I've just dug up the name of The Advertising Book: The History of Advertising in Ireland. Now to check if it contains anything relevant!

DYK for Wayne Greenhaw
[edit]On 24 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Wayne Greenhaw, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Alabama author Wayne Greenhaw chronicled the African-American civil rights movement in the American South? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

- With thanks, as so often, to Mandarax, the Lady, and User:Kelapstick--and this time also to User:Ohconfucius and User:Billy Hathorn. Collaborative efforts are nice. Drmies (talk) 00:28, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Indeed they are! LadyofShalott-alt (talk) 04:04, 24 June 2011 (UTC) And you always find interesting things for me to work on that I wouldn't otherwise. LadyofShalott-alt (talk) 04:16, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Alt lady, should I find alt-things for you to work on? How about turning The Rev into a GA? Drmies (talk) 04:18, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Did I say always? Sorry, heavy metal drummers are not quite my thing, alt-me or otherwise. LadyofShalott-alt (talk) 04:21, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

I got an inscribed copy of the new book by John A. Buehrens today. There may be articles about Universalists and Unitarians in my future. LadyofShalott-alt (talk) 04:34, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- An old joke from one of my old professors: how many Gods does a Unitarian believe in? One--at the most. Drmies (talk) 18:51, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah... that's about the size of it. :) LadyofShalott-alt (talk) 02:46, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Glas (book)
[edit]On 24 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Glas (book), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Derrida's 1974 text Glas is printed in two columns, one commenting on Hegel and the other on Genet, woven around and separated by "marginalia, supplementary comments, [and] lengthy quotations"? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Fuse lit, flameproof suit on
[edit]If I suddenly go offline then it may well be because of Talk:Madurai#Religious sensitivities. I feel that it is a valid point to make but the consequences of making it are a little troubling! Let's just hope that there are some sensible people around. - Sitush (talk) 13:45, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Earn your honorary status doc, and also be thankful that I wasn't around to oppose your RfA. Shame on you for sending Sitush my way when you should have resolved that minor problem concerning the (claimed) father of the point of intermixing of the three seas. BTW, at the rate at which he's going, we'll soon have an Englishman edge out the Dutchman for the honorary Tamil status. It reminds me of how easily Fort Geldria was ceded. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 13:49, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Aiai. What do we do? Spiff? Lady? MRG? Revdel all the way back to 2009? Drmies (talk) 18:54, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm... I haven't looked in enough detail yet at the history, but it seems likely that would wipe out some legitimate edits as well. Is that the case, or has it just been so messed up that long that nothing between then and now is worth preserving? LadyofShalott-alt (talk) 03:48, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- I haven't looked that closely at all the intermediate ones--but there was an implication that it goes back to 2002, I thought. Drmies (talk) 03:55, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think revdel is needed here -- what of them is it eligible for? Minor copyvios that aren't RD1 eligible IMO. But there's the size issue though, which seems to be cropping up every so often that it needs a longer term solution through talk page and subsequent enforcement; likewise with a few other really minor issues which a few of our readers/writers seem to deeply care about, throwing verifiability to the winds. BTW Doc/Lady, unrelated as it may be, I've been inactive for a while and apparently BLPPROD has been further diluted, have we started allowing blogspot and facebook profiles as sufficient to pass BLPPROD purposes? -- Shmuel Breban is one where I BLPPRODded but apparently I was wrong, so I'd like to get reset on that criteria now. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:14, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- Doesn't need revdel. I'm going through the entire thing, slowly, and picking up the vios. I can fix some with rephrases; the big stuff will be reverted. One problem, particularly common to articles on Indian subjects, is people placing trust in snippet views or even completely mis-stating a source. For this reason I may start asking for copies of cited stuff that I cannot see myself and possibly removing content if nothing is forthcoming. That is drastic and last resort, but will see what happens.
- BTW, the vios cannot go back to 2002 because the article was not created until after then. The big copyvio I picked up was of a website that hosted the vio'd content at least as early as 2002 per the Wayback machine. Sorry for any confusion here. - Sitush (talk) 07:43, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. And in other good news, you're still around. ;) Drmies (talk) 04:46, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism report
[edit]If you look at the talk page for user 170.135.241.45 at User talk:170.135.241.45 you'll note that the user was first warned about vandalism as far back in 2005 and has been warned again and again and again (in 2009, 2010, and 2011). The entire talk page is pretty much nothing but warning after warning. I don't if I'm supposed to respond on this issue on your talk page here, but I did want to explain that I was reporting the user based not only the most recent act of vandalism, but on the history as it appears on talk page. Was that inappropriate?Jpcohen (talk) 23:38, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Look at the top of the page--it's a shared IP. That means that some latitude should be given: it's not necessarily the same person all the time. And compared to some other IPs, it's really not a lot of warnings on that page, and while a final warning was given, that was a month ago and pretty much counts as stale. Besides, the IP has never been blocked before. I understand what you're saying, but that final warning guideline on the AIV page is there for a reason. If they continue, and collect enough warnings and a final warning within a reasonable amount of time--say, a couple of days, or a week--that's blockable. If they have a long history of warnings (serious ones, not incidental ones) and blocks, that's a different matter, but with a shared IP admins (like myself) aren't likely to block under the conditions as you have sketched them. Thanks for your note, and thanks for helping to keep the house clean, Drmies (talk) 23:46, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for the explanation.Jpcohen (talk) 00:00, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Vandlism only accounts
[edit]Hi. You recently rejected a vandalism report I made on the grounds that the use hadn't been sufficiently warned. However, the account is evidently a vandalism-only account. I didn't think warnings were necessary for VO accounts. Could you clarify. I can't seem to find the guidlines on VO's. Chimpanzee+ Us | Ta | Co 03:27, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- In my opinion, you're not dealing with an account that makes such atrocious edits that I want to block them on sight. If it had been an IP, you wouldn't have had the option of clicking on "Vandalism only" and you wouldn't yet have gotten to level 4 given the relatively low seriousness of the edits. Perhaps other admins differ, but it's a matter of judgment. I gave them a final warning. If they do it again, that's it. Hope this helps, Drmies (talk) 03:37, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's great. Thanks for the reply. Chimpanzee+ Us | Ta | Co 16:54, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
