Your recent edits[edit]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 14:53, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doug, You may wish to read WP:COI, WP:NOTABLE and most importantly WP:AUTO with regards to the article above, which I presume is about yourself. As it stands I'm afraid to say it is no more than a résumé which doesn't meet notability guidelines, and is likely to be speedy deleted as {{nn-bio}}. I would suggest a large re-write, removing the CV approach to the article, and show why you or this article is notable giving good references. Unfortunately you may think you are but as the article stands others (myself included) may have a different opinion with respect to the notability wikipedia guidelines. Regards Khukri 10:44, 13 August 2008 (UTC) Dougmonahan (talk) 17:07, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Khukri - hello thanks for the comments - PLEase don't delete my page until I have had a chance to finish it. This is the first I have participated in Wikipedia - not trying to break any rules, very interested in learning how to work on them. I am most interested in bio's so what better one that one I know very well. Thus .. . I am still getting the hang of it all. I am planning on putting all of the links to the different magazines, that have quotes about Doug Monahan. There are many. My phone number is 512-565-2524. I welcome the opportunity to speak with you about this. Thanks Dougmonahan (talk) 16:49, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No-one has put it up for speedy deletion.... yet, but if they do you put {{hangon}} underneath the speedy deletion tag on the article itself, not on your talk page. I would suggest whittling down alot of information fast, as it does read almost memoire-ish. Then you could take a look at other peoples articles start with big CEO's then work the way down the chain, and you'll see the information becomes very factual, and get to VP lvl on most big corporates and you'll struggle to find encylopedic entries for most of these guys. Mainly because they fail to meet the notability guidelines.
You mentioned you are interested in bio's and where easier to start than your own. One of the rules of thumbs with regards to bio's, if you are inherently notable then soon enough someone will write an article about you, and it is unadvisable to write them about yourself. Writing an article about yourself, is often seen as publicity pieces or spam and as I said before will often get deleted out of hand. So it is easier to get involved in bio pieces that you are not involved in as you can edit with a neutral eye for what reads well. So if you are serious about contributing to wikipedia, pick someone you may have some knowledge about, go to their article read it, and then read through the discussions on the talk pages, start with someone mildly controversial if you can, that will show you the discussions that take place, and how they evolve to forming an article.
Going back to your article, being brutal, pare the article down to 1 or 2 really pertinant lines, and almost certainly remove the photo leave it at that for a while, and build it up slowly. Khukri 17:29, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Khukri - Hi - Thanks for your information. I have read the autobiography page and the speedy delete page and think I am gaining a better understanding of what you mean. I MOST CERTAINLY am not trying to break any of the guidelines of the Wikipedia group. In fact, if anything, I am trying to learn how to use and contribute better. I am most interested up bio's and updating peoples bio's but need to know how to do it. The last thing I wish to do is to mess up somebody elses work - hence I created a page I could work on without fear. I am trying to get all of the links done and references because there are a great deal. Inc. Business Week, Wired, Austin Business Journal, etc. Once I have done all - I don't care if the page is deleted - but I've spent a great deal of time on this so far - and jeez - i really want to finish it first. Respectfully Dougmonahan (talk) 17:00, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
{{hangon}} Where do I put this? Dougmonahan (talk) 17:03, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at your second post where you say you don't care if it's deleted afterwards, I've moved the article into what is known as user space, this is your area and the article will not be deleted from here.
You will find your article by following this link User:Dougmonahan/Article
With this you can edit to your hearts content, and if you want to move it back into article space, I would suggest getting a couple of opinions and then if you feel confident it checks all the right boxes go to Wikipedia:Requested moves and they will move it back for you.
Happy editing and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Khukri 17:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions. Please forgive me - I am VERY new to this. I had a hard enough time even learning how to do the edits - figuring out how the links work - and am now trying to figure out how to place all references - such as I mentioned Newsweek, Time, Wired, etc. I definitely did not realize I am violating any sort of Wiki rules - I live here in Austin, Texas - and was speaking with someone I know from the UK who said he put up a page about me - and I was like "What" - let me see it - and then he said I could edit it too - and I've been very interested in working on pieces about CEO's that I know like Michael Dell, Steve Jobs, Gordan Eubanks, Marc Canter, (Gordon founded Symantec) Marc founded Macromedia later sold to Adobe. My facebook friends are all really exciting - and I'd like to be able to make pages about them - but certainly did not want to make pages that were horrible. I appreciate you working with me - will definitely pare it down - but as I said - the whole purpose isn't to promote myself, but to figure out just exactly what does what.
It probably sounds novice to you - but as an example I put Chevron and then figured out after looking at it that I needed to put Chevron Petroleum It is quite interesting the way it all works. While I am very computer literate, I am still getting used to exactly how to "program" in the Wiki language if you want to call it that.
If you are on facebook - my name is doug monahan - please send me a friend request. I can introduce you to a number of my friends in very high positions in the computer industry. I am not meaning to brag - THEY are the important people - many doing billions of dollar a year and revolutionizing the way we communicate. I'm 51 - thus I've been around quite some time in this business.
Forgive my solid understanding of exactly how this works. I wrote a number of people trying to get some help - and have read the help pages - but I could not get anybody to write me back. Thus, I have been forging ahead with this the past week or so. You could probably do a page in a few hours, but it's taken me nearly 25 or more hours to do what little I have done. That is why when I heard it was about to be pulled down - or might be pulled down - I phreaked a bit. What I would LIKE to do, if I can get it all done before anybody yanks it down is to work on all of the references stuff next. I wrote it first - now I can get all of the magazine articles, etc for the backup - and then if somebody wants to take it down, I can understand - certainly not trying to break any rules - merely hope to get a really good article finished - and then be able to do same for other friends of mine - notable I think. Apple, Dell, Symantec, Adobe, Pixar, they are all quite bit companies. I've only made $150m in my life - not billions like my friends have.
I've been able to charter jets - but don't own a Citation X like Michael Dell. I have quite an extensive photo collection - it's my hobby - and I'd like to be able to link Wikipedia to Flickr if that is possible. I don't know if videos are possible to include - but I think that would be fun as well. Anyway, sorry for the long letter - thanks for your input. Sorry to put the don't delete up when nobody has done it yet anyway. I am still trying to figure all out. doug monahan 512-565-2524 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougmonahan (talkcontribs) 17:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved the whole conversation here, as I'm not a fan of disjointed talk page conversations, and it makes for easy reading further down the line. So if you want to reply, reply here and I will watch your talk page for a short time. Don't worry we all started somewhere, and I remember trying to work through the wikilinking as well, "it's only easy if you know the answer". The article you are looking for is Chevron Corporation, if you look at plain ol' Chevron this takes you to what is known as a disambiguation page, if one word has many meanings or possible articles this is what points readers in the right direction. If you wanted to point to the chevron corporation article but use different text you would do it along the lines of [[Chevron Corporation|Chevron Petroleum]]. Cheers Khukri 18:01, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Sorry to bother you again. Can you move my page back because I have been working on it with somebody else - and have been able to recruit two other individuals interested in bio's to sign up to help me. I just asked one to help me edit it - and because it is not an article yet - they can't find it. Our goal is to collaborate on my page - make it really good - and then start focusing on CEO's within high-tech. For example - it wasn't me that put up my photo - that was taken from my facebook page from another friend. I just spent about ten minutes trying how to delete the image. I THINK myself and a handfull of friends can learn to do bio's and we want to work on each one together until finished. Hope this makes sense. doug —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougmonahan (talkcontribs) 18:10, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please reply here, and not on my talk page. I posted the link above to the article in your user space, but you can send your friend this link.

Hangon[edit]

The hangong tag should only be used on articles that are tagged for speedy deletion. I have removed the hangon tag from your talk page as it is not marked for deletion. Chrislk02 Chris Kreider 17:12, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
